I'm opening this thread to anyone that likes fishing. Tell us about your favorite kind of fishing? Do you prefer lakes, rivers, streams, oceans or just good old fashioned ponds? What kind of rod and reel do you prefer to use? Would you rather fish from a boat or from the shore? These and other like questions can and should be posted here. I'm interested in learning about all kinds of fishing techniques. What works for you, what doesn't? Ok, I think ya'll get my drift.

I love it. I have a marlin and dolphin mounted and hanging on my wall that I caught off Ocean City, Maryland.
I would love to travel one day to Venezuala (sp?) for sailfish, or Hawaii for shark. The only problem I have is the rolling waves make me so sea sick. No matter what I take, I get sick - but I still go.
I always tell Rosie that I want to buy and live off a fishing boat in the Caribbean. Then I could fish and snorkel for fresh seafood everyday. What a life.

aaaaaawwww a thread right up my ally. I grew up fishing on the deep sea boats out in San Diego,on the pacific ocean.I at one time had a 16 foot Thunderbird cathedral hull open bow boat with bait tank and fish finder.I love ocean fishing more than lake or pond fishing. There is nothing like having a great fight on your line with 50-60 pound test when you hit up a tuna.I have a custom made rod with open face reel for ocean fishing. I also have a Shakespeare light weight spinning reel combo for lake and pond fishing. I have two tackle boxes, one for ocean fishing and one for fresh water fishing.I'm looking forward to fishing down in the gulf when i move down there. My Lady White Tigress actually took me to baytown and showed me around where i saw a couple of guys fishing with a net in knee deep water with all these fish they caught, and got me itching to go fishing LOL. I have fished here at the lake and caught and released in my pond on my property.I also like to feed them and ducks LOL. I watched a couple with their child catching blue crabs with a piece of chicken on a string and thought I would like to do that also. I have been land locked for so long i can't wait to get to the ocean. As far as bait goes, i mainly use shrimp when im lake fishing. On the ocean i use squid, shrimp, anchovies.Mainly in San Diego we used anchovies and squid.
Great thread...........Thanks

Timber,
You said it! A yellowfin tuna is awesome to reel in! It took me close to 3 hours to reel in a 45 pound tuna on a deep sea trip. It just kept diving. Up and down we fought. In the end, I won. It was good eating I was told. I don't eat fish, but I grill it and smoke it for others to eat.

where are you living at ? is it close to Houston or Galveston. Maybe we can have a fishing get together like a "Bash" LOL
I don't mind fishing off a ocean pier either like Ocean Beach in SD or in Port Arandis (sp)on the gulf.My Lady being fair skinned redhead has to stay out of the sun so maybe this might be a guy thing?

Andrew, I've never fished in any ocean, but would love to try it someday. Growing up in Chicago, the choices were limited to rivers or Lake Michigan. Never had to fight to long to bring a fish in. The longest fight I ever had was with a Walleye.

I grew up bring home Yellowtail and albacore home so my mom canned it for us.I eat a little bit of fish but mainly catch it and clean and fillet it for others. I do like Maui Maui marinated and grilled.
I went out on a 3 day fishing trip out of Ensenada and loved it .Being a Mexican fishing boat our cook, Captain and crew loved to show us the fish, even cooking our catch if we wanted.Talk about authentic food.I really loved growing up in San Diego with being able to drive and not have to worry about what they do now a days in baja with troops and drug dealers and their wars going on there.
Really shame. but back to the thread.sorry for the derail

I'm located in the hills of Arkansas.
Houston is about 6 hours from our homestead.
thats a long way to be towing a boat for some ocean fishing. Unless we just met up in Galveston and went out on a charter boat.

Yeah I hear ya, I just towed ours from Southern California to Arkansas a few months ago.
We so could do a meet up.
I'm in Stillwater and I think meeting in Arkansas for fishing would be great. No boat towing except to a fishing hole. I mean, I travel to Austin when I want to and can hang with my friends there. Someone there always manages to have a place to stay for most of us that ask early enough.

I cannot stand watching the fishing boats offshore netting. It really is just a sign of the times I guess. Every shoreman and fisherman are so very desperate for a catch that they are going farther and farther offshore to net in the Atlantic.
Some of the watermen that I have spoken to are so very supersticious. They think it is a sign of the end of time. That the fish are heading farther out to sea because of the continents falling into the sea. Their thinking - not mine.
Have any of you guys watched the movie "Perfect Storm"? It was back on tv last week.

Hey Wolfy!
We have almost 10,000 miles of rivers & streams, and over 600,000 acres of lakes! Many of them are in and around my (central AR) area, but it's also great that I can drive anywhere in the state is less than 3 hours! You'll find some of the best fishing, boating, and whitewater rafting here! :)
We should definitely plan a BF fishing/canoeing weekend! I'm sure Jack and G would love it too! :D

I don't like rainbow trout fishing as much as it requires sitting still ... lol

When the winter passes and the weather improves, we'll have to make a plan. I'm good for coming to Arkansas whenever.

Great thread! I was raised in Alaska so I mostly fished for Salmon. However, in the spring it was usually for grayling, rainbow trout, and Dolly Varden. Then came King Salmon season which is truly a blast and really can wear you out when you catch those big boys. My biggest King was 75lbs and it took about 1.5 hours to land him.
As a kid we spent countless hours in wading in the river fishing and the cold water never seem to bother us a bit. We mostly used our own cured salmon row as bait or dare devil lures. My father taught me how to make our own sinkers and lots of other little fishing tricks.
I now live in Minnesota. The land of 10,000 lakes and you would think I would fish more but I really dont. I think Ive fished maybe 5 times living here. I also think growing up salmon fishing can spoil you because there is nothing like the fight of a good size salmon on.
What I think I really would enjoy though is Deep sea fishing. That is definitely something I have on my "to do" list.

I grew up in Chicago and once a year, you could snag for Salmon in the Licoln Park Lagoon. If you had a big boat, you could go out on Lake Michigan and actually fish for them.
I lived one year in MN and probably fished with my friends there at least a dozen times. Northerns and Walleye are another massive fish and MN is full of them.

I don't have a problem with those little fishies - but worms? ew.
Mare and I did quite a bit of fishing this past summer, but didn't catch a thing. We made a killing with crabbing though.
I don't even eat fish with the exception of fish sticks and tuna, lol, but I find fishing itself very therapeutic. I just love being near the water. We are hoping to get a boat in the very near future and take our fishing trips to the next level.

I also think fishing is therapeutic. When I lived in Chicago, there used to be a place I'd go to a lot. It was a river where a man made dam was and I'd sit and fish for hours alone. No one to bother me, alone with my thoughts. Sometimes I'd go after a hard day of work just to wind down before I went home. River fishing can be fun because you never know what you'll catch.
As for the worms, I'd put them on a hook for you anytime, but I have a funny feeling Mare already does that.

Mare and I tried surf fishing when we were in Virginia. It's not easy and it's a bit of a pain in the ass. It's not quite the same as casting off of a pier. You are literally standing at the edge of a shoreline and casting out into the ocean. All I caught was a few shells and tons of seaweed.

I'm the lazy, patient fisherman. I cast out, leave it and pay close attention to my line. Catfish like to play with the hook, so you have to bait it well and tease them once your line starts to move. Every now and then, I get a surprise and pull in a bass. I usually use a #2 hook, so the fish has to open up wide to suck it and the worm in. The exciting part is the yank and knowing the fish is secure on that hook as it fights with all it's might to stay in the water. When we catch enough fish, we have a fish fry.

So what kind of reels does everyone like to fish with? I've never been able to master using a baitcaster reel (open face), although I own a nice one. Perhaps I need to practise, but I lose all patience when I'm on the water and I've got a bird's nest of fishing line hanging out of my reel. lol I mostly use spinning reels. The best reel I've got a Pleuger President. I got it on sale at Bassproshop for $50. I've got the smaller of the two models offered. It's the smoothest reel I've ever had!!!!
I like light/medium rods. I've tried medium and medium/heavy and they have their applications but mostly I don't need anything heavy unless I'm catfishing, but even then I usually use one of my good ultralight combo's.
Of all my setup's, I probally use my ultralights more than anything as I'm usually fishing for panfish. For bass and catfish I'll throw my Pleuger. For fishing line, I'm sold and have been sold on braided line since the first year spiderwire came out. I lost two big cats in one night on mono and the next day I tried the braided and that was all she wrote. I've never lost a fish due to my line breaking since!! I have lost a big cat due to my hook straightening out once grrrrrrrrrrr!!!! I've read tons of articles about flurocarbon lines and might consider using one as a leader, but that would only be in extremely clear water (such as Dale Hollow Lake).
I've spent thousands (not an exaggeration) of dollars on lures but my go-to, almost never fail lure is a white with a red tip or a green with a orange underbody - rooster tails. In fact, I bought so many lures I had to make myself stop - it was becoming an addiction and I wasn't using the lures. Or I'd spend the day tying on lure after lure, and not mastering a damned one of them! lol
I try to do one week long fishing trip every year (usually with my family). We've gone to many lakes but the best trips have always been to Ontario, Canada. That's a whole different fishing than fishing in the south. Different lures all together!! Although the tactics are pretty much the same - cast! cast! cast!!!!! We usally come home more tired than when we left - 14 hours of hard core fishing everyday the weather allows.
My favorite trip is Reelfoot Lake, TN. I've been there twice (stayed at Bluebank Resort and I highly recommend it!). The first trip was fairly unsuccessful, although I did catch a load of catfish on our last day!!!! The second trip we hired a guide. Again, totally differant fishing than what I'm used to. The guide had us use a small hook with a little jig head with a few fly-type feathers - in fact it looked like a fly on steroids lol. Then you put a cricket or a wax worm on the hook. And then we had to cast them right against the trees, let them fall, set a minute. If you didn't catch a fish in a few minutes, cast to the next. You never fished anyone place longer than 10 minutes. Our second trip was much much more successful and we had two coolers of fish to bring home!
Well, I've kept on long enough - good luck and tight lines for all!!

so i'm too intimidated by all the know-how in this thread to participate much but i had had a blast learning to flyfish this summer. i could do it for hours and i dont even care if i catch anything. (how stoopid is that?!) and this autumn, for the first time, i took the fish off the hook my own self too!

Hey Hippieflowergirl! Congrats on learning how to fly fish and taking the fish off of your hook! You really shouldn't be intimidated here. Even though I've read tons of books and mags on fishing and have bought tons of gear, there's nothing I love more than using my $12 zebco ultralight and a dozen nightcrawlers to catch bluegills all day long! We're all on the same playing field here, in the never ending search for the thrill of that tug on the end of our lines!!

zebco! i know that name! yaaaaay me!
all i could catch this autumn were sunfish (i called them "pancake fish" when i was little). it wasnt fly fishing but it was still lots of fun. i figured the pancake fish werent too intimidating (unlike the bass other people seemed to be able to catch) and i should be able to get one off the hook and leave others to their fun. so i just tried it and it worked okay!
i was also so pleased with myself when i did it the first time i just stood there grinning and forgot to throw the fish back in the water right away! (poor fish) fortunately no one was looking!!!

That is awesome Hippie!!!!! I don't really care how I'm fishing or what I'm using as long as I'm catching fish!!!
A few years ago my family and I went to Dale Hollow Lake in TN. It's a gorgeous lake with ultra clear water and alot of fishing pressure. My contention was that we needed to get a guide to help put us on the fish. But did we do it??? Noooooo! So while everyone was up at the cabin complaining cause we weren't catching any smallmouth bass (what the lake is reknowned for), my nephew and I were down at the marina catching tons and tons of bluegills!!!!
There are some folks out there that are purists - searching for one species of fish, or only fishing with one technique, but I don't really care as long as I am reeling something in!! At the end of the day it's really about having fun, that is always my fishing goal!!!

isnt that funny? i dont even care if i catch fish so much. for some reason i just like what i'm doing more than whether or not i catch anything. especially when casting. that's the part i love! i'm not saying i'm any good at it mind you. i dont think it's fair to call what i do "flyfishing" because i'm making some of it up as i go! but damn if i dont love it! dont get me wrong, i like catching something, but i just like fishing period. i've been going, on and off, since i was 10.
i never even considered learning to fly fish before last summer but a friend was really into it and i'm game when it comes to making a fool out of myself in good company. i'm perfectly happy to wade right out and give it a shot. it was funniest when i discovered that i was more willing to get wet than he was. we laughed about that for a long time.

Hi Hippie :)
I think that's what it's all about - having fun!!!! Casting is fun for you and catching is the bonus! For me, learning is a huge amount of the fun for me. Why are the fish HERE or THERE? What are they eating? How is the weather affecting them? Etc, etc, etc.
For me, there is great satisfaction in finding the SPOT aka the honey hole. One time in Canada we stopped at this pile of rocks in the middle of the lake. We all tied on our lures and I found the spot. After I had caught four fish everyone wanted my lure (an orange and yellow swirled curly tailed grub). Now we were all fishing with the same lure, same rocks, same spot. Perhaps it was my retrieval but I outfished everyone. Basically I put dinner on the table that night :) My family dubbed the rocks "Shark's Island" heh heh
Same trip, we were fishing a very small private lake after a cold front came thru the day before. The wind was steady and hard. My Dad and Uncle were in one boat, my bro and I in another and we weren't having any luck. I told my bro I wanted to fish this one point and we wore em out!!! Yeeee haw!!!!!!!!
One thing I thought was interesting was that my brother and I were using the same exact lure in size, even same company but he had a copper colored blade and mine was white with a red stripe. He caught twice as many fish as me!! It's amazing how color affects fish so much :)

You know me, I'm great to take along if you need sticks cleared out of the area you desire to fish! haha.. I bet you will miss fishing for fishsticks with me this summer!

I am actually a seasoned angler with uncles that worked on commercial fishing boats and my dad an great outdoorsman. Rasied in South Florida I've deep sea fished, speared fish and trapped them.
Then I moved up north. I was lost! It was whole new type of fishing, fishing in streams and lakes but I was determined to learn it.
yeah this is a fish story...
I get the book, I get the new tackle and bait for my fresh water stream adventure. I set up at a stream, after reading the books, where there was an old broken down bridge. I got my stringer, my buckets, my fisherman's friend and I'm off to catch a bass. I cast my line out into a over hung tree and right away I catch a nice blue gill. I was so proud and even mouth watered think about how good he'd taste back at camp. Yep, I had oil, batter and everything i needed for an awesome fish fry. I am THAT confident in my angler abilities.
So I string Mr Blue Gill up and let him flap in the water to stay fresh until I was ready to cut his head off and eat him. I'm noticing a red looking snake swimming in the water. I don't pay him any mind. I then hear this racket, sloshing.. I run to see what it was. That snake had my fish in his mouth trying to pull him away from the stringer but it was tied and he wasn't go anywhere! I took my pole and started beating him. Not that i would now eat this damn fish but i was so pissed off that I had to beat him. He wouldn't let go. His teeth sunk deep into the side and he pulled and pulled no matter how hard I hit him.
Still pissed off I pull out my leatherman's friend, flip open the knife, walk down to the edge of the water and cut his head off. His body swam away and his teeth still clenched onto the fish.
OMG I have fish stories trying to get that one perfect fish. I've catch trout when I didn't mean to, snagged huge lake trout in my boat while trying to break free from something. I wish I had a video camera to document my fishing bloopers.
But I love fishing. Even when I'm not catching anything. I love getting in my kayak and finding that perfect spot and the watching the water swirl and move, knowing that the big one is just waiting to bite my hook and beg me to eat him.

When I lived in MN for a year, I worked 2 jobs and never had much free time. My friends there had to coax me out to do fun things. Evry day on my way to work, I'd pass a lake and in the winter, I'd see houses built on them with vehicles beside them. All I could tell my friends was that I'd never go out there with my truck because I would hate to have lose it in the lake. Ice fishing can be fun, if you're with someone that's been doing it for years.
BTW, it's snowing right now, but the forecast says the Carolinas are going to get hit with it. Stay safe, stay warm and stay inside.

I think you should opt for a bucket on your head. Make it a plastic one and you can cut out eye and nose holes. That way you can still see what's going on without getting brain damage by taking it off to have a little peek.
Do you think one needs a license to fish, if they jump into your boat and you have no equipment with you that indicates you were trying to fish?

I need to do a little work on my boat trailer, but I'm ready for some southern style pan fishing for sure. I do bass fish some but would rather, fish for pan fish. Crappie, bream, catfish etc... Mostly I catch and release. I only keep what I am going to eat that night unless my buddies are planning a fish fry then as long as it is legal size I'll keep it. It won't be long before the sound of iron thunder can be heard on the river bank and we have a big ole cook out of some kind.:harley:

Blade, I like all kinds of pan fish for eating. Where I grew up they called pan fish sunnys. Any kind of pan fish is a sunny, lol. When I used to go camping, we'd keep enough fish for the nights dinner. Someone would always bring a cast iron skillet, oil and flour. Take a Lil Smokey Joe, light it up, put the skillet on top and fry. There's no fish for eating better than fresh out of the water the day you're going to eat them. Smelt season in Chicago is the same way. Net up down by the lake front and cook as many as you can right where you're sitting. Never take home more than you'll use in a couple days.

I usually fish when I camp cuz I usually camp where there is water. I will wrap the fish in tin foil in a basket and cook it or if I haven't brought all of my camping gear I'll just cook it on a stick over the campfire. Sunny's huh? I've never heard that, cool!

Good luck AtLast!!! I've always wanted to take a fly fishing class, just never had the chance to get around to it. I think if I were to give any advise it would be to try to match the hatch. I wouldn't worry so much about laying out the perfect cast but I'd try to put on the right fly. I think fish are concerned with their next meal, not perfect form!!!!
The days are warming and I'm starting to get the fever!!!! My boat needs some work so it looks like I'll be starting the season on the shore, but that's just fine with me!!! Just one bad thing, I've moved and I'm really going to miss my fishing buddy!!!! sigh Ahhh well, I'll have to call her when I'm reeling one in lol
I love fresh fish fried up and I've had it all my life. But the best tasting fish I've ever had was when I've had fish on our Canada fishing trips. The water is so clean up there (and we went wayyyyyy up there) that the fish just tasted better. I highly recommend that anyone who gets the chance should go!!!! I can't wait to go back! :)

Hi AtLast.. I fly fish. and love it. I took a class when I lived in the PNW. We would go to a local park every other weekend on a Saturday... fly fishing poles in hand.. and practice. It truly is an art. I am certainly not as good at it as I am with freshwater. However, it was fun to learn and quite peaceful.
I am so ready to go as well. Freshwater season opens April 1st here. I also catch and release. Our "fish to catch" is the rainbow trout. We have people that travel from Canada and across the US to fish here. I love that people camp up and down the creek and we also have food vendors set up along the long route as well.
Have Fun.

AtLastHome,
I am learning to fly fish. It is really hard to coordinate the casting part of it. I took a couple of lessons, but it is really relaxing to do once you get the knack of it down pat. My adopted sister gave me a gift for the last four Christmas' to a place in Farmington, PA called Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. There they have the Orvis flyfishing school. And that is where I took my lessons at. I only had 4 lessons, mind you. But I have found it to be really fun. I can understand why some folks actually spend hours casting in grass for hours trying to perfect their swing/cast as they say.

Do you know how hard it is to pull a turtles head from it's shell??? What's funny now is how we all got serious - like it was an operation. One person had the shell. I bought my kayaks when I lived in Florida. They are ocean kayaks with a hatch and covered area to take out overnight. I use to take them down in everglades national park, way back and you could camp on decks back in swamps. I like them because they are hard to tip and they are a lot of fun in the ocean.

I would love to get it together. Im almost done with this training and then start at my clinic. As far as I know we won't be working weekends. But i have to get a couple of months under my belt before i can even start thinking about paying for a day out on the boats. Im just trying to get my bills paid off plus what i owe WT.I pay her what i can and she keeps a tab for me. Doesn't make me feel good until i can pull my weight.
But I'm trying to get her to go to Texas City on the jetty, as long as she is covered up(she burns)

I'm not sure how flying fishing from a kayak would be since you need that full body action. In my kayak tho I can pretty much drop my line wherever I want it.
There was a resort not far from me that offers lessons but the whole course was really expensive. I think a nice group, a few coolers and tents then someone willing to teach us.

Im interested but need to plan. I was actually thinking of going up around the finger lakes, upstate NY, which isnt close but I have been wanting to fish there a long time. I use to live in the Adirondacks, in a village by lake george. There were amazing streams and plenty of trout but no one to show me. Now I did catch a big ass lake trout as long as my forearm but thats not the same.
In the southern tier of NY there are tons of waterfalls, streams, camping, you name it. To be honest if it was so cold so long I,d move backl to NYS in a heartbeat,

Sachita.. if you ever want to come this way and fish, just let Me know. This area is well known for it's rainbow trout and our season opens April 1st. I would really love that. My birthday is the first part of May. I would love to camp up that way and fish. Just send them to me in email and I'll plan. Need to make sure my critters are cared for. Maybe there are a few people up that way that want to get together for some fishing?
So you know how to fly fish? omg what an invitation!
But seriously, I so miss that area. It would be great to go up. As I was saying in chat, I went up last oct to finger lakes for the wine festivals but could only stay a few days. The water was just too damn cold. I love waltkins glen but I cant say NY has my favorite wines. The vineyards all along Seneca lake were amazing.

I will definately send you some information via email. Nods I do know how to fly fish.. I learned when I was out West as I was saying earlier. Took alot of practice to get it down.. but worth it for the peacefulness you get from it alone.. let alone if you catch any fish. *laughs*.

Hi everyone, glad to see I'm not the only fishing freak on the site, although I prefer salt to fresh water fishing (the stuff ppl throw in the canals and lakes here in Miami will probably end up giving us mutated, bubble gum chewing, cross eyed fish! lol) Anyhoo, last time I went fishing, I hooked a small cubera snapper, and as I was reeling him in, ho-hum, I looked down to see how much more I had to reel. The fish was about four feet away, when out of the deep came a snook bigger around than my thigh with it's mouth open and thinking "cubera hordevours" to itself, when it chomped on the little cubera. Ho-hum became YEEEEHAAAAA as the line stripped from my reel (lucky for me I had twenty five pound test line on there!). I fought that sucker for about fifteeen minutes, finally landed him, and when I got home and gutted the snook, there was the little cubera, half torn up, the hook that had hooked HIM was imbedded in the SNOOKS gut. Almost a twofer. lol I gave the cubera to my cat and ate the snook myself.
We've been having a real good run of Spanish Mackarel, Red Snapper and Spotted Sea Trout for these past few months. I missed all of last month because of surgery, but hope to be out and catching my limit again soon. Good luck to all you happy anglers out there! :)

Someone mentioned honing their casting skills. When the kiddies were coming along and started wanting to go fishing with me I'd buy them a rod and reel show them how to use it and put an old tire in the yard and tell them when you can hit the tire every time you cast THEN you can go fishing.
I have little patience for getting hung up in trees and brush. However I do have some funny fishing stories with the kiddies.
Anyway I guess what I'm saying is whoever was wanting to hone their casting skills should get a old tire and start casting casting casting.

Blade I think this is a great idea for anyone unsure of their casting skills.
I like you have little patience when someone gets hung up in anything and I have to stop what I'm doing to help. The easiest thing to do is cut the line, reset and don't bother the others your fishing with. You can always go back later and tug away, if you lost a good lure.

Good idea Blade! Also good practise if you use a baitcaster so as to avoid birdnesting while on the water and basic embarrassment in front of pals lol
I try not to get upset when myself or someone with me hangs up. Often the best spots to cast to are under that tree limb or next to that fall down. Fishing is the same as realestate - it's all about the location location location!
I bought some lure retrievers which are basically a piece of lead with a paperclip attached to it. You thread the paperclip around your line then just let the lead fall, the weight of the lead hit the lure, hopefully dislodging it. It saves tons of time and actually works!!! You can buy them at walmart.
One last tip, my favorite lures are rapalas. Go to www.rapala.com and they have video tips for their lures to best utilize them. I learned alot!!! The videos are about 15 minutes long and have no commercials cause, really, the whole video is a commercial. But the information is really good.
They also have a tshirt I HAVE to buy!! It shows a rapala lure and it say - take a fish boating! lmao!!!!!!! I think I'll put that as my sig line :)

OMG I have had to cut so many nice lures from getting hung up and I'm very good at casting. Sometimes the wind grabs it, the drag is loose or you just miss your swing. OR you snap something under water.
Does anyone have Ollies close? I was there the other day and picked up some nice lures. They also had nice rods and reels for 20 bucks. A lot of nice stuff cheap and if it gets caught or breaks you're not out a bunch of money.

yesterday as i was cleaning out my sister's garage, I discovered my dad's old fishing pole and his tackle box. She said I could have it. I plan on doing some fishing this year...and to have him with me? Wow...
just a little story about dad and fishing. He and my mom and my big sister and brother who were babies then, were on the blanket while my dad fishes. He said he was going to the car to get some beer. My mom didnt want him to but he gave her the pole and said for her to fish. She didnt have a license and tried it from that angle. He said no one would be around and she would be ok. So he goes to the car for beer. When he comes back, there is the guy giving my mother a ticket...for fishing without a license...
boy was my daddy in trouble for not just the beer!!!

Excellent... My cousin and I fish a lot together but I could seat 1-2 more people in the boat some time. Let me know. We fish the white river mostly for trout. We use lures called "little red river lures" and they work awesome. I just moved here last year, so I'm still getting to know the lakes.

Yes, you find someone kind enough to bait your hook, take the fish off and just let you relax.

2 touching the fish?
they make these fish grippers now - boga grips - that grasp the fish's lip so you do not have to touch the fish at all. In fact, fish have a protective slime so it's best if we touch the fish as little as possible. **unless you get stung by a catfish in which case if you rub the spot where you got stung on the catfish's belly, it'll take the sting out of it**
3 getting stuck with the hooky thingy?
They make hook removers that you grip the hook, twist and remove
4 a feller to help ya?
I'm sure you could fish without a feller to help ya, but wouldn't it be more fun with one????

Fresh fish is rarely ever fishy. I'm spoiled when it comes to fish. I think there is a world of difference between fresh and even flash frozen. It all depends on the type of fish. Rainbow trout is white, clean tasting and really yummy if cooked right. Lake trout on the other hand tends to be larger and more fishy. Salt water fish it varies. Most people like sea bass and grouper, white flesh, deep water.
You can also soak fillet fish in milk for a few hours to add fat and help remove fishy smell and taste.

After I moved back to Ga. from Ohio I never got to fish. While in Ohio if the weather was warm I was on the lake before the sun was up good and stayed there until WELL after dark. I only went home to shower, sleep, and change clothes. When I got back to Ga the places that I grew up fishing were impossible for me to get to with my wheelchair. So for years my rods and reels sat and every once in a while I would take them own and dust them off just to feel them in my hands and bring back those memories of walking to my favoriet spot when I was youinger and then fishing off Jackson St. Peir in Ohio. Recent events brought some friends back into my life who are very supportive and while they recocnize my limitations they push me to do more and step outside the safty zones I have grown comfortable with. For the first time in about 6 years I went fishing at a spot they had found that had a dock a few other spots that were accessable to me. From the first sound of my baited hook hitting the water.... I felt like I was home. I hadn't felt so relaxed in years and have been several more times since fighting the urge to go daily. Next is the desire to be back out on a boat. I'm goin' to rent one before I take on the responcibility of buying one. Hopefully this will happen before the camping trip I'm goin' on in July. I wonder if they will have fishing there.....LOL. Yep I've definatly got the FEVER!

Ethan, bet you didn't know I was a bona fide fisherwoman, complete with the chest waders? Trout fishing, high in the mountains here - some of the most serene moments in my life. I can understand missing that.
Wanted to share that a lot of the national and state parks - have public access that often includes docks, etc. Did a search online and found a link that might be of some help for you. Good luck!

Hiya Wolfy,
Well all of My gear is still in the car from the last outing with My niece. However, I have not been back yet. Sometimes Life intervenes. I am hoping to go soon.. perhaps with weekend.
How about you?

I haven't had a chance to go fishing yet. Thought I'd live vicariously through those that have. Just when I think I can go, it either rains (alright in Oklahoma it storms) or I'm 2 days mowing our football field of a yard or someone has me running errands. I think I need to get away for a weekend just so I can fish.

Fantastic post Ethan!! I'm glad you've got some friends to get you out there doing what you love to do!!!!!
Well, fishing thread pals, it's hot (high of 99 here for the next three days) (99 - in the shade!!!!!!) so this is the time I usually start doing night fishing mostly for catfish.
My question is do y'all have a magic, special or favorite bait to catch catfish with? I've used chicken livers (wrapped in pantyhose), hotdogs, corn, stink bait, shrimp and nightcrawlers. Does anyone have a special trick they'd like to share?
Thanks

It's time to go fishing, who's ready?
What kind of fishing do you like?
What reel and rod preference?
Do you do catch and release or bring your catch home?
Me, I was ready last year and can't wait :)
I like to lake fish, but really like river fishing with all it's challenges where snagging is a great possibility when the water is like a racing rapid.
I have several rods and have closed faced reels on all of them.
I'm the lazy fisherman, who wants to toss out my line and wait until I feel a nibble.
The challenge is getting them before they take the live bait.
I get quiet and pay close attention to my line in the water.
River fishing is different, you have to try different ways until you find one that works on that given day. Calm water day, you may just toss out your line and wait. Rushing rapids day, you'll want to be reeling in before the rapids take you farther than you want to be.
I'll be the one bringing home my catch to clean and either eat or put in the freezer for an end of the summer fish fry.

well fishing in Canada is a bit different but.....
i love bass fishing
i caught all of them in the pond in Massachusetts, at the lake in Oregon including a 2 pounder right before i left, and will catch all of the bass in Canada as soon as i can :eyebat:
i like a chartruse 2 oz jig head with a white/chartruse skirt
i love topwater buzz baits the best, but the weather has to be just right for that
also love purple worms with the white tail, bass love em
Nightcrawlers are fun but i rather skip that if i can
i also LOVE flyrod fishing
i fish for anything i won't eat, or pass on. i used to pay for my canoe rental space at the lake to million year old Gus who loved that deal.
Now i catch all the bass i can for my sister who seems to LOVE fish suddenly :|

I like fishing with nightcrawlers, it's what I was raised up fishing with
I find when fishing for perch in Lake Michigan by Navy Pier, you must use crawdads because they won't bite on anything else
I miss fishing during smelt season in IL and pan frying them as you bring in your catch
This is all net fishing and no poles at all
I don't know enough about artificial bait to know what kind of fish prefers what
If it works for me, I use it, if not I try something else
I used to have a frog that would go through weeds and I lent it out, mistake :(
The line on my reels are bright green so I can see them because I am a line watcher when lake fishing

I prefer lake fishing with a bobber and worm. But since we live on the ocean now I'm going to have to try this. Frankly ocean fishing scares me. I've been planning on trying the bay as it seems easier and the water is calmer, almost flat. Can I use a bobber in a bay?

Melissa, I think you can use your bobber anywhere you choose to fish. Being able to see it and keep track of it in some waters is another thing. I personal like bottom fishing, but if I do use a bobber, it will be a slip bobber. I think they are a better choice than the clip on kind. When I bottom fish, I am always watching my line and usually have a finger on it near my reel, so I can feel it anything may hit on my bait. I almost always use worms, but will go to artificial every now and then.

Walleye put up such a good fight, almost as good a fight as carp. Walleye is meaty and great smoked, but also good fried. I have never caught a Gar but saw one floating once in the Mississippi River when I was fishing off a grain barge years ago. I fished the Smokey Mtns once and had a stringer of trout, but got the crap scared out of me when I pulled up the stringer to move and saw the weirdest ugliest thing sucking on the last trout on the stringer. My friends in TN called it a mudpuppy. I was getting up so quickly, I slipped on a couple rocks and wound up in the cold stream. Everyone laughed, but me. Like you, I don't care where I fish as long as I can when I want to. I used to go sit at a spot by the DesPlaines River in IL. It had a little dam and I could fish it above or below. At the time nothing worth eating came from there, but the calmness that came over me as I sat and waited for a bite was wonderful. It made a stressful work day better. No one to talk back to me by the river except nature.

I will fish anywhere, anytime and if I can't get them on a pole I'll even go in after them with a snorkel! I have a few kayaks and prefer them for fishing over my canoe. I can really get into tight places, under over-hanging trees and I love just being out on the lake. My kayaks are ocean kayaks and great in surf as well.
I hope I have time this year. I want to open produce stands and hopefully can steal a few hours a week to drop a line.

Haahaa! I debated whether I even wanted to post in here. Y'all are going to think I have plumb lost my mind!! *Chuckles I have no idea the terms or the different types of fishing. I was taught one way by my father who is now 92 years old. I have never cast a line with a casting rod. His are all vintage rods with open wound reels. He always used the same type of hooks (nothing fake) and of course always worms. The catch? Small stream native trout. I am not referring to stocked trout. I am talking lands that are private that have native fish in them and reproduce each year. The bait? Worms that I get from overturning rocks and other objects since we always lived in the woods. Most of them were big ones too. Are they night crawlers? *Shrug Idk, but they are good bait. *Chuckles. My father and I would walk lightly by the stream and stand back far enough so the shadows did not cast onto the water and our step light enough to not cause vibrations. We would pull the hook taut and then let it fly into the water and stay very still and very quiet. Let me tell you learning that technique put quite a few hooks through my fingers. I swear my father had so much patience to put up with my slow learning. LOL! Anyways, we let the waters natural flow take the worm where it would go and then lightly pull it back under the edges near the side of the stream. The fish like to hide in those nooks and crannies of the water and they get tempted by the bait. Some days have always been better than others, but the fish that are caught are definitely hit over the head with a rock. I cannot stand to see them suffer and then they are cleaned as soon as we get home. They are either used immediately or froze. Mom used to always prepare them coated with flour and slowly fried. I honestly don't know what the largest trout was that we ever caught, but I do know state law was that if it weren't 6 inches it had to be released and that is the rule we went by. So....with that said...it has been quite a few years since I have fished. I did a few years back buy another more recent rod and tried it out once. I even bought some of those other fancy things that said they would work. I even heard that sweet corn in the can works as good bait. Ya know what I found? The ways dad taught me were best. They didn't want corn. They wanted worms. The fish didn't even want that stuff the guy at Wal-Mart recommended. So I gave up the rod and stuff in the tackle box I tried to expand with and have returned to the old methods that apparently were tried and true. My father has a lifetime license, but I doubt he will go with me to the stream anymore. But I will be honest I am bitin' at the bit to go out and catch him some fish and bring them home to him.

I agree with wolfy here . You can use a bobber anywhere but the water needs to be some tame . They do make large ocean bobbers . Like wolfy said I keep my finger feeling the line .

I prefer worms to artificial as have rarely caught anything with artificial bait. They use shrimp here in the ocean and bay so I will give that a try.
Well artificial bait is tricky. Depends on what type of fish you want what time of year and what time of day it is. Grasshoppers are good bait. I love vienna sausages too, not sure why but I have a lot of luck with those. Croppy and catfish love them. Maybe the smell who knows.

Jagg .. grasshopers is a great bait.... used them before too.
i have 2 new lures i been dieing to try... but hadnt had the chance yet.
had to giggle at RNurse's comment on the chicken blood.. lol .. is kinda gross huh?? them catfish like them gross baits .. and the stinker the better.
i love catfish... hate to clean them.... i bass fish more, and im more of a catch and release kinda girl :)

I got this idea from feeding some turtles in a pond one day on a picnic with my niece. So good luck with it. I usually cut the little sausages length wise once then in half once so I have 4 equal peices and put them on a hook, I do use a bobber like wolfy does and a few weights to sink my line , because catfish like to hide low so the farther down in the water the better off you are. Kind of stick close to the shore line too .

I used to have trouble with artificial bait too, until I went fishing with some buddies at work who are serious fisherman, they taught me alot.

I'm a Femme who loves to fish.
Jack and I are actually going on a camping/fishing trip next weekend! We fish off of our bass boat and are going to a lake that is rich with white bass, stripers, walleye, brown trout, crappie, and catfish. Yes, there is a little bit of everything on this lake because of its size!
Very excited! I have my own poles and we kinda troll back and forth in the channels that my family has been fishing for as long as I can remember and we always seem to have great luck.
Last year, something hit one of our poles so hard that it snapped 27-pound lead core. That is a BIG ASS FISH.
Needless to say, going to look for Big Bertha next weekend!

i was reading Field and Stream at Jiffy Lube today and read that muskie eat ducklings. There are these little duckling lures that people buy to catch muskie. God. i suppose there are many more ducklings than large muskie, but honestly i am not too happy with the Muskellunges.
DUCKLINGS??? Nature is too gross sometimes.
Fished for many years, but only with my dad. I never learned much and still can't clean a fish. I did it just to be outside and hang out with my dad. It's sad that he is too old to go out now. i miss it.

Can I just tell you how darn jealous I am of the two of you.
I wish you the best of luck catching Big Bertha, though.

I'm guessing there are other fish with teeth that do the same thing.
We catch fish and bring them home, so Muskie catch there dinner and eat it right away.
It's part of nature taking care of nature. Like humans, we hunt (ok, some of us don't).

I so enjoy fishing, I was born and raised in Florida so I have fished in Oceans as well as Lakes. My very favorite place to fish is right in my own back yard. I can remember getting up earling as a kid going out there fishing and having my mom yelling out the door to get my but inside and cleaned up for school. I have caught everything in that lake from brim, catfish, bass, cottenmouth snakes to Gators. It was a time to sit and think and just relax. I don't get to do it as much now but I am always ready to get up and head out. *smiles :)

Good Morning.
Anyone interested in a camping/fishing trip in the Heber Springs area in September and/or October?
I love that area and have been there lots, but my girl has never been.
We fish all over TN, but want to get away for a long weekend in Arkansas.
We like to fish from our kayaks and have an extra one if anyone is interested...

Hey mbd,
I have actually picked up fishing again since moving down here to Florida. I see a ton of people fishing from kayaks. I plan on getting one sometime in the near future.
Sounds like a good time @ long weekend in Arkansas.

I caught me my very own walter too...but, he was a giant catfish...
had to get him at night with a lit up bobber and a doughball at the

He was huge and snorted...huge

One of my favorite fishing shows is The Angling Edge with the Lindners. I always learn a lot from each episode. If you're interested check their website out. Put your pointer over Angling Edge near the top and then click watch episodes from the drop down list. (they're full episodes, last two years of their show)

I am SO wanting to learn to fly fish before I die....there is something truly elegant about it...and the peace of standing thigh high in the water...feeling nature all around me....it's just a perfect match for me.... :)

DUDE...now that is a bass!

An Alabama resident has reeled in a 70-pound striped bass that shattered a 34-year-old state record and could land the angler in the book of world records for the heaviest striper ever caught in a landlocked fishery.
James R. Bramlet, 65, reeled in the behemoth on the Black Warrior River (http://blackwarriorriver.org/river.html) on Feb. 28. The catch, weighed on a certified scale, exceeds the previous record, set in 1959, by 15 pounds. (Bramlet and his catch are pictured at right.)
"It's definitely uncommon," Heath Haley, a biologist for Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (http://www.outdooralabama.com/fishing/freshwater/), told Field & Stream (http://www.fieldandstream.com/articles/fishing/2013/03/world-record-striped-bass?cmpid=enews030613&spPodID=020&spMailingID=5243241&spUserID=MTMxMDk2MTg0MjMS1&spJobID=313315077&spReportId=MzEzMzE1MDc3S0). "This fish certainly, in my opinion, was an anomaly. It's a very fat, chunky fish.
"The previous record being 55 pounds, the fact that it hasn't been broken since the 1950s, it's just incredible that not only he broke it, but he shattered it. You just don't see them that big that often."
The striper measured 45.5 inches long and boasted a girth of 37.75.
According to Joe Songer of AL.com (http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2013/03/dora_man_catches_record_stripe.html), the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (http://www.outdooralabama.com/) has already approved the catch as a state record. If approved by the International Game Fish Association (http://igfa.org/) it'll become a new world record (this process can take weeks or months).
The current IGFA record for landlocked stripers is a 67-pound, 8-ounce specimen landed in 1992 in Los Banos, California.
Bramlet credits his wife, Janice, for urging him to go fishing on Feb. 28. She was scheduled to undergo a hospital procedure in a few days and would need him to be around and take care of her.
Bramlet told Songer that the fish rolled on the surface, showing itself, so he tossed a bait and soon hooked up. The battle lasted 20 minutes and as soon as Bramlet could secure the catch, he telephoned his wife to share the news about the memorable catch--and, presumably, to thank her for persuading him to go fishing.

The boss said "take the rest of the day off", and I said, "I'm going fishing!"
I had an excellent day fishing today at Henry Hagg Lake, in Forest Grove Oregon. It was a cold day, breezy at times, and poured down rain more than once during the several hours I spent today. I didn't mind any of the weather, but the rain was a bit of a pain, because I couldn't read my Kindle during the downpours (as if I have any right to bitch, when I've spent a paid day off fishing)...
I caught 7 trout, I took 5 home, and threw two back to the Goddess of the lake. ;)
I posted a photo of the day's catch in the gallery here (http://www.butchfemmeplanet.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=12510&nocache=1)...I was pretty amazed that each fish I caught today, was bigger than the one before it. It was weird!
Personally, I've never caught a rainbow trout as big as the last two fish that I caught today. I'm also really proud of myself, this was my first solo fishing trip. I've always shied away from it, because despite the fact that among my friends, I have always been the one who dispatches and cleans the fish, I didn't think that I could do all of the jobs by myself. I've always had some one grab the fish as it comes out of the water, they hold it while I either cut the line or pull out the hook, and then they hold the fish while I dispatch it and gut it. So, I was really nervous, but it was actually quite simple, quicker, and less messy.
It really has been an amazing day for me. I feel really great about my trip, and now I feel even more competent at fishing.

And oooohhhhh so jealous of Hollylane catchin trout! And that is a kickass story too!

omg! Fishing is so fun!
I just cant touch the worm...
or put it on the hook...
or take the fish off the hook
or touch them really (ew)...
I just run down the dock with the pole in hand screaming excitedly "I got one! I got one!" dragging the fish along...
*circus*

I was told, by a local, that I caught myself a river slam.
Not a grand slam though.
The species i caught on that river in a few hours were: smallmouth bass, redhorse (Cherokee fish), sculpin, hornyhead and a rainbow trout. I think that was all of them. hard to believe that river has so many species of fish in it.
To get a grand slam, I would have had to catch a brown and brook trout, along with the rainbow.
Today is a good day to fish! It is overcast and cool
