I am working on a historical referencing project and wanted to ask you all for help...and besides, this will be fun :)

I would love to compile a biggo thread full of info about Queers who are famous/highly visible. Our heroes, actresses, singers, artists, etc.

Beyond that, we can discuss how the visibility and fame of these Queers has impacted the world around us. Did they invent something awesome? Did their song make it to #1? Were they controversial? How have they shaped the media experience? How have they been shaped by the media?

Let's talk!

Please include a link to a pic!

Toshi Reagon:

born in Atlanta in 1964) is an American folk/blues musician. She is the daughter of Sweet Honey in the Rock co-founder Bernice Johnson Reagon, with whom she has sometimes collaborated on musical projects and of Cordell Hull Reagon, a leader of the civil rights movement in Albany, member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and co-founder of The Freedom Singers. She is also the goddaughter of folk singer, Pete Seeger and named after his wife, Toshi Seeger.
Reagon began performing when she dropped out of college; soon afterward, Lenny Kravitz invited her to open for him on his first world tour. She has since shared the stage with performers ranging from Ani Difranco to Elvis Costello.
Her band, BIGLovely, has been performing together since September 1996. The name allegedly comes from a love-letter she received from her girlfriend, which was addressed "To My BIGLovely." The band includes Judith Casselberry on acoustic guitar and vocals, Robert "Chicken" Burke on drums, Fred Cass, Jr. on bass, Adam Widoff on electric guitar, and Catherine Russell on mandolin and vocals. The line-up also includes Jen Leigh, Ann Klein, Debbie Robinson, Alison Miller, Kismet Lyles and Stephanie McKay as replacements.
Reagon lives in Brooklyn, New York with her partner and her daughter.[1]

Bitch and Animal, a duo consisting of musicians Bitch and Animal Prufrock, were a queercore band that performed from 1995 to 2004. Bitch and Animal have kept their birth names out of publication for both political and artistic reasons. They became established while touring as an opening act for Ani DiFranco, and later launched their own highly successful tours.

Their first album, What's That Smell, was self-produced and featured some of their best-known songs, such as Drag King Bar and (on a hidden track) Pussy Manifesto. Their next two albums were released on Righteous Babe. Eternally Hard, released in 2001, was co-produced by Ani DiFranco and Wayne Schrengohst. Their last album, Sour Juice and Rhyme was produced in collaboration with June Millington of the groundbreaking 1970s all-women band Fanny.

and of course

Ok, I just recently - like a few days ago - discovered a new Spanish artist who I am madly in love with now!!! And I'm not just talking about her art, etc., I mean like I AM IN LOVE/LUST!!!

Seriously, I am obsessing about this butch day and night now. Can we talk about this? How does one deal with these obsessions? For Pete's sake I am a mature (really mature!! lol) woman, and I'm seriously thinking of moving to Spain to be near her, and follow her around like some dumb-ass groupie!!!

Her name is Mayte Martin (pronounced 'Myteh'). She is a Spanish Flamenquista singer, not dancer, who also sings the classic boleros of my mom's time. Other then having this angelic voice, she is the best looking butch I have ever seen - bar none!!! So what's a girl to do???? Also, she is very OPEN about her homosexuality, and talks about it online...I believe she is an activist as well.

I'm looking for a pic of her to post, but am afraid you'll all be drooling too!!!

Ok, carry on...

I know there are more, but I mainly based this on musicians/authors/philosophers/politician etc. that I really like or I feel have done something really important.

Rob Halford
As a diehard metalhead, I figured I’d start with this one. For those who don’t know, Rob Halford is the singer of Judas Priest with one of the most widely hailed voices in metal. Besides being the frontman of one of the world’s most well-known heavy metal bands (not to mention one of metal’s founding bands along with Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden), he was also largely responsible for bringing the leather culture into heavy metal (straight from the gay scene, though he didn’t come out as gay to his fans until 1998).

Clive Barker
Is a well-known English author. For those of you familiar with the horror film Hellraiser, it is based on his novella, Hellbound Heart. His books often feature homosexual/queer characters, which has done nothing to diminish his popularity among horror fans worldwide, that's for sure. His books have been translated into a number of different languages.

Timothy Findley
A famous Canadian author. His most well-known work is called The Wars (Governor General’s Award in 1977, the year of its publication), which is widely considered to be a Canadian classic.

Roland Barthes
An extremely influential 20th century French philosopher/critical theorist primarily concerned with structuralism and semiotics. It’s unlikely that you’ll ever take a 20th century critical theory or philosophy course that doesn’t mention him.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Aka Peter Tchaikovsky, aka Tchaikovsky;) Think Nutcracker and Swan Lake.

Jean Jacques Régis de Cambacérčs
French lawyer who wrote the Napoleonic Code upon which French law is founded.

Jóhanna Sigurđadóttir
First female Icelandic Prime Minister and first openly homosexual prime minister/president/head of government in the world.

Marcel Proust
Probably don’t need to say anything about this one either. Famous French author, most known for Ŕ la recherche du temps perdu (aka In Search of Lost Time).

Leonardo DaVinci
Do I need to say anything at all:p

Ralph Waldo Emerson
A famous American transcendentalist and one of my favourite philosophers. He was bisexual, but I assume that counts.

Except for Emerson, all the other individuals I mentioned above were/are either gay or lesbian. Some other famous bisexuals who people don’t often recognise as such: Hans Christian Anderson and Michel Foucault (actually, if you look at many 20th century critical theorists, you’ll find many gay/lesbian and bisexual individuals like Judith Butler, Simone de Beauvoir and the aforementioned Roland Barthes).

Martina Navratilova (born October 18, 1956) is a Czech-American tennis player and a former World No. 1. Billie Jean King said about Navratilova in 2006, "She's the greatest singles, doubles and mixed doubles player who's ever lived."[1]

Navratilova won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, 31 Grand Slam women's doubles titles (an all-time record), and 10 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. She reached the Wimbledon singles final 12 times, including 9 consecutive years from 1982 through 1990, and won the women's singles title at Wimbledon a record 9 times. She and King each won 20 Wimbledon titles, an all-time record. Navratilova is one of just three women to have accomplished a career Grand Slam in singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles (called the Grand Slam "boxed set").

Marlene Dietrich!

(from Wiki):
Dietrich was known to have a strong set of political convictions and a mind to speak them. She was a staunch anti-Nazi who despised Germany's anti-semitic policies of the time. Her singing helped here too, as she recorded a number of anti-Nazi records in German.

Dietrich became an American citizen in 1937 and entertained American troops during the Second World War. She is also famous for having recorded Lili Marleen during World War II, a curious example of a song transcending the hatreds of war.

Dietrich was a model which later stars would follow. Her public image and some of her movies included strong sexual undertones, including bisexuality. Accordingly, it is no surprise that she had affairs with women (Mercedes de Acosta was among her lesbian lovers) as well as men.

Unlike her professional celebrity, which was carefully crafted and maintained, Dietrich's personal life was kept out of public view. She married once, to film technician Rudolf Sieber. Her only child, Maria, was born in 1925. When Maria gave birth to a son in 1948, Dietrich was dubbed "the world's most glamorous grandmother."

TOM OF FINLAND was born Touko Laaksonen in 1920 in the village of Kaarina, Finland. At the age of nineteen, he moved to Helsinki to attend art college and, for his own personal enjoyment, created his first homoerotic drawings.

Following his release from the army after World War II, Touko began to work in advertising. He continued to draw his fantasies and, urged by close friends, submitted them to the American bodybuilding magazine Physique Pictorial. Because of the conservative social climate in 1957, he chose to be published under the pseudonym "Tom of Finland."

His images were an immediate success, followed by the publication of numerous booklets and anthologies, and since 1973, his work has been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide.

With his friend Durk Dehner, he founded the Tom of Finland Company in 1979; the Tom of Finland Foundation was formed five years later as a non-profit educational archive to preserve, restore, and exhibit erotic art.

Louisa May Alcott, author of Little Women, did say this in an interview with Louise Chandler Moulton, 1883:

"I am more than half-persuaded that I am a man's soul, put by some freak of nature into a woman's body... because I have fallen in love in my life with so many pretty girls and never once the least bit with any man."

THIS! THIS was worth the whole thread! I had no idea she was queer!
I mean, even if she didnt say word-for-word "I . Am. A. Lesbo", this quote certainly feels queer.

And "Little Women" has always been a fave! :)

I think it makes sense why Jo always felt so queer. :) I think she said that in a response to a question about why she never married. I think in the same interview, she also says the only reason she married Jo off to the professor was because of all the fangirls who were begging her to marry Jo off to Laurie, and she was determined to thwart them. Sadly the article is difficult to find online but I think my mom sent me something about the interview. I can look for it if you find your research heading in that direction.

Billy Strayhorn, jazz composer. Worked a great deal with Duke Ellington. If you know "Take the A Train," you know Billy Strayhorn. He composed "Take the A Train" based on the lyrical quality of Duke Ellington's voice on the telephone, as Ellington gave him directions to his house in Harlem.

I am a huge, huge jazz fan...and a major fan of Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington.

A sidenote: Ellington was heterosexual. In an interview I saw with his daughter, she acknowledged the close friendship between her father and Strayhorn, saying they were as close as two men could be and not actually be lovers.

Katharine Hepburn dressed as a boy in the movie Sylvia Scarlett. (AFP/Getty Images)

There has been a lot of speculation regarding Katharine Hepburn's orientation and gender experience, and though she was rumored to have affairs with some women, if she was queer, she was not out. There is a biography that says she had a boy alter-ego named Jimmy when she was a kid and that she had several affairs with women, and that she and Spencer Tracy were basically beards for each other. But there is a lot of refutation of the things said in that biography and I can't put my hands on the source material.

Anyway, here she is being adorable and letting some girl put an eyeliner mustache on her.

Dreams

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

Dream Deferred

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
Like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?

Ruth Ellis was an out African-American lesbian most of her life. She and her long-time partner, Babe Franklin, opened their home to runaway gays and lesbians. Today, there is a LGBTQ center in Highland Park in the metro Detroit area named for her (the Ruth Ellis Center) that serves as short-term and long-term shelter for LGBTQ youth or young adults. It is one of 4 shelters in the US that is dedicated to this purpose.

And....God-des & She....

Most people trying to foray into the hip-hop world try to conform to the stereotypes,” says GO NYC magazine. “For God-Des & She, by bucking the standard, they created their own. In other words, while most aspiring rappers try to set the bar, God-des & She ARE the bar.”

A hip-hop/pop/soul duo bred in the Midwest, God-Des & She now play to packed venues all over the world, from Lacrosse, Wisconsin, to Stockholm, Sweden. Ever since they appeared on Showtime’s The L Word three years ago, performing their infamous single “Lick It,” the pair haven’t had a moment’s rest, selling over 30,000 albums, holding down the #1 song spot on MTV LOGO with their song “Love You Better,” and signing autograph after autograph for eager fans. With their new unreleased album, God-Des & She are about to blow up—big. Produced by Brian Hardgroove (Public Enemy, Wu Tang, Burning Spear, Aerosmith), their new album confirms their status as an underground act about to hit the mainstream.

God-Des & She met in Madison, Wisconsin in 1999. God-Des was making her name as a solo act when she first heard She singing in a local rock band. Soon after, God-Des asked her to do some hooks for a new song she was working on. They discovered that they had more than musical chemistry—they had musical alchemy. God-Des hails from a family of classical musicians: her dad was the trombone professor at University of Michigan for twenty years and played a wide musical range of commercial gigs, ranging from The Flintstones theme song to playing in the studio with Neil Diamond; her mother is a cello prodigy who performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at age fifteen before performing in the Motown studios with groups like The Jackson Five and Carol King. In contrast, no one in She’s working-class family is a musician; yet, her powerful, natural talent couldn’t be contained. (Nowadays the workers at She’s father’s factory in Wisconsin smile and proudly jam out to the newest God-Des & She tunes during work). As different as their two backgrounds were, when God-des and She riffed together the first time it was as if they were one person, one mind, one past—and, as it turned out, one future. Combining God-Des’ irreverent rhymes with She’s soaring voice, they created shimmering, irresistible tracks which were soon captivating crowds in Madison and beyond. “Needless to say,” She notes, “I don’t sing with that rock band anymore.”

In 2004, the duo moved to New York City. They’d gotten too big for Madison and it was time to reach the new, bigger audience that was meant to hear them. “I remember the day we arrived in New York,” God-Des recalls. “As we drove into the city I was thinking, ‘Oh shit. We’re really doing this. This is for real.’” And real it was. They pounded the pavement in New York. They garnered a devoted following but even with all the shows in and outside of New York, it was a challenge to stay afloat. “I’m the master at staying a month behind on my rent,” God-Des jokes. “Or two.” Both God-Des & She worked many an odd job to support their budding career. God-Des worked as a security guard and a beer distributor, among other things. And She worked as a waitress and a meat slicer in an Italian deli in Queens. “We had some hard times,” She says, “and a number of times we thought about giving up. The only thing that kept us going was knowing our music meant something extremely special to our fans.”

In 2008 God-Des & She released their second album, Stand Up. By then their hard work was paying off and they were able to live solely off their music. The pair was featured in two documentaries, had appeared on The L Word, held the number one spot on MTV LOGO for 15 consecutive weeks, toured all over the World, and garnered frequent write-ups in magazines and blogs. Their fan base had grown tremendously and their musical style had evolved. “We went from a duo where the rapper rapped all the verses and the singer sung all the hooks, to totally infusing our styles and doing songs that are nearly impossible to define and place in any musical box,” says She. Fans continually told them at the now-famous post-concert autograph signings, there was no other group like them. When you hear a God-des & She song, you know it is them.

In early 2009 God-Des & She took a brief break from their busy touring schedule—eight to ten shows a month all over the country and world—to cut a new album. They teamed up with legendary producer Brian Hardgroove. “This is our best album yet,” says God-Des. “It takes all the strengths we’ve been honing over the years and puts them together to create something new.”Indeed. The new album is a genre-straddling tour-de-force, which frustrates categories and simple descriptions. It fills a massive void that is missing in current popular music. It offers songs honoring their hip-hop roots (“Respect My Fresh”). It has songs to get even the least confident dancer up and “shaking it” in the club (“Love Machine,” “Drum Circle”). Songs to roll the windows down and scream every word (“Get Your Bike,” “Spin The Bottle”). Songs to make you think (“Blue In The Face,” ”Radio Up”). And even the All American Rock Song (“Change”) to play at every football stadium in America. She’s breathtaking alto crackles and burns throughout, leaving you with goose bumps. And God-Des’s lyrics turns language into a playground for her to do wild somersaults in. “They are easily as good as the best that hip hop has to offer,” Hardgroove says of the duo, “and far more interesting.”

So what’s next for God-des & She? More of the same: loyalty to fans and their artistic vision. Only difference is now they’re taking it to a whole new level. “Let’s just hope the world is ready for us,” say’s She.

“To see you naked is to recall the Earth.”

God, i loved Lorca back in the day.

Gacela of Unexpected Love

No one understood the perfume
of the shadow magnolia of your belly.
No one knew you crushed completely
a humming-bird of love between your teeth.

There slept a thousand little persian horses
in the moonlight plaza of your forehead,
while, for four nights, I embraced there
your waist, the enemy of snowfall.

Between the plaster and the jasmines,
your gaze was a pale branch, seeding.
I tried to give you, in my breastbone,
the ivory letters that say ever.

Ever, ever: garden of my torture,
your body, flies from me forever,
the blood of your veins is in my mouth now,
already light-free for my death.

One of my favorite authors and a former Richmonder... Patricia Cornwell

http://www.patriciacornwell.com/files/2009/12/22/img_102214916822.jpg

Patricia Cornwell was born on June 9, 1956, in Miami, Florida, and grew up in Montreat, North Carolina.

Following graduation from Davidson College in 1979, she began working at the Charlotte Observer, rapidly advancing from listing television programs to writing feature articles to covering the police beat. She won an investigative reporting award from the North Carolina Press Association for a series of articles on prostitution and crime in downtown Charlotte.

Her award-winning biography of Ruth Bell Graham, A Time for Remembering, was published in 1983. From 1984 to 1990 she worked as a technical writer and a computer analyst at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond, Virginia.

Her first crime novel, Postmortem, was published by Scribner’s in 1990. Initially rejected by seven major publishing houses, it became the first novel to win the Edgar, Creasey, Anthony, and Macavity awards as well as the French Prix du Roman d’Aventure in a single year. In Postmortem, Cornwell introduced Dr. Kay Scarpetta as the intrepid Chief Medical Examiner of the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 1999, Dr. Scarpetta herself won the Sherlock Award for best detective created by an American author.

Often interviewed on national television as a forensic consultant, Cornwell is a founder of the Virginia Institute of Forensic Science and Medicine; a founding member of the National Forensic Academy; a member of the Advisory Board for the Forensic Sciences Training Program at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, NYC; and a member of the Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital’s National Council, where she is an advocate for psychiatric research. She is also well known for her philanthropic contributions to animal rescue and criminal justice as well as endowing college scholarships and promoting the cause of literacy on the national scene. Some of her projects include the establishment of an ICU at Cornell’s Animal Hospital, the archaeological excavation of Jamestown, and the scientific study of the Confederacy’s submarine H.L. Hunley. Most recently she donated a million dollars to Harvard’s Fogg Museum to establish a chair in inorganic science.

Considered the most beautiful woman in the world during her heyday - 1930's & 40's - Greta Garbo had many affairs with women. Hugo Vicker's biography: 'Loving Garbo', is a tell-all and insightful view of her romantic involvement with Mercedes de Acosta & Cecil Beaton (who was gay himself, but evidently could not resist the Swede). It is a facinating read, and also exposes many other 'ladies' of the 'sewing circle'.

Ha! I highly doubt she is a feminist. I don't know about trans-unfriendliness but it wouldn't surprise me. She's a total nut. An equal opportunity offender. lol. That's her schtick, I think. I guess that's why she's famous and highly visible. She's like the queer Anne Coulter. lol. Not every famous queer is one to emulate!

well, i was impressed with her from the interview - but then i wasn't expecting ANYTHING. She's definitely a feminist though. A very opinionated one. She's not respectful of the fat-positive movement either - though her reasoning (which I don't agree with) seemed more female-positive that female-negating. And yeah, she might be crazy and she definitely promotes herself a lot.

Whale lived openly in Hollywood in the 1920-1930's which was pretty much unheard of at the time. Ma Rainey (the Mother of the Blues)

from the Prove It On Me Blues:

Went out last night, had a great big fight
Everything seemed to go on wrong
I looked up, to my surprise
The gal I was with was gone.

Where she went, I don’t know
I mean to follow everywhere she goes;
Folks say I’m crooked.
I didn’t know where she took it
I want the whole world to know.

They say I do it,
ain’t nobody caught me
Sure got to prove it on me;
Went out last night
with a crowd of my friends,
They must’ve been women,
‘cause I don’t like no men.

It’s true I wear a collar and a tie,
Makes the wind blow all the while
Don’t you say I do it,
ain’t nobody caught me
You sure got to prove it on me.

Say I do it,
ain’t nobody caught me
Sure got to prove it on me.

I went out last night
with a crowd of my friends,
It must’ve been women,
‘cause I don’t like no men.
Wear my clothes just like a fan
Talk to the gals just like any old man

Cause they say I do it,
ain’t nobody caught me
Sure got to prove it on me.

Ah, love that Dorothy!! Inventor of the 'boom mike' (this is where the mike is attached to a pole which follows the actors around), and 'married' to choreographer Marion Morgan for 23 years, until Marion's death.

'The Girls: Sappho Goes to Hollywood' - Diana McLellan, L.A. Books, 2000; a revealing 'tell-all' book about the most famous female names in Hollywood during it's heyday. From the early days of Hollywood until the studio system ended, this book is a delicious and scandalous read for anyone interested in classic Hollywood. It is certainly an eye-opener for many!! Many actresses you would never have dreamed of - exuding glamour thru every pore, and their many romantic involvements with men (beards) were lesbian. I recommend it highly. There's also another book: 'The Sewing Circle: Sappho's Leading Ladies' - Axel Madson, Kensington Books, 1995; which is another expose on those beloved classic icons.

Alberta Hunter

from redhotjazz.com:

Her husband moved back to the South and she never saw him again. Alberta met Lottie Taylor soon afterwards. She was the niece of the famous African-American entertainer Bert Williams. The two became lovers and stayed together for many years. Alberta moved on to a club called Elite Cafe #1 (3030 South State Street) where New Orleans Ragtime pianist Tony Jackson tickled the keys. Unlike Alberta, Tony Jackson was openly gay, which must have taken a lot of guts back in those days. Alberta helped to popularize some of Jackson's songs, including his most famous song, "Pretty Baby" which was written for his boyfriend.

Tony Jackson, ragtime legend, wrote this song for his boyfriend

You hate to have me call you "Pretty Baby."
I really thought that I was pleasing you,
For you're just a baby to me.
Your cunning little dimples and your baby stare,
Your baby talk and baby walk and curly hair,
Your baby smile
Makes life worthwhile.
You're just as sweet as you can be.

Your mother said you were the cutest kid.
No wonder, Dearie, that I'm wild about you
And all the cunning things you said and did.
Why, I love to fondly recall.
And just like Peter Pan it seems you'll always be
The same sweet cunning little baby dear to me,
And that is why
I'm sure that I
Will always love you best of all.

Everybody loves a baby that's why I'm in love with you,
Pretty baby, pretty baby,
And I'd like to be your sister, brother, dad and mother too,
Pretty baby, pretty baby.
Won't you come and let me rock you in my cradle of love
And we'll cuddle all the time.
Oh, I want a lovin' baby, and it might as well be you,
Pretty baby of mine,
Pretty baby of mine.

It is well known that not only was Bessie Smith herself a bisexual, but her own chorus line tended to be sexually fluid as well. As she traveled the blues circuits, she would provide her entourage with places to be in many cities.

Once described as "a frolicky pansexual sex symbol for the new millenium", Cumming has stated that he considers himself bisexual, "although the pendulum has obviously swung".[15] Prior to the civil union, Cumming dated both men and women. Previous relationships include a two year relationship with actress Saffron Burrows, a six year relationship with theater director Nick Philippou, and a 1985 marriage to actress Hilary Lyon which lasted eight years.

Cafe: 3 a.m.

Detectives from the vice squad
with weary sadistic eyes
spotting fairies.
Degenerates,
some folks say.

But God, Nature,
or somebody
made them that way.

Police lady or Lesbian
over there?
Where?
----------------------------------

I Dream a World

I dream a world where man
No other man will scorn,
Where love will bless the earth
And peace its paths adorn
I dream a world where all
Will know sweet freedom's way,
Where greed no longer saps the soul
Nor avarice blights our day.
A world I dream where black or white,
Whatever race you be,
Will share the bounties of the earth
And every man is free,
Where wretchedness will hang its head
And joy, like a pearl,
Attends the needs of all mankind-
Of such I dream, my world!

---------------------------

Minstrel Man

Because my mouth
Is wide with laughter
And my throat
Is deep with song,
You do not think
I suffer after
I have held my pain
So long?

Because my mouth
Is wide with laughter,
You do not hear
My inner cry?
Because my feet
Are gay with dancing,
You do not know
I die?

------------------------------------

Joy

I went to look for Joy,
Slim, dancing Joy,
Gay, laughing Joy,
Bright-eyed Joy-
And I found her
Driving the butcher's cart
In the arms of the butcher boy!
Such company, such company,
As keeps this young nymph, Joy!

-----------------------------------

Port Town

Hello, sailor boy,
In from the sea!
Hello, sailor,
Come with me!

Come on drink cognac.
Rather have wine?
Come here, I love you.
Come and be mine.

Lights, sailor boy,
Warm, white lights.
Solid land, kid.
Wild, white nights.

Come on, sailor,
Out o' the sea.
Let's go, sweetie!
Come with me.

William Rufus DeVane King

from wikipedia:

King was close friends with James Buchanan, and the two shared a home in Washington, D.C. for fifteen years prior to Buchanan's presidency. Buchanan and King's close relationship prompted Andrew Jackson to refer to King as "Miss Nancy" and "Aunt Fancy", while Aaron V. Brown spoke of the two as "Buchanan and his wife". Further, some of the contemporary press also speculated about Buchanan and King's relationship. Buchanan and King's nieces destroyed their uncles' correspondence, leaving some questions as to what relationship the two men had, but surviving letters illustrate the affection of a special friendship, and Buchanan wrote of his communion with his housemate. Buchanan wrote in 1844, after King left for France, "I am now solitary and alone, having no companion in the house with me. I have gone a wooing to several gentlemen, but have not succeeded with any one of them. I feel that it is not good for man to be alone; and should not be astonished to find myself married to some old maid who can nurse me when I am sick, provide good dinners for me when I am well, and not expect from me any very ardent or romantic affection."

Walt Whitman

And when I thought how my friend, my lover, was on
his way coming, then O I was happy,
Each breath tasted sweeter – and all that day my food
nourished me more – and the beautiful day passed well,
And the next came with equal joy – and with the next,
at evening, came my friend,
And that night while all was still I heard the waters roll
slowly continually up the shores,
I heard the hissing rustle of the liquid and sands, as directed
to me, whispering to congratulate me,
For the friend I love lay sleeping by my side,
In the stillness his face was inclined toward me, while the
moon's clear beams shone
And his arm lay lightly over my breast – and that night I was happy.

Edna St. Vincent Millay

From Sappho.com: In Great Companions, Max Eastman relates an interesting story about Millay that, if true, reveals something of her attitude about own sexuality. According to Eastman, while at a cocktail party Millay discussed her recurrent headaches with a psychologist. He asked her, "I wonder if it has ever occurred to you that you might perhaps, although you are hardly conscious of it, have an occasional impulse toward a person of your own sex?" She responded, "Oh, you mean I'm homosexual! Of course I am, and heterosexual, too, but what's that got to do with my headache?"

Mercedes de Acosta b. 1893, & d. 1968 in NYC. Wealthy socialite, Playwrite, screenwriter, poet, novelist. Little remembered for any literary work, but notoriously famous for being lover to the most beautiful and glamourous stars of classic cinema.

Truman Copote's naughty game of International Daisy Chain, whose object is to link people sexually using as few beds as possible, quipped: "Mercedes is the best card to hold - you can get to anyone from the Duchess of Windsor to Cardinal Spellman."

Mercedes' most famous lovers were Marlene Dietrich & Greta Garbo. But add to that list the likes of Tallulah Bankhead, Alla Nazimova, Ona Munson (played Belle Watling in Gone With The Wind), Isadora Duncan, Elenor Roosevelt (so rumored), Catherine Cornell, Eva Le Gallienne, etc., etc., etc. Names relatively unknown today, but giants of the theater and cinema in their time. Mercedes was a very busy 'lady' indeed!! She is at once a fascinating and riviting individual. Her story reads like a who's who (or who's sleeping with who) of Hollywood & Broadway!

What can I tell you...I think she's ugly. We all have different tastes and aesthetics. Last time I checked, we could voice our oppinions on here without grief. This is not a personal attack, just my oppinion, that's all.

WOW...what a slippery slope..."ugly"...about a physical presentation?...kinda makes my eyes bleed to read that...it's just...really...like Really?

ugly?...what's the point?...

voicing an opinion is just that...and, when said opinion causes a reader to shudder or have *their* own opinion...and makes a comment it's not really 'grief' then is it?---seems it's just one more personal opinion...

Yes, just one more *personal* opinion. I used the word 'grief' because the previous poster appeared to take this as a personal insult, and implied by comparison that I was calling *her* ugly. I don't know what she looks like, so how can I possibly comment on her looks, which comment would again be my own personal opinion. Opinions are just that, oppinions, not necessarily fact.

From some of the postings I've read on this site, and the language used to express oppions, I am really surprised that the word 'ugly' is creating such controversy. It seems to me that there are some 'thick-skinned' folks on here, who have voiced or heard words that are much worse then 'ugly'.

Ok, silly me for perpetuating this line of convo. This will be my last post on the matter...let's move on to other discussions instead of going back and forth about what we find attractive, and what we don't.

Addams grew up in Nashville, Tennessee.[2] She served as a Hospital Corpsman with the Navy and United States Marine Corps. During her last year in the military she came out as a transgender woman.[3] Addams chose the name "Calpernia" from the William Shakespeare play Julius Caesar (a variant spelling of Caesar's wife Calpurnia) and its appearance on a tombstone in the film The Addams Family.[3]

In 1999, while working as a performer, Addams began dating PFC Barry Winchell. Word of the relationship spread at Winchell's Army base where he was harassed, and ultimately murdered, by fellow soldiers.[4] Addams' and Winchell's romance and the crimes of their abusers are depicted in the film Soldier's Girl, released in 2003. Addams was portrayed by Lee Pace. A subsequent New York Times article, "An Inconvenient Woman", documented the marginalization and misrepresentation of transgender sexuality even by gay rights activists.[5]

"Things pop in my head that make me realise that I clearly suppressed these thoughts of being gay … because it was 'wrong', as a male it's 'wrong' but even more as an elite athlete," he said.

"I always knew that I lacked confidence when I stood up on the blocks and I do wonder sometimes if that lack of confidence was fear – fear of not really knowing who I am.

"On the sporting side, I lost to some amazing champions, so I'm not for a second saying that this is the reason I didn't win. I often wonder if the lack of self-confidence and lack of identity in many ways held me back from reaching my potential."

He added that he hoped to find love soon, saying: "I look for all the things straight people do. I want to fall in love and be happy and be proud of who I am."

from pbs.org (http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/episodes/annie-leibovitz/life-through-a-lens/16/)

Leibovitz met Susan Sontag in 1989 while photographing the writer for her book AIDS and its Metaphors. “I remember going out to dinner with her and just sweating through my clothes because I thought I couldn’t talk to her,” Leibovitz said in an interview with The New York Times late last year. Sontag told her, “You’re good, but you could be better.” Though the two kept separate apartments, their relationship lasted until Sontag’s death in late 2004.

Sontag’s influence on Leibovitz was profound. In 1993 Leibovitz traveled to Sarajevo during the war in the Balkans, a trip that she admits she would not have taken without Sontag’s input. Among her work from that trip is Sarajevo, Fallen Bicycle of Teenage Boy Just Killed by a Sniper, a black-and-white photo of a bicycle collapsed on blood-smeared pavement. Sontag, who wrote the accompanying essay, also first conceived of Leibovitz’s book Women (1999). The book includes images of famous people along with those not well known. Celebrities like Susan Sarandon and Diane Sawyer share space with miners, soldiers in basic training, and Las Vegas showgirls in and out of costume.

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore

2007 - In front of a full house of hardcore Potter fans at Carnegie Hall in New York, Rowling, sitting on the stage on a red velvet and carved wood throne, read from her seventh and final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," then took questions. One fan asked whether Albus Dumbledore, the head of the famed Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft, had ever loved anyone. Rowling smiled. "Dumbledore is gay, actually," replied Rowling as the audience erupted in surprise. She added that, in her mind, Dumbledore had an unrequited love affair with Gellert Grindelwald, Voldemort's predecessor who appears in the seventh book. After several minutes of prolonged shouting and clapping from astonished fans, Rowling added. "I would have told you earlier if I knew it would make you so happy."

According to Greek mythology and the Roman poet Ovid, who wrote about transformations in his Metamorphoses, Iphis (or Iphys) was the daughter of Telethusa and Ligdus in Crete. Ligdus had already threatened to kill his pregnant wife's child if it wasn't a boy. Telethusa despairs, but is visited in the middle of the night by the Egyptian goddess Isis, attended by Anubis and Apis, who assures her that all will be well.

When Telethusa gives birth to Iphis, she conceals her daughter's sex from her husband and raises her daughter as a boy. Iphis falls in love with another girl, Ianthe. Iphis is deeply in love and prays to Juno to allow her to marry her beloved.

When nothing happens, her mother Telethusa brings her to the temple of Isis and prays to the goddess to help her daughter. Isis responds by transforming Iphis into a man. The male Iphis marries Ianthe and the two live happily ever after. Their marriage is presided over by Juno, Venus, and Hymenaios, the god of marriage

While he was a top GOP operative, the Republican Party was actively pushing anti-gay marriage initiatives. Mehlman acknowledged that if not for his secret, he might have been a voice for a more conciliatory approach to gays, according to the interview on the Atlantic's website.

"It's a legitimate question and one I understand," Mehlman said. Now, he said, he will openly back gay marriage as consistent with such GOP principles as "individual freedom."

Was going to put this in the breaking news section, but it just cannot compete with the creation of anti-matter in a lab(!), but since our friend Eleanor was family, I thought I'd post this here:

'Franklin And Eleanor': A Marriage Ahead Of Its Time (http://www.npr.org/2010/11/11/131253000/-franklin-and-eleanor-a-marriage-ahead-of-its-time?sc=fb&cc=fp) from NPR

Both Franklin and Eleanor also "gave each other space" to cultivate romantic friendships outside of the marriage. Whether or not these relationships were physical is still up for debate, but the language of existing letters shows there's no question they were passionate. In Eleanor's case, those romantic friendships were with men, like her beloved bodyguard Earl Miller, as well as with women, like the journalist Lorena Hickok. It was no secret to her colleagues in the press corps that "Hick," as she was called, was a lesbian; nor was it a secret that she and Eleanor seemed to be deeply in love. A few months after FDR's first inauguration, Eleanor wrote to "Hick" about their open secret: "And so you think they gossip about us ... I am always so much more optimistic than you are. I suppose because I care so little about what 'they' say." By the way, Rowley can quote those fearless words because Lorena Hickok preserved almost all of the 3,500 letters she and Eleanor wrote to each other from 1932 until Eleanor's death.

The Roosevelt's nonconformist love lives, as well as their expansive impulses to turn the White House into a World War II-era hippie crash pad, have been recounted by other superb biographers, notably Blanche Wiesen Cook and Doris Kearns Goodwin. What distinguishes Rowley's chronicle is her focus on the evolution of the Roosevelt marriage from a standard-issue high-society alliance of its day to a ... what? We don't even have a term for such an unconventional relationship — certainly "open marriage" sounds too naughty, although "open" is what the Roosevelts clearly became.

Of course, they didn't transform their marriage out of mere happy whim. There was the harrowing tragedy of FDR's polio and his rehabilitation, which naturally forced the couple apart. During the late 1920s, Rowley points out, Franklin was away from home for 116 weeks: Eleanor was with him for four of those weeks; his secretary, Missy LeHand, was with him for 110.

And then there were the failures that loosened both the marital and family ties: FDR's affair with Lucy Mercer; Eleanor's rather strained style of parenting the couple's six children. Eleanor, an eternal daddy's girl, sadly confessed later in life that: "I do not think that I am a natural born mother. ... If I ever wanted to mother anyone, it was my father." Rowley doesn't excuse these flaws but traces how the hard times helped the couple achieve what she dubs "one of the most interesting and radical marriages in history."

http://www.britannica.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/ted-kaczunski.jpg

This morning for some reason I began reading about Ted Kaczynski's psychological profile and I ran across this (http://home.online.no/~s-de-la/UNABOMBER.htm):

While at the University of Michigan he sought psychiatric contact on one occasion at the start of his fifth year of study. As referenced above, he had been experiencing several weeks of intense and persistent sexual excitement involving fantasies of being a female. During that time period he became convinced that he should undergo sex change surgery. He recounts that he was aware that this would require a psychiatric referral, and he set up an appointment at the Health Center at the University to discuss this issue. He describes that while waiting in the waiting room, he became anxious and humiliated over the prospect of talking about this to the doctor. When he was actually seen, he did not discuss these concerns, but rather claimed he was feeling some depression and anxiety over the possibility that the deferment status would be dropped for students and teachers, and that he would face the possibility of being drafted into the military. He indicates that the psychiatrist viewed his anxiety and depression as not atypical. Mr. Kaczynski describes leaving the office and feeling rage, shame, and humiliation over this attempt to seek evaluation. He references this as significant turning point in his life.

or not.

"He claimed that by putting on an act he could con the psychiatrist into thinking him suitable for a feminine role even though his motive was exclusively erotic. "

"As I walked away from the building afterwards, I felt disgusted about what my uncontrolled sexual cravings had almost led me to do and I felt - humiliated, and I violently hated the psychiatrist. Just then there came a major turning point in my life. "

That morning, Max announced on his ESPN 1050/WEPN early morning show that he was gay.

“I had to do this for myself,” Max admits. “I’m 37 now [at] what point do I say, ‘This is the one life we know we’re going to have, what the hell am I keeping quiet for? Why am I doing this to myself?”

Max, who came out to his mother when he was 21, was ready to make peace on a larger scale thanks to his cats.

“I remember telling my cat Mush the night before, ‘I think something might happen tomorrow.’”

By the next morning, Max still uncertain told his other cat, “Things might be a little different when I come home.”

As he arrived at the station, the potential decision obviously weighed heavily on his mind. Max began to work on scripts for his show, starting with a piece on his being gay. He had it saved for the program’s end.

“It wasn’t until 10, 15, 20, 30 seconds before that I knew, ‘Ok, I’m doing it,’” Max admits.

Max, well known to commuters for his morning drive sports reports on WCBS 880 for more than a decade, joined 1050 on March 30.

“It’s just that great fear that I wouldn’t be able to be myself,” Max says. “And for the first nine days on the air, I really wasn’t myself.”

Once he told his audience, Max admits that his confidence was back.

“Then on Friday, I went in and for the first time I had felt I had the exact same swagger back that I had while I was at CBS.”

Part of the reason Max jumped ship to ESPN was to host his own 5 a.m. show, before handling local updates on The Mike and Mike Show. That helped to suppress the veteran sports anchor from coming out at 880.

“I did two-minute sportscasts and where was I going to squeeze it in,” Max says.

But Max also had timing on his side. In recent weeks, a couple of high-profile sports figures said they were gay. Rick Welts, the Phoenix Suns president and CEO, became the first team sports exec to come out. Former Villanova basketball standout Will Sheridan also told the world about his sexuality. In addition, CNN anchor Don Lemon joined the growing list of notable personalities finding comfort in their own skin.

Max, who has been single since November 2010, says being in a relationship isn’t easy—straight or gay—when you’re getting up for work at 1 a.m.

Now, as Max makes his way publicly through the second phase of his career, he is overwhelmed by the positive feedback, especially by his new employer.

“They’ve just been absolutely phenomenal,” Max says. “I got a phone call on Friday afternoon from George Bodenheimer, the president of ESPN, calling to offer his support, congratulations, and good luck.”

With so many text messages and emails from other well-wishers, Max knew almost instantly he made the right decision.

“This has taken off in a way that I never knew could be this way,” Max says. “I felt things later that day after coming out [that] I never knew I would feel. Life is good… I have such an incredible wealth of friends and love and support and knowledge. I feel like one of the richest men in the world.”

Sara Gilbert! - Little sister of Melissa Gilbert, and start of tv's "Roseanne"

I was in Santa Cruz on the way to the SF Pride Parade with three friends and we pulled into an In/Out -- and Melissa Gilbert was right there in front of our windshield. Of course, my non-Californian friends had to yell out "Darlene!!" and she scowled and hurried away. I was mortified.

I don't know why, but Leonard came to my mind today at the SF VA Medical Center. I had the honor and privilege of knowing him.

"The epitaph he chose to mark his grave is still as fresh as today's headlines: 'When I was in the military they gave me a medal for killing two men and a discharge for loving one'." -- The Associated Press.

It has been an unfathomable thirty-five years since TSGT Leonard Matlovich, the first service member to out himself to fight the military's ban, walked out of the Langley Air Force Base hearing where his discharge had just been announced and held a Kennedy Bicentennial half dollar up to waiting mesmerized reporters. Ironically, it was engraved with an image of Philadelphia's Independence Hall where his mentor gay rights pioneer Frank Kameny had first led a gay rights demonstration a decade before. Leonard told them:

"It says '200 Years of Freedom'. Maybe not in my lifetime but we are going to win in the end."

Anna Paquin Counters Biphobia in New Statements (http://www.glaad.org/blog/anna-paquin-counters-biphobia-new-statements)

"I’m sure for some people saying they’re bisexual feels less scary than making a statement that they’re gay.” Paquin told the interviewer. "For me, it’s not really an issue because I’m someone who believes being bisexual is actually a thing. It’s not made up. It’s not a lack of decision. It’s not being greedy or numerous other ignorant things I’ve heard at this point….. For a bisexual, it’s not about gender. That’s not the deciding factor for who they’re attracted to."

Can you confirm this? What I see is that she is going to be the grand marshal for the Pride but I can't find where she says she is gay. I really admire her so it would be cool if she is. But, I know that there have been gay-supportive grand marshals so maybe that's her position?

Keeping my fingers crossed.

In a new profile in the New York Times, The Big Bang Theory star is matter-of-factly described "gay and in a 10-year relationship."

Jim Parsons never directly addresses his sexuality or elaborates on the remark in the profile, and his rep had no additional comment when reached.

The Times profile couches its revelation in the context of the actor's most recent Broadway role as Tommy Boatwright in Larry Kramer's powerful play, The Normal Heart, about gay men dying of AIDS in New York in the '80s.

According to the profile, "The Normal Heart resonated with him on a few levels: Mr. Parsons is gay and in a 10-year relationship, and working with an ensemble again onstage was like nourishment, he said."

When Obama made his groundbreaking public announcement advocating gay marriage, he probably didn’t expect his earth-shattering liberal legacy to extend first and foremost to fictional characters. But love moves in mysterious ways, and in this case dons a cape and some lycra. Marvel Comics’ only openly gay X-Man, Northstar, is proposing to his boyfriend.

This all happens in the “Astonishing X-Men” issue out this week. The couple are to have a wedding ceremony in New York City’s Central Park, only after Northstar – who came out in a pioneering issue of the comic in 1992 – plucks up the courage to propose to his long-term boyfriend Kyle, which plays out with some rather adorable self-awareness in the speech bubbles:

Northstar, ears pointing in tense anticipation: “We need to talk…I’m not going to vomit. I’m just…nervous.”

Kyle, nonplussed: “Are we being invaded by aliens again?”

Marvel decided that this momentous occasion should take place when the state of New York legalized gay marriage in June last year. Tom Brevoort, Marvel executive editor, explained to New York Daily News:

“A lot of our Marvel super heroes live in and around New York City so it just immediately became an issue we started thinking about.”

This storyline is the latest example of the comic book world’s concerted effort to raise LGBT awareness using its popular and well-known characters.

Dan Didio (not a comic character himself, despite how it sounds), editor in chief of D.C. Comics – which publishes the Superman and Batman titles, among others – dropped a tantalizing hint a few days ago that one of D.C.’s characters would soon be flying out of the closet, although our next gay superhero’s identity is under wraps until next month. (And no, the longstanding Batman-Robin bromance doesn’t count).

Actually, D.C. already has one crime-fighting gay heroine: Batwoman, described as “a lesbian socialite by night and a crime-fighter by later in the night,” who made her first appearance with the D.C. imprint Detective Comics in 2009.

Herndon Graddick, President of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, praised Northstar and Kyle’s coming nuptials: “When a major comic publisher like Marvel not only includes, but publicly celebrates, the legal wedding of two of its gay characters, it reflects how supporting same-sex couples has become the new normal … Readers expect to see their realities portrayed in these fictional worlds and today that includes married gay and lesbian couples.”

Let us not forget the American-born, Canadian-citizen, author, educator and activist Jane Rule. She wrote the book "Desert of the Heart" which was later made into the movie "Desert Hearts" by producer and director, Donna Deitch (herself a noted lesbian contributor to the arts).

Jane and her long-time partner Helen (also an author), lived for over 25 years on Galiano Island in Vancouver, BC. Noted by the small and intimate island community to be both kind and generous, they effectively offered the use of their private swimming pool to be used by the island community at large. In fact, three generations of islanders would tell you they learned to swim in their pool, Jane standing Life Guard for countless summmers.

I had the pleasure of knowing "Aunt J" personally, as her niece and I were lovers, living together for three years or so. Jane and Helen were such profoundly decent people, grounded and eschewing all the entrapments that come with celebrity status. I miss them both but am so grateful to live in the world they helped make for me, solely by speaking and living their truths.

Swedish alpine skiing star Anja Paerson ended years of rumours Saturday when she revealed she had a long-term girlfriend, Filippa, and that she is expecting a baby.

"I am tired of being someone else and of playing a game. I owe it to myself and especially to Filippa to tell the truth," Paerson said on a programme on Swedish public radio that each week during the summer has a new celebrity host.

The 31-year-old Olympic champion, who retired following the World Cup earlier this year in Schladming, Austria, has for years faced rumours about her personal life.

Stop the press: A mainstream, black, male artist in hip-hop revealed his first love was with a man. Only weeks before the release of Frank Ocean's (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/clay-cane/frank-ocean-gay_b_1651099.html) debut solo album on Def Jam, Channel Orange, he opened up about his sexuality via Tumblr. A huge risk for the member of the edgy hip-hop group Odd Future -- admitting you are anything but heterosexual and ultra-masculine in hip-hop normally equates career suicide, which is what makes the 24-year-old's admission so powerful -- his honesty is more important than the album sales.

Only an hour into Independence Day, Ocean posted: "Four summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Every day almost, and on the day we were together, time would glide. Most of the day I'd see him, and his smile. By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless." He described a deep love that forever changed him, staying with the singer-songwriter for years. Ocean added, "I don't have secrets I need kept anymore... I feel like a free man."

Hip hop mogul Russell Simmons reacted on his personal blog: (http://globalgrind.com/entertainment/russell-simmons-letter-to-frank-ocean-gay-bi-sexual-comes-out-photos/)

Today is a big day for hip-hop. It is a day that will define who we really are. How compassionate will we be? How loving can we be? How inclusive are we? I am profoundly moved by the courage and honesty of Frank Ocean. Your decision to go public about your sexual orientation gives hope and light to so many young people still living in fear. These types of secrets should not matter anymore, but we know they do, and because of that I decided to write this short statement of support for one of the greatest new artists we have. His gifts are undeniable. His talent, enormous. His bravery, incredible. His actions this morning will uplift our consciousness and allow us to become better people. Every single one of us is born with peace and tranquility in our heart. Frank just found his.
