In this tough economy, particularly, we all have to watch our pennies and can't afford to waste money on products that don't appear or perform as expected. What things have you bought - it can be from simple to expensive, novelty items to serious - that did not turn out like you anticipated or as advertised? Is there something about a product that you wished you'd known before you bought it?

Tell us what the product was and the issue(s) with it. You can also use the thread to ask about a product you're considering purchasing and see if anyone else has it and what their experience is with it.

Pics appreciated when possible.

Cool idea Stearns, I'll have to give it some thought, 'cause we usually do so much research prior to buying anything. This is going to be a mind bender. You know how my memory is...not.

Ok, I said this can be about any purchase. The first thing I ever bought with my very first dollar saved (25 cents a week allowance) was a Slinky. I was mesmerized by the commercials, particularly the walking down the stairs. I couldn't wait to get one and have it do all the things I saw on tv. As many of us Slinky-victims know, the toy was a FAIL at doing more than one (two at the most) walk-over. I felt disillusioned and ripped off at the ripe old age of 6. Scarred for life, I tell ya.

He wasn't recommended... Unfortunately, the one we loved was diagnosed with cancer and is likely to pass away... :( The guy that I just fired was doing the lawn of our neighbor so I asked him to step in... and it has not been an easy ride of it.

THIS time I asked for referrals and got a guy that actually has a license and has worker's comp for his workers... I like that a lot... means he means business AND he takes care of his peeps... And, yes, a good gardener actually DOES do sprinkler systems, upgrades, as well as maintenance.

We still miss Luis and pray for his family all the time...

It's a white plastic container with a blue lid that you put litter waste in and then allegedly turn the handle and it dumps the waste in a plastic bag, seals the odor, etc.

I bought one a few years ago and it was a cheap piece of crap - no pun intended. The plastic bin kept popping apart at the seams and the handle wouldn't turn. I had to return it.

I think you're talking about Super Elastic Bubble Plastic.

You're not the only one it didn't work for. One woman blogged about how much she cried when it didn't do as advertised.

Just as a side note: Wiki says, "Chemically, the bubbles contained polyvinyl acetate dissolved in acetone, with plastic fortifiers added. Besides the obvious potential for messes when letting children play with liquid plastic, the substance also emitted noxious fumes. The fumes could become concentrated inside the straw, so users had to be careful never to inhale through the straw while inflating their balloons."

Maybe this is the reason for your memory and spelling issues at such a young age as yourself? j/k

Recently, I used some Mother's sealant (Sorry, Stearns, don't know how to post pics), and it was terrible to try to get off the car. I was so glad I did a general test area, first. Usually I never use Mother's and it was sitting around for a year, never used, so maybe that was the problem.

Besides the obvious potential for messes when letting children play with liquid plastic, the substance also emitted noxious fumes. The fumes could become concentrated inside the straw, so users had to be careful never to inhale through the straw while inflating their balloons."

durrrrrr, what did you use to remove/buff the wax? Could it have been the cloth that made the scratches? Always Microfiber!

Recently, I used some Mother's sealant (Sorry, Stearns, don't know how to post pics), and it was terrible to try to get off the car. I was so glad I did a general test area, first. Usually I never use Mother's and it was sitting around for a year, never used, so maybe that was the problem.

durrrrr, If you want to get that wax off and fix the very slight scratches, try using this stuff: http://www.autogeek.net/wg2000.html and then rewax with something else.

<---wondering if anyone would actually post on a car detailing thread if I started one.

nope, wasnt a cloth, i also always use microfiber. that turtle wax ice is just no good.

i ended up using "Mothers" and didnt have any problems. i would guess that the mothers that you had for a year or so, yeah, it could of been the problem. i always throw mine out at the end of the year and buy brand new next time along with new microfibers cloths.

Thanks for the link, i will order some and try it

I use Wolfgang for sealant, and Pinnacle for shine (wax).

I just picked up some Meguiar's All Wheel Cleaner and I love it. I used to just use soap/water because the brake dusk came off easy enough, but I really like this stuff.

And yes, I think that durrrr is right....is it about how long I had the sealant sitting around.

Gardeners that are not licensed and bonded... You should see the golf course sprinkler system we have in our backyard... Literally... an industrial sized sprinkler head... It's gonna cost us $900 with the guy who IS licensed and bonded to fix that plus put in a new shut off valve for the system... :(

I had to tell him to wait a while before we do it...

Call a plumber. I've installed a few irrigation systems, one on a golf course. There is no special training to maintain or install them. Only special equipment to install them.
A sprinkler co. is going to be the most expensive fix, next probably a full service landscape co. I think I would give a plumber a shout out. It can't hurt. (actually, I think I would look for a retired plumber who does "odd"/side jobs.)

LOL yep it's grand getting old, now where is my water... the cat just freeked out scratching at her ear...... god I hope the mites aren't back. :|

If she's got mites don't use the stuff from the vet to clear them up. I've always used Vitamin E Oil. Clean her ears with it REAL WELL for a few days and it'll clear them up. The oil suffocates the mites and is non-toxic for your cat.

OK, it's early am, 2000.. I just get home from work and my then g/f and I are watching TV at 6am.. A comersial for this new and AWESOME product comes on.. We watch and she wants to get it.. We go back and forth, me saying that I don't care, I don't shave my legs, she is indesisive.. THEN the timer starts.. We'll get a free gift, but ONLY if we call in the next 15 minutes.. Yes, she ended up calling and getting the stuff..

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Swd-VnLVwhY?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Swd-VnLVwhY?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

ummm.. When it came in, she tried it and is put to tears with the pain of every hair on her leg being ripped from the roots.. Of course, I've GOT to see what the big deal is.. Holy Mary and Jeebus.. I think I GREW nads from the pain!

Moral of the story? Don't get nadded..

This weekend there was a minor accident and we needed to purchase a bottle of benadine solution. Ok...this is where the original "rocking" shoe came from. I don't know how any of the cheaper versions by reebok, sketchers, curves, etc..work, but MBTs are really good! (expensive though) A friend told me to get them for work to help my feet and back...and they DO work!

One caution....don't buy a pair of these shoes (from wherever) and think you can wear them all day right away...you'll give yourself shin splints if you wear them for a prolonged period of time before allowing your body to get used to the balance shift....just an FYI.

Discounted Ikea furniture. I bought a bunk bed, flat packed on sale (very cheap) from Ikea. Everything was so off that after 2 days- the use of a drill, a circular saw, 10 varieties of bolts and wood glue- to put it together, I still ended up with something that looked like playground equipment. The child asked if she could have a pool at the end of the bed – so she could just slide into it in the mornings.

I attempted to join an Ikea’s Anonymous support group but the door handle fell off when I tried to enter the room to the meeting.

All the stuff that I've purchased from IKEA is like that, Converse - even without being discounted. I purchased a wardrobe gizmo, had fits putting it together. Apparently, wrong instructions. So a straight cis male and his wife came over to help. The sucker's heavy. He and I grunted, sweated and swore. We did it ... when his wife instructed us!

I do the song, with my hands telling as much of the story as my voice. The little kids are enthralled. Especially with the ghoul. And, with repetition, they sing the chorus, making their hands into bunny ears. It's really a lot of fun.

And, yes, you geezers should be on alert to the more refined things Lolol

I thought I was pretty inclusive in my earlier description!

This is about all product fails, so yes to revealing any disappointing sex-related accoutrements and products!

These suck. Or at least I think they do. But then again, after 6 in 4 months...maybe it's me... :|

At least He has a use for this oversized paper thin airline blanket. I think it will remain a rip-off until available in technicolor.

Sex harness FAIL..

Any harness that has an elastic band is a total fail.. It moves around and you slip out :( When a customer brings it to the register I always ask them.. "ummm.. are you planning on fucking with this? 'Cause it isn't worth it.." They are nice for blow jobs, because of all the freedom of movement, or for packing, maybe.. other then that.. Total fail..
