View Full Version : Sesame Street turns 40!

If you use Google or have read the news, you'd probably know about the fact that Sesame Street is turning 40. How times have changed! I remember when the Cookie Monster lived up to his name, eating any cookie he found (and everything else for that matter) with great abandon. I remember counting with the Count (A-HA-HA-HA! 8-8-bats!). I remember Oscar the Grouch and his less than pleasant demeanor. And, one of my favourites, Snuffle-up-a-Guess (how do you spell that, anyways??) I remember Ernie (Hey Rubber Duckie!) and Bert (I never knew how intelligent pigeons were).
Ah.. how it's changed over the years and become more clean (I remember reading an editorial recently about the upcoming 40th and the commentator mentioned this -- and he was right!). No longer does it seem like a street from the inner city but rather a street from the 'burbs. I never quite got Elmo (and apparently he did not so nice things to kids language skills).

So what do you remember the most about Sesame Street?

One thing I remember most is that everyone who was anyone was on it. I had a discussion with my mother, about two years ago--about the song Chris Brown did for the show (before the whole Chris Brown scandal) and she commented that, "You know you're a big deal when you're on Sesame Street."
From Maya Angelou to India.Arie, to the Backstreet Boys, Elton John, Tyra Banks, the Goo Goo Dolls, Whoopi Goldberg, Barbara Walters, Nina Simone...
Everyone's been on the Street and I think it's fabulous.

I just wanted to say that...
The letter C has always been good enough for me.
Our family did not have a television until I was in Kindergarten so I missed out on a lot of Sesame Street. However, I love Jim Henson and I <3 <3 <3 so many of his muppet creations. Some of my favorites are in Labrynth and Dark Crystal. The Muppet Show was a Sunday evening staple in our household for a number of years. They had an exhibit at EMP in Seattle last spring/summer called, "Jim Henson's Fantastic World." It was SO COOL!

My mom had the BEST babysitter for me. All she had to do was turn a knob, make sure snacks were handy and lock the door behind her. I'd sit mesmerized for hours.
Happy Birthday, SS!
To celebrate, I let my guy buy me a shirt with your birthyear on it. It's yellow and kind of reminds me of a slightly worn Big Bird. :)

My absolute favorite sketch ever!!!!! Bookmarked on YouTube. And here's an interesting little tidbit. When they were creating all the characters for the show of course they gendered everyone. But with Grover, although he is a male, they intentionally made his character fairly androgynous. Maybe that's why we were (are) such good friends. Oh, and how many times did Grover do drag in his skits?!?!?!?!?!
Near.......far! :D

Bump.
Because who doesn't need a little Sesame Street happiness during the day?
Not too mention this would work in June's 'Chickens a Fowl Topic' thread as well (well it would)...

A vintage Sesame Street episode that was taken off air after Cookie Monster and Grover became established with specific voices and personality.

I didn't become a huge fan of Sesame Street until my boys came along...
no day was complete without watching SS together - whether it was early morning, afternoon or on the weekends!
My boys loved....
Kermit the Frog - all his antics as a news reporter!
Cookie Monster - gotta have cookies!
Ernie and Bert - :rubberducky: <~ Ernie drove Bert nuts with his ducky!!!
Miss Piggy was my favorite! *hehe*
Big Bird and Snuffalufagus - who could resist such adorable creatures?
Sesame Street = Good Times!
PS/ loved all the music artists that came to sing on the show!

Memories of Sesame Street and my son are some of my best! Then his girls while little. A grand generational connection!
I also have a foreign born friend that arrived from Poland at age 3 and says she indeed, learned English from Sesame Street. Kewl, huh?
I love that Big Bird!!!

The best ever. I've actually got a furry monster at home that sings that song, my sister gave it to me a couple of years ago for v-day.
True story: When I was little my dad brought me to Montreal. I remember this one neighborhood looked a lot like Sesame street, with the high steps up to people's stoops and the clotheslines and stuff. I was SO JAZZED about that. I was convinced for the longest time that Sesame street was in Montreal.

I love that!
I thought Sesame Street was magical. I even tried to find it one summer. But every night I would come home at dusk, replete with sadness that it had not been discovered. I now know why; because it's in Montreal ; )
By the way, there's an updated version of Manahmana. It's cute too. But truth be told I'm a girl that loves originals!

True story-the "Manama Na" tune was originally written for a Swedish sex pseudo-documentary. It was also used by British comedian Benny Hill in his skits.
I remember how well the show dealt with the death of Mr. Hooper.

I live in Brooklyn, NY.
Every day I walk through streets that look like the Sesame Street neighborhood, and I half-expect trash cans to produce Oscar, and for Big Bird to walk out of a bodega.
I am so glad I have a magical memory of what a big city could be!

Just think, Sesame Street turns 45 next year! Can hardly believe it's been that long, now. I gave up television some years ago, yet I watch it infrequently when I happen to be visiting with friends, but I'd say some of the best television shows I ever watched were with my boys. I absolutely loved, Sesame Street!
Some of the most memorable skits I remember were skits involving Miss Piggy (Pigs in Space!), the Swedish Chef (I loved the Mexican Lobsters!) and of course, so many other muppet characters too; but I liked the mini-news series anchored by Kermit (News Flash!!!). *lol*
Here's my favorite 'news flash' by Kermit the Frog:
