Hello everyone! Thought I would start a thread for working out, exercise, nutrition, etc. If you talk to me for more than 5 minutes you will know I am a cycling crackhead and I love to do triathlons and long distance bike rides! Everyone come on in and tell us what you enjoy doing to stay in shape, what you would like to do to get in shape, and just hang out and shoot the breeze!! Shad

Hey, thanks papa...

fortunately, muscles have a memory as you know. I'll start seeing some gains in 4-5 weeks I expect. And yes, circuit training will kick your ass. lol

So this whole weekend was dedicated to mountain biking. I went up to my bro SnackTime's neck of the woods yesterday and we rode some of the trail system there that neither of us have been on before! It was a HOOT!!! We had a blast and I found one rock shelf dropoff that I didn't try,but it has me intrigued and I will try it the next time. Today I stayed close to home and rode a 10.2 mile trail we have at the state park here; narrow, leafy, twisty, hilly singletrack with several big bombing downhills followed by gut busting climbs. I managed to ride the entire trail and only crashed 5 times and bled twice!:D Ohhhhhh...and I lost my front brakes at the last two miles so that was a challenge! Happy weekend everyone...trudging off to do homework now!! GRRRRR! Shad

GREAT thread Shad!

Yes, last weekend was fun!!! At least no trees were injured in our riding adventure on Saturday:D I took Sunday off because of being exhausted. I rode the mountain bike 4 out 6 days and got the road bike out once last week (the road bike was getting jealous)(LOL) I have not been to the gym since I have discovered my addiction to mountain biking. The weather has been so nice, I have been trying to get out and ride every chance I get.

I am heavy. However, after loosing weight, after 2 heart attacks I have slowed down drastically. I walk. Some days I have the energy to do so, and some I don't. I think life is very different as you age. Exercise is so very important. I used to be an exercise hound when I was younger. I was always out and about.

I so need to rediscover my love for long distance cycling. I do miss it (I dunno why but cycling in the US doesn't appeal to me as much as it did in Canada -- too many people?) Anyways, I'm trying to get back into some shape other than round. I got one of those IronGyms (fits into the doorway) so that I can try to do pullups even while lecturing or what-have-you. Also started running up and down the stairs (with a weird schedule like mine it can be tricky).

I think I'll have to look for a cycling/workout buddy in L.A. when we move their next year.

I have a PowerTec Home Gym, which is commercial gym quality. I bought their leverage system and squat machine. The best investment I ever made. Then i have a 300-pound Olympic barbell set and dial-up dumbells. I'm able to do about 90 exercises in my living room which includes all the main compound exercises and then the versions of them.

Howdy fellow work outersss :)

I love to be physical and I try to run at least 2-3 times a week. Now that it is getting cooler I am hoping to find my stride once again. For motivation a friend and I registered for the Grandma's Marathon in Minnesota, June 2010.

Otherwise, I am a Vinyasa Yoga enthusiast and I also love to hike, explore, mountain bike, play sports (shut it, JAGG) and do anything that involves water.

Basically...being physical = very happy Nove :D

Last year, I ran as part of my cardio. Now, my knees are weak and shot....at least it feels that way. But since I've started slowing on leg exercises, I'm able to strengthen my knees again.

Why does Jagg need to "shut it" about sports??Monday was a long swim workout,3400 yds, then my mama's workout of cutting, trimming and dragging away small trees in her yard.:). Yesterday I did my circuit workout at the school gym and today was a short swim workout, because I realized I haven't had a day off from working out in almost two weeks:eek:. And linus, anytime you get down around Tennessee, bring your bike,we'll ride! Have a good one y'all. Shad

I discovered my passion for cycling last year while trying to rehab a knee. It was easier to ride a bike than it was to walk, because of not having a lot of cartilage left in that knee. I have come along rather slowly, but I am getting there. I can tell that I am stronger than I was at the beginning of spring, so that does feel good! I can thank Shad for helping me discover my passion for cycling (road and mountain).

As Shad said, if you ever make it this way be sure to bring your bike...LOL

Today was another beautiful day here in Tennessee! I went out for another ride on the trails this afternoon. I ended up riding five miles, it was a great ride (taking more chances on the downhill parts).

I will probably hit the gym Monday since we are expecting rain. :(

Good Evening Shad,

Thank you for starting this thread! I love to Power walk, even though I have a gym membership, I prefer to walk outside. Especially now that the weather is starting to cool down here in Florida. What I like to eat is for breakfast, vanilla yogurt with organic granola, pecans and cranberries with chocolate SoyMilk. For a snack, I usually have a Odwalla bar<Banana Nut> and I drink plenty of water. For lunch, I have a fresh salad or sandwich with just mustard. For dinner I normally have chicken with brown rice and plenty of veggies. I do eat my chocolate<dark 85% or higher> and vanilla ice cream as a treat. As a result of everything, I lost 60lbs two years ago and I feel a lot better!

Have a good night,

Zimmy

Good Evening Shad,

I lost 60lbs two years ago and I feel a lot better!

That's very impressive. I eat six times a day and no starch after 3 PM. I do eat one starch per each meal prior in small portions. (We'll see how this turns out.)

I have a 6-day exercise regimen that includes alternating between abs and walking.

That is a great story about your fitness journey so far Zimmy! Kudos to you and yah, changing things up by taking up cycling will probably kick your weight loss goals into a higher gear. Our bodies are so smart and adapt so quickly, that if we don't mix it up,the gains or losses become smaller and smaller. My eating habits have been totally derailed and all over the map this last month. That being said,I want to be 10 lbs lighter by the start of spring so I will straighten all that out shortly:) Jet,let me know how the no starches in the evening works out for you,ok? Today was my circuit training day,and my best friend called right before I was going into the last round. We have been playing a serious game of phone tag,so I thought it more important to catch up with her and let the last circuit slide. Tomorrow is swim day,and since I am declaring Saturday,"do absolutely nothing day", I may squeeze in a little bike ride as well. Y'all have a great evening!!! Shad

I have a history of working out and then abandoning my program, whether it was successful or not. Being an 'all or nothing' kind of person, if I didn't give my all, it was easy for me to justify giving it up.

I'm a little older now and presumably wiser and realize that every step in the right direction counts and to try not to be so hard on myself. I'm in a bit of a lax period now but know that I will pick my program back up in short time.

My highest weight was 180. On a 5'1 1/2" frame, that is a lot to drag around. Many factors contributed to me reaching that weight but it basically boiled down to me not being happy. Now, I am happy with my life. So, when I gain 5-10 pounds due to changes in medicine or food intake or lifestyle changes, I am less critical of myself.

Now, I'm about 143, give or take. I'd like to eventually make my way back down to 125-128 but won't throw a hissy fit if it doesn't happen. 135 felt pretty good, so I'd be happy with that if I plateaued there again.

For me, it's more about the mental process than the physical one. But there are some days, after I've gone 5-6 miles on the elliptical, that I feel absolutely invincible and I love that feeling. :)

So today was an ummm....3000 yd swim workout? I lose count sometimes! My coach threw in 5 400 yd repeats with 15 seconds rest between each, I managed to hold a time of 8 minutes 45 sec. for each repeat. Not bad for a rock with arms and legs!:p I was gonna try to sneak in a mountain bike ride, but I promised my mama I would remove the starter from her riding mower and take it in for rebuilding,so I did that instead. I am debating taking tomorrow off and studying all day or going to the pool early, then to the bike trails and then study??? Hmm....it's gonna be GORGEOUS weather....Hope everyone is having a great day and has a great weekend! Shad

I usually have one marathon and a couple of half-marathons on my summer and fall schedule every year so that keeps my running schedule pretty full from May through Oct. I usually run 3-4 days a week consisting of one long and slow run anywhere from 8-20 miles at a pace of about a minute slower than my goal race pace; one medium distance tempo run 6-8 miles at or slightly faster than race pace; one speed run 3-6 miles of mile or half mile repeats at 5k pace of faster. I try to throw in 2 days of cross-training and strength training in there as well.

Off season workouts tend to be gym focused due to the cold Chicago winters -indoor cycling - spin classes, treadmill runs, cybex machine and weight lifting. The hardest part of the winter season is just getting to the gym...navigating through all of the ice and snow, finding parking and peeling off the layers of coats, gloves, boots and hats. If you can find a locker or a hook for all of your gear you know it is going to be a good day!

Welcome to the thread Squeeze! That is some serious running there! and yah, sometimes the hardest part of any workout is just STARTING the dang thang. And ooooohhweee to Chicago winters! Never lived there but I used to drive trucks and aint nothing like fighting frozen steel tarp in the wind off of Lake Michigan! I just started back running after a little setback from a hamstring pull. I had my first half marathon planned for this month, but no dice! Running is my least favorite part of triathlon, but I WILL make it my friend! Novelafemme is training for her first full marathon in the spring of 2010,I believe?Anyhow, welcome and good luck with finding a sweet parking place at the gym! Shad

I think I have a half-ironman in me. The swim is the toughest part of tri-training for me. I just can't focus for that long in the pool/open water. I become a time checker and find myself watching the clock and counting down the time until I am done. I need to re-engineer my brain for swim training and make the commitment to getting it done.

I could sure use it too.

Well. I finally got the nerve after discovering that I don't *mind* pool swimming as much as I thought I would to visit my local pool. Prior to that I'd been swimming in lakes.

A brief history. I started T in 2003 making navigation around gender binary change areas in fitness club/rec centres an 'issue'. Since I was already self conscious about my size, I took to the trails and swam in a lake 20 minutes from home. when I moved to the west coast in 2006, I found another lake 7 minutes away but didn't want to deal with men's changing areas.

I've been told that yes some pools the men's area has like ZERO privacy. Forget that.

Anyway, long story short, buddy of mine did some research and happy to say that almost all pools in my area have 'family' change areas, including my local pool which is less than 5 minutes away. I no longer have any excuses to not do my favorite workout in the winter. Nothing is going to stop me now. :D

Right now I'm not bothering with stats. I'm just showing up to do a solid 1-2 hours of swimming (non-stop) 5 times a week. That's the goal. Between 2002-2005 (although 2004 was the main year), I lost a total of 125 lbs, and keep off most of it (100-110lbs) over the last 4 years. That's an achievement in of itself but I got a lot more to go as I'm still over the 350lb mark.

Today my routine consisted of 2 breast stroke, 2 front crawl, alternating between the two. I also want to work on more upper body so today when I swam front crawl I did so with no kicking (love doing that... I really feel the burn in my shoulders).

I gotta long way to go but the journey is all part of it.

Good luck to rest of you and your routines. Glad to be here to help motivate each other!! (woot!)

Hey there PC! Welcome to the thread! Sounds like you got a plan for the winter time months. I have upped my swimming to 4 times a week; 3 coached workouts and one on Saturday morning where I just zone out and SWIM till I get tired. I tried going for a mountain bike ride yesterday, but after careening off a tree and sliding down a 10 ft embankment in the first mile,I realized my heart and head weren't in it so I came home.I also took today off,as it has been 3 weeks since a full day off of working out for me. Climbed back on the clean eating wagon this morning, because when I eat crap,I feel like crap! Tomorrow is circuit training day at the gym(this is the last week of this routine and I'm happy to see it go!) I will be designing another 3 week routine that will be more about developing strength with a 20 minute treadmill run before and after. Tomorrow is also my day off work,so if the weather continues to be gorgeous, I am going for a road bike ride! Happy Monday everyone! Shad

Chris, I am glad you found something you enjoy! It does sound like you have a great plan in place! Keep up the great work!

A few years ago, I got back into swimming after having shoulder surgery. In the beginning, I used fins and a kickboard and just kicked anywhere from 1000-1500 yards 3 times a week. I would also do some arm exercises while in the pool.

well I just found this thread because I acutally just started looking for it.

Christie: I am so proud of you

Shad: friend I miss swimming I used to do a mile everyother day

so tomorrow I start my training for my first 5K. Does anyone have any great techniques and or helpful hints on running and how to get the most out of it? I am new to this sport and since I can not swim right now (no pool) or bike (killed it and almost me on the railroad tracks), the gym is what I've got... so I am on my journey to a better healthier me...

Smiles :frog:

PS: I just read the entire thread... since there are runners out there.. I wanna play too, I just need help and a bit of extra motivation... maybe if i do not focus on weight loss and focus on the athletic goal it will be better? any suggestions?

well since this thread seems so quiet... WAKE UP PEOPLE.... okay just kidding ...

Today was day #3 of my training... it went really well...I pushed.. well pushed is not the word I let my body do the talking and I ended up doing 5 intervals of 2 minutes jogs a piece.

Thank you Shadows papa for the advice on breathing. My body just adapts to it when I stop thinking about it... and after I realized I was holding my breath... I started fosusing on the wall and zoning out it really just took hold. I can not wait until tomorrow at the gym... maybe I will add some weights (but not for the legs they are ouchie enough)..

Looks back in since my workouts have gone to hell in the proverbial handbasket with the demands of finals coming up. Kat! Kudos to you for taking that first step!I would say just focus on the process and eat better, and don't obsess on the weight loss,it will come.Being healthy and feeling good about yourself is the main thing! I am doing a 10k this weekend at the state park here. I am not looking to set the woods on fire, just a nice slow easy pace to let my healing hamstring get back into it.There are lots of runners here with more experience and better technique than me,hopefully they will come on in and share their knowledge! Now,back into the handbasket I go!! Shad

Good Afternoon Shad,

Thank you! Now that it is cooler here, I can do more exercising. Trying to exercise in 100 degree heat is horrible and I don't like going out at after dark gets hard to find time to do it. Jet, I am going to take your tip and see if that works for me.

How is the cycling going?

Have a good Saturday,

Zimmy

I find it harder during the holidays to not eat sweets. I usually just eat what I can and if I want some sweets, I eat a little bit of it. Shad

Hello everyone! Zimmy the cycling has consisted of mainly playing in the woods on my mountain bike. Today I did my first 10k race since injuring my hamstring in October. I felt great, and because I was running with a trainer partner who needed encouragement,I stayed with him and didn't try to set the woods on fire with my non-blazing speed! Took it nice and easy and finished in 1:14:24 without ever breathing hard! It made me forget about the pressures of school for a while and I had the opportunity to catch up with lots of folks from the running, cycling, triathlon community here I haven't seen in ages!So it was a great day to be alive and healthy and playing outdoors! Happy Weekend everybody! Shad

Have a good night and rest your hamstring,

Hey everyone,

Well due to major cash flow issues, I had a 'forced' walk today of 1 mile back from going to town to deliver my car plates to my insurance agency. :( I'm going to miss driving my little corolla even if it's for a couple of weeks or less.

I know that my knees may be 'shot' but until they hurt like an SOB, I'll walk when I have to.

Swimming has been put on the back burner due to money issues and now car issues. But the forced walk home, while painful was probably something I should continue to do.

Meanwhile, I've been diagnosed with moderate sleep apnea and my doctor is seeing me on the 17th to follow up regarding my blood pressure. there's evidence to suggest that as soon as I'm able to adjust to a CPAP machine to help with my sleep apnea, I'll be able to have see results in lower blood sugars, and lower blood pressure, and hopefully I'll feel more rested too!

I hate all this 2 steps forward/1 step back thing but that's how it goes I guess.

Shadows thanks to trying to keep this thread going. I need it/and want it. I could use this kind of support as I spend a lot of my time alone. Now that I'm working almost more than full time and my brain is being exercised, more and more I need to balance it out with the physical. I know this I'm committed to it.

-Cheers

Good Evening PapaC,

I know about the issue with losing your car. I lost my car for nearly a year when it decided to stop running in the middle of an intersection on New Year's Eve. But the cop pushing me home with his car made up for it, he saw that I was upset and started telling me jokes on his loud speaker to make me laugh, which it did and had the whole neighborhood looking at us funny; they saw him pushing my Ford Escort with his blue lights on. I can never thank that officer enough for making me smile that night.

Hope everything gets better with you and soon!

Have a good night,

Zimmy

Hey there PC! Yanno dude, fate is a funny thing and while losing your car is a major inconvenience,it might be a chance to further getting more fit, because you have to walk now. Hopefully your knees will hold up and if you can, walk on the softest surface available!I think we are all feeling the belt tightening of a "recovering economy" we just hafta be more creative, right? I'm glad you are getting some inspiration from this thread,it is my honor to keep it going, and besides,I'm a motormouth when it comes to any kind of working out talk! I am really proud of you Shad.

Last night was the last night of week #1 training.. and I did the intervals and hit my first 3 miles in less than and hour with 12 min of jogging. That is a huge step for me. Thanks for the encouragement. I have a good team thus far. They see I am going to the gym and they want to come too, and if it is just me I make myself go and even a 30 min work out is better than nothing.

Today starts week #2 Walk 5min jog 2min.. (hehe I am almost there already)... but I will take it as it is... I am really enjoying not working out to lose weight. It is so much more refreshing trying to beat my fastest time.
1.5 miles in 27:30 wooot... considering it took 30 min last tuesday.

Week 2 Day 2
today's work out sucked... I wanted to take a day off :alarm:but got a text message from a buddy saying that he would be there in 20 min... well that was my sign to get off my toosh and get to the gym... I was alot slower today but kept my 1.5 miles under 30 min.. but not by much... every jog I told him how much I was mad at him... which in hind sight means I can talk more while I am jogging with out huffing anf puffing.. (thats a good thing) so after the bitching on the tred mill I lifted and worked the upper body because the lower is just ouchy so that was all stretching...

Those of you who need a boost to get to the gym or out for a walk today.. this is your internet text message.. even 30 minutes of activity will make you feel better TRUST ME...

you can do it

okay so since I really do not want to work out today because it will have to be after work, I am posting this little blip on reasons why I should not HAVE to work out today...
1. I donwanna (not good enough)
2. the order comes in today and I will have to lift to put it away (not good enough).
3. I work til close then have to get up early (almost there but not good enough).
4. co-workers want to hit the gym tonight (crap...)
5. i will feel better once I get to the gym (double crap...)
6. I can put a cool sticker on my calendar when I get home from the gym (*looks down at shoes... damn)
7. I guess I have no good reason not to go to the gym tonight, even for a half hour... I could switch it up and not do the tred mill... yeah...

Alright, if I HAVE to go then you should too... 30 min of anything today... we can do it..

Hi All,

I just found this thread and am glad I did. I am a heavy guy, and am working on loosing weight. I have lost a bit of weight, and am still working on it. It is a daily struggle for me.

I have Diabetes, and & other major health issues so I'm concerned about my weight. I have started walking when I golf, and walk up and down the stairs, and walk Dino Martini, my mini pin dog. :doghead: Rather he has been walking me with this cold weather moving in. :cold: :dogwalking:

What helped me with losing weight is that I quit drinking soda and added more water in its place. I also stopped drinking regular whole milk and went to Chocolate SoyMilk.

I no longer drink soda's, but I do drink ice tea. I use Splenda or Equal. I drink in social situations. And the biggest change I have done is started drinking bottled water every day. Now, I do drink coffee in the morning, but for the remainder of the day, I am drinking water.

I try soy milk, and just cannot stand it. I tried to keep drinking it, but it made me so queezy. Any other suggestions for this? The only milk intake I have is with my coffee in the morning.

hottprof

I would say drink regular milk then... but like skim or 1% or even 2% and ween yourself down to skim...or cheese or yogurt or something to get your daily calcium intake.

I drink soy only because I can not digest milk anymore... milk is still the best thing for you to drink but alas my body says no...

if you are also lactose intollerant you can try rice milk, lactade, or almond milk... just a suggestion

That means endorphine RUSH.... :cheerleader: okay so the plan for today is get back in to the tredmill jog routine and hit up approximately 3.1 miles or roughly a 5K... tomorrow starts week two of the "learning to run" portion of the training...

so where ever you are with training be it for a 5K or for yourself, a reunion or just because it is winter and it is more fun to stay all snuggley warm inside you can do it...

30 min a day... sorry if these posts get redundant but for me it is helpful to stay motivated...

OK! So I'm done with finals and have decided to postpone my move until after Christmas...and now it begins! I have officially entered my first half marathon(13.1 miles!)It is now put up or shut up time as far as training for this race goes.I started back today with an easy paced 3 miler and now I'm sitting here cooling down and thinking..."dang I sure have missed working out!" I have set a goal of 2.5 hours which ain't bad for a tank with arms and legs! I won't be setting the world on fire, but I will finish, barring injury or world cataclysm! So kudos to everyone, time to get the party started! Kat I hope your back gets better soon, that sciatic nerve can make ya wanna strangle someone! Happy workouts, everyone! Shad

well I am teaching myself to run since I never did much running growing up... not to say I was not active, I played hockey and field hockey and danced but running was not my thing. I needed new motivation to lose weight and get active... I woke up one morning after a dream I had abotu running and said I am doing a marathon by the time I am 30... well crap now I need to make it happen.. one small step at a time... right now I am working on a mile and a half and dropping time on that next will be a 5K after the first 8 week training is over...

I am not going to lie.. it hurts like a beeotch, my legs, back, chest everything.. but knowing that I am doing this for a goal of the 5k is hopefully going to keep me motivated since I am dropping the goal of losing weight (it just gets depressing).

I wish you luck with your workouts.. take it easy but work out hard... be be safe with it, back issues are nothing to take lightly as you seem to know... just be safe and stay out of the wheel chair you can do it... someone once told me to promise myself 10 minutes a day or like everyother... and once you get started you rarely stop after 10 (infact yesterday I ran okay jogged right through the ten min. mark)... so worth it

Hey fellow workout peeps. I thought I would come in and start joing in on the discussions. I have always been into working out through aerobic exercise and some weight lifting. It wasn't until I spoke with my personal physician about preparing my body for transitional surgeries that I had to start really bulking up on weights and proteins. He wants me to try and get down to below 10% BMI. I am at 23% now. Sheesh!! I am guessing about a year and a half to reach that goal realistically and without killing myself. Right now I am running about 4-5 miles per day indoors. If I run outdoors I can't seem to go as far, maybe 3-4 if i am lucky. I spend probably an hour per day lifting weights focused on chest, arms, shoulders, back and legs. I end my day with aerobics, light cardio and stretching. If I don't do the last part i wake up like a pretzel!!

Thanks for the welcome!!

No...as long as I am bulking muscle which is long term goal. LOTS of protein. I have lost 4% with only a 2 lb body change which I will gain back through muscle eventually. I have a friend that just achieved 12% BMI and he looks great.

* I am scratching my head now picking up the phone to call my trainer.*

Shoveling snow...that takes some dedication...goodluck with that!!! I am sure your neighbors are loving you.

*leaving to go read through thread again and see why you can't run yet*

Have a great day!!

I do most of those stretches as it is... I guess I will have to get deeper in to them... I am a bit over flexible due to 16 years of dancing... so I will work on the ones you posted.. my hammies were always the hardest to stretch.. thanks a bunch for the suggestions :)

Hi weather, welcome to the thread! A quick question? Does your doctor want your bodyfat that low to speed your healing after surgery? 10% isn't unhealthy if you are maintaining your muscle mass,I'm just curious.Kat,I hope the stretches help with the hamstring issue, that is a nagging muscle to pull for sure! Yesterday I did a fast 3 mile or so run around my mama's neighborhood and did my long run today.I have never broken 1 hour for six miles and today I ALMOST did it.Finished in 1hr,1 minute. But had the damnedest coughing fit I've ever seen because I forgot to wear my balaclava and it was sub-freezing temps! DOH!But it felt good to maintain almost 10 minute miles which is blazing fast for my big slow butt! Happy Weekend everyone! Shad

Hey shadows papa...appretiate the welcome!! Yes this is what my primary care physician advised when I asked him. I have a consultation next week with a doctor my therapist set me up and will ask him again as well. It is for healing and also asthetic purposes for myself. I dont want to go the distance and not give 100% to gain my most desirable results.

Congrats on maintaining the 10 minute mile!!

Thanks for sharing the 10% question and answer guys... I guess you just hear about some people with a 10% BMI and it is not healthy.. I guess I just hear it about models but if you have the muscle mass I guess that is safer than just being a waif right?

I am hoping to get back to the gym tonight... might walk it out and do "killer" as my girlfriends and I have dubbed the Arc Trainer no running yet I do not think.. that will wait until after christmas...

It sounds like you all are doing well. I, however, am completely frustrated. I've been sick since before Thanksgiving and will be sick until sometime after Christmas. I haven't gone to the Y because I don't want to spread anything and, even when I felt better, I still had a cough that I could not control.

So, I'm stuck with walking outside which, in this weather, turns my beaker on like a full force faucet.

Frustrated!

Ouch Gemme, I know how you feel with a cough you can not control. I finally broke down and went to the DRs. after not having a voice for 3 weeks, and I was given a fast acting inhaler for when my coughing got so bad I could not breathe. I am not asthmatic nor have I ever used one before but dang if it didn't help.

I would try walking at the Y. warm up your body and go slow. OR try yoga or even just dancing around your house while listening to fun music. Let your body heal but try to let it know you are ready for the healing by pushing it a bit more everyday.

it is amazing what you can do when you think you can !!!

Goodluck feeling better. Being Sick just plain sucks :)

Thanks. When I get to the point where I wouldn't feel bad or get dirty looks for being there (coughing and hacking and sneezing), I'll go back to the Y.

I don't know if I'm still contagious, but I can always spread stuff and my coughing fits are still pretty bad once they get going. It is starting to slow down a bit, so I'm hopeful it won't be too many weeks more now. :cheesy:

Sorry you have been sick Gemme. I am not sure what you have but it may be pretty safe to say you are probably not contagious any longer. Dirty looks I can relate to at the gym. I have asthma and I used to get very coughy in the
past while working out. I kept a towel with me and used that when necessary to cough into and such. I wouldnt worry about the dirty look, just go, enjoy, and feel good!

I say thank you to her....

How was everyone else's Christmas? I am off New Years Eve and Day, but I have to work on the 2nd, so I am not drinking or anything..Just hanging out at home watching movies...

yeah chocolate... I was fairly good, enjoyed dinner and had a few cookies nothing too extravagant... the hammie is getting better it has now moved into the calf and it charlies on me every once and a while... I am sure if I take it easy tomorrow night and then stretch really good it will un-kink itself... I hope...

I'm guessing here but I suspeect that the "Resolution Crew" are those people who go to gyms with the resolution to lose weight, do so for about 1-3 months and then disappear. Tends to be the busiest time of the year at gyms.

I'm trying to workout more at home and have been comtemplated getting the P90X system (or it's precursor to start with). Anyone used either the Power 90 or P90X systems?

timely comment about pants. I spent the bulk of my day pulling mine up. True to form, I get so alienated from my size at times I don't even notice if my pants are looser sometimes. When I first started eating better for my insulin resistance diabetes, it was back in 2002-2003. I drove my friend all around the valley with her young son at the time. I was juuuuuust starting to get more mobile, and this was a full year before the big dramatic weight drop. Anyway, I drove a voyager minivan because it was the only vehicle I could fit behind the wheel in, that I could afford.

Little D rode in his car seat, and M and I would tool around. We stopped for Chinese food one day, and I worked on gettin D out of his car seat in the back. Well, I bent down, and as I did, my jeans fell right down to my ankles in the middle of that little parking lot. Laughter ensued and the comment from M was classic "Chris, I think it's safe to say you're starting to lose a little bit of weight there"...

LOL.

Anyway, fast forward to today, I must have pulled up my pants a dozen times. yeah, I know.. there's this great invention called a BELT. (thanks, got the memo). I don't think abut belts, because for the most part, I'm sittin' at my computer and won't sit wearing jeans if I'm working at home. why?

well, tonight I had a light bulb moment... hey, these pants are really just one size up from my smallest size jeans from 2005/2006, I wonder if.... no, can't be!

well, on a hunch, I grabbed those jeans that have been collecting dust in the closet for the last 3 years.

I just slipped them on like it was nothing. :-|

To which my reply in my head was "Chris, I think it's safe to say you're starting to lose a little bit of weight there"...

the bonus is: I feel like I just bought a pair of new jeans without spending the money. niiiiiiiiice.

looks like the forced walking due to no car is working.

I gotta say that I love my iPod Touch. I have a few apps that I use for workouts. So today started with:

16 pushups (the app is called 100 pushups and gradually builds up to 100)
81 situps (similar app as above but with a goal of 200 situps)

I also have Men's Health Workouts, which has a mod that doesn't include gym weights. I haven't gone through the whole circuit yet but did:

3 x 10 Bulgarian Lunges
3 x 12 Hip Raises

(since I had already done the pushups previously didn't make sense to do it again).

3 x 10 arm curls
3 x 10 shoulder raises

I did those two sets without pause and one after the other (right arm curl, left arm curl, right shoulder raise, left shoulder raise, repeat).

I'll also do some pull-ups (as much as I can) throughout the day, using my Iron Gym Pull Up Bar.

Also had fruit for breakfast and 24 oz of water.

I am so glad to see you guys posting in here. It is great to have a support system even if we have never actually talked in person :)

to me... in my head... it is like if I do not work out or do not hit the gym I should not post today and I will let someone down. Weird thinking I know but it works, I have been to the gym 14 times this month, a new record for me. I am hoping to squeeze a work out in on thursday after work before it closes.

There are a lot of other ones. I do have a yoga one that tells me how to do the various moves and lets me chain them together to make a routine. (Yoga Stretch is the name of the program).

I also have iFitness which is a nice little app that allows you to create your own routines, use some of their routines and has visual photos on how to do various exercises (including women specific routines).

No New Year's resolutions here, just keep on keeping on and try to maintain my fitness in the face of increasing school pressure as springtime gets here.I have been doing a bit of swimming and running in order to finish the half marathon 10 days from now.I'm not in peak running shape but I WILL FINISH :D Then back to the pool for some serious swim training to get ready for my next big trick;attempting a 5 mile swim in the Cumberland River before school REALLY overtakes my life! The mountain biking is going slow due to all the bad weather we are having here, but that's just icing on the cake if I get out and ride in the winter weather.Right now,it's just hunkering down and waiting to see if the snow is gonna hit or not.Hello to everyone and hope you're having a great week and have a great weekend! Ok I finally have found a work out that I am willing to do.....
5 miles from here there is a new roller rink dedicated to roller derby :olympics:
and they have weekly classes..... I love skating always have,,actually i used to do some speed skating prior to gaining another person in weight.....
so i will be heading there on saturday to register for the classes....and enjoy the scenery as i skate around the rink......behind all those nice fit trim (oh am i objectifying? Damn right I am) motivations that will be in front of me.... :goat: I may be old and fat but roller skates/inlines are like being in water......you can still go fast and not feel the ummm..ummm extra 90 pounds...and its a hell of a work out.

Linus

29 pushups
(did these inbetween the pushup sets)
2 x 12; 1 x 15 arm curls
2 x 12; 1 x 15 shoulder raises

112 situps.

3 x 15 hip raises

No Yoga today. I've decided that to help keep the workout from getting too long I'm going to do that on alt days -- so one day workout next day yoga. That keeps my fitness regime to 30 min a day at the start of the day.

I also got an app to remind me how much water to take in (I have suspicions that I'm borderline dehydrated most of the time). Interestingly enough, since I've started drinking more I sleep better. A hint I suppose. ;)

Great to see all the neat ideas to stay fit.

Dean, good luck on the skates. Those can be quite the challenge (very different than ice skating I find). Maybe once in L.A. I'll see about finding classes on how to use roller blades properly.

Shadows papa, good luck on the marathon. WOW. 10K is nothing to sneeze at. Just to finish that would be impressive in my book.

Linus

I'm still working on getting into a rhythm for workouts. Over the weekend, because of the server move I got lazy. I was so exhausted that sleep was the priority over workouts. Add to that an early and long day (8am-6pm min) for 5 days this week and workouts didn't seem that inviting. What I did do is get a band (blue) for workouts and realized that I could do my reps while I was teaching or my colleague was (preferred). So I did that today and got in a few sets of arm curls, tricep raises, arm raises and chest flyes.

I've been contemplating getting the P90X system. A friend is willing to sell me their extra copy. Anyone used this?

Linus
01-19-2010, 08:55 AM
Well, I got back into my workouts today. I got the precursor video set to the P90X system (Power90) and could only do 20 min of the workout (next time I'll eat a bit before doing the workout). It's pretty intensive.

On the plus side of things, I've lost 8lbs so far in two weeks so I've been at least good about what's going in versus going out. My water consumption also has improved thanks to my little app.

Go Team BFP!! :cheer: :heavyweight:

Well I can mark doing a half marathon offa the Bucket List now! :D I completed 13.1 miles in 2:49:42,a fair bit slower than the 2:30 I was shooting for,but with no more training than I got in prior to the run,I'm happy with it.The best part of it all was that my girl's son decided to do the 2 mile kid's run and we ran the first mile together then she followed him back to the finish. It was rainy and cold the whole run,and the most beautiful sight I saw was them waiting in the rain for me at the finish;that is what kept me going the last 3 miles, knowing they were there, because I really wanted to quit, but quit isn't in my DNA sequence:) So now I have decided that I think I have a full marathon in me somewhere, but with school starting,it may have to wait a year or two to get out! :trampoline:I did enroll in a Spin Class to get in shape for spring/summer road cycling and will be back in the woods on my mountain bike and back in the pool training for a 5 mile swim attempt this spring! Hope everyone is gettin' 'er done and having fun in the doing! Shad

w00t! Congrats, ShadowsPapa! That must feel awesome to have that done and experience that run with the little one.

I managed to get through another 20 min workout this morning (this time with the resistance bands). My arms feel like rubber! I'll probably continue with just the 20 min version for a week or two and then up it to see if I can complete the whole 30 min workout.

I saw my doctor yesterday and he was very impressed with my last lab work and my blood pressure (it had been climbing but since introducing more exercise it's dropped back down to a good value).

Go Team BFP! :cheer:

Well, I'm completed the 35 min cardio workout (from starting stretch to ending stretch). I managed to keep up with about 98% of the exercises and only got confused on a couple.

I hate squats more than any other exercise. I have a squat machine—I still hate :annoyed: them in my leg routine which is once a week

Squats are always a challenge and weighted ones I don't think I can do because of back issues. I used to do the leg press and because of cycling could easily do 250lbs+. It has been quite a while since then. However, I do lunges now and I still hate those.

I just finished my free weight/resistance band training this afternoon and got even farther than before (35 min of 45 min). So still getting there. I'm at least keeping up with the reps and exercise. I had a vegan protein smoothie before that and am feeling good (although my arms are like rubber right now).

Just have to keep at it, even the exercises we don't like! :)

I got a kettlebell. Just one, since I can trade off arms and then use it to tone both simultaneously. It's lime green and I've dubbed it Satan.

It's still sitting in the box though. I look at it like  and it looks at me like :weightlifter: and I look at it like :innocent: and it looks at me like :sumo: and I look at it like :overreaction: and it looks at me like :slapfight: and I look like this :nailbitin: and it looks like :smileywhip: and I look like this :help:

I am seriously patting myself on the back because one of my goals this year was to be able to post something to this thread!

Another goal was to treat my body better and to start working out again. All of that being said, my youngest daughter told me about a Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred workout DVD. I don't watch TV much, but I'm familiar with The Biggest Loser - which is the show that Jillian is on and trains the contestants.

My daughter tells me that "Sure Momma, no problem you could totally do this workout - it's not that hard."

Mind you - my daughter is a size 5. And prior to having her children she never went above a size 0. I'm thinking she has a pretty good grasp of what I'm capable of doing in regard to exercising. Let me just say: NOT!

So, last Wednesday I excitedly went to the store and picked up the DVD. I brought it home and read the packaging. On Thursday, I sat in front of the TV and watched the DVD. And finally, on Friday I started the workout.

Suffice it to say that my daughter is a big fat liar (even though she's only a size 5). I thought I was going to die!!!! But it wasn't until the next day when my body was aching that the effect started to sink in. I was in some serious pain and considering having a little talk with my daughter about exaggeration.

I've stayed with the workout everyday (with exception of my day of rest) - loving the way I was feeling - even though I was in pain. I'm relishing in the way my body is feeling again. I have more energy and I'm starting to feel allllll sinewy again!

Everyday has been an adventure and I go through this workout knowing it only takes 20 pretty doggone intense minutes and I'm done!

I'm proud of me! Here I am - in the WorkOut Zone!

w00t! I just finished my 35 min sculpting/toning/workout video. It's pretty good at using resistance bands. This has been perfect for me when I'm on the road just as much as when I'm at home.

I've been pretty good about keeping to good meal sizes and healthier meals, although I do slip now and again (especially on the road) back into some soda stuff.. :P

Between my week in Toronto and my week here in Vegas, I've been good about keeping my workouts going. I've been doing extensive walking (tonight I spent it playing tourist walking from the Mandalay to the Belagio and back again). Since I historically haven't been doing any exercise when teaching online or in the classroom, this is a huge improvement over the past. Additionally, I've been doing the the strength training and that is a near immediate results (visually).

I've been a bit better on the snacks but not great (they offer too many free sweets and sodas at the training facilities and not enough water). I, at least, try to ensure that I limit myself to no more than 1 can of diet soda so that brings down what I drink significantly but I need to remove it from my diet completely (I had done it before for nearly a year).

I'm doing 30-60 minutes a day of cardio with stretching before and after about 4 times a week now and eating much better. I enter my info into thedailyplate.com and it breaks down my fat, sodium, cholesterol, sugar, fiber, protein, and calories each day. When you enter any fitness for the day, it recalculates it into your food intake automatically. I like that, being that I'm part sloth.

I need to knock off the kidding around and really get into some weight resistance exercises. I've got the kettle bell *grimace* and some light hand weights and a chair (for my triceps and suck ass balance). I've been super slacking on my ab work too, which is normally quite easy for me. I've just been too lazy.

I think it's a case of 'at least I'm doing SOMEthing' right now.

I have been so very good with working out! I had to take an 18 day hiatus because I strained the rhomboid muscle when I was shoveling snow back in mid February.

I worked out last night for the first time in those 18 days off. O. M .G. I loved how it felt to work out again...to feel that burn, to gasp for breath b/c I'm being pushed to my limits.

I woke up this morning and have yearned all day to do my workout, but was busy with one thing or another. Now here it is 10 PM and I can't do my workout b/c I'll wake up my downstairs neighbor.

I'm feeling like a bit of a failure. grrrrrrr.

This past week, I saw my trainer for the first time and was evaluated and then had my first session. Holy smokes, it HURT!

You know you're out of shape when it takes two and a half days for the soreness to ebb. Blech. I got back in the gym today (for weights....I've been doing my cardio all along) and it wasn't as bad. Of course, I'm on my own for a few weeks until my next session, so I'm probably cheating with form, but I'm following the recommended exercises and the weights assigned to me. I'm taking the good wherever I can see it since I sincerely loathe the weights. Any progress is good, in my book.

My abs are back into our old love-hate relationship and I expect them to be washboard slick in a couple of months.

For me, getting there is the biggest hurdle. Once I'm there, I'm good. I tool about doing this or that or whatever I want (until the evil weights entered my life again, that is) and everything is fine.

Still hammering away at crossfit. It's been kicking my ass. I will say I've only missed one workout in the last month. Every morning is something new and that's pretty cool. Some of the stuff I just can't do. My gym doesn't have rings and probably every 10 days the work out calls for rings and I have to ad lib. I can't do double unders, YouTube- Double Unders demo, but I keep trying. And one day I'll be a big dog.

Well....I own my own weights and gym which I love having. But because I suffer from severe PTSD, and I'm moving through that trauma, I haven't been able to workout.

Well, I started up again yesterday because i really miss it. But today was the first day I started Shaun T's Insanity program which full blown cardio like you have never seen it. I thought I was going to die. I had to pause it probably 5-6 times to catch my breath. There's exercises on there that I had never seen and they are incredible.

This is a 60-day cardio program to change your weight and body dramatically.
No bullshit, it's an amazing program. There are 10 different disks, each having different 25-minute programs as you advance over a 60-day period. No weights or any equipment is required.

It's going to be rough. I'm an ex-smoker, 4 years now, and I felt every bit of breathlessness doing this program even after 4 years of quitting.

I'm also 53, but i have no problem of letting that stand in the way. I'm still strong enough to endure and build up with my weightlifting program.

Wish I had a squat and leg press machine, wich is he next thing im going to get.Squats can be dificult but I use a really snug weight belt and that helps a lot.

Jet, I understand the stall in your working out. I'm going through something similar (in that an emotional/mental state is affecting my physical self).

Two years ago this month, I left an unhealthy relationship. Since then, I've worked hard to be as good to myself as I possibly can and that's worked fairly well (give or take) until this month. My housemates are going through a nasty split and the past three weeks have been very difficult on all of us in the house, due to physical proximity as well as emotional ties to each person. The fights, the tears, the drama....*sigh*....I love them and I hate to say it, but I'm glad that one of them finally left the house. It is still not a healthy home by any standards, but it's better and that helps me.

I am a chameleon. I adapt to the environment. If it's a good one, I do really well. When it's not, unfortunately, I don't. So, I've been emotionally eating and hibernating in my space and generally not being kind to myself.

I am interested in the program you are talking about. If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost you? Feel free to pm me if you don't want to post it here. Thanks. :)

Yes. The same thing happened to me. I've had a lot of changes in my life lately and I let going to the gym slide. Then when things eventually settled down I let myself fall into a rut of being seditentary and didn't go to they gym. I really agree that exercise is very good for us when we start to feel tired and run down or even depressed. But it's soooooo hard to get motivated. It took me awhile to get back in the routine of going to they gym again but I forced myself and I'm so glad I did. I've been back going regularly now doing cardio and lifting weights for awhile and I can tell the difference in my energy level, and overall mental health, not to mention my body's conditioning and also sleep better at night.

I've seen the advertisements for Insanity on TV and it looks like a killer. Unfortunately, I don't think my knee could take it (blew it out when I was pregnant with Katie and it still gives me trouble)...and I don't know there is much you can do to modify a program like that.

Keep us posted, Jet...I'm curious to see how it goes.

An hour of cardio at a moderate pace (it's been a couple of weeks since I've been and didn't want to push myself too hard), 10 minutes on the rowing machine, about 5 minutes of ab work and a good stretching session and I feel wonderful!

My neck and shoulders tend to tighten up when I'm stressed and/or it's been a while since I've worked out (it keeps my limber) and I've had both to deal with lately. They were sooooo tight last night and early this morning and now....ahhhh. I feel sooo much better!

To get out and get moving I do the stuff I like to do.

I grab my skateboard or go play some horse at the basketball court. I also do hiking and geocaching. I have some handweights which I really like. I personally beleive that you should do what you like to, to stay healthy. There is no way you can force yourself to do stuff you hate and keep that routine without getting stressed out or quit. Plus its not about losing weight or looking some certain way. I can be strong and healthy just doing what I do best. :skateboard:

I do workout. Although I'm not sure why I bother. *sigh* I try to do an 1 1/2 at the gym. I like it and would stay longer but damned if they'll let you smoke in there. The day I signed up at this gym (planet fitness) they had a huge bowl of candy on the desk and 25 sheet pizza's on a table - Friday is pizza day - I was like YAY! This is my kinda gym!! lol.

I bought those shape up shoes a couple of weeks ago. I got the cute looking Mary Jane ones by sketchers so I could wear them to work. The first three days my legs and butt burned. And my back muscles hurt. I did read the instructions and you are only supposed to wear them for an hour at first. I disregarded that and wore them all day. Whatever. I bought them so my butt would be tiny like the girls on the sketcher and nike commercials. I figured, better just get to gettin'. ANYWAY...They do absolutely change your posture. Now my legs and feet hurt when I'm NOT wearing them. I want another pair now, I wish they weren't so expensive so I could start a collection. I need the flip flop ones for sure.

Turbo Kickboxing was not all that I had hoped it would be, unfortunately. Some of it had nothing to do with the class or instructor though. My gym is redoing their siding and the sounds from the construction overrode the mike and instructor so the music kept getting turned up but her mouth set kept going out. Blech. Annoying, but not a deal breaker.

Next week, the construction won't be going on right outside the gym and, hopefully, they will have picked a better headset to call the changes through.

I did, however, burn about 400 calories, even with the stopping and starting due to the sound system and just awkwardness in general. This was the instructor's very first time teaching a class, so it was an experience for all of us. Now, if I can just get the lady in front of me to understand what the words 'mirror my movements' means, I'll be set. She kept throwing me off because I'm aerobically ADD like that.

All in all, I do have hope for it and I got some good laughs looking at everyone muddle around. I'm sure I looked awkward too, but there were no mirrors so I couldn't see how bad I looked.

I finished up the day with another half an hour in the cardio room. Good times!

I'm involved in a new exercise regimen; I reworked my routine to lose more weight and thin out, and the best program that I have found is P90X. Terrific for cardio, abs and the rest.

I did do INSANITY FOR awhile and totally taxed my knees. What they don't tell you is that it's highly-advanced program.

It's taken about 3 weeks to actually start liking cardio and P90x helped with that. Now I'm into all 45 minutes of that part of the program. Every day is different and i'm excited to have found something that I can gain results from. I'm able to keep up with an exercise program more so now than when I was in my 30s. I quit smoking at 50 and I still have problems breathing with in tense cardio segments, so just take a break and wait to catch up.

P90X uses bands, dumbells and a chair occasionally. So you don't have to invest in a lot of equipment to do the program. And I have found that being in my 50s is not too old to be healthy and fit.

I have a problem with cardio that directly engages the knees because I stressed mine a couple of weeks back and now jumps really hurt. Also, I have issues with balance; it feels like my equilibrium is off.

I added P90x because I needed cardio to go along with my gym and weightlifting. So now I think i finally have everything I need.

I've changed my schedule. I worked out at 4 am today, and I'd like to keep that schedule. I've laid out a routine that alternates between p90x and weightlifting on my gym. I want to stun the muscles by alternating high reps with light weights and low reps with heavy weights each week.

That's the best part for me.Jumping on the indoor bike and riding it for an hour a day.Keeps you tight.I throw around my 100lb barbell when I don't have a lot of time for a real workout. When I do have time I will hit every muscle group from Monday through Friday with no days off.I have been lifting weights since I was 12 years old.I have tried stopping my exercise routine many times in the past due to long work days or an illness but it's like my body needs it and I will actually go through withdrawals if I don't lift something heavy like a couple of 50lb dumbbells.I usually go slow and burn-in each rep.I don't go more than 4 sets for each muscle group and never more than 12 reps in each set.I like free weights the best but will use cables for my back routine. My legs are my weakest link so I do lots of lunges and leg extensions and curls to keep them strong.I prefer sumo squats to regular barbell squats using a free weight.I can easily spend up to 3 hours in the gym but found 2 hours a day is plenty of workout for me.I seem to have tons of energy between 9am-12noon..why? it beats me.

Welp. I've been doing the Couch-to-5K app (C25K) and running every other day. I recently got Five Fingers KSO Trek shoes so I get a near barefoot running experience (use more muscles to do the cardio). I'm holding off on the weight/P90X stuff until I get more room (with the packing/moving I have boxes everywhere  )

Hopefully once I'm in L.A. I'll be able to do this better (P90X)

Hey Linus let me know how those shoes work for you. I have been contemplating getting closer to a barefoot type of running shoe. I am currently exercising my brain a LOT more than my body. I am just in a holding pattern with working out during this school year. I did enter a 4 mile run for the end of July because I'm jonesing for an event T-shirt.:twitch:. I'm just trying to stay active by riding my mountain bike at least once a week, running a couple of times a week and this week's project is taking a study break every 30 minutes and doing 10 pushups.Anything to move and stay active! They have been pretty good thus far. You have to change the way you run. With regular running shoes heel strike is more common but when running with these you have to try to avoid that (since I tend to do that, I've been running more on the balls of my feet; see their Running FAQ here (http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/technology/faqs_barefoot.cfm)). My recovery is better and I'm burning a lot more than I thought I would (40 min run/walk combo is burning 500 calories based on my Body Bugg).

I was never much of a person to work out. With my family's heart health history, I was feeling like I needed to seriously consider some cardio. At the recommendation of a coworker and friend I started taking Zumba. I never could get into the stationary bike or anything for more than about 20 minutes, but Zumba made the hour fly by because it's mostly like dancing which in my younger days I closed down many a club doing without a second thought. After a year or so of going regularly then dropping off, I got certified to teach (at the recommendation of my instructor and a few classmates) and for the past year have been teaching and loving it. Anyone else out there ever make up dance routines with your friends in jr. high? That's pretty much the gist of it. I would highly recommend it to anyone else out there who likes to shake her grove thing, but isn't so hot on the cardio machines.

I volunteer at my local YMCA for a free membership, 3 hours a week and it gives me access to everything!!!
I highly recommend checking out your local Y to see what opportunities are available to you...

Some one at work burned me the whole PX90 work out (12 work out discs). It looks insane and i may not survive :)

But I'll start on Monday. eek.

SOME threadstalker... that shall remain nameless (mr.bent) thought it would be funny to point out this old post of mine from May saying I would start Monday with P90X ( or PX90 or whatever the fuck) So now I feel compelled to post a retraction. NO i did not start that Monday. Yes it is still sitting on a shelf, in a bag, never played.

But for the record, I now have a free gym membership through work and I went last nite. Did a very evil 30 mins ab class and nearly died. Tonite I go back for bellydance class.

and who knows I may someday actually do those dvds. maybe.

So after taking oh so long off (aka being a lazy toad) I've finally found my mojo again and it's taken me in a fun new totally competition-less direction - dance!

I've gone back to ballet 2x's a week and belly dance 3x's a week. I'm having a blast and shedding the fluff of being lazy. I've also added pilates 3x's a week.

I'm not sure if my knees will ever let me get back into endurance sports again, but if so, it'll be outrigger canoeing.

Here's to finding balance again.. :)

i started working out again about 10 weeks ago. after 21/2 yrs of some major health issues and looking at more if i didnt get off my ass. i was laying in bed hacking from the ciggs i smoked that day and thinking this is miseriable! so in the middle of the night i tossed what was left of my pack of smokes an layed on the living room floor remembering some of the basics i had been taight in jc and fire camp. living in a small apt now i had given away my weight machine so i had to do with what i had. i was able to manage landing a recumbent exercise bike off craigs list cheap!! i was pushing 290lbs at 5'10 and didnt even trust my balance for an up right bike. then i purchased one of those door mount pull up bars some dumb bells and streach bands.. just doing the basics and drinking alot of water 10 weeks later and 53 lbs lighter ,,no more smoking i am feeling great.. i wish i had never stoped taking care of me!! now i do cardio 2xs a week and strenght 3 xs with a day to chill..

I'm an instructor, so obviously I like it. It's designed to be fun and dance based, so you can get a great cardio work out and have a good time. It's Latin dance based at it's roots, and there are often some hip hop and "world" dance elements as well. I am particularly fond of a Bollywood routine I've been doing lately. The classes can vary a lot from instructor to instructor depending on that individuals preferences and skills. You can check out some videos on youtube if you want to get a sense of what the class would be like. Let me know if there are any specific questions I can answer.

I have a bad back, so a lot of my workout is core focused. I also had my hip scoped 2 years ago (massive labral tear and pincer lesions), and it never fully came back. I was sent to physical therapy again by a great doctor because I wanted to avoid a second hip surgery to release the big tendon that connects your thigh to your hip. So far, that's really improved things for my hip.

My physical therapist is great in that she has also helped me design a workout program I can do and not hurt myself further. I alternate on this schedule:

Cardio - 30 minutes (or more if I can tolerate) on the treadmill and 15-20 minutes on a recumbent bike. I am trying to work my way back to 60 minutes on the elliptical trainer, which I prefer to the treadmill, but my hip therapy interferes with that right now.

Core - I do machines for upper body strength, combined with some resistance bands. I also do a lot of fit ball, which is one hell of a workout, though you wouldn't think it was. I also combine this with a lot of stretches that are yoga-based for my back. And we're now starting to add in kettles and medicine ball stuff.

Welp. The running is helping. To date, with running, extra walking and watching my food intake (thank you Body Bugg for keeping track of all this stuff) I've lost 14 lbs since May 21 (roughly 2 months). I figure I've been doing well as a result.

they have some workouts. just be careful to not use too much weight. you want to do the exercises true to form with little weight, then once you have your balance and extension range comfortable, you can increase to whatever weight feels heavy without compromising the technique of the lift.

i like to focus on core strength first extremities later.

i would love to buy a home gym but my discretionary cash for the 2011 fiscal cycle is earmarked for tuition and travel ;)

i don't have any money to invest but i have perfect discipline...i am thinking that + freeweight + the right exercises should = some progress at least....that being said, it occurs to me that my school should have a fitness center somewhere. I will look into this

P90x on DVD. The cardio, plyo and core synergistics and yoga are great. I've integrated P90X with my weightlifing

You can use bands instead of weights, towel, water. That's about it. I couldn't continue with INSANITY because it is so intense. Theey don't tell you that its advanced you need to be about 22. Fuck. So I started P90x about a week and half ago, its amazing.

What does "core exercises/strength" mean to you? All muscles are connected together and it's good idea to exercise all them, to a degree, to ensure better muscle tone. You could do the Navy Seals Workout program: http://sportsmedicine.about.com/cs/conditioning/a/012204.htm

You dont need to spend a lot of money on workout equipment...I bought a bowflex foe 40 bucks at a garage sale, freeweights and bars for ten at the same place, got an exersise bike for eight bucks at another garage sale..my weight bench was in someones trash that I fished it out for free.it was a bit rusty but a can of paint fixed it up fine..check the goodwill stores I got a tredmill nearly new for seventy five bucks.I also have gotten a fue asorted peices hear and there at the goodwill and thrift stores..all works fine for me..got a regular gym on the paito anytime I need to workout. The goodwill store has a lot of tapes on working out..got lots of those too.

yeah? I bought a Bowflex when I moved to GA because I needed to exercise at home. I sent it back within a week because it was a rip off and the biggest piece shit there was. Not only that, the UPS guy said, "do you know how many of these get returned? All the time"

Bowlfex it's a line of shit. And people on those spots didn't get that way using a plastic Bowflex machine. Shaping takes quality resistance and hitting every muscle group you can. Like i just said bands are terrific and so is P90X. Very little equipment is needed.
Secondly, putting together a program and diet suited to your goals.

I'm into making as many gains as I can at my age. And so I chose to invest, heavy guage steel gym with cable capabilities, decline and incline bench and so forth. The more exercise flexibility, the better.

If you're going used, go to Play It Again Sports where the equipment been tested and approved for sale. We're weights.....sometimes heavy weights and benches that have hold up. I would never piecemeal weight equipment together from previous owners at garage sales and so for. Weightlifting and exercises just isn't to be taken lightly IHO.

Almost every city has Play it Again Sports. That's where I bought my 300-lb barbell set for $185. compared to online or new for upwards of 400 dollars depending on the manufacturer.

When I buy from the good will store I make shure whatever exrsise equipment is in good order and will do the job,I never have had a prob with asking them to give it one more check to make shure. When buying at garage sales I check things out really good first to make shure its sound,im well able to handle any kind of hand tool to repair things I use to workout with or anything else for that matter..I always have had to be able to fix and repair stuff so I know what to look for when im buying used things.if u dont know how get someone to go with u to check things out that dose. With the economy the way it is I dont know many who arent doing what they can to get a buck to stretch a bit..but do it saftly.I was told the goodwill store puts the exersise equipment out on monday and if u r a senior u can get a discount on tuesday..or what ever day they set it up for.

Secondly, putting together a program and diet suited to your goals.

i just went through a nutritional counseling program and my diet is exactly what i have been prescribed...we discussed my workout routine and my counselor just kind of "approved" what i already do without really recommending any additions or subtractions...

core refers to the muscles around your mid torso. they affect your balance, back, abs, stamina, and flexibity. anything that works your back butt abs obliques chest hip flexors is good for your core.

it is important to keep yourself strong in your core, because your extremities depend on your core for support.

I do core synergistics which are exercises that hit core muscles and other muscle groups at the same time. It's work. But very little equipment is needed, you can use bands or weights. Bands are amazing. I dont use them but people who do get great results. As far as abs go, I only do them apart 3 times a week.

These FiveFinger Vibrams have been awesome for my running. It used to take me a couple of days to recover from running and now it takes a few hours (ranges from 2-8 hours depending on how much water I've had over the course of previous days).

As of today, I'm down 15lbs. Not a lot but a good start. I did plateau for a bit and the running has been helping to break that plateau. The next few weeks should help more since I'm not caught up in teaching.

Help advice please..Im haveing a discusion with someone about soda..diet vs regular as well as on what else to drink besides water wich I can drink if I put some flavor in it.The water is fine its just after a fue glases I go back to something else.Anyhoo my question is about soda..the diet sodasa are suposed to be O's all the way down the ingreedence list regular soda has a bunch of carbs ,sodium, sugars ect.I hear diet sodas arent good either for u so whay call then diet of they casn be as bad as regular soda..come on,what gives?Thereason im asking is I hae gotten stuck on a palteau and cant drop below it no mater how hard I work out and cutting my food iontake down causes me to wipe out so...now what.I could exersise harder but will blow my back out .If I drink juices that have as much sugars and carbs as anything else..sports drinks, the ones ive tryed suck.

Try adding a slice of lemon to your water or tea (sans sugar and actual tea leaves/bag -- could create "sun" tea). Diet sodas, with aspartame, screw up your body's response to glucose (sugar). It thinks it has sugar from it but doesn't. I've actually found that when I cut out all soda (at the time it was ONLY diet) I lost an additional 5lbs.

I recently started drinking it but I limit myself to no more than one glass a day. I do drink upwards of 4-6 32oz bottles of filtered water a day. If I stick with water specifically, I tend to lose weight easier.

sodas are bad umkay!?!?

diet regular is doesn't matter. it isn't real food. it is chemicals, and things like aspertame and sucralose actually inhibit the breadown of fats into usable energy, and convert to dangerous chemicals in our system. :readfineprint:

it has been a belief of mine that since the introduction of diet soda, more people have developed things like restless leg syndrome and fibromialgia.(sp?)
as well as the "rationalization" that if i eat a big fatty burger/fry meal, the Diet Coke will cancel out the bad stuff........:seeingstars:

that being said, i do enjoy a nice ice cold soda, but i have weaned myself off diet mostly. drink the occasional energy drink, or "leaded" soda (reg):sunglass:

the less i drink, the more i realize how yuck i feel when i do. same with wheat and potatoes and other high carb stuff. i like it when i am eating it cause it tastes good, but no sooner than it hits bottom, i am bloaty and miserable.
will i ever learn?:byebye:

I would suggest cutting out the soda entirely and pretty much anything but water. I have a client who was the same way in that she didn't like water and needed to flavour it in order to drink it. That was two months ago and now she has no problems drinking 2-3 litres of unflavoured water a day, and she's also cut out diet soda (which she used to drink a lot of) completely. You just have to slowly adapt yourself to it. Actually I've had quite a few clients that have insisted to me that they can't drink unflavoured water when I've told them they need to drink more...few months later and they've got no problems with it.

Anyhoo my question is about soda..the diet sodasa are suposed to be O's all the way down the ingreedence list regular soda has a bunch of carbs ,sodium, sugars ect.

What you're talking about are the nutritional facts, no the ingredients list. The nutritional facts may be all 0's but if you look at the actual ingredients list you'll notice they're just as full of crap. Same with anything that calls itself "diet" anything. The way they make a product into "diet" form is by taking out fat or refined sugar, and replace them with artificial sweatners. The problem, also, is that the nutritional facts do not cover sugar alcohols and other aritificial sweatners, nor the shit-ton of chemicals they pour in there. Read the actual ingredients list to get an idea of how healthy something is. If you can't pronounce half of it, you probably shouldn't be putting it into your body.

I hear diet sodas arent good either for u so whay call then diet of they casn be as bad as regular soda..come on,what gives?Thereason im asking is I hae gotten stuck on a palteau and cant drop below it no mater how hard I work out and cutting my food iontake down causes me to wipe out so...now what.I could exersise harder but will blow my back out .If I drink juices that have as much sugars and carbs as anything else..sports drinks, the ones ive tryed suck.

Because those companies don't actually give a rat's ass about people's health. There's an entire multi-billion dollar business in artificial sweatners, artificial flavours (for example, did you know that ethyl-2 methyl butrate is what creates the apple flavour in many products) and "natural" flavours (which only differ from artificial flavours in the method of their production).

I'd stay away from sports drinks or that flavoured "vitamin water." Stick to water.

Think of your food and drink as living vs. dead. Even that blue menu stuff people go on about is not something I'd ever want to put in my body. What you put in is what you get out.

You said you'd blow your back out if you exercise harder. What is the issue with your back? Has your doctor suggested you stay away from exercise, that you should not perform certain exercises? Are you using proper form, particularly in strengthening the lower back (usually the culprit)?

Just popping in to say 'HI'.

I just started working out about 3 weeks ago. Very slowly, very low weights. I'm waaaaaay out of shape and want to do it right and not hurt myself. Chefhmboyrd56 is my trainer, since he's a beefcake and knows alot about this stuff.

Just in three weeks I can tell a major difference. I can do more weights and/or reps, I can walk longer and my legs don't ache, and I can notice a little difference in how my clothes fit.

I really enjoy the working out when I'm alone with some tasty tunes cranked on the iPod and usually spend an hour at the gym. Just figuring out where I can eek out more time as I add different equipment and my workout gets longer.

I have been really crunched for time lately. I'm having a hard time "finishing" a workout. I can only get through one far enough to feel amped. I cant finish one to the point where I can find some relaxation during or after. One of the reasons I workout is because I refuse to be medicated for ADD, it does help. I bought a bicycle a couple weeks ago. when I work in town, I ride that thinking it would help me feel like I completed a workout. It's like I just started one when I get to work or get home. (average 10 miles). My normal is 60 to 90 minutes. I'm only getting about 20 to 30.

I'm wondering if Yoga would help. I don't know anything about it and don't have time to learn it in a class at the gym. I do know that I could do yoga just about anywhere. My questions are:

Can I learn yoga quickly? (I'm pretty well versed on how the body works. I've just never done yoga)
Is there a particular DVD someone could recommend for a beginner?

Thank you in advance.

Thanks to all that replyed about this subject,I use to drink a 12 or more of regular soda a day,now its diet...about 4 a day along with crangrape or sugar free kool aid now and then.Where I use to live the water was awful..yellow water ..really it came out of the tap that way and the watrer department says it ok to drink. Now,I live where the water out of the tap is really good to drink..I got some lemons at the store and have a picture in the fridge for when I want some.I am working on drinking less soda a day as quickly as I can.I quit bthe ciggys and I know I can quit the sodas.Oh about rls..I have it but never thought that sodas could effect it nor did I consider some of my muscel twitches and pain may be from sodas.I really though it was from my back injury.Intresting thought.
One more question...fruit..I eat a lot of it.Plums, oranges, bannas, peaches and apples.Could that be puting too much sugars in my system,I do eat veggies and not to much red meat anymore, mostly chicken, fish or pork sometimes.
Recently I met with the sergons about my back injury..if I can lose another 50 pounds I can avoid sergery. This weight has go to go.

Hi Rockin,

Diet Vs. regular. Let me see if I can explain this,

Soda is just plain bad. Diet sodas have more "salts" in them, not just sodium. (will cause water retention, which in most cases is not as good as it sounds)Artificial sweeteners have the same effect on the "craving center" of the brain as sugar or high fructose corn syrup. (more so most of the time.) People then, think it's ok to drink more diet soda. and they crave it.

I for years drank at least 4 cans of diet pepsi a day. when I learned how bad diet sodas are, I cut soda out completely. Within the next month, I had lost an additional 15lbs to the 6lbs (I think) That I had lost for the 2 months prior without any additional effort. I believe it was because I cut out the soda. I wasn't trying to lose weight at that time, it was just a residual effect.

Another way to think of it is, are "light" cigarettes any safer that "full flavor". Surely the answer is no. However, the marketing folks at the tobacco companies would like you to think so.

Good luck to you.

The issue with my back is ..marked dischernation at L4-L5..no extrudes fragments..degenerative change at L3-L4.On the docs report he sugested epidural injections before surgery to see how it worked cause the surgery will be extensive ad quite invasive. He also said other treatments before surgery. Why he didnt just go ahead and do some of what he sugested ..workmans comp shut down any response to him.he wouldnt do anything without it even tho he could have.I ask him if I could go thrue rehab he said NO wouldnt do any good..BS says I. Now im going to Lsu med center,it took me a year to get in the program, the rehab ppl gave me exersises to do many I already doing.Im lifting weights, rideing a bike..my butt goes numb after 2 miles then I cant feel my leg or foot for a while when I stop and get off the bike. The weights im useing are not over ten pounds hand weights but I do 4 to 5 sets of diffrent moves and am doing 75 to 100 modified sit ups every other day,30 to 50 depends on the day leg extions and a fue smaller things .I feel better with the exersise just stay sore and have poped my sholder out as well as my back gets spazed out if I dont pay attention to the warnings I get to back off a day or two or even a week.Any way thats the story on the back and workouts..I should be iun better shape and lost more weight by now.Im trying to fiugre out what to do next to shed more weight.

I had a setback to my working out a little over a month ago when I tripped and fell on my left knee (An item had been left in the middle of a store aisle, and I didn't see it.). After getting x-rays that looked fine, I waited ten days and then resumed working out. Unfortunately I felt that everything was all better so I happily went right back into long, high intensity work-outs. On the fourth day of that, my pain returned, so I've been resting since then, and my knee has been improving. Rest is seeming to really help it. Luckily I have this month off work, which is great because at work I am running up and down stairs all day (a five story walk-up school building). During this time of resting it, I have also had an MRI of my knee and this showed no tears but noted "mild arthritic changes." I am not sure what this means and will likely go to a doctor to try and find out what exactly this means in my case. My plan is to wait until I get to the point where it feels pretty much normal but then when I exercise again to take it easy this time. Usually I do very high resistance/intensity with lower speed on bikes and elliptical machines. I am going to try reversing the equation and doing lower intensity with higher speeds instead. My thought is that this will make it easier on my joints. I'm someone who is heavyset yet loves to exercise. Lifting weights and doing cardio just gives me a great mood lift and also helps me to manage my weight to some degree. Anyway, given my injury, I thought I would ask if anyone has any advice? Thank you for taking the time to read this. I have found people on this thread to be very wise and supportive.

Most of the time I have doctored myself with RICE- rest, ice, compression and elevation. If you hurt something, stop working it, ice it, bandage it and if it's something like an ankle or knee, keep it raised as much as possible. When I get twinges, I back off.

Lately, I have had pain in one knee doing heavy leg presses. I tried backing the weight off and it actually felt worse. I took a good look at the picture on the leg press machine where they show you how to work it and the guy in the picture was doing his presses with his thighs above parallel. I had been putting the seat as low as it would go, because I had been taught to do full squats in a weightlifting (Olympic style) club back in the day.

Once I raised the seat on the leg press machine so my thighs were just above parallel, I could go heavy again without it bothering my knee.

Hey you!

Try this: get yourself a Brita filter and use that for your water. It will end up being cheaper than bottled and taste WAY better than tap. Then, go to any store...grocery....Walmart....etc and go to the Koolaid aisle. Find the drink mixes to put into your water. Buy some. Use them and you'll be able to drink more water, which is better for you. I like Ocean Spray's White Peach Cran and Great Value's Orange and Great Value's Fitness Mix (has added vitamins 'n stuff but that's not why I buy it) Strawberry Kiwi. I drink a LOT more water when it doesn't taste like water.

I hope your knee gets better Jennifer!!!!! ((( YOU ))) :rrose:

I just started a new regimen today: I'm off for three weeks until my final semester that begins the end of August (leading into September) and I live about a mile (or more) from a great place to do a morning walk! The hiking trail surrounds a heavily forested golf course and it's about a two mile distance, doing the course one time. So I walk to the site, do two laps and then walk home - for a total of about 4-5 miles. I wanted to jumpstart my physical activity again because when I am busy with homework duties, I often end up sitting for hours just to read -- and then if that isn't enough, I often sit for hours just typing out my items that are due. What I consume for food is heathy and I get plenty of water in (during the course of the day - about 2 qts?), so I am focusing on revving up my exercise and since today was day one - my legs were on fire today, but they are better tonight. I think I will do a series of stretches before I head out in the morning and then do a little rest break between my laps and stetch a bit more, then see if this helps socialize me into my new routine. I've decided that if I can lose about 25 pounds between now and the end of October and then see if I can lose another 25 by the Christmas/New Years holidays, I figure that I will be in the best shape I have been in quite awhile. My wieght tends to yo-yo, but I think it's due to inactivity and having to sit for extended periods of time. I hope my plan of action succeeds (where weight loss is concerned) and also, to help me to feel better and to instill a stronger ethic for taking care of my physical health needs.

In an attempt to maintain what sanity I have left during the hectic next 9 months of school I have started back working out.I am running with my classmates 4 days a week, lifting weights 3 days a week and arranging more time to ride my mountain bike. I am entering an 11 mile mountain bike race in October,so I need to get as much ride time in as possible between now and then. It's a charity event for an organization called Ride for Reading and consists of an 11 mile trail race and eating donuts for time reduction! I have the eating part down to a science, now if I can just do the race without become real good friends with any trees along the trail:seeingstars: I don't have the luxury of time to do many long road bike rides right now,but I am planning on doing more as the hot weather abates.:hangloose:

OMG.. that sounds dangerous almost. Reminds me of the International Messenger Race they held once in Toronto. It consisted of riding from pub to pub in the middle of February during a storm. And as you hit each pub, you had to drink a whole pint of beer (some were Guinness).

I've been off the running since Little Rock and will start up again tomorrow, after dropping K off at the airport. I'll then be "working out" by doing the last of my packing and taking things apart. One more week...

+1 on the Brita. I drink at least a gallon of water daily, 1.5 on days I workout. Don't know where I'd be w/o my Brita!

Surprised no one has mentioned Green Tea (as in iced green tea). Easy to make sun tea (well, least in these parts since the sun shines everyday). I buy decaf green tea bags in bulk, throw a few in a glass container (with the Brita water!). Once brewed, tea goes into individual Nalgene bottles in frig so I can grab & go. Oh, and sweeten it up w/Stevia. :nixon::

I just want to say what a HUGE difference working out has made. I don't do much yet, as I've mentioned earlier, 'cause I was soooooo out of shape. But even what I have been doing made a very noticeable difference in my stamina at the Reunion last weekend. I'm sure I would not have been able to dance, walk, stay up late, or other things the way I did if I hadn't been working out some already.

So just a pep talk to anyone thinking of starting, or thinking you're too far out of shape for it to matter. It DOES make a difference, even if you start small.

Keep up the good work everybody.

How 'bout a motivational photo to start the week, which is an all-time fav of mine, go to link and scroll to post #652 & #653: HERE (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=108359701&page=22) (btw, I don't know the guy...wish I did though)

If those pics don't get you going you might want to have your pulse checked!

That is a GREAT link CTW! Thanks! This week so far has consisted of Lower Body/Abs on Monday, a 3 mile run on Tuesday, and Upper Body/Abs and a 3 mile treadmill run on Wednesday.Tomorrow will wind up being a rest day because I got a million things to DO! :seeingstars: I have also entered the Soldier Ride for September. It is a 25 mile bike ride in Nashville,TN to support the Wounded Warrior Project. I can't think of anything more motivational than supporting and empowering our returning service members as they continue their lives after serving our nation around the globe. :wwii-veterans: Shad

Today is the first time i've really worked out in over a year. Stretches, situps, crunches and a 1 mile walk. Well, it is a beginning at least. Headin in for a bubblebath cause I know tomorrow I am gonna be one sore little girl.

But I am proud!!!! It is at least a good start. Thanks for the thread and thoughts of encouragement!!!!!

I used to ride road bikes about 30 years ago...ugh, damn im old!
I was planning on getting a new bike in a few weeks, when it started getting cooler.
The Dr. that I scrub for, rides and we were talking about bikes one day. i mentioned that I was going to start looking for bike. What the hell ya know! He and my BFF went in and got me one for my Bday!! It is not the bike I would have chosen, but I really love it.

Note to self - Eat a couple of hours before workout....not 14 HOURS before the workout. No wonder I didn't have any energy last week. I was forgetting to eat. Ate about 45 mins before workout, some fruit and a protein beverage. Felt much better through the workout.

I hazzz muscle. You have to poke really hard to feel it through the fat, but it's there.

Cool @ riding bikes years ago. I use to ride when I was in my teens, but that was my transportation around town LOL! I wish I would have kept up with it over the years. That is AWESOME that the Dr and your BFF went in together for your birthday! Glad you like the bike!

I just finished three one hour yoga classes in a 24 hour period and I'm kind of ouchie.

I signed up for the Body Fit Challenge at my gym. It starts October 9th. I'm kind of scared because I'm pretty sure they're going to hand me my ass. And then laugh.

ALSO I'm signed up for a 5k October 9th AND a 5k trail run/obstacle course/mud run on Halloween.

Help?

I love 'em.

In a blender:

1 cup of uncooked oatmeal
1 cup of egg whites
1 cup of low fat cottage cheese
1 apple sliced thin and softened in butter

Drain off butter and add:
3 scoops of vanilla flavored protein (I use Gold Standard whey)
3 caps of vanilla extract
enough fat free milk to smooth batter

Cook in non stick pan until done on both sides.
Serve with low fat syrup, fruit or low fat whipped cream
