Despite what you might have heard, food is my favorite thing. I love cooking food or going out for it. I also like to hear about other people's eating experiences as well. I've thought about starting this thread for awhile now but what clinched it for me was getting ready to move back to San Diego. I have so many favorite places to eat there and besides the great food and drinks at these places I get a lot of comfort going back to the familiar atmosphere in these places.

I would love to hear about your favorite places too! So, here's a place to post your resturant raves. Do you have a favorite place to get a nibble and a cocktail? A place you had a great dinner? Or a favorite place that makes a specific dish that you go back for time and time again? Why not share your dining experiences here? I'll begin to post a few of mine and hope you will too. Thanks in advance!

I'm starting this off with my favorite place to get an appetizer. The place is called Kemo Sabe, and it's located in Hillcrest, the gay mecca neighborhood of San Diego. Yes, it can be loud and sorta trendy and yes, the parking sucks but this brie more than makes up for that inconvenience. They make a pretty good martini there if you are so inclined to try. But what I go there for is the brie. I never really LOVED brie until I tried this roasted nut crusted fried brie. They serve it with jalepeno jelly on the side, some grilled squaw bread, chile-rubbed tortillas, and honey roasted garlic. I've been able to duplicate the honey roasted garlic and make it at home but NEVER the brie. It's so good I don't like sharing it but will if I have to.

That sounds delish!

Anywhere that I can get a perfectly for me cooked steak has permanent residence in a tiny corner of my heart, but if we're supposed to be specific, there's a place near me now that has a divine spinach salad. It's no ordinary spinach salad though. The dressing makes it. It's a warm, smoked bacon vinaigrette.

Think about that for a minute.

Hell yeah.

The Top (http://www.myspace.com/thetoprestaurant)in Gainesville, Florida is one of our favourite places to eat. I get cravings if I don't go there regularly!

It is a funky kinda place with kitschy artwork and an old photo booth in the back. The servers (and patrons) have a bit of an alternative edge to them, but there is a large cross-section of people and it has an inclusive and casual atmosphere.

They just added a cool patio out back too.

Drink specials are awesome! Half priced wine during happy hour! However, it is the food we come for...and some of our favourites are...

me-->sweet potato fries with garlic dipping sauce, spinach salad with scallops (and goat cheese, red peppers, toasted pecans!), crab cakes, portobello mushroom burger, Thai peanut chicken stir fry.

him-->their burgers (they are awesome) and steaks! haha! (he doesn't deviate too much!)

the best gelato in NYC

I think I need a pilgramage soon. When I lived on the Lower East Side, this was an every weekend thing. From the classic like chocolate hazelnut to flavors like lavender - and now cheddar cheese! (i may need to try that one).

I've never had a bad flavor yet. yummy.

Best cupcake in NYC (no not magnolia or buttercup or crumbs - trust me on this one)

http://www.sugarsweetsunshine.com/

Sugarsweet Sunshine on Rivington Street on the lower east side. they're all amazing but my faves are "the bob" which is yellow with chocolate almond butter-cream frosting, and Pistachio which is fucking amazing.

Within a block or two is also Economy candy where you can buy all the oldtimey candy plus gourmet chocolate, (and hand dipped graham crackers covered in dark chocolate).

There are a bunch of amazing restaurants in Portland... especially breakfast joints. We love breakfast around here.

One of my favorites is Toast. It is a small place...but very homey. The owner is a guy who has worked in a bunch of restaurants in town and finally wanted to start one in his own neighborhood. And he works too. Seriously the guy must drink copious amounts of coffee...he is always ON.

He focuses on fresh, local ingredients.

Organic locally roasted coffee delivered by bike.

Specials of the day/week based on produce in season from CSA's.

Meat from local farmers (organic grass fed, etc)

And the staff are right on bringing you coffee, making suggestions, etc.

It is the perfect neighborhood breakfast joint.

I hear they make a mean bloody mary. I don't like tomato juice so, I admire from afar.

This is what I order the most:

The Occasional Hedonist
Sweet onion tart topped with two poached eggs and Hollandaise sauce. add rosti or sautéed greens.

http://www.toastpdx.com/

It is a wee bit more $$ because of the above, but SO worth it.

Hash House A Go Go makes twisted farm food. This is my favorite place to go to brunch on a Sunday morning. Be prepared to wait though, there's always a line. It's on 5th Ave in San Diego. They make great egg dishes and awesome french toast. My favorite dishes there are the Hash House famous meatloaf, roasted red peppers, fresh spinach and smoked mozzarella or one of the scrambles like the smoked chicken, sundried tomato pesto, spinach and goat cheese.

Ooooo....I adore the Hillcrest area!!! :awww:

You should check out "The Big Kitchen", near there, in the neighborhood area, just off Grape St. They're only open for lunch and dinner, but lemme tell ya, the food is great and the prices are fair. Whoopee Goldberg used to wash dishes there for her meals, back before she made the big time. She's still close friends with the owner, Judy Forman, and sometimes still visits the place. Some of the best Italian food in Las Vegas can be found at the corner of Jones and Flamingo at a little spot called "Nora's Cuisine". It's been on "The Best of Las Vegas" list for many years running and is a cozy little spot with great food and a full wine/spirit list. They also have a piano bar.

www.norascuisine.com/

Another great breakfast spot (and local's haunt) is the Omelet House, near the northwest corner of Charleston and Rancho. They have huge deluxe gourmet omelets, delicious "potato chip" style homemade breakfast potatoes, and huge slabs of home made pumpkin and banana breads, served with soft butter. Oh, and beware of the famous "Grunion Omelet". :|

Wow, she used to have this guy cooking who was a big guy with a white hair and a full beard. Man, could he bake the BEST floury white Southern-style biscuits!!! I also adore the corned beef hash and eggs!!! I sure am missing that place now.

When my ex and I first started going there, over 10 years ago, Judy didn't have that extra addition or the outside patio. It was just that one section of the building with the booths/lunch counter in the front with a few tables. She's really grown that place. :)

It's great to know someone else also knows about and loves The Big Kitchen. I still have a couple of the fridge magnets from there that Judy gave me. :winky:

I try to get over to San Diego once a year or so, and I like to stay at the Navy Lodge over on NAS North Island (Coronado). I do most of my computer shopping at the 32nd St. NavyExchange. :D

I like my own cooking the best, but

There are two local places that j'adore,

The People's Pint (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Greenfield-MA/The-Peoples-Pint/105656192142) and The Rendezvous (http://www.rendezvoustfma.com/).

The People's Pint welcomes both the local guys, the families, students from the tech school who are old enough to drink, and

The newcomers like me who live behind The Tofu Curtain.

There are microbrews and decent wine, and now you can get Diet Coke with your Ploughman's Lunch.

The Voo is a much newer place and I think I like it even more than the Pint.

I always have appetizers there, like a huge pretzel with two kinds of mustard, or grilled asparagus with garlic aioli.

Pete took her mother there for her birfday and

We got snockered, which is polite talk for tipsy on cocktails.

The best thing about The Voo is Rockit Queer which is a dirty dirty dance party held every month in the very tiny bar with beautiful tin ceilings.

At my house tonight? Grilled scallops with grilled mushrooms and baby white potatoes.

Lefty's Chicago Pizzaria http://www.leftyspizza.com/ is tiny inside, there are only about four tables and some counter seating for a few more and also a little bit of seating outside. Although the people that work there are super friendly and the place is decked out all in Chi town sports memorabilia you don't go there for the ambiance you go there for the pizza. They have thin crust pizza that's square, deep dish and stuffed crust. You can order it by the slice too. Order at the counter or better yet call in and take out. There phone number is in my celly address book, no joke.

Lefty's pizza makes THE MOST AWESOME stuffed crust pizza ever! I recommend the Monsters of the Midway. It has sausage, pepperoni, hot giardiniera, elephant garlic and three pounds of mozza. Usually I can only eat one slice because it is HUGE so it's best to share. It's also fantastic the next day for breakfast.
They also have Chicago style hot dogs, polish sausage and all the fixins, brews and some cheap wine. Definitely one of my favorites in San Diego.

Oh yes, the naked bicycling. In fact, it was just this weekend. Rumor has it, there were 4000 riders this year...maybe more.

Portland really is awesome. I do love it. The rain has been *REALLY* hard to deal with this year...especially for those of us from CA. It rains here on average, intermittently 70% of the year. We cherish the sun when we have it.

Also, Portland is full of FOODIES! :D

I swear, I have had Thai food in quite a few countries, and I think some of the best is right here in Austin.

Quaint, perfect for a quick lunch, best service ever, freshest tofu in the entire city, and most affordable for quality Thai, and so quite worth a visit. Yummy. Titaya's (http://titayasthaicuisine.com/default.aspx).

Also really love this vegetarian "chain" in NYC: Candle Cafe (http://www.candlecafe.com/menu.html) and Candle 79 (http://www.candle79.com/). Heavenly.

And then there are breakfast tacos, which I find, the best, are Austin owned, and the cheapest at that. Tamale House (http://www.federationofhorsepower.com/images/photos/atx2/3_tamale.jpg)by far is the quickest, cheapest and some of the tastiest breakfast tacos around. And the salsa takes the prize, I find, for just being perfect with the tacos they make. On any given weekend day, people flock to the place from as early as 6:30 am to noon or 1 or so, when there is a line out the door, as all the Austin hipsters/musicians have finally woken up, taken a bong hit, and think of Tamale House to melt away their hangovers. Tacos are only 85 cents, salsa is free and you can have as much as you want. Cash only. It's awesome.

Mothers Bistro (http://www.mothersbistro.com/) I only ever have the Ribeye, garlic mashed and sauteed spinach here. I love the decor and the staff. The owner has a great personal story and just put out a cookbook this year. She also owns Mama Mia's (http://www.mamamiatrattoria.com/) next door. Hands down the best Chicken Marsala I have ever eaten.

For Family Dinners, Graduations, Birthdays, etc. Tad's (http://www.tadschicdump.com/) is usually my first pick. Fresh sourdough rolls with real butter, relish trays with baby corns! Excellent bloody mary's. I have either the pan fried oysters, ribeye or prime rib.

I'm a creature of habit, and generally order the same thing every time. I also will not wait in line for breakfast, that's just stupid. My favorite breakfast place here in Portland is Besaws (http://www.besaws.com/) where I usually have the Wild Salmon Scramble. Unless there's a line, then I get huffy and go back home.

Sassy is much more patient than I am, so she gets out more. How's that, EZ?

Another one of my faves in Portland is: Screen Door (http://www.screendoorrestaurant.com/)

I have only been here for breakfast (can you tell we like breakfast?)

It is best to arrive about half hour before opening because otherwise the wait is 1-2 hours – June-y would not enjoy this.

They are famous for the fried chicken & waffle: Spicy buttermilk battered fried chicken over a sweet potato waffle. It is a bit too much for my stomach, but it is very popular and definitely enough for 3 meals.

I like to order the traditional benedict or one of the scrambles. Often I actually order one of the specials, which often has some different ingredients like kale, chard, sautee'd spinach, roasted red peppers, fennel, chanterelles, etc.

They have delicious biscuits and gravy. There are several places in town for great B&G...this is in the top 5.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3131/2877310808_c333a071eb_m.jpg

Also the grits are soooooo good.

And of all things, they have a really wonderful organic oatmeal with butter and brown sugar and fresh fruit of your choice. It is a huge bowl, enough for leftovers.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2149/2877311016_86c9289d9a_m.jpg

Everything is fresh! The coffee is good and strong. In fact they have s self-serve coffee area where you can make your own while you are waiting for your table.

The kitchen is always bustling…it is great to watch them prepare the food.

They play great music, like class jazz or big band...

This is an awesome Mexican restaurant that has reasonable prices, friendly staff and fantastic food!

Endless supply of nachos and the best salsa to go with them.

You can order a combo and split it b/w two people: Consuelo's Favorite $ 11.50
1st part - one tostada topped with chile con queso and one tostada with beans, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes.
2nd part- one Enchilada Manuel and one crispy beef taco.

Friendly wait staff, a nice patio (but on a road with no view...they make it nice, though), and reasonable prices. You can't go wrong for some decent Mexican food here if you are in the Tampa area!

Especially when they are a foot tall and 8" in diameter. You do the math.

I'm only in it for the Umbrella and Cherries.

Well that's a relief! If you were in for the foot long and 8" of girth we would have many questions for you.

Really excellent Thai in NYC, East Village: Holy Basil (http://www.holybasilrestaurant.com/)

Sip Sak (http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/sip-sak/) is some great Turkish food in NYC.

Way overpriced, and horrid service, but my best friend and I used to go here in NYC which is spectacular, because the view overlooks central park at Columbus Circle. You can make it somewhat affordable by sharing appetizers. We go for the Martinis there. Here is an image of the bar, as the lounge is kinda swank and impressive, and then the rest of it is pretty much solid window for looking out onto the park: Stone Rose Lounge (http://images.clubzone.com/company/images/upload/stonerose.jpg).

~~~
And I know this isn't exactly a restaurant, but the Skeff Bar in Galway, Ireland is one of my favorite spots. This bar is incredible (it's actually like three or four) and there is a small restaurant that accompanies it, I believe, but I've never eaten there. Here (http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.irelandlogue.com/files/2006/12/skeffoutside.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.irelandlogue.com/places-to-go/pubs/the-skeff-bar-galway.html&usg=__BPT-UwVH7nI1GReTfmFcyLApyDo=&h=225&w=300&sz=28&hl=en&start=1&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=q7ZePCBHGXDNvM:&tbnh=87&tbnw=116&prev=/images%3Fq%3DThe%2BSkeff%2BBar%2BGalway%26um%3D1%2 6hl%3Den%26client%3Dsafari%26sa%3DN%26rls%3Den%26t bs%3Disch:1). Another place I like to go is >Chez Machin (http://www.chezmachincreperie.com/)<
I found this little gem when I first moved to Portland just randomly wandering around in one of the neat neighborhoods we have, Hawthorne.
The restaurant is quaint and comfy. They decorate in the traditional "French" way...play french music, etc.
What I love about this place is the staff are really kind and always seem really happily mellow. They have great suggestions, are very patient with my weird food ordering ways...And the food is just good. Always good. It never wavers.
They have the best french onion soup I have ever had...so tasty.
They have lots of crepes (which are VERY popular here) but I typically order:
Croque Monsieur-Grilled Emmentaller swiss cheese, Black Forest ham and dijon mustard sandwich topped with melted Emmentaller swiss cheese
and/or
Salade Lyonnaise-Mixed greens tossed in homemade Dijon vinaigrette with bacon, diced tomatoes, homemade croutons and topped with a poached egg.
Sometimes I get the special - Chicken Cordon Bleu or Quiche.
If we are feeling especially decadent, we might get this appetizer: Brie en Croute-Brie cheese baked in savory pastry. Served with roasted garlic and sliced apples, sliced baguette, and local berry compote.
or a crepe for dessert (rarely for me since I don't eat much refind sugar) but if I do, it is often this: La Compote-Cooked apples and cinnamon with caramel sauce.
The prices are VERY reasonable as well. 2 for dinner is usually around $25 depending on what we order.
For casual dining in San Diego one of my faves for Mexican food is El Zarape (http://www.yelp.com/biz/el-zarape-san-diego). They don't have a website but they have some awesome reviews on YELP.
They make the best mahi mahi fish tacos and great mole. I like the chicken mole burrito. Their homemade chips are great and they have a nice salsa bar. They have a huge menu written on the wall when you first walk in. They have tons of vegetarian choices too, including soy enchiladas which are really good. All the seafood choices can't be beat, lobster burritos, scallop tacos as well. It's in a cool part of town with lots of good people watching and a fun place to just take a little walk after you chow down.
Once, I was in Charleston, SC (I know, I left the north! Wow!), I had an amazing dining experience here and I have subsequently recommended it to some friends who traveled there. It's quite southern (when in Rome, right?), but, gourmet. Rather good. If you are there, or will go there, try this place. You will not be disappointed.
Now this is a thread I could spend all day in.
Chicago Favs:
Cafe Ba Ba Reeba (http://www.northpondrestaurant.com/). Part of the Melman Brother's Lettuce Entertain You empire, but oh so good. Spanish Tapas with great social ambiance and almost universally great wait staff. They do know how to train 'em. Bacon wrapped dates, stuffed mushrooms, wonderful sangria... sigh. In a word? Festive.
North Pond (http://www.northpondrestaurant.com/) To say this is a hidden gem is an understatement on two fronts. Most Chicagoans don't even know this exists and those that do still would have a hard time finding it. There is, to my palate, no finer dining experience in Chicago. You might pay more, but you can't get better. They have a great wine list and make lovely cocktails as well as serving up fresh, locally sourced organic food. Therefore their menu changes frequently. Nummy.
There are plenty of great cheap eats as well.
Hot Dogs: SuperDawg (http://www.superdawg.com/) on Touhy. You may disagree about the "bestness" of the dog, but you cannot deny that they have a great experience. Right down to the packaging.
Gyro: Andie's (http://www.andiesres.com/). Andie's used to be a hole in the wall drop in joint when I was growing up in the neighborhood. I didn't go for years after I moved out of the area and then finally went for brunch one Sunday. Can't recommend the brunch, but they still have good gyros.
Pizza: Everyone says Duo's, Malnati's or Girodano's. Bullocks. Pequod's (http://www.pequodspizza.com/) is the place for pie. Just try it.
Sweet Treats: For years I would have said Margie's. Hands down. Margie's is an institution and I think it's a shame that I can no longer recommend them, but after being refused service on my birthday ("we don't serve your kind!!") I just can't support them. Instead I say "Cupcakes (http://maps.google.com/maps/place?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=idS&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=cupcakes+chicago&fb=1&gl=us&hq=cupcakes&hnear=Chicago,+IL&cid=17792946406998810608)" on Briar in boytown.
Will be back for tips on other places I've lived and visited.
Cafe Ba Ba Reeba - Yes. God. Yes. I've been to the one in Chicago and the one in Vegas. I wish they had one here in PDX.
Those bacon wrapped dates. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
That was a fun time, indeed, here in Vegas at Cafe Ba Ba Reeba and getting to spend time with you, Kat, Waldo, LCS, and "The Gang". :awww:
That was the first time I'd been to Cafe Ba Ba Reeba, or anyplace like it. I thoroughly enjoyed it, too, and the food there was absolutely wonderful. :drool:
I didn't know I'd like that kind of food as much as I do!!
When you guys come back....and I know you will, one of these days, I will take you to eat Dim Sum at the Orchid Garden....and we will also take in the all-you-can-eat sushi and tempura bar at Makeno's. :danglecarrot::winky:
I like my sushi on a train. We have a couple of places here in town that do that, Sushiland and Sushi Takehashi. Mio Sushi is good too, but sadly, no train.
On Monday nights we have the NYC Queer knitting group, and we meet at Whole Foods on Houston. They have a sushi bar with traveling sushi! They also make sushi with brown rice if you ask!
Massachusetts
Boston
Legal Seafood (http://www.legalseafoods.com/) may be a chain and it may not be the best seafood in the world, but I have never had a bad meal at a stand alone Legal outlet. The Logan airport location just delivered the first bad meal I'd ever had at Legal so I can no longer claim "never" wholly, but well qualified I still recommend it.
Abe & Louie's (http://www.backbayrestaurantgroup.com/) is one of those "old boy" type places that you don't think exist any more. If you're a regular they know you and your palate extremely well. They know the table you prefer and the cocktail that you'll want waiting. If not, you may well want to become a regular.
East Side Bar & Grille (http://eastsidebarandgrille.com/) in Cambridge is my go to place for a good cocktail or a well poured beer and a low key atmosphere. Get a baked quahog and a salad with your Harpoon IPA and you're golden.
Western MA
Eastside (http://www.eastsidegrill.com/) is the place I jones for when I'm away. They have a good caesar salad and serve it with anchovy (as the food gods intended!). They no longer plate my favorite fish dish, but always have a nice selection of fresh seafood. Try the sweet potato chips with artichoke and crab dip. I have no idea why they don't put it on the regular menu because it's been on the specials list every time I've been there over the last three years.
Carmelina's (http://www.carmelinas.com/) in Hadley is a new fav for me. Was just there this month. It's easy to say that it's charming, but what you wouldn't realize from the exterior is that you'll get some of the best service inside this unassuming space. Paired with great ambiance and live music and you start to understand why it's always packed.
Esselon (http://www.esselon.com/), also in Hadley, is one og my favorite places to grab breakfast or brunch. They have a lovely gardenside patio to enjoy while injesting amazing carb laden breakfast goodness. If I liked coffee I have no doubt I'd love theirs. It smells great!
Green Street Cafe (http://www.greenstreetcafenorthampton.com/), in the shadow of Smith college, serves a small but very fresh menu in a converted storefront space that can feel a little odd, but none-the-less quite welcoming. The service tends to be a little on the flighty side, but the food more or less makes up for it.
Cape Cod
http://www.yelp.com/biz/edwige-provincetown in Provincetown is ideal for a romantic dinner with cocktails, but be forewarned, it's small, bustling and can be quite hot when the weather heats up. They win points for great cocktail concoctions.
Menu looks good.....this place would be in Wicker Park at North Ave and Damen Ave. At one time this neighborhood was gang infested and run down. Then the Yuppies started buying up property and turned it into an eclectic night life filled with food and fun all around. Parking is at a premium in that area, so when visiting, either take a cab or use public transit.
For myself, I miss pizza in my hometown of Chicago, so when I visit, I like to go to Lincoln Park and eat at Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinders. It sits directly across the street from where the St Valentine's Day Massacre happened. It's a small venue that's been there for more than 30 years. They don't take reservations or credit cards, so you must bring cash. They only serve pizza two ways, with or without meat and a half pounder or full pound. It's a pizza eating experience you'll never forget because the pizza is brought to you in a bowl oozing with cheese. It is then turned upside down on a plate and the server gently removes it from the hot bowl it was cooked in. It's amazing to see the transformation once it's on a plate.
If you like beer, they have a brewery on the property and have won several awards for their beers, not to mention getting into a war with another company over the name Fat Bastard for their beer. If it's good enough to get into litigation over, you know it's good. :blink:
For those that don't like beer, they also make their own ginger ale and root beer on the property too. Scrumpdiddlyumtious!
I'm partial to their spinach salad and porter glazed salmon but suggest staying away from their cowboy steak. They leave the coffee grounds (used to tenderize the meat) on the steak. Ick.
Okay, don't stop. Just give me directions.
Now, if you're talking about Makino's (I spelled it wrong before), Gemmie, you gotta go for lunch, because it's the same menu, just less expensive. It'll run you about $20, plus drinks now, I think, but it's well worth it and all you can eat!! :drool:
Their web site looks like it may be under construction right now, but the details and addresses of their locations (I usually go to the one on Decatur) can be found here:
http://www.lasvegas.net/Makino-Las-Vegas-Seafood-Buffet.htm
On another note, I am originally from Savannah, Georgia, and a Southern boy in just about every way. One of my most favorite places to eat is a little seafood joint called "The Crab Trap", located at St. Simon's Island, off the intracoastal waterway, near Brunswick, GA. That place has the best southern fried oysters and batter dipped fries you'd ever hope to put in your mouth!! The tables in the restaurant have holes cut into the middle so you can toss your shrimp tails, crab shells and oyster shells into, as you eat. If you ever get down that way, be sure to stop, as it's a place you'll not want to miss!!! :winky::thumbsup:
Stuck at the airport?
Check out Todd English's Figs. [More known in Boston].
Portobello mushroom pizza. White chocolate bread pudding.
Bread pudding has enough eggs in it to start a chicken farm. Beyond delicious as a result.
Both of these will serve your discriminating palate as well as make your socks go up and down.
Mangiar bene!
