I thought I'd start a thread to see if other Okies were out there. I've lived in this state almost 3 years and haven't been able to get other Okies to meet and greet anywhere. I'm still good for anyone that wants to meet up in Tulsa or OKC. The drive is still going to be an hour for me either way. An eatery works better for me than a bar would.

Does anyone here, live in Oklahoma City? A move to someplace warmer in the Winter and lower in elevation is in my future. Oklahoma City is one place I'm considering, and I would appreciate any insights or comments you might have. Thanks in advance.

It's me JAGG I'm in Tulsa!!! Good friends with moonfemme. Liam ask any questions you have about OKC . we could probably answer them. There are lots of jobs here, cost of living is low, and housing is very affordable, not alot of crime and people are friendly. But rude drivers as a whole, friendly in person. Neighbors look out for each other and aside from winter the weather is pretty nice. An occasional tornado here and there but no big deal really. It's a pretty good place to live. Like any other place it has it's pro's and con's , every place is what you make it .

I personally think finding a job in Oklahoma is dependent on what you do
I lived there 4 years and couldn't find work the last 2 years in the profession I've been in for 15 years
I think it also depends on which city or town you chose to make your home in
Right now the economy is hard hit everywhere and those that have jobs should keep them
Just my own opinion
And I actually liked it in Oklahoma, but unless you're in one of the big cities, you're isolated from community and jobs

Yes Wolfy I'm sure those little towns far from big cities are mostly rural farming communities. I just read an article in US News and World report that Oklahoma's employment market is the best in the nation. The manpower employment outlook for the first quarter is 60 percent higher than the national average. 17 percent of companies expect to expand their work force, 75 percent expect to maintain current levels, and 3 percent expect to cut payroll and 5 percent were unsure. So that's a positive report as far as jobs go.

Life has a funny way of taking turns and I'm back in Oklahoma
I'll be in OKC on the 28th and that's the area I'll be looking to call home
I have orientation for a PT job there and that's a start anyhow
When one door opens, more are sure to follow
I think maybe this was where I was supposed to be all the time because it kept calling me back
I was edgy and stressed for over a month, but am quite calm since being back here
I know I certainly missed my cats and they missed me bunches

Just go into any grocery store or walmart, walgreen, any cafe, there are hundreds of apt and homes for rent and sale magazines, right by the front doors as you enter. They are free. Or grab a local newspaper the classifieds have a bunch as well. There are so many it will make you dizzy. Or call coldwell banker they have a rental division.

Finding a rental is easy, but finding a rental that will take my rescues and one I can afford right now is the problem. I see a lot in the paper, even see some on craigs list. Hopefully over the next 6 months, I'll find homes for 6 or 7 of them.

Elmore City is about an hour south of OKC
The movie Footloose was based on that town
It didn't allow dancing in it for about 100 years, a stupid law

Pres, you have relatives there? I mean, how did you come to choose Elmore City?

Oh, edited to add, I think you have to be born here to be a true Okie, lol.

i'm not moving into Elmore City per se. i think that it's just the closest town to where i'll br living. i'm moving in w/my best friend (nothing romantic-she's not butch and has given up on relationships). she's got a farm out in Garvin (?) Co. she wants some company, and i want some peace n quiet. i think this will be great for both of us. i'll get a chance to lick my wounds, and she'll have someone to talk to, keep the dog company while she's at work, etc. for once i won't have anyone to take care of but myself! the temp is milder; the house will be warm, and i'll have friends around there. looking so forward to this move....

ok, OK! i've finally arrived! of course, -10 degree weather was NOT a nice way to welcome a damselfemme fleeing cold climes! i forgive the Weather Gods their irony, since the extreme cold lasted only a short while. the weather has been beautiful here in south central OK! a show of hands, please? anyone near the "Mores"-More, Elmore City, Ardmore? i want friends! *putting my hands on hips and stamping a petite foot* i'm about 70 miles from OKC, if that helps, and get to the city fairly often. (this is pres, btw. apparently when i changed my nick, it really screwed up my account, so i had to go reregister.)
i do like it here, though tis different from anywhere else i've lived. i'm a Deep South grrl originally and never really lived outside the South.

Not quite settled in, but finally made OKC my new digs. The ride to work is an hour less each way now.

Honestly, if it wasn't for Starbuck and my ex, nothing would have got moved
I came down with either the flu or stomach virus last weekend and couldn't do a thing except hug the porcelain. Even water hated me along with Gatorade. So, we have my ex, who is going through chemo, Starbuck who just had shoulder surgery and me who was whining like a baby because I was ill. It was like the blind leading the blind.

I'm up for hanging out over a cheap meal or coffee whenever any of ya'll are up OKC way.

Seriously, I definitely want to meet as many of y'all as I can in OKC! Anyone know a good place for good coffee? My housemate is going on dayshift but I can find out when she's off one day soon. She'll be glad to drive me to the city and let me hang out for a while. (I don't drive.)

I finally made it OKCity for a dr.'s appt. Not good news, but I'll deal with it. Now I've got aapts with a neurologist at the NeuroScience Institute, a neuro-opthomologist, and a glaucoma specialist! The two eye docs are on the same day but some time apart. Perhaps someone in OKCity would like to meet me for coffee inbetween? This would be in the morning, so I understand if no-one can make it. The appt is in early April. Let me know if anyone's interested. If not then, then perhaps some other time someone could show me around OKCity? Or meet me for coffee somewhere?
If anyone lives near Ardmore or Ada and wants to meet somewhere closer, that's good. Or even Norman. I'm fairly amenable, though I don't drive. (I have a room-mate who wants me to meet friends.) Also, can anyone put me in touch with a local sangha?
If anyone wants to talk on the phone, let me know and we can exchange numbers. Due to my eye problems, being on the computer is hard for me sometimes.
Namaste, y'all!

I have a friend who is Buddhist and I wrote and asked her if she could help. She sent me a response and I'll share it with you here.

She said and I quote her word for word...Not sure what kind of Buddhist she is. If she's my kind, SGI, there's a center in OK city. 3800 N Cromwell Avenue , Oklahoma City, OK 73112-6328 (405) 947-1101. If she's a different kind then the best bet is the internet. Thanks for asking!

ok, everyone! i'm going to be in OKC on Wed , April 6th for 2 dr's appts, both at OU hospital. the first is at 8PM, the second is at 11:30AM. we could try to meet for coffee inbetween or meet for lunch after the second, whichever would be better for your schedules. i doubt that i'll be seeing well after either. since i don't know how long either will last, i'm thinking that maybe lunch at 1PM somewhere might be good, though i'll probably just nibble. i usually don't feel that great after eye exams and haven't been feeling well in general. but get together, let me know what you decide , and we'll take it from there. i really hope that someone or, i hope, more can meet me then. i really want to make some local friends, femme and butch. if not then, then let's decide on a different time. my only time constraint is my housemate's work schedule, as she's my wheels. but she's really nice about trying to get me to meet you, and i think you'll like her, too. she doesn't get the B/f dance-i'm the first femme she's ever met.
hope we can do this!

Wolfy, OU is pretty much across the street from the VA, on 13th and Lincoln. Going west down 13th street, there is a small little cafe called Beatnix cafe on the left side of the road, just before you get to Floral and Hardy floral shoppe at 13th and Broadway. It's a neat, inexpensive place to eat. Hope you like it, if you go there.

I just read this

To celebrate the opening night of the 2011 OKC Pride weekend, the Grammy Award-winning trio, The Pointer Sisters, will perform live during an outdoor block party and concert on Friday, June 24. The block party begins at 4:00 p.m. and will conclude with a performance by The Pointer Sisters at 9:30 p.m.

Anyone going to OKC Pride?

I also read that Tulsa Pride is this Sunday

just to let Y/you know, as if Y/you couldn't tell-lol, most of OK is under a HEAT ADVISORY! so don't go out unless Y/you have to do so; stay hydrated, and keep as cool as possible!
this heat is one of the reasons that i am moving back to the mountains (NC or WV). the older i get, the less i can handle 95 degrees and up!
take care E/everyone!

Today I saw on the weather that OKCity and it's surrounding counties got pelted with hard rain and hail. Where is the rain HERE? I must live in a geologically dry area! No rain here in weeks! The neighbor's cows are starving, and the pond is almost dry!

Not a native Okie and college ball kinda bores me. But I do love going to TU games. I know they are a small private school and rarely have a good team but I still love going with my friends. And they play their hearts out every second, can't ask for much more.
I love the NFL. My Steelers!!!! And I love watching Dallas and the Ravens lose!!!!!!!!!!! So this Sunday I'm batting 1000 !!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHA Oh and did I mention I love watching Tony Romo's candyass get drilled into the turf. Such a pussy. Just sayin..... and meaning it.

Hey Jagg, sorry about TU's loss, I know they play their heart out. I think it's unfair the schedule they get sometimes.

LOL, your comment was funny about Tony Romo, Dallas (I can't stand them either!) and the Ravens. I'm not much on the NFL but I'll watch it if nothing else is on, preferrably the St. Louis Rams just becuase the quarterback is Sam Bradford, who was a Sooner quarterback a few years back.

Yes, I have bought a lemon or two in my life...

Hell yes we felt it here in Tulsa. Fri. it woke me from a dead sleep at 0213. My bed was shaking so bad and the house was rattling I thought a bulldozer was trying to knock down the front door. Then last night we just layed down and I heard this rumbling again , loud like a low flying B-1bomber then all the shaking started I didn't think it was ever going to stop, we ran outside. I bet it lasted for a minute or more. All my neighbors were outside too. My 8 yr old neice was sleeping over, was so scared she wanted to sleep outside. haha She said about a half hour later that she was still shaking. So I held her for awhile. It freaked her out.

I think a lake gathering would be great if we could find one we all agree on and we all make the time for it.
I think you have to take into consideration where everyone who would go lives and find a happy middle.
A cookout or potluck along with fishing would be nice.

I went to the last two, I think I might be part of the entertainment...
(I change clothes a lot)

My favorite quote from last fall, "Is that Jay? It walks like Jay."

funny story:
last fall my GF went with me, and she is really shy. During the concert, we went back to our cabin, played the boom box, danced, -lights out - clothing optional- and we laid out on the bed making out... (smiles)

well, she was laying on top of me... I was toplesss (I'm not shy) and a room mate walked in to get something from her bunk... MY GIRL ...shreaked, jumped off of me ...trying to cover herself up...

the FUNNY part --- I was in just my boxer briefs -- she WAS FULLY CLOTHED!

She jumped offf of me... left me exposed ...

I was laughing so hard!!!!

My old band performed at one of the Herland retreats. We had fun, but it was strange. The first night, everyone was drinking and flirting and laughing, but the 2nd night other people arrived, and it was much more serious and PC and just...different. All and all, we had a good time, but I'm not sure how open the "regulars" are to the B/F dynamic.

Herland might be a decent place for everyone to get together. We could have a B/F cabin, I guess. But personally, I tend to like smaller groups. What are y'all's thoughts?

Smaller groups, no cost except getting where we need to be and bringing whatever we agree on.

I suppose getting together outdoors would be dependent on our ever changing weather.

Perhaps we might just find a happy medium between OKC and Tulsa at a restaurant we can spend a couple hours in. It might be easier to pick a date, just saying. I say this not knowing where everyone lives and what would be off a highway that we can all reach in a respectable time frame.

Not everyone likes the great outdoors and I'd hate to think someone wouldn't show because of it.

You know, this may just entice a bunch of us to make it happen.

Are you near OKC or Tulsa because maybe some of us can hitch a ride and share the gas expense of a motor home?

Heck, if we have a grill and bring along basic food for it, it would be wonderful.
Some of us could prepare side dishes and carry them along in coolers.
Everyone can bring what they're drinking.
Just finding a weekend without rain is the trick.
The only downside for me is that I work on Saturdays, so the only days good for me are Friday or Sunday.
An early morning start would be a plus for those wanting to fish.

I'm no good at being the planner, so I'll leave it up to anyone that can get this organized.

I prefer the outdoor setting as well. Getting a group of people to agree on a restaurant is not easy, and you're kind of limited to talking to the few people that sit near you. We live in Oklahoma, most of us are used to being in the great outdoors, even if we prefer the city life. The water is beautiful, whether or not you fish, those who don't can always picnic nearby.

And any femmes can rest assured I will have almost anything they should need to survive in the wilderness inside my purse. :-)

I saw a tornado from my porch when I lived in Pawnee.
It was awesome to see it, but it touched down on the outskirts of town.

I watched another one when I lived in Stillwater.
It went right up RR51, heading to Tulsa and never stopped.
Good thing because I was 4 blocks from that one.

Perhaps you'll be close enough and we could share a meal somewhere.

Potlucks are always good, as long as I can bring something that won't spoil on the drive over.

And do I really have to choose between fishing and not-fishing? What if I want to do both? (of course, I would need to impose on someone there to lend me a rod and reel for my fishing, as all of mine are still down in FL)

As long as you'll use a closed face reel, I'll bring everything you need to fish.
I'm not sure what a fishing license costs, I don't even have mine yet, but will before I go fishing.
Although, if in the afternoon, not sure fishing will be great, but I'm good with just hanging out, too.

We were looking for a place between Tusla/OKC and wherever everyone else lives.

Closed face reels work just fine, thank you Sir! In FL, I have a couple of smaller "lake fishing" rods, and one big-assed ocean fishing rod. That was great for pier fishing, or to take out on a boat. Unfortunately, I never got to use that one. :(

Ummm... muddy brown snake infested??? Will I sound like too much of a girly-girl if I let out a huge "Eeeuuuwwww!!!"

Reminds me of when I lived in the Sanford FL area, really close to lake Jessup. That lake had more alligators in it than anywhere else in the world, per square mile. Lake Jessup fed right into Lake Monroe, which I lived next to. Have to say, I did have some whoppers of nightmares thinking about things crawling their way out of those lakes.

Does anyone oppose Lake Eufala? It's an hour or so south of Tulsa, and it's about 2 hours east of OKC. I know there's a State Park out there, in Checotah I think. There's also lodging from what I remember.

There's also Keystone State Park, which is only about an hour and a half from OKC, and about 30 min from Tulsa. I don't think the fishing is so great there, but it's a very convenient location, and they have a little meeting building I might be able to rent for a discount.

JAGG, we are talking about the first Sunday in June from what I gather. Is everyone cool with that? APG, you're welcome to crash on my couch in Tulsa if you'd like to come down the night before. I have a brand new oven you're welcome to use as well for prepping your snackies. :-)

My boss recommended Chickasaw National Recreation Area. She said it had something for everyone and thought we'd all enjoy it. So, does anyone know this place? The way she described this place to me, made me want to pack my bags and spend the summer there, lol. I'm not sure where it is or how long it would take us to get there.

I haven't had a chance to google it and see where it was. I suppose 3 hours sucks unless you're camping for the weekend there.

I'm good with anywhere except it would be much nicer to be able to car pool with another if travel takes a couple hours.

It would be nice if we could come up with a place that's about 60-90 minutes of driving time for any of us. Check out the website, and let me know what you think. They have a pavilion with water and electric, and plenty of fishing spots around the lake. I thought of this place because I've been to a retreat nearby at St. Crispins, which was beautiful, but I have never been to the lake.

If you're willing to drive 2 hours from Tulsa, you might already come to OKC and Lake Overholser.
Should we get out of towners that want to come and spend a weekend, there is a Motel 6 nearby that is not to old and has a swimming pool, decently priced. It may be an easier way to draw others to OK this way.

I think we could still have adult conversation and have children there.

When I did Wichita, kids were welcome and I brought the boy child then (18 and adult, now living in another state near his mom). He spent his time fishing until he had a fish so big on his line, it snapped his pole and he lost it.

So, I'm good with or without children there. After all, I am a big kid myself, most days. Too bad the adult has to come out in me to go to work, lol.

If anyone is not good with this day, please post and let us know what works for you.

If you're coming from a neighboring state and would like to come up on Saturday, I know an inexpensive motel located in a great area and not real far from the lake.

The fishing license for a non-resident in oklahoma is $35.00 for 6 days. They do not sell 1 or 3 days license.
Also, if we go to a city lake there is an additional permit required. Im not sure about the cost though. The person that i talked to at the OK wildlife said that these permits should be sold at the lake.
I hope this information is helpful.

Anyone that wants to fish can. It's just that you need a permit in the city along with your fishing license.
Some of us were trying to get out of towners to join in and this was the best I could come up with tio include them.
As always, open to any and all suggestions.

Wolfy, I am just really excited about heading out there, I am so looking forward to seeing you again, and meeting others I haven't met yet!

The fishing thing would have been really nice, but the cost and hassle of getting a license (or two!) isn't really as appealing to me as just hanging with everyone.

Now I know Kerrie talked about camping.... I am more of a motel-with-a-swimming-pool-kinda girl myself. Just sayin', those that might want to camp, we can hang by the campfire a bit, but when it is time to hit the hay, a nice soft bed is in my future!

Can I get a count of people that are good for the first weekend in June in OKC at Lake Overholser?

I don't like organizing, so I won't be asking after this post.

I just wanted to be able to accommodate people that may want to come from other states.

Anyone wanting to come, feel free to add your name.
We'll figure out who wants to bring what once we know who'll be coming.

This will be the first Sunday in June at Lake Overholser in OKC
I'm sure we'll probably have to have a place to meet, so we can all make sure we're at the same place at the lake unless someone has a better idea.

For those wanting to come the day before, this Motel 6 has a pool and is pet friendly. I'm betting anyone taking a room on Saturday, you'll get visitors to hang by the pool and share a meal in the area. I know there's an outlet mall just up I-40 a few miles and plenty places to eat.

and... I'll ask again is this a females only event?
are family/friends (suportive to GLBT) also welcome?

I'll leave it up to others, but for me personally, I don't care as long as you keep it to GLBT and kids if you have them.

I'd really like to meet others from this site that I'd never met before, so that's most important to me.

No and I was hoping maybe we could have a meeting place and follow each other to the lake.
I could check it out before hand, but it wouldn't help if someone already has the spot I scope out.
I still think June will be way too hot to be sitting in the sun and would have liked to do this in May.
Sadly everyone seems to be too busy in May.

A canopy, well if that doesn't bring everyone out that day, then nothing will.
I wonder if part of the lake has a swimming area.
I still need to get a fishing license and city permit, but think I'll wait until I get to the lake for that.

On another note, does everyone know they can fish for free on Mothers Day, (no license required)?

If everyone brings their own drinks/food plus a little to share, I will have a huge ice chest (almost covers a tailgate) full of ice. Thars my thing I take it everywhere.

As I remember there is a paved road the follows the lake all the way around, so I can bring a Tpost with balloons to serve as a marker of our group, how does that sound?

-----

I was just told that.. On the west side of the lake there is a pavillion, with a childs play area. that will works well for a meet up location, and I am told the road does indeed circle the lake.

permits are purchaced at the OCPD station, at the extreme east end the lake, north of the dam. I am told there are over night permits. We are remembering that glass contaners are not allowed . (not really sure).

there is no swimming at the lake.

and here is a link for more details,

I think the child's play area would be a great meet up place. Now all we have to do is decide on a time? I think bringing our own food with some to share is like potluck, yes? I do believe everyone should bring what they're drinking unless it's water and I'll pick up a 24 pack of it at work to share.

Then come on Saturday, hit the Pride festivities with us early in the day, then head back mid afternoon, you would get back in plenty of time to get to bed early. That way, you could spend time with all of us central AR peeps. I know we could find a place for you to crash here! (hey, I have a couch that is plenty comfy!)

I will be stopping by the Conway Pride on Sunday, but good thing I decided to stay close to home this weekend for that, as I am flying out to CA at the butt-crack of Monday for business. I would not have been able to come to OK this weekend anyway. So I am surely hoping for a raincheck!!
