View Full Version : Where is your slice of heaven?

Kobi

I was sitting on the beach reading today. As usual my mind started wandering and I was very aware of no matter what is going on in my life, no matter what my mood, no matter what is on my mind......the ocean is where I go.

Here, I find peace in the waves, enjoy the warmth from the sun, experience joy in watching and feeding my pals the seagulls (these notorious savengers will eat anything but fruit loops), awaken the child in me in finding treasures in the sand, and find the answers to anything I am struggling with, just popping into my head.

It is the place where I feel one with nature and the place I can always feel and hear God.

Where do you go?

Same with me, Kobi. I grew up in Southern California as a real surfer 'baby' and the beach was my most favorite place to be. I loved diving in to the waves, sitting in the sun and digging my toes in to the hot sand while I was looking way out to the endless horizon. I found the sound of the waves most comforting and enjoyed the fresh salty breeze. I love the ocean, the beach. Always have, always will...oh..how I miss it!

Kat

ps: never liked the seagulls that much though..they always tried to pick at my crackers..lol...

Submission.

Definitely the most peaceful place on earth.

Silence.... Difficult to arrange, but where I need to be when the static mounts. Taking off on a secluded walk/hike or camping is my usual trek to being able to not talk myself and be clear of many human voice intrusions. LOL.. I have even gone into a few days of seclusion in monastic life institutions for this (without any particular religious meaning attached)!

Just how I clear my own clutter ......

In the late spring/summer:
Sitting in a beach chair on the beach about 4pm to 4:30pm just as the sun is setting. I find it so refreshing. Perfect time.

In the fall:
Outside in a garden...alone.

In the winter:
When it's snowing, I find it defining. Love it!

The thing about heaven, is you have to be able to get there. If only I could live on the Cape year-round. Coney Island doesn't quite cut it, though it has its own charms.

A seagull once snatched the hot dog out of the bun my son had in his mouth.

I think my current heaven is in a little cafe near my house that has free Wi-fi, is always quiet, and has the best coffee around.

One particular slice of heaven for me is on my bicycle. When everything else slips away, but being inside the beating of my own heart,as it labors mightily to get me to the top of a hill,or trying to seperate the racing of the wind, with the pounding of my heart, when I am tucked in,and tearing down the hill at 35-40 mph, with nothing between me and a bad case of road rash, but instinct, reflexes and a bit of intestinal fortitude. That for me,is where only existing ends and true living starts. Heaven is when I am singing or playing my drum. When I enter trance and remember there is no veil between spirit and myself.

Spiritual Healings are very peaceful and beautiful. When I see or feel my patient release, that is a step closer to heaven.

When I see a spirit depart - whether clearing a house or during depossession, the deep peace that gives me is indescribable. The bliss can last for hours after.

Barring that & I am at work - a really good strong make my heart pound cup of coffee... mmmmmm

No matter how awesome the view, how spectacular the surroundings, I have discovered that "heaven" lies within myself. Not to be condecending or anything, but I do not have the capabilities to go to see one of these awesome sights of mother nature everyday, so I tend to close my eyes, and visualize all the concepts of "heaven". I guess to me, heaven is not what I see, but what it makes me feel inside. Just my :2cents:

Interesting reading about everyone's peaceful places whether it's an outside stimulus that triggers an internal peace or vice versa.
My peaceful place is within but there are times when it helps to have peaceful surroundings to help trigger a heightened sense of peace, calm, etc.. for me it's the mountains or being outside in nature away from computers, phones, etc.. it lets me know what is really important and what really matters and that is so incredibly humbling it brings me down to reality.. that is 'peaceful'.

I've always been partial to the Smokey Mountains, and Cades Cove in particular. Something draws me there and I really can't pinpoint what, but it is a place that I find peaceful and restful. I love it there.

I like the mountains in general, but the Smokies have always topped the list.

No place like home, right here on Peaceful Ridge is my slice of heaven most of the time. But I'm right there with Oiler, I love my Smokey Mountains. I haven't lost much at the beach but I will go there in the off seasons.

I guess it changes from time to time. During my work week, I love the drive I do twice a week from Albany to the edge of the Berkshires. Highways and roads have distinct characters. That particular ride is so peaceful and relaxing to me.

If I could be anywhere, it would be sitting in a comfortable chair on my (still to be constructed) screened-in porch. My backyard is a private, dense, green space that smells and sounds like the deep woods.

I strive to make my life relaxing enough that I don't need a vacation in order to find peace.

Horses. Breathing in their scent. Feeling the thickness of their manes. Offering them treats and being lipped by their almost prehensile upper lip asking and looking for more. Grooming them. Shedding away the loose hair and expecting more to be on me than on them after I am done. Petting the space between their eyes and knowing they cannot see it..only feel it. Their eyes work on the sides, not in front. They are prey animals and need side vision more than they need front vision. Knowing they trust me to lay my hands where they cannot see. Listening ...as they eat the grain I drop into their feeder. Finding solace in the simple quiet contented noises of them enjoying what I provide for them. Loving how they drink...quietly dipping their lips in the water and watching their throat latch swallow as they drink...then as they rise their head out of the bucket, leftover water drains from them...and their eyes get heavy with satiation....

Horses...

For me, heaven is many things, constantly changing...but the thing that remains the same is the deep sense of peace and timelessness I feel inside. Here are some examples, some general and some very specific, of my slices of heaven....

Seagull Point, the stretch of Lake Huron beach where I grew up.

The streets of Bruges in Belgium, where I had easily the most romantic experience with another person I have ever had.

Any visit to Snowbound Books in Marquette, Michigan.

The French Quarter.

Between the creamy thighs of a beautiful woman.

Over a cup of coffee or similar hot beverage with a person of amazing soul.

A hike along Rainbow Falls Gorge near Bessemer, Michigan.

A strip of beach on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Thompson's Harbor State Park in northern Michigan with warblers dripping from the trees on a mid-May morning.

A hike in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore area of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, with its remnant boreal forests.

A great meal at Second Empire in Raleigh, NC; or Della Notte in Baltimore, MD; Cascadia in Seattle (now closed) or the Rowe Inn in Ellsworth, MI; or the best chicken salad wrap ever at Dish in Traverse City, MI; shrimp and grits at NoFo or the Flying Biscuit in Raleigh; or great deli at The Bagel in Chicago.

Any art museum, anywhere.

A night game at Comerica Park in Detroit.

I would have to say that what I would consider to be my slice of heaven are places where all the thoughts I have in my mind become quiet and I am just being and living in the "here and now" of the time and place. I have been in two such places.

More slices of heaven....

Election Night 2002 in Michigan.

An apartment overlooking the canal in Delfshaven.

Watching fireworks on spring holiday from the balcony at the above-mentioned apartment.

A stretch of nearly-deserted beach in DeHaan, Belgium.

Sitting on the terrace of a cafe in DeHaan on a sunny day, having a late breakfast, an amazingly pretty girl sitting across from me smiling, her dog at my feet and sharing the best omelette ever.

Any stolen kiss.

Any stolen kiss in a doorway in the rain.

Reading Sock Monkey books with my nieces.

Farmers markets.

I have a secret place - a place I used to go to when I was growing up when things got rough.
Even if the place is just a memory today it still gives me comfort. I close my eyes and I am back in the forest where I grew up. I sit on the ground leaning against a fir tree looking out on the small lake. I see the dragonflies hovering silently over white and yellow waterlillies. I feel the warmth of the sun on my face and I smell the warm earth around me. I hear the birds sing happily above or rustling in the dead leaves nearby in search of food. I hear bumble bees passing by. I see the rings on the water after fish jumping. On the other side of the lake there is a beaver lodge, and if I am quiet at dusk I see them swimming around to find food. Maybe if Im lucky I see a fox or a moose.
I sit absolutely quiet not to disturb any of them in the hopes that one day, maybe they will accept me as part of them and not be afraid of me.

Today...
curled up in bed and being grateful for this beautiful, peaceful home to come home to, after spending the night in the hospital horribly sick (it knocked me off my ass, in the fetal position and was completely unexpected). I'm safe and cared for here (by several dear friends and one that stuck by me every bit of the way)... that safe place is a slice of heaven.

My slice of heaven is a very, very small town in VA called Floyd. I think that it is the most wonderful place on earth. If I could find a place to live there, I'd be there now! Floyd is so small that when I left Va, about 10 years ago, they had just gotten their first traffic light. The town is a weird blend of Mew-Age Hippy and Redneck that somehow works beautifully. Farm supply stores sit right beside artisan craft store on the main street. Two world-renown restaurants that hold showcases for local singer-songwriters plus famous singers use only local produce in their mainly vegetarian dishes. A Wintersun apparel store located there holds wonderful sales from which I've bought my favorite clothing. A food co-op has delicious foods, teas, beauty products, etc.
One of the coolest things about Floyd consists in the fact that they have their own currency! They are Floyd notes. From what I've gathered, one Floydnote=one hour of work, or whatever is negotiated between employee and employer. Most of the local businesses take Floydnotes as payment. One can even redeem them at the local bank in town for "real" money.
Floyd also hosts every year a world-renown artisan, song-writer, whatever festival called FloydFest. Local mingle with celebrities as they look through artisans booths, listen to music, munch on all types of food from food kiosks, or just stretch out and enjoy the Virginia sun. Used to cost 75.00 for the entire two day fest. I'm sure the cost is considerably more by now. I always told myself I would go but left before I did.
Yes, if only I had a craft or a way to live there, I would. I DO hope to at least get back there for a Wintersun sale one day. I'd make, week[end out of it ,but there's no place to stay! I hope Floyd remains a small town as in my dreams!

i am at peace in nature..

any scenery, be it the ocean, the mountains, the wilderness..
the breathtaking views, the ability to just relax and take it all in..
the fresh air, the distant soothing sounds, no traffic, no hustle & bustle, no telephones ringing or tv blaring..

just me, my dreams & soaring imagination.. ♥

---

Also, there is one place i would go to, mostly as a teen and in my early adult years, which involved some deep woods hiking and climbing up some rocks..the view was magnificent, so serene & peaceful and not a soul in sight.. it had caves that i explored, and one huge rock had a dip in it just the right size for me & my dog Teiko (the only one i ever shared this place with) and we'd lay there sky gazing, and taking in the silence, so relaxing.

i haven't been there in about 9 years now, so this spring, i will hike up that mountain again.. though without my Teiko around, it just won't be the same, but she will be with me, i know it!

My little slice of heaven is a small beach about 15 minutes drive away from my Mum house. It's in a little village called Alnmouth, just a little old fishing village, which is packed with history.
The beach itself is open to everyone, although there's a charge to park there during the summertime, but it's more than worth it, because it's a doggy heaven, everyone who owns a dog around here ends up there at some point, you can sit on the concrete blocks that were originally placed there as coastal defences for the second world war and sit and look out at the sea, with loads of dogs running around and having the time of their lives. It's not too noisy, it's not overly crowded and it's your choice whether or not you talk to anyone there, but you've not got much choice when it comes to talking to peoples dogs, whether you love them or not, they come bounding up to you to say hello.
But it's one of the few places I know I can go and let down all my barriers and completely relax without having to worry about dealing with other peoples shit.
I value places like this beach, because I know it's also up to me whether or not I choose to talk to spirits which may be around at the time, which is the real reason why I love this place, I don't have to be constantly guarding myself from people...
I love this little island I call home!

No doubt about it. One hundred and ten percent....the beach, any beach...at sunset.

When it's quiet a the end of the day, just as the sun touches the dark blue. When the breeze is soft and warm and the sand is cool between my toes. The sounds of the birds and the waves crashing sooth me. The salt on my lips and face calm me. The vastness of the ocean grounds me, centers me and helps me realize just how magnificent this world really is.

before i left kentucky my son and I would pack up the car and head to pigeon forge/gatlinburg for a weekend. we would stop along side the road between the 2 and climb around in the creek just hanging out

the beach has always been an escape for me--once i moved to florida, and was only 5 mins away i would sneak over there after an extremely difficult day walk out on the beach(usually not a soul around) close my eyes and just "feel" the power there....within minutes i would realize that most things i allow/allowed to bother me were so insignificant i felt silly

and then of course anywhere i can sit and watch dolphins...we have a place called Sebastian Inlet, and i used to tell Jo that there were always dolphins there when i went--i think she thought i was lying bc it took almost a yr for her to actually see them..everytime i see dolphins i get chills,a silly grin on my face, and i cant move im in such awe

of course taking Jo to the beach ,just she and i, is also great..walking hand in hand or finding shells and rushing to show the other...or just standing there arms around her watching the ocean

guess im pretty lucky i have several slices of heaven right here on earth

In the Hills of West Virginia ~ I like to go to them whenever I get a chance.
I feel heaven in the forest -or-
By a creek in the evening when the peepers fill your ears with sound-or-
In a summer morning when all you hear are songbirds and the land waking up-or-
The smell of fall leaves , fallen from your very own maple trees-or-
The sound of a thunderstorm (only the ones from home they sound so much wilder & so much more real) -or-
The sound of rain on a tin roof -or-
Seeing the bees, butterflies, bugs of a WV summer.

The bottom line is Home is where the Heaven & Heart is, even though my parents are passed , and my family home is sold . I still yearn for that place , that time. That Heaven.

There's a beach in Bradenton Florida - clear sparkling water, white sands. Miles of pristine beauty.

It's right off the highway surrounded by trees and picnic tables so you can stop and picnic in the shade, or you can walk hand in hand on the beach looking for shells.

Another slice of heaven -

Spelunking - I've fallen in love with exploring caves. I spent some time in a couple of them this past summer - In Ohio and I'm thinking of taking the Wee One up to Virginia to see how she likes them. They are so cool and beautiful and just give me a sense of serenity when I am inside.

There are many places I can go to feel this. A golf course for one, Key West, any beach with clear ocean water. But mainly my own back yard. One of my favorite places. ;)

The ocean. I love the sound of it, the smell of it, the feeling I get when I am near it...it feeds my soul like few other things in this world can.

The mountains of upstate New York in autumn run a very close second.

My slice of heaven is Cave Hill mountain which has the highest vantage point over the city of Belfast, Northern Ireland. In addition to views over Belfast, it's possible to see the western coast of Scotland.

http://i926.photobucket.com/albums/ad103/ulyssesgq/ch1.jpg

http://i926.photobucket.com/albums/ad103/ulyssesgq/ch2.jpg

Much like the city it watches over, the mountain has a long and sometimes sad history including the scene of ancient Celtic battles and the site of a significant amount of trauma during World War Two.

Although the panoramic views of the city below and of Belfast Lough are beautiful, especially at dawn and dusk, there are more beautiful, more calming and more dramatic landscapes in the world. However, that's irrelevant to me. For me, this is the one that matters to me and I love how it towers over and protects my city. It's a part of my DNA.

There are many, but the most powerful is believing in myself, believing I am worthy of my dreams. If I can find heaven in me, then I can share it. The frosting on top is having a partner that listens to my dreams and encourages me. Sprinkle with kindness and care and it's a heavenly recipe indeed........

My little slice of heaven is a place called Fayette County Texas. Its about halfway between Houston and Austin and if you get off on the back roads you will see rolling countryside, small towns that havent changed in decades and in the spring miles and miles of bluebonnets and indian paintbrush. There are painted churches, old metal bridges and bucolic pastures interspersed with stands of trees. I used to ride my bike out there all the time and now just drive the roads in my truck, but I never get tired of going there to visit the cemeteries, photograph the farmhouses and just drink in the peace and quiet. It was mostly settled by German and Czech peoples and has a lot of that culture in the area.

The so called Nature Coast of Florida -- the central Gulf coast. The rivers and the gulf itself (salt marsh). i usually go twice a year. Been doing that for twenty years.

The Ark in Ann Arbor -- best music venue on the planet. Been there literally hundreds of times. i miss it. Nothing in the Bay Area can compare.

My bedroom which i do not have pics of -- and probably wouldn't post pics of --

It's got three skylights, a window, and french doors leading out onto the deck. Hardwood floors, two huge closets and books and books and books. And my cozy bed which usually has two lazy cats on it. It's my refuge. It's a shared rental. i am not bragging. Just lucky. i also have my own private bathroom. My bedroom door is on the other side of the bathroom, so i have complete privacy. It's heaven.

My slice of heaven...well depends on my mood...it can be as simple as the smell of rain on a rainy day to the sound of the ocean. Here are some of mine:

~ Some days its being out in the country on a dark night, laying down on a bed of grass, and getting lost in the endless number of stars. Its mesmorizing.

~ Other days it is being downtown and taking in all its beauty. Whether its a museum, old churches, or tall buildings.

~ One of my guiltiest would be a used bookstore. When I am on my own I could get lost for hours!

~ When I can, sitting on the sand at a beach at night time, feeling the cool breeze move through my hair, and listening to the waves crashing. *sigh*

~ Last driving in the country, looking at the rolling hills, and listening to some great music.

Where I live here in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore State Park. I have a path outside my door that leads to the beach, a park, a forest, and a lagoon with good fishing. When I go for a walk, the deer, raccoons, coyote, and birds say hello back to me, and don't hide, because I feed them all in my yard. This is my little slice of heaven.

I have always found my lil piece of heaven in the horse barn. When it is just me and the horses and no one else. Nothing more peaceful and calming then listening to them munch on hay. I also love a good trail ride alone on Dodger. He has always found a way to calm me.

Recently, I found a new heaven...walking on the beach, holding his hand, letting the surf cover our toes. This memory is where I go now when I am missing him bc so far it is my most favorite! He brings me peace with his love.

I no longer live close to the beach but still hit it as much as I can. I also enjoy the time to myself to reflect and to just be me. Sometimes I do put my headphones on and listen to my favorite music it is so much more amazing as I am walking and feeling the cool water come up at my feet. I grew up at the beach and miss it so much.
Now since I am not close to it I walk. I usually walk a track going around and around with my favorite tunes helps me to think things out and count to 10 before I blow up on something that really doesn't matter. It is a distraction from the world around me.

My slice of heaven has always been where I see the dolphins...in multiples! Fortunately, having been on many beaches along the East Coast, the VERY best for dolphins is my native SC! I see them in pods, usually...and always, always very close to where I am standing!!! Dolphins are my most favorite of all!

That's an interesting question you've asked there; I've often wondered that myself. I was an RN at a Christian based hospital and took elevators all over the place and nothing really stood out except this one particular elevator by patient registration. It smelled like rain. Honest to God's truth! I loved taking that elevator because it was so calming. I often wondered if that was a little hint of what heaven smelled like on earth.

My slice of Heaven is situated in the Ozark mountains. I have a timeshare there with a gorgeous view and if we go in the fall when trees are changing colors, whooeee it is intense! The relaxing nature of just being there without any demands of having to be at work or having any real responsibilities completely destresses me. Taking my morning coffee on the deck as I overlook the mountainside dotted with colorful trees, our private heated pool and jacuzzi, it's just breathtaking. I have a hard time leaving because I want to live there...or is it that I want to run away from life and just stay there? Oh, and each day at 4:00 the cookie ladies come by with fresh baked cookies! How neat is that? That right now is my slice of heaven...
