Enigma....what a wonderful thread.
I would love to add to it with the following picture and writing I recently found. I also want to make sure that I give the proper attribution to the author and site where this is posted. Their name is Robin and the site is: http://open.salon.com/blog/robin_sneed/2009/04/17/the_butch-femme_mystique

I do not know the answers to the intellectual questions about who I am
I cannot be any other person
I have labels
Sometimes, I am called a soft butch
Lesbian
Dyke
In other moments
I am called someone who is destroying the fabric of our nation
On the inside
I am a boy who is in love with a girl
Just
that
human

Wow to the video
There is nothing more beautiful, amazing, dynamic, sensual, breathtaking, stunning, attractive, drop dead gorgeous than ...female masculinity.
Thank you to all who posses that and who enlighten and transfer that energy into a wonderful species of life.

I'd like to see something like this with a wider cross-section of ages. I mean, nobody in those videos could have been older than 25. Hot older people need to represent and stuff!
(Although, you know the one with the mohawk close to the end? I would like to teach that one a thing or two about a thing or two. And then shrink 'em down for handy depositing in my handbag. For whenever I need a snack. Sorry, was that creepy of me?)

I LOVE images of female mascullinity, and the pictured individuals are fab. For myself, I prefer fewer piercings, especially in the mouth and tongue area.
I think the topless pics are particularly interesting. The poses which support the aura of masculinity, are sur prisfoxesing and delightful to say the least.
These pics so far do focus on a single age and class (style even )and like some others I am really looking forward to seeing images of silver foxes.
Nat the Ciara video you posted is astonishing in its intensity and multiplicity of female masculine images. I loved, loved loved it. It encouraged me to go to youtube looking for more Ciara. I found this fantastic video by Ciara and LaLa (Vasquez) in support of gay teens.

I'm not following this, what exactly is offensive?
I didn't find anything offensive either. As one of the "older" butches, it does my heart good to see such appreciation for female masculinity. It also makes me a bit nostalgic for the days when I felt that strong in my body.
I love the generation following us who are bringing visibility to the shadows we have cast.

If a Butch has plaster, mud and sawdust on his clothes then he knows how to wash it all out..Do you know why he knows how to wash it out.???. Because his Mommy showed him how to do it..My Mom showed me a long time ago..I have clean looking stained Levis..If you could imagine what that looks like..

Her other nick name was Tuffy. There is a book about her life. She also bought her very own island in the carribean.

I don't know if Sinclair intends to revisit this project. She's been really busy with her writing career here in NYC. She recently put together a butch/femme erotica compilation. I'll ask her about it the next time I run into her.

Judith/Jack Halberstam, 2011 Judith Halberstam, also Jack Halberstam, (born 15 December 1961) is Professor of English and Director of The Center for Feminist Research at University of Southern California. Halberstam was an Associate Professor in the Department of Literature at the University of California at San Diego before working at USC. She (also sometimes using male pronouns) has made contributions as a gender and queer theorist and author.
Halberstam primarily focuses on the topics of tomboys and female masculinity and has published a book titled after the concept. In this work, she famously discusses a common by-product of gender binarism, termed "the bathroom problem". This outlines the dangerous and awkward dilemma of a perceived gender deviant's justification of presence in a gender-policed zone, such as a public bathroom, and the identity implications of "passing" therein.
Halberstam earned her BA with a major in English, at the University of California at Berkeley in 1985. She received her MA from the University of Minnesota in 1989, and her PhD from the same school in 1991.
The Queer Art of Failure argues that failure can be productive, a way of critiquing capitalism and heteronormativity. Using examples from popular culture, like Pixar animated films, Halberstam explores alternatives to individualism and conformity. In a Queer Time and Place: Transgender Bodies, Subcultural Lives, looks at queer subculture and proposes a conception of time and space independent of the influence of normative heterosexual/familial lifestyle. Halberstam has been nominated three times for Lambda Literary Awards, twice for her most widely-known non-fiction book, Female Masculinity. She coedits with Lisa Lowe, "Perverse Modernities," a book series with Duke University Press.

I just always thought that she was gay like me, even though I was just a child. I didnt get her music. But in her photos she always seemed to be screaming, "F-You"!:thefinger: To the world, And I loved that.:poc-biggrin:

Holy Mother of Maude as much as I admire her in so many different ways now, I would have had a had time resisting shamelessly throwing myself at her back then - even though at the time this pic was taken in '98 she was 26 and I was 39. Still... :::fanning mysel::: whew.
Oh, hell, who am I kidding: given the chance I'd still probably humiliate myself over her.

Found this and wanted to pass it along :)
"What is attractive about a butch lesbian?"
Ooh, what a delightful question. I love everything about butch women, and I always have. More feminine girls just don't do anything for me sexually- I can objectively admire their beauty and sexiness, but in the end, it's when I see a woman who is androgynous, boyish, or plain out manly, my heart starts to pitter-patter. So let me sing an ode to butches here, because far too often all I see is "Eww, yuck, I like my women to look like women!", and that's so sad.
I love butch hair. I like the way the women who wear it- whether it's short or long- use their hair in a completely different way than do feminine women- they don't flip it or toss it or curl it around their fingers, but sometimes they run their hands through it that special way. I love the way short hair looks so distinguished on a strong face that would otherwise be hidden by length, and I love the way a shaved butch head both reveals a butch's masculinity in attitude, and femininity in the face and head that emerge.
I love butch faces. I love the androgynous and tomboyish faces that are beautiful, elvish, almost- the girls who could be extraordinarily beautiful in femme drag. But more than that I love the butch faces that can't do that- that look ridiculous when painted up and framed by a wig. I love strong, square jaws that are firmly held rather than slack. I love high foreheads and thick brows that other people would probably want to pluck and shape. I love butch eyes, that are always so extraordinary. Not hidden by tons of makeup or weighted down with the way femme women often look away, it's like looking into their souls. I love the way a butch speaks with her eyes- those direct stares that say "I love you." or make you break out in a hot flush from across the room. I love butch mouths, which are the ultimate combination: soft and sensuous girl lips that don't act like girl lips- no pouting or worried thinning or other 'femme' signs.
I love butch bodies, every way they come. I like the way that the butch female form is somehow hidden in its clothing- from the T-shirt and jeans to the sharpest cut suit, you can always tell it's there, in the hips, the luscious curve of breast, but it's not on display the way femme clothing screams "boobs here! butt here!". I love muscles on a woman's body, more than the average sporty femme should have, bulging, tensing. I love butches who don't shave their legs or their armpits, who own the hair on their body, and how though it's long, most people don't realize it's downy soft, too, a beautiful covering. I love butch boobs, because they are such a prize, alternatively hated and ignored by their owners. I love little butch tts and big butch tts- I love the shape they make on a boxy body and I adore the juxtaposition of hard muscle, soft breast. I love to see a butch unwind her binding and the breasts to spill out like presents, and then get wrapped up again for the world, a secret only I've had access to. I love butch legs and torsos- they are so often trunk-like, solid. Even when they're scrawny, they have a centeredness, a strength. Muscled butch legs, smooth or hairy, get me every time. I love the way so many butches adorn their bodies, bodies that aren't supposed to be, but get decorated anyways- butch piercings and tattoos- a ring around a bicep makes me melt. I love the way butches smell- not cloyingly, sickeningly sweet like femmes' perfume or other body scents, but clean, fresh, sometimes musky and sour with cologne, but always different, always, somehow, natural.
I love butch fashion- I am quite simply and utterly delighted by the way women wear what's regarded as men's clothing. For anyone who's ever thought that butches are lazy dressers, I want to point out the woman who looks so utterly dashing in her suit and tie, or just a dress shirt and slacks, the boi who is able to rock a Justin Timberlake look, right down to the fedora, who makes a wifebeater look as tasty as it can be, who make men in theirs look sallowly concave at the chest. I love the studded belts that punk butches wear, the boys jeans that fit off-kilter around their hips just enough. I cannot begin to explain the heat it generates to see a butch in boxers, or better yet, boxer-briefs or boy's underwear, those legs branching up to the three-pronged cut, the flap lying flat and empty, or maybe bulging with a packer. I love the fact that nearly every butch owns a pair of boots, solid, thundering boots that look so army powerful and commanding when they wear them. I love a woman in men's clothing.
I love the way butches act. I love the particular way a butch woman acts "like a man", but with a woman's way- gentlemanly ettiquette and all. I don't know how to describe that it's not hardly even the butch qualities (sitting wide-legged and spread out, standing tall and firm), but rather how comfortable and natural she is being that way that makes it so good. I love the way butches are playful and funny but not coy or manipulative- I love their straight-forwardness. I love that "bulldagger swagger" so full of confidence and seriousness, that peacock strut. I love the way butches feel a masculine sense of obligation and duty and protection, but it doesn't translate into male ego. My heart squeezes at the way butches deal with their emotions- sometimes hiding it, swallowing it down, and that facade of pride and bravado. I love the way butches act- so confident, so gentlemanly, so tough. I love butch voices- the ones that are pitched too low, but refuse to take on the sort of drawl that would turn it into a throaty, sultry femme voice. I love the way butches can navigate the world- not in competition with men, but buddies and friends, and yet slide into women's land and have that identity, too.
I love the way butches have sex- how they know just what to do, and want to do it so very badly. I love the way butches use their hands like sex organs for delicate handlings. I love the outline of a strap-on contained in jeans or underwear. I love butches who can orgasm by jerking off their silicone c*cks, whose metaphysical erections are so strong in their minds that the touch practically translates. I absolutely am addicted to the faces of butch pleasure- the eyes rolling back in the head, the body shudders, the complete way a feminine orgasm rolls through a butch body, made masculine by it. I love butches who top but more I love butches who bottom or do both- I am drawn to butch women who know that being touched and penetrated and pleasured doesn't invalidate her butchness, doesn't feminize her, doesn't equal submission. I love butches who are into BDSM, who look fantastic in leather and who take slow, careful deliberation in their acts, who wear that power like an easy mantle. I love butches who love other butches as well as femmes- those girls who know the true pleasures of same-sex relations, when the sameness is in two butch bodies banging together, mirror images, same intense ferocity and heat.
But perhaps most of all, I love butches for who they are in this world. My heart aches and yearns for the strength I feel from them, how every day they walk the world looking the way they do and basically inviting- and then bearing- attacks for not giving up and conforming to feminine ideals. I love them for being who they are, and not letting anyone tell them that women do not have crew cuts, or women don't wear ties, or women must be this, or must be that.
Simply put, I am in love and lust with butches, and I don't care if other people aren't (you can't control what you like), but I want them to understand that butches can be- and are- desirable. Just a few quotes to close up:
" . . . a butch is someone who has taken on the best gendered characteristics of both woman and man, left a lot of the stuff born of misogyny and heterosexism behind, and walked forward into the world without apology." - S. Bear Bergman, "Butch Is a Noun"

Brigid, thank you so much for the piece that you posted. It is so well-written and perfectly describes why my heart, soul and body is attracted to lesbian/dyke butches.
This excerpt from your post captures it best:

:kissy:
This really hit home for me on some of the things we face day to day as it is impossible to hide who I am not that I would want to, I am who I was born to be and I am proud and standing tall I have delt with this just being one of the facts of life lol unti my facial hair started comming in big time and I knew this was comming not from T or meds just what I have always had and shaving everyday and it has started to work quite well.
This really hit at a good time for me I feel appreciated and loved
Thank You so very much to all the beautiful feminine woman
I Love All of you

Wow...what an amazing thread. The photos are fabulous, especially the old ones that give a real sense of butch/femme history. Every day's a good day to celebrate butch lesbians and I think I've just fallen in love with Ivan Coyote. Phew...hot or what?
I'm a newbie here and wanted to say thanks to Enigma for starting this thread and thanks to you all for creating this community. It looks like I'm going to have a lot of fun here. :sparklyheart:

Aside from the female Masculinity aspect the image portrays. What I also loved about it was - particularly for that time, it reminded women of the potential to be/do anything.
I know history has many other examples of women rebelling against social norms and this is not to dishonour those who came before.

See, now I see Lady GaGa's alter ego, Jo Calderone, as a progressive way of introducing transgender into mainstream media. People who are not in the GLBT community don't have much awareness/exposure to fluid sexuality and I applaud Lady GaGa for providing exposure. To me, attention-getting isn't a bisexual woman who has obvious different-gender leanings but Katy Perry singing about how she kissed a girl and she liked it when she's never done any such thing. Just my two cents. ;)

I disagree. Lady Gaga is not a trans man and she is not, by all accounts, bisexual. She has indicated herself she is hetero. A little experimenting with women - which she also has indicated does not satisfy her as relationships with men do - does not a bisexual make. Also "Jo Calderone's" gross, sexist behaviour isn't exactly a glowing recommendation for maleness, whether cis or trans. I think Gaga's entire image and everything she does is false and designed for publicity. She also repeatedly engages in racist behaviour. Having said all that, I'm not on this forum to get into heavy wars about shit to be honest so I'll leave it at that.

I'm a woman who models men's clothes. But this isn't about gender
My responsibility is to kids who might feel shame – might be ostracised from society – just for being different
~Casey Legler
theguardian.com, Friday 1 November 2013 11.16 EDT
I am a model. I model men's clothes. The biological roulette made me female. I was the first woman to be signed to the men's board at Ford Models.
I was invited earlier this week to speak at a conference for business executives at a "trend school" – the topic: gender. I declined – not for lack of desire to share my experience, strength and hope in some helpful way. But I was rather offended by the notion of being so removed from reality as to require a school for trends, and repulsed at the blatant attempt to co-opt and commodify culture for business profit over participation and engagement with it. I also knew that there would be no room for me to break the news: this is not about gender.
So, corporate America, this article is for you.
The contemporary cultural landscape supports a larger interpretation than the one we currently have, of female-masculinity and masculine-femininity. To believe otherwise is to be deceived by a myopic view which is influenced by capitalist gain and profit.
The first thing I want to get out of the way is to ask you to look at this list: Gertrude Stein, Greta Garbo, Jenny Shimizu, Tilda Swinton, Jack Halberstam, Stella Tennant, Judith Butler, Erika Linder … it goes on. If you do not know who everyone on the list is, go look them up, your life will be larger for it. You should, after that, realise that this is not a question of "trend". There is a historical tradition you should know about and it is certainly not about gender. It is about being fierce.
The cultural context further supports this wider angled discourse on the acceptance of difference (or lack thereof) beyond the specifics of female-masculinity and masculine-feminity and posits the isolated focus on gender as incorrect. Russia, Edith Windsor and Bethann Hardison are three examples – the first being a terrifying contemporary example of institutionalised homophobia and homogeneity; the second, our own attempt here in the US to de-institutionalise homophobia via gay marriage; and the last being a fashion legend calling into question the enduring racism within fashion. The fashion industry is on its way to being the better for it.
We are only too familiar with the mainstream's difficulty in celebrating difference (when it's not being entirely destructive to it). Corporations and the traditional media have not yet learned how to resolve this: in the public discourse the celebration is often sanitised and white-washed (sometimes literally) for profit – and by this I do mean corporate profit.
And why should you care about this? Because we have in our societies children and teenagers and we are responsible for their wellbeing. This is on us. And why do I specifically care about this? Why am I bothering to write this? Because I'm gay. I'm butch. I'm a woman. I'm queer. I'm 36. I'm 6ft 2in. And caring for "otherness" matters to me. Gay youth is still terrorised for being different in some parts of the world – Russia is a horrifying example of this. But look, too, at what still happens here in the US. Children are made to feel shame, they are made to feel ugly, they are ostracised and bullied, or worse – and here in New York I see them on the streets – 40% of homeless youth are LGBTQI identified.
If images of me out there in the world make it that much easier for another kid, and the kids around them or their parents, to get on with the more important business of figuring out who they are and how they can uniquely contribute to the stream of life, then my job is done. The clincher: while unique in my contribution, I am not alone in expanding the landscape – Brittney Griner, JD Samson, Venus X, A$AP Rocky, OFWGKTA – are all examples of non-conformity and also of excellence.
This is about making space, making room and making things better. To limit this conversation to the (albeit salacious) red herring of gender is dangerous, careless and nothing short of ignorant – it takes for granted the intelligence and wellbeing of our communities (offering only an uneducated, uninteresting and sensationalist conversation to boot). It shames those who are gender-conformative and perpetuates a construct of homogeneity and belonging that is nothing short of destructive for our youth. It offers a false sense of privilege and ignorance to those who "fit" the norm (or trend) while potentially destroying those who don't and ignoring those who are able to survive outside of it.
I will not let this become just the other side to the same coin of oppression, a false emancipation at the cost of others.
This is too important and deserves closer examination and care. Lives depend on it.

She's a self identified female athlete, artist, and fashion model who works as a male model. Yes, she's very handsome.

BUTCH (http://megallenstudio.com/butch/) is a documentary portrait project and exploration of the butch aesthetic, identity and presentation of female masculinity as it stands in 2013.
It is a celebration of those who choose to exist and identify outside of the binary; who still get he’d and she’d differently throughout the day; who get called-out in bathrooms and eyed suspiciously at the airport; who have invented names for themselves as parents because “Mom” nor “Dad” feels quite right; and who will generally expect that stare from the gender police trying to figure out if they are “a boy or a girl”. It is an homage to the bull-daggers and female husbands before me, and to the young studs, gender queers, and bois who continue to bloom into the present.

Since some of the femmes here had been asking for photos of older butches, I went looking for them. I know I've seen a few more like me-over 50-but except for one or two, I can't find them at the moment.
So, here is what I did find. Including one or two personal heroes. All of these are over 35, some older than that and a few are older photos from the 1940's/1950's or earlier. So at least you are getting older generation butches.
1)Well fuck. Maybe I wont. The photos are on my computer and this thing wants only a url. Is there a way around that?

From a spiffy calendar done a few years back by a Brooklyn non-profit, to benefit a local queer youth shelter. Remakes of old dyke paperback covers, using local queers. These two are a for-reals couple, raising a family together.

Butch femme couple at Mona's, an old dyke/queer bar. I think it was in NYC, but I'd have to look it up. Taken sometime in the 1950's.

Okay just found this one online. I'd never seen this one before. I think it's from the 1960's.
The website apparently is a collection of essays. I'm going to check it out myself eventually. In the meantime, here is the site if you want to look the essays up yourself. sitemaker dot umich dot edu forward slash lesbianhistories forward slash Hopefully that will get you to the right spot.
And the photo...

Okay, gonna post a couple of photos here of Leslie Feinberg, a personal hero of mine.
This is a still from the documentary 'Outlaw' which you will only see if you can catch it as a film festival. No folks, it's not for sale to individuals. More's the pity.

And I'm really impressed, not just by the quality of her photographs, but also by the fact that she's familiar with at least SOME 1st generation lesbian photographers. VERY cool. Tee Corrine the community lost in, I think it was 2004?-from cancer. Gone too soon. Honey Lee is still around, still taking photos and still wont show them outside the SF community. Or, sometimes, her fb page, though those are rare and not the same kind of sex radical work she used to do.
