View Full Version : What Was Your First Concert?
Mrs. Strutt

I was reminiscing with some clients today and we got to talking about our very first concerts. I thought it would be fun to take a walk down memory lane and provoke a bit of nostalgia here on BFP. So what was your first concert?
Mine: Journey's 1979 Evolution Tour. I was 16 years old and thought I had died and gone to heaven. It is still on my top three list of best concerts ever attended.

The first one (that changed my life; I don't count the ones that don't *s) was Sweet Honey in the Rock.
It was the day of Earth Hour (one hour of darkness for global warming) and to honor that, without having to change their concert set, they did a full song in complete darkness, except for their sign language interpreter who was lit in a single spotlight.
It was truly one of the most moving experiences of my entire life.

#1 Black Sabbath with Ted Nugent opening at Madison Square Garden.
So the first thing i ever heard at a concert was Ted Nugent yelling - "If you motherfuckers want to be fucking mellow, get the fuck out of here!"
#2 was Patti Smith (horses tour) with papa john creach opening on fiddle.
(both 1976 i believe)

Not entirely sure ... there may have been a couple before then but I attended an Alice Cooper concert. Thinking around 1972 ...
turasultana, I envy you! Black Sabbath would have done it for me in a big way. I have all their CDs from back in the 70s and still love listening to them. All their vinyls were too scratched to salvage.

I went to all kinds of country/gospel concerts with my family when I was growing up, but I didn't consider those to count. It only counted when I went to my first concert on my own...lol ;)
Summer Sanitarium Tour 2000
System of a Down
Powerman 5000
Korn
Kid Rock
Metallica
It was a hot as hades day standing in the infield of the Rockingham Speedway all morning/afternoon/night watching this awesome bunch of musicians. Got there at 5am and left the following 3am. I slammed and got slammed in the mosh pits. I almost got struck by lightning while standing atop the giant METALLICA tower. I was bashed in the head by empty AND full beer bottles. I passed out from the heat. I had folks pouring $6 bottles of water over my head to bring me back to consciousness. I fought my way off an EMS stretcher to get back to my place by the stage. I was front and center against the rail for most of the acts, and got to actually talk to most of the bands. (Kid Rock was the only asshole that day...) I was soaked to the bone, first with sweat then with blood then with rain. It was the most fun I've had in my life...LOL

Genesis, 1979, Blackpool ABC
...although the next gig I went to had a far bigger impact, Adam and the Ants, somewhere in Cheshire (I can't remember exactly where). My brother's then girlfriend and I went together and we managed to chat-up the security guard in the 'under 4ft pen' (for the real little kids) and got an unobstructed view totally uncrushed by teenyboppers who were screaming for the band.

I never got to go to concerts as a teenager. My mom said "people smoke pot there, you might accidentally get high" LMFAO.. So, I didn't get to go until my mid 20's. It was Bush, No Doubt, and Goo Goo Dolls their first tour. There was a big riot and we got caught up in it, had a lot of fun. We got home, it was all over the news that night and I had a TON of calls on my answering machine from people wanting me to call them back to assure them I wasn't hurt.
Since then I've been to see several other bands. Most concerts I've been back stage and have autographs from the bands.

AC/DC Back in Black tour 1980 i think. How or why my parents let me go alone with just another 14 year old is a mystery. The women's bathrooms were scary. It was a great concert though. Hell Bells really rocked the house complete with dry ice smoke. Very cool.

I was a baby. We followed them to their hotel, climbed up to their balcony where Cher was horrified we would fall.
She invited us in...talked to us for an hour, asked how we were getting home and we said "hitchhiking". It was 2 am. I was 13. She said, "Oh no." She gave us 20 bucks for a cab. :D

I've also seen Tiffany and *Nsync.
I went to a rap fest once. I couldn't hear right for two days because, as the day had progressed, I'd made my way closer and closer to the ginormous speakers. Hearing aid makers everywhere began rubbing their hands gleefully, I just know it.
My bestie dragged me to a lot of country concerts. Not many stand out in my mind, unfortunately.
We also went to a lot of concerts at Silver Springs, where a lot of has-beens and never was'es but coulda beens and some almost theres perform. Again, not particularly memorable.
I bought tickets to go see Kelly Clarkson, but had to cancel at the last moment. That really bummed me out. Love her.

My second concert was Neil Young and Neil was a grouch. People in the audience started clapping during a song and he stopped and yelled "If I wanted clapping I would have written the fucking song with clapping in it" and spit all over himself.
I guess it's hard to be an artist sometimes when people mess up your songs with clapping and shit. :|

I don't remember what it was. But I do know one of the best concerts I was at was for LUTHER VANDROSS at the San Diego Sports Arena, 1989. Front row!!
Bob Dylan, in the midst 90's I think, in Stockholm. Big hat, sun glasses, he was very in cognito, actually but for the voice it could have been anyone standing on that stage. But still, he's Bob Dylan.

I saw most of the "big hair" bands (Poison, Duran Duran, Culture Club, etc.) but also Genesis with Phil Collins and several country bands (Oak Ridge Boys, Alabama, etc.) The best concert for "overall" experience was Billy Idol and Joan Jett but that had a lot to do with my date as well. :sunglass:
Smiling as I write this because nowadays my tastes run more towards classical (Yo Yo Ma, Chris Botti, etc.) as well as all female artists like Indigo Girls (can't count how many times I have seen them,) k.d. Lang, and Melissa Etheridge. Going to see Shawn Colvin next Friday.
Great thread and I am enjoying reading all the responses!

It was so long ago now, I can't remember the 1st one:|
I know during the 70's and 80's, at the Forum in Ingleside, CA; I saw Elton John, The Eagles, Bee Gees, Bob Seeger, The Rolling Stones; among others.
Now? Too expensive, crowded and noisy...
Oh my, I have turned into my mother...

I was so glad to see her gorgeous and Diva-licious as a performer this year, at nearly 70 (?!).

Mine was The Who, on their first "farewell tour" in 82. I was 12. Saw them in the Astrodome in Houston and got floor seats, back when they allowed arena seating. Which there were no seats.

N Sync was my first concert and P!nk opened for them. I was maybe 13 and SO EXCITED. Oh lawds, so many raging hormones bahaha.
My mom would take me and my brother to kid concerts when we were little so my first concerts were Sharon, Lois and Brahm, Tickle Tune Typhoon, Raffi, and local legend Tim Noah. When I was in junior high, my friend invited me to go see Michael W Smith with her. Then, in high school, I saw Depeche Mode. That's the one I usually claim to be my first concert. ;-)

Santana and BB King at the Kinetic Playground in Chicago -1969. I remember the concert hall was circular and had huge screens full of floating, fantastic, colors, with strobe lights everywhere pulsating in time with the music all around the room. I was sooo high. ;)

My very first concert was 'Nsync. Jordan Knight was headlining and I was 16. My best friend Kim, had just turned 14 and that was her mother's gift to us. I remember it being everything I had hoped it would be. I also remember grabbing Kim's hand and crying while we sang God must have spent a little more time on you.
Oh to be a teenager again.
OH AND! There is a rumor they are reuniting. I am fangirling all over the place <3

Bette Midler. Phoenix Symphony Hall, 1974. She'd just released The Divine Miss M a year earlier. She came out wearing wedgies about 4 inches high and pink boa and said....
I'm the Divine Miss Eeeeeeemmmmmm and I've come to shake my t*ts! And the whole house fell apart. To do this day it was the best concert I've ever seen besides Frank Sinatra.
