View Full Version : What word are you tired of?
AtLast

Odd as this may sound, I'm totally tired of the word hot. Or, maybe I am tired of people assuming it means the same thing to everyone?
Here, it gets used mostly about sex and looks, it seems like. Just feels cliché. What could be more individually defined than those two things?
Is there one word or phrase that you feel this way (or another) about? And Why? And of course, disagree with me!

I really agree with you. Never thought about what my response inside is when I just hear that word outloud. It IS a yikes kind of word. Lots of just ugly images hate brings up. Lately, politics have been spewing it all over and it makes me feel like nothing is going to done so that people can get back on top of their lives again- plus all the biogtry and anti-queer, anti-trans stuff. Other anti-stuff too that is just plain hate mongering.
Thanks for this!

Conservative.......
i have to admit i am one of the dumbasses that use this word for everything...
it means good when it comes from me... i also tend to use the word sexy for something that is just good...
i think that i started doing it in response to folks that have the tendency to turn everything into a sexual connotation... i had a friend that imagined a smile as a come on... whoever it was smiling... so.. the evil started there...
yes AL... i agree with you whole brainedly... and i vow to myself at this moment that i am going to never say the word hot to someone like my mom or the mail man again...
im done... thats hot...

I call my cats sexy on a regular basis and they beam at me!!! Cause they are sexy boys!
I am afraid my own verbal ticks include many a "like," "um" and "yaknow." I wouldn't mind having better control of that.
I don't mind the word "hot," but I'm pretty tired of "hot mess."
I'm tired of the current racist connotations of the word "immigrant."
I am tired of hearing people say the tea party is "libertarian" when it simply is not - at least not socially.
I am sick of the term "politically correct" used as a get-out-of-jail-free card for saying awful things.
I am tired of hearing the word "retarded" used casually to refer to anything or anybody a person doesn't enjoy.
LOVE yes that four letter word that sems to me to be spoken to often out of obglitaion or someother need but not ment.. show it in your actions not just hollow words

Can't is one that gets on my nerves, especially when it is just used as an excuse with a bunch of rationalizations that can be overcome.
Big difference between someone saying I can't that really can't and someone that just doesn't want to do something. just say I don't want to! or No!
I think I may have a crabby hang over from the election results....
:seeingstars:
Akin to "can't" is "BUT".
"I'd would do that, but......"
How about "I would do that and I'm not going to...."
AND is a better substitute for the word "but", which should be entirely eliminated from western vocabulary.
"But" and "can't" are EXCUSE WORDS.
Addendum:
BUT is a wholly unnecessary word. However, "butts" can be very nice.

I guess after working a lot of years in education and government related jobs before going on my own put me in the midsts of this behavior. Then it happened anyway, but not as much.

Had the oppurtunuty to do just that a while ago. I was at work and walked up to group of people talking just in time to hear, "That's so gay!" and responded, "That's so straight!" in the same condescending tone. There was a group pause, and then someone said, "I never thought of it that way." Another group pause...
Since then, I've not heard the phrase from any one of them - instead I'm hearing words like weird, stupid, not right.

I hardly ever have a solid handle on the intricate psychology of my own motivations. When I say I don't know its because I really don't know why I did something. Sometimes it takes me hours, days, weeks, years or decades to really understand why I did something.

Me, too! And I am begining to think that the left-wing along with the right wing media is helping her out in getting in position for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination! Can't turn on a single show on MSNBC without something on about her! Doesn't matter if what is said points to her having no brain, she is getting a hell of a lot of free media attention and name recognition. Making me crazy!!
And after the mid-term elections, I think she could be elected!! They will just put some moderate republican on the ticket that is respected (and does have a brain)!

One of my college teachers had us do a little experiment....go through the weekend (it was a M W F class) and, every time we would have said 'sorry' to replace it with "I apologize". Though the point of the assignment wasn't strictly just to notice the amount in which we do, or not, say 'sorry' that was definitely a side effect. Everyone came back on Monday realizing just how much we say it, and, how often we do or do not mean it.

I hear you Sachita, but also know from my own experience that the most wonderful intentions don't always work out....we got a full-size rough collie, expecting to keep her forever, but found that she was simply more dog than we could handle. She wasn't happy...and we weren't either. I ended up giving her to a friend of the family who adores her (and she him)...and she's now a happy dog. What pisses me off is people who get to that "oops" point and just dump them rather than find a better fit for them....and, even more, those that randomly breed puppies and kittens (either for money or just because they're cute). If you aren't a breeder who knows what they're doing...I truly believe all animals should be spayed or neutered.
As far as the word I'm (more than) tired of....I'm with the "whatever" crowd. Ugh! Disagree with me...fine. "Whatever" me....now I'm pissed.

I'm tired of people wanting to "touch base" about something. I hear this all the time at work.
This overused phrase reminds me of a story shared with me by someone years ago...
Said person worked in an office with a manager who constantly used that phrase -- "let's touch base on that". So, unbeknownst to the manager, a small poster of Wrigley Field was tacked up on the break room bulletin board -- with a push pin "runner". Every time anyone heard the manager say "touch base" they were to advance the runner. The staff took bets on how many runs would be scored by the end of the week. I believe it was many more than my dear Cubbies could ever hope to tally.

normalcy is legit. the made up word that people commonly use is normalacy.
Think you'll find normality is English usage, normalcy is American usage. Not heard of or seen it in Brit language usage, literature or media.
Never heard or seen t"other one you're telling me is a mistake.
Another over~used word I"m coming to loathe is "Boom!" as congratulatory exclaimation.

How many times does one have to say cattywampus (aka catawampus) to become tired of it?
