I was born in Columbia, but I haven't been back to visit since my grandparent's died almost 20 years ago. I loved it there ... but I'll bet I wouldn't recognize the area anymore.

I grew up in chapin, which is north of columbia on lake murray. I know the area quite well. MISS THE BBQ!!!!! If you get a chance try it, its unbelievable!! My family still resides there. It is my hope to return there family in tow. GG and I have spent a couple of vacations there in the past. She is getting used to the country folks down there and most of them are great people, very nice. Enjoy and explore.

Gosh I am trying to get GG to take a day trip just to get BBQ. Also try the Hash over rice with the BBQ. I'd have to stop and see everyone and take a dip in the lake before heading back.

many of you know that I rarely come here, I only come for her because so many of you mean so much to her, so with that said,
I wanted to stop in with a big thanks to all of you who are making my woman smile lately. You really ought to see her running around here, making sure things are perfect, and re-doing it over and over again, lol, she's happy right now, and I like that.

OK here's my peanut story. My Pa was a cop and he'd come home in the middle of the night to check on Mom when she was pregnant with me, cuz my Daddy was over seas. The only thing she ever craved was boiled peanuts. Pa would go back out and pick her up a bag.

So of course it is hereditary that I LOVE :drool: boiled peanuts. Mom swears she doesn't want any flowers on her grave, just a patch of peanut plants.

When I met Pearls a few years back, she was a good sport and tried one. She said she didn't care for any more, thanks. I was like :| boiled peanuts are better then sex! :tease: She said well I don't know what kind of sex you've been having then.:rofl:

My fondest boiled peanut memories are of being a child and my Gigi would take me to the high school football games. Back in the day it was cold or at least cool during football season. She'd buy me a bag of warm boiled peanuts and let me at 'em. Finally she'd get tired of watching me waste so much of the "goody" because I didn't know how to open them properly she'd open them for me.

I'm sure if you can find them in NY they are not the same as good ole SC boiled peanuts. They have a brand in the convenience stores down here now and the first time I got them I thought OMG I hope someone passing thru doesn't try these and think this is what boiled peanuts really are like.

Cooking boiled peanuts is a science in itself. The best of the best are in Ga, SC, and NC. Right now my favorite P-nut guy is in Shelby. I stop every time I go to the mountains and have been known to ride up to Shelby just for the day to get his P-nuts.

i know they are in other states besides SC, but i don't know how many & which ones. Some grocery stores sell them in a can or a pouch.....do NOT try those before you get the chance to try "real" ones!

i'd be interested in knowing where else they are eaten.

I have seen a vendor or two on the side of the road here in Middle Tennessee. I have never tried them.

I went to Shelby 2 Sundays ago and got some and went with Mom to visit Nannie last Sunday and we went to the flea market on HWY #1 in West Columbia and each got a big bag. OMG! Fresh, hot, boiled peanuts! YUMMY!!! Being a good lil femme from Gawwwga and being raised during childhood in SC, Ive had my share of boiled peanuts! Everytime I go home, I load my trunk with canned Margaret Holmes' Reanut Patch boiled peanuts. They arent nearly as good as some, but living in NY, they are better than nothing. I couldnt find the large cans of them this last time, but I did get some boiled and frozen in my aunt's freezer!

I was born and raised in Charleston, SC and Marietta, GA. I recently moved out of the south clear across country to LA and do I ever miss boiled peanuts! I used to take all those vendors hocking dollar bags of peanuts on the side of the road. I used to buy bushels of green peanuts and make pounds and pounds of boiled peanuts in a pressure cooker to freeze for the off season.

Sigh. No green peanuts here! I wonder if I could have them shipped...

Most outsiders are aghast at the notion of boiling peanuts until they are all soft and squishy and briny - and then popping the whole thing, shell-n-all, in your mouth to get it. Delicious! I've noticed that it's either a love or hate food.

Since moving to NC, I've enjoyed many regional NC and SC treats, especially the really dark homegrown local honey and Carolina Gold BBQ Sauce (OMG!! That stuff is AWESOME!) ....but boiled peanuts are not on my list of "things worth having again" (no offense intended)....unless maybe my housemate would smother them in Gold BBQ sauce and the texture was different?

Until then, Sweet and her sweet tooth will look for other NC and SC treats to enjoy ;) ;)

Get Damon a sand box. Peanuts grow best in sand, believe me if you had to pull peanuts very long you'd be glad to pay for them any day any way. I wish I had a dime for every Tater I've picked up and all the peanuts I've pulled.
