Bonne Bastille !

This morning I was reminded that it is Bastille Day by my good friend Bob (http://www.butchfemmeplanet.com/forum/member.php?u=107). You know, he's from New Orleans and they have quite a nice celebration of Bastille Day there.

For those of you who are reading this and thinking "what is Bastille Day? why should I care? this thread is lame, I'm going back to the singles thread." On July 14th, France celebrates its national holiday in commemoration of the storming of the Bastille prison, which took place in 1789 and marked the beginning of the French Revolution.

I wasn't there when they stormed the Bastille prison but I am really glad it happened and I am thankful for the French for many reasons. I do like their cheese and baguettes. We also have a French Bulldog (although sometimes I doubt his bloodlines). The French might hate me but I don't hate them. They have a nice health care system there and give employees lots of paid time off. Who doesn't like that?

So in honor of Bastille Day I raise a glass of faux French wine and say Vive la Fête!

I have also parted my hair on the left rather than the right today.

I'm totally down with a 35 hour work week, at least 3 weeks mandatory (and usually paid) time off a year, pastries and wine, high falutin' accents, and those nifty berets that looked so cute on Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin.

Happy Bastille Day! :wine:

*note* My hair is almost always parted on the left. It's rumored that my mom had some French ancestory. Maybe that's how it presents itself. And here I thought it was my love of all things cheese, sweet, fattening and expensive.

A number of years ago when I was in Paris, we stumbled upon a street market... and I just walked the aisles drooling.

I purchased a few pieces of roasted chicken and some small potatoes that had been cooked in the chicken juices. My friend and I took it back to the hotel and slowly savored it...

I have never in my life had better chicken and potatoes.

This is not my photo, unfortunately I did not take any at the market... but this looks JUST like it :)

Potatoes cooked in chicken fat are good even here in Arizona.

Things I like about France:

Their contribution to the population in Canada (thanks for donating some of your people! we needed them!)

Their disinclination to participate in bullshitty wars designed by moronic US presidents

Double entendres

Bête noire

Their healthcare

Their high standard of living

I'm pretty sure that the Metric system was invented in France

They have the 26th highest life expectancy in the world (Canada has the 11th, the US has the 38th)

I love old cathedrals. France has lots of those!

My schnoodle Molly is under the impression she has some French in her. I just let her believe it. Whatever makes her happy!!!

I got to uncork and pour a very nice bottle of French wine for Ms and other Dominants once.

I have used a goat cheese made in France for a special salad I make.

I read about a gay skating event that happens throughout the streets of Paris at night. I want to be a part of that event.

....I'm pretty sure that the Metric system was invented in France.....

Yes it was! le système métrique!

What I love about France:
Provence, Paris, wine, food, did I mention food, livable cities, the arts, did I mention wine, the architecture, fashion, perfume (Chanel 5 and Patou's Joy my favourites), health care, the 35 hour week, the 5 week vacation for everyone, free university system (the Sorbonne is a "paying" university, it costs $200 a year), the courage to march to a different drummer (even when the most powerful country on earth wants the whole world to get involved in their illegal war), did I mention the arts, the language (only Italian is as romantic to my ears), retirement at 60, did I mention Paris and Provence?.......of course there is also LaFayette!
Feel free to add to the list, and Vive la France!
As I live in a very Francophile area of Brooklyn, I will attend on Sunday the largest "pétanque" competition in the country! People come from all over the US for this! Sand is poured over a four blocks area for the weekend, and thousands of people mingle and watch the playing teams throughout the day, sipping Perrier, Bordeaux, Beaujolais, Lillet and Pastis, nibbling on baguettes, croissants, napoleons, madeleines, macarons and more, sitting at terrasses to enjoy all the French restaurants in the area, and listening to French bands.... It is quite extraordinary!
As for "freedom fries", let us laugh!

Bastille Day represents, for me, the one day I will admit to the French in my bloodline.

Perhaps my reluctance stems from the embarrassment of watching my mother attempt to insert French recalled from her childhood into conversation with anyone even remotely French ( my French teacher, French Canadians, the waiter at a French restaurant - hell, that guy doesn't even really speak French).

It was so EuroWhore, all of it. I wanted to hide under the table cloth, would slowly side step away so I could pretend I was really with those people, over there. Maybe steal some cheese while I was at it.
