I didn't really see a category for travel here, so I made a place where people might want to share about places they have been to - or have yet to visit!
I haven't traveled much outside the US - I did spend a vacation in Kuai once; it was incredibly beautiful there! And, I've lived in various places on either coast (east or west) or even visited states in the US where the geography of the region takes your breath away!
I'm leaving this photo tonight because I often dream about visiting England and I found this beautiful lake! It's dreamy, yes? Maybe someday, I will travel to England and see all the beautiful architecture in various places and see serene spaces, such as below!

You can't go wrong visiting Big Sur on the California Coastline. I took my sweetheart there for her birthday last year and had a beautiful suite overlooking the cliffs and the ocean. It is an amazing place!
Provincetown is also a great place to go! If you have never been, it is definately worth planning a trip to go. I've been twice and we are going again very soon for our wedding! I'm looking forward to going there again.
And finally, one of my favorite places to go is the Smokey Mountains in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. I've been more times than I can count and I'm hoping to get a trip together for us in the not so distant future. I could visit those mountains every year and never get tired of them!
Happy Travels everyone!

Are you thinking about visiting their wine regions, too???
The French Alps are certainly a place I would love to see first hand!

Definately - about the Big Sur area! I've been there on many ocassion - truly spectacular! I think the closest I ever got to the Smokey Mtn's was when I was very little and we went to see relatives in Arkansas - the Ozarks - I remember seeing a passion play there. Truly beautiful!

After my first summer session class is finished this week, I'm going to the coast for much needed down time (second session starts next week).
Oregon has such a beautiful coastline that I thought I would share a few photos (that I have found online) here...

You've been to some beautiful places! Let's see... I've been to parts of Yellowstone (Jackson Hole and the Tetons), Yosemite (the redwoods are so beautiful), Niagara Falls (years ago) and to the Grand Canyon - when I was a little girl but I don't remember much of it at all. My mother once lived in Roswell, NM when she was a young girl (past President Dwight D. Eisenhower visited her high school) - I've never been to New Mexico but I hear there's lots to see there - like the caverns that you mention!
I'm thinking that your trip to Scotland, Mexico and Kashmir were delightful!

Great thread!!!
One of my best friends and I are planning a trip to Thailand, particularly Bangkok and Phuket. We have both always wanted to go and so we are hoping to spend about three weeks there after she graduates. If we can squeeze it in (this is a hope), we want to also travel Laos and Vietnam, and then maybe throughout Indonesia, if possible.

My current obsession is Cuenca, Ecuador. I plan on going next year. It is the number one place for American's to retire. It's an artsy city, in a beautiful country with perfect weather year round. I have never wanted to live in another country but with everything I have read so far - I have yet to find a downside.

Oh yes! Do you one of those big hiking backpacks? I don't plan on actually hiking (that is impossible since it requires sensible shoes) but I do plan to find the "Welcome to the Amazon Rainforest" sign, put on the backpack and take a picture for facebook. I like to create the illusion of having a sense of adventure and danger without actually sweating.

hahahahaha.
I don't have a hiking backpack, but Dylan does. We could take that along, stuff it with a bunch of paper, and take the picture in heels with that! You know, create the illusion (without the sweating) that we did the hike in non-sensible shoes. And non-sensible clothing too! You know, like women do everything in the movies! (Trekking jungles, running from zombies/monsters/ax murderers, surviving the Titanic or the Apocalypse or another disastrous equivalent!)

Has anyone been to Japan? We are doing Tokyo and Kyoto in a few months so tips and suggestions are most welcome from fellow travelers!!!

Hi Laerkin,
I was in Japan for two weeks in May for work. I did not make it over to Kyoto - I did however spend some wonderful time in Tokyo, Mt. Fuji, Oshima, Enoshima, Kamakura and some of the smaller prefectures in Tokyo.
Most important depends on what you are looking to do and see. I would highly recommend Sumo in Tokyo. While I never imagined it would be something I enjoyed -- I totally got into it and almost fell off the balcony rooting for my wrestler! Kabuki is a must as well.
If you are interested in seeing temples - I would suggest you take the train to Kamakura (from Tokyo) and then walk or cab into Enoshima, where you should find a traditional Japanese Inn to stay. You will sleep on traditional bedding and have your meals served in your room - Quite the beautiful experience. Enoshima is a tiny fishing village walking distance to Kamakura - GORGEOUS! The temple in both Enoshima and Kamakura are spectacular. Amida Budda can be found in Kamakura (the largest standing buddah). Though, it was a tad touristy. Don't forget to buy lots of little $5 charms from the temples - they are the BEST (lol).
I was in Mt. Fuji for our annual Symphony of Peace at Fuji Sanctuary... And while there is not so much to see in Fuji - It is a spectacular site, and perhaps you can walk up the mountain a bit. I believe they have transportation to a certain point.
Do not forget the HOT SPRINGS!
Any other questions please ask -- I can always find out for you through my work, as my organization is Japanese based.
Julie

I wanted to leave a special post tonight in this forum...
I've been reading a bit about a Russian philosopher of language, literary critic and semiotician Mikhail Bakhtin and his ideas around dialogism, carnivalesque, and his Philosophy of the Act: Bahktin makes three claims regarding the acknowledgment of the uniqueness of one's participation in "being:"
1) I both actively and passively participate in being;
2) that my uniqueness is a given but it simultaneously exits only to the degree to which I actualize my uniqueness;
3) Because I am actual and irreplaceable I must actualize my uniqueness.
SoOOoOoOoo,
Here's a little quote I found while perusing some materials at the library today:
True open seriousness fears neither parody, nor irony, nor any other form of reduced laughter, for it is aware of being part of an uncompleted whole (...) it does not deny seriousness but purifies and completes it. Laughter purifies dogmatism from the intolerant and the petrified, from fanaticism and pendantry, from fear and intimidation.
--M. Bakhtin
Someday....
I would love to visit Russia but until I am able to, I am happy to leave a photo here tonight of a beautiful place I would love to see one day...

What a beautiful philosophy, thank you.
"that my uniqueness is a given but it simultaneously exists only to the degree to which I actualize my uniqueness" I love this sentiment.
I would love to see Russia as well, particularly St. Petersburg
When I lived in London and had easy (& super cheap) access to Europe - I traveled to "warmer" climates almost exclusively. Now I would like to explore Northern & Central European capitals: Reykjavik (I loved Laerkin's photos), Copenhagen, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Krakow, Dubrovnik
But there is so much more of the world to see, such incredibly beauty and adventure everywhere --- I'm not sure when I'll make it back to Europe again.
My next big plan is to explore South America, does anyone have any stories or photos to share?

The most beautiful place that I have been to is Glencolumbkille in South West Donegal on Ireland's Atlantic coast. Spectacular in so many ways.
Other beautiful places for me are Siem Reap in Cambodia, Sedona and the island of Boracay in the Philippines.
I like cities that have a sadness in their history and both creative and conservative energies - other than my favourite of Belfast, I also love Manila, Mexico City, Athens, Rome and Tbilisi. I can take or leave London and Paris.

Okay, I'm assuming that Boracay is a part of Aklan province? I love Boracay. It's such an under-rated and beautiful island. It would be a perfect retirement location for me (well, for a few months each year anyway), esp some of the quieter parts of the island on the opposite side from White Beach.

I just returned from a trip to Oregon/Washington and came across so many beautiful places on the trip!
Multnomah Falls - Oregon
Horsetail Falls - Oregon
First & Second Beach - La Push, Washington
Sol Duc Hot Springs - Washington
The entire drive down the coast of Oregon is just beautiful, so many beaches and places to stop, really it is a must do, with a few days planned for it to really have the time to stop and see all the amazing sights.
As well, the redwood forests in California are great. The Avenue of the Giants is so beautiful, what an amazing forest and drive to take with tons of hikes and camping options as well.

I'm thinking of catching the train up to Bangkok for a few days next month during Eid ul-Fitr/school holidays. Leave either the Saturday or the Sunday afternoon by train.
I'm not sure that I'll go out of Bangkok because I don't want to rush around like a crazy person and maybe this will be a taster for more visits to Thailand.
Any tips/suggestions for Bangkok?

It wouldn't be everyone's favourite part of Bangkok but I love the Sukhumvit area of the city. It's well worth exploring and the night life there is great also.
Siam Square is also worthwhile visiting - if you like shopping, then you NEED to visit Siam Paragon that is located there. It's spectacular.
LGBT-scene is a bit underground but not bad in Bangkok. The butch-femme scene, or tom-dee scene in Thai terminology, is actually strong with a number of specific events and clubs. I know some tom-dee folk in Bangkok so if you're visiting Bangkok and want to meet some friendly faces, then let me know and I'll see if I can put you in touch.

It's almost pillow time for me tonight....
and because I often dream one day of visiting France, I found this lovely picture of a beautiful home in a rural French countryside. I wish I knew more about my father's mother - she was born in France and everytime we had a family reunion, my aunts, uncles and cousins would remark to me about how much I looked like my father's mother (Vera). I know that as I age, I see that I look like her - more and more, as time goes by.

Sis
Nha Trang has not been on my bucket list to date - maybe it should.
I visited Saigon (or Ho Chi Minh) in March / April 2005 and had an energy-sapping experience there. It coincided with the 30th anniversary of the fall of Saigon to the Viet Cong, although I was totally ignorant of that when I booked.
Also, I was on the trip with my partner and we were on the verge of breaking up (in fact, we basically broke up in Saigon) which complicated things further.
There were many demonstrations and rallies over the few days I was there. Also saw some US Vietnam veterans who now lived there as was easier dealing with some of their issues closer to where they occurred than back home in the US.
More so, I remember the stunning French architecture of Saigon - truly beautiful.
On one of my trips to the Philippines, I'll call by Saigon again. Catch-up with some of my ghosts.

Leaving in a few hours for the Russian River area of Sonoma County. I spent the summer there last year and will spend two months there this summer. It's my second favorite place in California. I just love it. I have to catch the cats first and then endure two hours of yowling in the car. But it's worth it. Poor babies. They like it too -- once they arrive.
Friends staying with me much of the time. One weekend trip to hear some Bluegrass. Russian River Brewery and Lagunitas nearby. It's a good way to spend the summer. River, redwoods, vineyards and breweries, and a stone's throw from Jenner and the Sonoma coast. I wish my summer breaks at the new job were longer, but it's a good job, and we get extra weeks off during the year. Anyway, so long South Bay. . . .

I took the Amtrak Starlight down to visit a friend who came up for a training in her state agencies' office and while waiting for the train to arrive from Seattle, I sat in the train station lobby next to a rather large group of Amish people from Indiana. They were going to be on the same train, going down to Klamath for this leg of their journey, but they had just come from seeing Banff National Park (in the Calgary/Edmonton area of Alberta, Canada). The group of Amish were composed of six sisters (with their husbands) and their mother and father. They were on their 'trip of a life time,' that all of them saved toward over the past year. They have a family owned business, back in Indiana, so it took a lot of time and preparation to be off for three weeks. The very last car of the Starlight (coastal Amtrak) train was reserved for them - it was a turn of the century car from the late 1880s, early 1900s. They traveled to Banff first, then they're at the Redwoods in Crescent City today and then, they travel down further to the grove of Redwoods in Yosemite, CA.... to finish their summer vacation before returning to Indiana.
Anyway, I've always wanted to take an extended vacation to go see both Jasper National Park and Banff National Park. :stillheart:

I want to see the city of Detroit this summer,in Michigan.I have been all over the U.S.A. but i never been there. It sure would be great if some one invited me to Russia,if not,i'll be going there in about two years.
Over and done with.I still haven't been to Russia, yet.
Mexico again by the end of this year, the wife has family there. My father's parents were born in mexico and I'm sure I have a ton of family there also but never knew any of them..thanks dad.
Now,on my mother's side,i'm just beginning to meet whole new family (long lost sisters, ect)thanks to DNA,ancestry . com,fb,just to name a few sites.Pretty exciting.

I’m recently out of a relationship that just wasn’t healthy for me. I’ve had the desire to visit a nude beach in east Hampton, montauk area since a woman I met told me about it. I’m curious if anyone here has been? It would be such an amazing, liberating and sexy experience

I think a snowstorm is very beautiful that is if you don't have to shovel, drive, or be out in it!

I recently went to St. Petersburg, Florida for a business conference. It was beautiful. Clear blue water, white sand, and bright sunshine. Great restaurants with yummy seafood.
I recommend it.
