Ok, so I was hungry n decided to make me a hot dog.
:badcook:
I chopped up some Roma tomatoes n red onions n added ketchup...right?
:chainsaw:
Mrs. Daywalker did not want a hot dog.
Until she saw mine.
:|
But then she proceeded to icky-poo at me putting Ketchup on mine!
:shocking:
:seconddoh:
So I thought this called for a Poll.

It's Multiple choice and then some.

Wasn't going to post until I saw Vixen's post.
OMG! I so want to try that!
I was in Atlanta once for a conference and was right across from the Varsity. However - no one wanted to go over as it was "just a drive-in" - oh, how I wish I had gone!
My hot-dog condiments vary - depending on when I eat the hot-dog.
Summer bbq - ketchup, yellow mustard and corn relish. Sometimes chilli.
At home - ketchup, yellow or sweet onion mustard, cheese.
But if it is a grilled sausage - then saurekraut and yellow mustard.
Question: which brand of hot dogs do you prefer?
toasted roll? poppyseed or plain?

Onions, mustard, relish.
Now, I want a hot dog.
Best bargain in NY: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray's_Papaya
There are hot dogs - which I will only eat if boiled, placed in a lightly toasted bun. No fixings on them.
Then there are the New York System hot weiners I grew up with in R.I. - a grilled premuim weiner placed in a steamed bun, with spicy mustard, special meat sauce, chopped onions, and celery salt - in that order. Wrapped in twos in wax paper, then a paper bag. The oil from the special sauce used to leak straight thru everything. Gawd I miss being able to eat like that.

Nothing goes on my hot dog, though my hot dog may go in a bun. None of those icky seeded or fancy ass buns, though, just a plain cheap soft bun. I see all the crap that people load up on their hot dogs and wonder why they bother with meat, since you can't possibly taste it through the piles of relishes and pickles and mustards and peppers and other such nonsense. Just skip the hot dog and put the condiments directly on a bun; it'll have fewer calories and you won't waste the money paying for the meat that you won't even taste.
Not that I have strong feelings about hot dogs and all the crap people that put on them or anything.....:giggle:

For those who might not know...if you are craving the Chicago style hot dog, and do not live in Chicago...you can order them through Vienna Beef. They send you the whole "hot dog" kit: dogs, buns, condiments, fixins. I know this because I ordered them for a homesick ex once as a present. (yes that's right...a present. Gift wrapped hotdogs...just call me a romantic. LOL)

Gemme
04-13-2010, 04:58 PM
Day, duuuuude, you didn't include the option for relish by itself and I surely will not add cheese and mayo with the relish. Not happening.
So, I prefer mustard, ketchup and relish on the dog usually. Unless it's a chili dog and then it's chili (duh) and dog. Onions only if they are sauted. I don't like my breath smelling like the ass end of a root veggie, yanno?
I've tried other ways and some were okay and some were along the lines of "What were you THINKING???"
Subs (via the Way of Subs, of course), however, are a different, more complex story. I either get a veggie, roast beef or BLT with the following items:
on the days I want cheese, it's a half order of pepperjack
on the days I get the BLT, it's a half order of the bacon (4 slices instead of 8)
lettuce
spinach
tomatoes
banana peppers
bell peppers
black olives
pickles
pepper
lots and lots of red wine vinegar
and, sometimes, I'll have them put a thin strip of the Chipotle Southwest sauce on it
It's got hella amounts of sodium no matter which one I get, but I love it. :tease:

Tommy's Original (If you don't see the Shack, take it back.)
With mustard, onions, chili, cheese, tomato, and dill pickles....plus hot yellow chili peppers.....

Ok...here we go. I thought this thread was nasty. And then I saw some of these pictures and now I KNOW it's nasty! <giggling>
So. Here's my perfect hotdog:
1. The wienie MUST be the same length as the bun. It's just heinous if it's not.
2. First, I put a fine line of Gulden's Spice Mustard in the MIDDLE of each side of the bun. (Why yes, it IS a science, thank You very much.)
3. Second, and along the mustard line, polka dots of ketchup. About the size of a pencil eraser. It cannot argue with the mustard, just enhance it.
4. Third, (is it bothering You yet that I'm on number 4 and just said "third"?) tiny dollops of SWEET pickle relish on ONE side only, the bottom side. Cuz that's just how I roll.
5. Fourth, the perfectly grilled dog, with just enough burnt to give it some texture.
6. Fifth, a heaping spoonful of a lovely chili, drizzled down the dog and pressed into the crevace between wienie and bun on the TOP side.
7. Sixth, sprinkle LIBERALLY (It must be a democrat hot dog!) with finely grated sharp cheddar.
SPECIAL NOTE: IF the others are having onions on THEIR dawgs, then I shall, too, 1 tablespoon of finely chopped red onion which should go between the chili and the cheese.
And THAT, my friends, is MY perfect dawg.

Second best onion and mustard
Third best relish and mustard

{I never ate hot dogs unless it was from a specific Vendor while in High School, mebbe it was the water he used *lol*}
Nowadays?
Preferably "Nathan"'s
Warm Bun, Equal size to the Hot Dog, kthnx !!!
a very thin line of Spicy Mustard, warm sauerkraut, small helping of relish, sautee'd onions{i'll add a small bit of tomato paste to the onions if I have time}..

I forgot to mention, at home I prefer Hebrew National because they answer to a higher authority.
I like to use Gulden's spicy brown mustard and I'll put diced onions and tomatoes on it. Lastly I like wheat hot dog buns at home.
I prefer brats.
But if it's a dog, I prefer it Chicago style:
Yellow Mustard
Bright "Neon" Green Relish
Fresh Chopped Onions
Two Tomato Wedges
A Pickle Spear or Slice
Two Sport Peppers
A Dash of Celery Salt
Kosmo
04-13-2010, 07:04 PM
On a Hebrew National: Just mustard and onions. Wouldn't want to hide that great dawg flavor.
On any other poser dawgs: Depends on what's offered and what I can get to stay on. Under no circumstances will there be catsup (that's for scrambled eggs) or as a side dish all it's own. :)
Toasted bun would be nice, but not necessary because sometimes I like the bun to squish.
Rufusboi
04-13-2010, 07:55 PM
Mayo, nice and thick. Ketchup criscrossed about 4-5 times across the bottom of the bun. Chopped onions under and on top of the dog. Relish on top in a nice thick layer. And an all beef dog (no filler type). Any brand of bun will do. And that's how I make my favorite hot dog.

Being from Chicagoland and all, I prefer Vienna Beef and there's only one place in Louisville that sells Chicago food (italian beef too...mmmm). Steamed poppyseed bun with only mustard.
If I eat them at home, which is rare, they have to be Hebrew National, grilled until black. Again, only mustard.

it has to be grilled on a grill or in a fry pan with a bit of butter
2. bun has to be New England style

3. Cheese 1.5 slices of Kraft deluxe american cheese
4. ketchup and yellow mustard

Try an Italian dog from Dickey Dee's in Newark, New Jersey. They even have potatoes on them. It was a bit much for me, but if you're ever on the East Coast and searching for something different it's worth a knosh.

Y'all certainly aren't journalist because I'm here to tell you that we'll eat damn near anything free put in front of us at halftime of a game, and that includes hot dogs. *grin*
Now, that said, I prefer Nathan's please. Or Grey Papaya in NYC.
Not a fan of onions or relish, but almost anything else is fair game.
Typically, I'll eat my dog with mustard and kraut. I also like chili and cheese and love me some slaw dogs.

The Poll thingy does not come up until you post the new thread, and

as to make the whole thing timely n stuff. Apparently I was amiss in
said drafting, and suddenly I had to hurry and type out like 8 options
and people were already posting and there I was still typing shit and
I was hella trying to hurry, then realized I only chose 8 options and
ran outta lines to put in other stuff...and there you have it.

Before I got my cholesteral results: bacon. :boink: But alas, no more. :flyingpig:
I LOVE trying different types of relish - especially home-made. :cheer: Mustard: only the kinds made with uncooked seeds. :seconddoh: Really! It makes a big difference! And onions. Preferably cooked.
But the absolute best thing to try with your hot dog: :beerbros: Especially when it's :tanning: out.

Sometimes I grill them to a crisp but when I get more into it this is how i fix em'...........
:4femme:First I cut em open length wise. I cook the weiners in a pan with butter and diced onions, sauteing the onions, seasoning to flavor. Then just before the weiners are finished, I slip cheese into them, allowing time for the cheese to melt. Then, I remove them from the pan, butter a bun and toast it in the pan. Once finished, I put mayo, spicy mustard, hot sauce, and sauteed onions on the bun with the weiner.. yumm:badcook:

Ok, but how do I get a photo into this post ?
Where do I upload them to ?
I was reading this thread last night and I was reminded of the Dutch version of a hotdog that I was "treated" to last year while visiting the Netherlands.
I give you, the frikandel:
http://andreiphx.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/frikandel_speciaal.jpg
The Dutch, not really known for their cuisine, well, except they do have outstanding cheeses and breads, consider this their version of a "hot dog." It is a deep-fried long, thin (and I might add nasty) sausage, of which one of the ingredients is horse meat. Yes, horse meat. And please note the Dutchies love their fries (or frietjes) with a mayo-based sauce that has a slight pickle-like taste to it. If you ask for ketchup with them, they know right away you are an American.
After experiencing it, but avoiding another Dutch "delicacy" - raw herring -- I took my Dutch girlfriend to the Ikea in her city, where we had American-style hot dogs. Even she noted they were a distinct improvement.
And don't even get me started on that other favorite Dutch treat -- bitterballen. You can even order them at the McDonald's over there. lol

I love them burned on the outdoor grill, then stand back while I grab four hot dog buns and squirt with ketchup and mustard. This won't be pretty! LOL!
Damn DW, you have me so hungry for a hot dog ... it's in the 20s outside,11:30ish p.m. and no chance of me getting out to buy hot dogs and even less that I would fire up my grill right now. :(

I always get sort of a Chicago dog: ketchup, mayo, sweet relish, tomatoes, pickles.
In fact, when I go to the local hotdog shop, I ask for a Chicago dog with mayo, but without the onions, peppers, and mustard. :winky:

Steamed
Mustard
Relish
Onions
And......celery salt !!!
First squirt ketchup ,yellow mustard and goldens dark mustard on the bun. Then the dog goes on. Then smother it with finely minced white onion, then cover that with chili (no bean ever) then cover that with saurkraut and compress it down real hard to pack it all tightly together. And enjoy ! That is how I like them.

Damn, that is a lot of thought put into how to make a hot dog. Come sit beside me, I am just as selective :)
I like either:
~mustard, sauerkraut & sauce (the kind that most hot dog places have)
***OR***
~mustard topped with chili (meat only please)
I do not eat ketchup on them at all and do not vary from the two choices above. I am really picky about hot dogs when they are good, they are yummy but when they are bad, gross.

Beach dogs have to be grilled and topped with ketchup, mustard, onions, and sweet relish.
Ballpark dogs need only ketchup and mustard, but it must be accompanied with a warm ballpark beer in a paper cup.
Home dogs get ketchup, mustard, onion, sweet relish, cheese and chili.
NY city street vendor dogs get chefs choice because they each have their own special way of making them and topping them.
Movie hotdogs get nothing cause i am not paying 9 dollars for a hotdog!!!

Smother, hover and cover it with everything ya got.
Mayo, mustard, ketchup, pickle relish, chili, onions, chili peppers and anything else that is handy.
BUT...one condition...
I can eat it to about 1 inch from the end. When the hotdog is gone and all that is left if the ooey gooey wet bread, i'm done.
They just don't make them wieners long enough.
What a crazy world we live in.

mayo with a little mustard and ketchup. every now and then a bit of dill relish. i don't eat hot dogs very often so i tend to always eat the same thing on them. sometimes if i'm at a restaurant with special toppings i'll add cheese and maybe sauteed shrooms or onions. i want to branch out and try weird things but i'm a pansy when it comes to hot dogs (or burgers)...i like what i like and i tend to stick to that cause i'm always craving it.
i also prefer hebrew national because that way i know it doesn't have pork. :) thankfully most vendors and restaurants i've been to nowadays use hebrew national.

OK, where to start. Out here we have hot dogs and we have wieners... and yes they are indeed different.
A hot dog: it's about 6" long....made of beef
we often find them at ball games, throw one on the grill during a summer cookout etc. Served on either a steamed, grilled, or right out of the bag bun.
For me during such days Ketchup is a must and sometimes onions.
A Wiener: it's about 5" long.... made of veal and pork
placed in a steamed bun, then topped with a meat sauce seasoned with a myriad of spices like cumin, paprika, chili powder and allspice, which is itself covered in finely chopped onions, celery salt and yellow mustard

I watched a show on the Food Network once a few years ago..and on one of the Hawaiian Islands, is a place called "Puka Dogs"...and NOW I want to go and have some so badly. I believe if you google them, you will find out about them.
Basically they place a bun on one end, on a pointed,, sharp spike, that toasts it..then slide a wiener inside and fill with so many differing condiments..one is like coconut sauce, and so many other exotic ones...yummmmmI WANT ONE! NOW!!!!

Oh My Mr. Day! You actually got me to thinking and I like them more than one way...depends on the day.
Sometimes I make them with ketchup and lots of raw sweet onions.
Other times I do them with hot mustard from McDonald's
Still yet there are kraut dog days with mustard
And lastly, there is the days that I want chili cheese mustard and a ton of raw sweet onions.
Like I said just depends on the day...Haahaa! Day---day. Ok. I crack myself up!

When at home (it's a staple for the "fend for yourself" dinner) I have 2 Oscar Mayer beef hot dogs, first boiled a little to heat, then pan seared ('cause boiled hot dogs are just nasty), split in half length-wise, put a slice of american cheese and let it melt. Served on toast (just regular bread, I don't use hotdog buns 'cause they're a luxury), slather BOTH sides with plenty of ketchup. (It's actually the only thing I eat ketchup on, but will not eat a hot dog if it doesn't have ketchup.)
Out in public, I love them all kinds of ways.
