In 1926 Vogue called Chanel's Little Black Dress (LBD) the "Ford" of a woman's wardrobe. Every woman has a LBD. If she doesn't she should.

My favorite period store for Victorian Era attire - the site has the images locked, so I can't post some of them.. phooey! There is a store in the South Bay Area, so I can actually go and try things on! I, oh, so want the brocade tailcoat!

I just found an entire trunk full of Life & Look mags that were my late sister's from the 50's &
60's! Talk about a mid-century fashion treasure chest for both women and men! I think I should have a mid-century dinner party so friends can just sit and look at these!

I really love the costuming in this movie - especially the men's and George Sand's (Judy Davis's) more masculine clothing. (1840ish Paris)

I cut off all my curls about two weeks ago. I cried and cried. I realized as I looked at 1950's fashion and Hollywood pictures that the sophistication level of women who mostly had bobbed hair. Charming, intelligent and magnetic women. So when the last person who saw me (after not seeing me for months) saw my bobbed hair and said, "It is lovely. Very sophisticated." I had to smile.

I forget that sultry women Sophia, Ava, Leslie, Audrey, Eartha and many more women had that look...

I am always looking to add to my small collection of cocktail dresses ...

I have a variety of little black dresses (a few in cerulean blue or deep purples, too) - they range from sleeveless, plunging V-necklines to strapless to long-sleeved (more like 3/4 length sleeves) vintage styled dresses of the late 50s to 60s era dress styles.

Here's a classic black cocktail dress that might look nice on me:

More than likely though, I'd probably have to make my own pattern and play with the ruffling on the neckline a bit. I'd change the type of fabric too - I like fabrics that feel stetchy-snuggly on my body. And, instead of the waistline (as shown in the photo), I'd probably make it an empire waistline and drop the neckline a bit, so it was more of a "vee" and adjust the ruffling - maybe use chiffon for the ruffling???

I have short arms, so I love the 3/4 sleeves on shirts and dresses.

Lovely, that dress is very pretty! I'd have to have an a-line though I do love the color. It'd make my Washington white skin glow.

Isadora? Do you like to wear long-sleeved gloves too? Those are really hard to find nowadays! I would love to have a black pair of them!!! Plus, I have been keeping a watch out for a black stole (<~ did I spell that right?) ... I would like one of those too, if I could find one!

I live in the Bay Area. Drag Queen heaven. I am lucky I can find gloves at The Piedmont in the Haight and Cliff's in the Castro. I have found them on line, too. Look for opera gloves on line. I love them. I wear satin gloves a lot. It is always colder in the evenings in the Bay Area. Keeps my hands warm.

Midnight Blue, a waistline, oodles of sprawling fabric below the waist!

Maybe some silvery sparkly-threads in the fabric, as well.

I totally love that dress in the photo and would want the dress to basically be of the same design! I love the sweetheart neckline the most!

I am in a style funk right now. I don't know which direction to go, which is one of the reasons I was looking at fashion. It's always something I enjoy. I like interesting fabrics, off-beat styles. I am occassionally enamoured of something that is ugly and pretty at the same time. I like attempting to pull off things that are hard to pull off. I enjoy being understatedly over the top, and I enjoy being a bit silly with my wardrobe. I am considering becoming a hat person because I always love hats but then don't wear them. They are one of the first things I go to in an antique shop. I like being different and I like variety. I live Johnny weir's style, because he doesn't mind being different and he has no fear about dressing creatively. I have an entirely different thing going on, but seeing his clothing choices and the way he carries himself just makes me super happy.

What about y'all? Do you look up to any fashion icons? If you had to describe your personal style, what would it be? :)

I have good fashion taste but it doesn't seem to translate well into the actual clothing I purchase. If I felt more comfortable with my body and had the $$$, I'd wear a lot of Betsey Johnson. Her style is very similar to my personality.

Jackie's stunning, gorgeous, to-die-for, can't-get-enough-of-it wedding dress was designed by................

Anne Lowe.

:)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/15/Jacqueline_Bouvier_Kennedy_Onassis2.jpg/250px-Jacqueline_Bouvier_Kennedy_Onassis2.jpg

Anne Lowe (born Anne Cole Lowe, 1898-1981) was an African American fashion designer who designed the wedding dress for Jacqueline Bouvier when she married John F. Kennedy.

She was born in Clayton, Alabama[1] the great granddaughter of a slave and plantation owner[2]

She married in 1912 at age 14 and enrolled in a fashion school in New York City in 1917. After graduation she opened a salon in Tampa, Florida before returning to New York in 1928 where she worked on commission for stores such as Chez Sonia. In 1946 she designed the dress that Olivia de Havilland wore to accept the Academy Award for Best Actress for To Each His Own (film) -- although the name on the dress was Sonia Rosenberg.[2]

She designed for various upper crust New Yorkers including the ivory-silk-taffeta dress for Jackie in 1953.

She worked her later years at Saks Fifth Avenue where she was featured in a 1960 advertisement.[2]

Felled by glaucoma she lost an eye but continued to design through the 1960 for Madeline Couture and briefly operated Ann Lowe Originals on Madison Avenue in New York.

I keep peeking in here, contemplating. I am a fashionista at times depending on my budget. Like Nat my style is in flux at the moment. I love French and Italian fashion, and prefer 1 or 2 really nice pieces to many of less quality. Adore Leather Jackets and collect them especially avant garde, or edgy pieces, that make a statement. And handbags, sigh.

Also, beautiful Vintage pieces, suits, and especially lingerie. I collect vintage patterns, and love the elegance of the lines and cuts, sweeping skirts. I would love to collect Peignoir sets, that's on my list, and silk pieces. Real silk slips. I heard an old Hollywood Director comment that he always bought real silk slips for his stars, because it changed the way they moved, that undercurrent of sensuality that silk on bare skin calls to, yum. This is a fun thread, I love seeing what everyone likes. I want that black carved screen above, for my Bedroom! Love Betsy, especially her Handbags. Isabella Fiore, is my favorite handbag designer. I am particularity fond of this dress.......

I believe you don't have to buy designer to dress designer. I won't wear Anything that has a designer name on it unless they are paying Me to advertise for them. Just sayin'

I believe that being stylish is not having to spend a lot on of money on clothes. I have several really good pieces but I can't afford designer clothes.

Nat, you know what? I think I go through phases where I think I know what's stylish (in broad terms) and what I think might look good on me; and sometimes where nothing but a timeless, classic notion of style - appeals to me. I will have to look up who you are talking about - I have no idea who he is (Johnny Weir).

Isadora? I used buy clothes made by women in sewing collectives. They aren't well known designers but they do piecework (they contract out for a season and author a complete line); not like YSL or Gucci or other well known designer brands. I don't think it's in business anymore, but do you (or anyone) remember the Weekenders clothing line? The clothesline was made by various women from all over and when you bought something from them, it was supporting them and not some big corporation. One of my close friends was a 'consultant' of sorts and I would always go to her latest trunk show and see the latest styles. I like the clothes I have bought from them over the years - I liked it alot because it was an affordable investment and seemed to help others. It's hard to find great clothes at an affordable price and have them fit you properly too - I have a nice figure but not everything will look right on me either. I liked that black dress you found - it's a very pretty dress!

*hehe* Thanks Enigma and Nat! (another member nudged me too, ty!)

I'm glad you both left a post here about Anne Lowe designing JK's wedding gown... me not remembering might be a bit adhd as well - I knew, yet I didn't know - I couldn't remember her name, plus for some reason, I was a bit confused about the gown because I have a cloudy memory of a Rose Kennedy article that I read recently this past winter - which mentioned something about a wedding gown. Thanks for leaving post about Anne Lowe!

Would you believe that it's still very cold here and I have yet to wear anything that you would ordinarily wear during the late spring, early summer months???

I think you are correct - it appears to be a scarf to me too! The earrings are what drew me into the photo; I once bought brass earrings in NYC and when I wore them, the weight of them made the ear peircings in my ears larger and irritated my skin - much like what you see here - the redness in the her earlobes.... The scarf is beautiful, Nat!

I'm finally understanding the femme fascination with shoes...... Hell, I drool over certain men's and unisex designers.....

I was walking with a femme friend at the dog park the other day and we were having some discussion about the cost of something that seemed outrageous. And she said... I could buy over a dozen pairs of shoes with that! I cracked up. I was thinking that I could buy that Valentini tux!!!

Smacking myself on the head!! Yo, do-do-bird!!

I have always liked clothes. But, have to say that my joy about clothing has risen 10-fold since finding my butch identity more clearly and knowing new femmes!!!

Okay so I am a false eyelash efficianato and actually have owned those exact eyelashs lol ! I just love the look of false eyelashes and did you know they have been used in hollywood for decades? Yup Audrey Hepburn sported false eyelashes along with most of the icons of that era!

So back to your question, the feather ones can sometimes be found at Sephoras, they carry many different brands and styles. However, the only time I have found them in abundance (the feather ones) is at halloween in Walmart. NO KIDDING! They also carry 'regular' ones year round, I suggest getting the black eyelash glue instead of the clear (which is actually white).

Okay so that is my little rant lol can you tell I get excited about eyelashes???

I want to stop big business in the worst way and it would seem that the only way to do it, is to give my hard earned money to small business practitioners.

i have no sense of fashion at all. When i was younger, i tried occasionally, and was mostly an epic fail at it. These days, i am so over trying to be fashionable, so i go for comfort and what makes me feel pretty.

Love the boho look, peasant skirts, tunics, etc.

i LOVE funky purses/bags! And socks. And mary jane shoes.
http://shoepsycho.com/shoes/moxiepix/b1_20.jpg

These are my favorite pair of shoes!

i think i'm stuck in a "dressing too young for your age" phase of my life because i've always been fat and when i was in school there was no Torrid or Lane Bryant. i wore what my mama picked out for me, which were usually knit pull-on pants in every pastel color known to man, bought at Sears (with the matching tops in loud flower prints, of course).

rav?

those "hello kitty" shoes are so adorable!
I so agree with you on needing clothes that fit comfortably;
allowing a person to feel stylish!

I favor keeping a variety of choice. Re (Boho): I have lots of summer broomstick dresses - dresses made out of that material that's crinkly-wrinkly and sets of 'gaucho-like' pants and cotton, slinky Tees to go with them.

Same for shoes: I like having lots of different kinds of shoes - flip flops, Berk's, dressy sandals, classic pumps, Mary Jane's, kitten heels, crocs, jogging shoes, sneakers (keds), ourtageously styled stilettos - and of course - slips, socks, garters & stockings!

Thanks for sharing about your style preferences today! I enjoyed learning more about you!

Finding shoes for my two sons was always a challenge (not to even mention clothes!). It seems that I never had enough money ever (when they were growing up - they seemed to physically change with every season possible) to afford them the best shoes because shoes to fit their feet were always hard to find. My eldest son's shoe size, last I knew, was a mens 15E (irregular wide width) and Eddie wears a mens 14R (regular width) - both of my sons are well over the 6' mark.

http://www.guardianoffers.co.uk/mall/GOBVGAirflo/customerimages/products/BV01.jpg

The shoes above are made by hand, leather and I would guess, very expensive. I like this look in shoes (I think this is a very nice mens style).

That's too funny you mention this because when I was looking at all the aprons, the first thought that came to me is - why where a dress???

*aprons help alot when you just don't have time to get dressed to cook in the kitchen*

hey y'all :)

Has anyone ordered plus sizes from The Pyramid Collection (http://www.pyramidcollection.com/default.asp)? If so, how "true" did you find the sizing to be? i know that different companies size differently, but in general, did you find the sizing to be in the ball park?

Some of their dresses make me drool, but am hesitant to order. Years ago (close to 8 or 9 probably) a friend ordered from them and the 2X was more like a medium, but i've heard through the webs that they've gotten better over the years.

Thanks for any help!

I think I will like it....the skirt is 100% cotton, and right now, it's a little stiff.....I'm thinking of washing it to soften it up a little....the bodice is a slinky knit with some spandex in it....it feels good.

It's a fun little frock, that's for sure!

There's a girl here at the Starbucks with a big white bow on the side of her head like I wore when I was 7 (okay I was more partial to black bows - my gothy tendencies started early though they never fully developed). I've been enjoying seeing the use of fascinators in people's hair - but are bows back now? I am so not ready.

Sometimes it seems like millenials have some sort of 80s infantilization fetish. But then I am afraid I am rather stuck in the 90s and harbor some sort of undying love of the 70s i don't remember - so I have no room to talk.

I haz envy because I haz a small head and can't wear the big bows without looking absolutely, dreadfully ridiculous.

What do you think? BFP Prom dress??

*Possibly*

I dreamed the other night that I won the lottery (fat chance, I know! LOL) and showed up to the bash wearing a sexy black leather & lace dress with all my fav sterling silver jewelry, my jacket zippped just so, and my feet gift wrappped in Jimmy Choo's.

Something like this (if I was going):

I'm about as femme as it gets, but please...I just couldn't do any of these except maybe the tweed and denim. I like that one. But fall victim to male dominated fashion? Not a chance. Do you really think you'd see men in clothes that are painful, barely there and ridiculous just so women would look at them? Not to mention, do you really think men would starve themselves to death to walk that cat walk? I hardly think so.

I don't dress so men will look at me. I dress in clothes I like. And I think fashion design is a type of art. I enjoy it Plus this thread has an element of humor to it - kinda like this video:

It's not frivolous, but I do want to find a new winter coat.
I like this one... maybe I'll be able to find one like it.
I like how it's made of wool, zips and has a draw-string belt
and it looks like it is lined as well as having a hood. Definately,
it looks like it is cozy and warm...

I don't think it's too frivolous, but I would love to have a leather fringe jacket. Maybe in Black, and a bit longer so it falls around my hips and has a leather sash.
