Any other poker fans and/or players out there?

I started playing in February of this year. I'm a big fan of no-limit hold 'em tournaments. I've received some professional training on tournament strategies, so I'm much more comfortable there.

I'm sure I'll feel better about cash games if I can get to a camp, but for now it's too much of a gamble for me; and I'm just not willing to risk it anymore.

I've done pretty well in tournaments in the short time I've been playing and have more big ones lined up..........one this Saturday, as a matter of fact.

Anyone else?

I enjoy watching it or playing with friends (I prefer the camaraderie of friendly poker even if a few $$ are at stake). Interestingly, I'll be in Vegas in Feb so I may get to enjoy a few games of 21 and some of the penny slots and good stogies. :)

You are far better at it than me, from what I've seen you write about.

Do you know the dates of your trip?

If it works out, we can head down there for a weekend getaway.......maybe get a few others together, as well.

Right now Feb 1-6th but no students are registered yet for the class. I expect that to change. :)

I play Hold Em but haven't played for money yet. I've been practicing on Pokerstars.com. It's free to sign up and the people that play on there are usually pretty good so it's cool to learn a bit. Wondering if there is a game going at the reunion.

I was talking about that with Medusa (I think). I think that perhaps we could do some simple poker games with small antes (5 cent, 10 cent and 25 cent). I'd love to introduce some to a variation that my friends made (Gould's Gold) that's an interesting pot builder. :)

I've been playing here and there online, and occasionally I win a hand, but I dont feel like I know how im winning, or why. I feel like there is a lot more strategy to it, then just trying to get a certain hand. That or perhaps im reading too much into things.

Hey Logicaly...

There is indeed more strategy to it!

It's certainly too much to go into here. Reading about it is challenging, in my opinion, because they try and cover everything before you even have the basics down.

What game are you playing?

Good poker strategy is mostly about betting strategy/bankroll management. Sign up with one of the major poker sites...they usually give you a free bankroll of 'play money', as well as having a wide variety of games available.

FullTilt and PokerStars are the perennial big guys, while Cake Poker is an attractive option for newer players.

Also, the 2+2 forums are probably the biggest poker community online: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/

I LOVE me some poker and have gotten lucky a few times :)

I dont have a strategy and I suck at bluffing but the thrill of the game is enough to keep me coming back. I wont mention (oh yes I will!) the time I went to a biggo party in SoCal and there was a giant table of Butches all playing poker and I busted up in there and took ALL of their monies. :shocking:

Thanks!! :) Unfortunately I don't have any success stories to tell for myself, but my honey took 18th place (out of 304 players) at the Golden Nugget event we played in, and then 3rd place in a small daily tourny at Imperial Palace... so that was awesome!

I'm playing in the ladies event at the Borgata Summer Open in Atlantic City this Saturday. Hope my cards/luck are better there! :)

Thanks! Unfortunately, I only played about 3 hours. Besides having a table bully to my left, I had horrible, awful, crappy cards - and the very few times I had a good starting hand, someone had a better one. Oh well... that's poker, folks! :cigar2:

I'm going to try to redeem myself next week in another tournament in the same series.... hoping for better cards! :)

It's official - I am transferring to our Phoenix office in September! yippee!!

Anyone who knows me knows that I checked out the casinos in the area before anything else LOL. I am thrilled to have a few to choose from - pretty close by I might add! Don't get me wrong, I love playing poker in Atlantic City, but it's a 2-hour drive in good traffic... yuck.

Have any of you played poker in any of the AZ casinos???

I'm hoping to get a couple of cashes so I can play in THE big ones!

I have checked out the Harrah's schedules also. I'm sure I'll be making my way to Rincon at some point. It's about a 5-hour drive, but I'll likely hop a plan instead. Have to get settled here in AZ first. I did play at Harrah's AK-Chin on Saturday - nothing to speak of. VERY small, and a lot of grumpy, anti-social players.

I am going to play next Saturday at Casino Arizona, they have a ladies tournament, so I hope that's a better experience :)

I'm already looking forward to making a trip to Vegas by year-end! :)

5-hour road trips are perfect! You know what I just found out??? The final table starts that weekend. !!!

I didn't even know it when we planned the trip. It starts that Saturday and goes for 4 days. ...ought to be plenty of poker action everywhere that weekend!

On a separate note... We have learned that when we leave out all the bs gambling we tend to do, we have been in the black with poker. We're about to start a couple of months of tournaments here in Reno. My fingers are crossed for some big paydays!!!

Yeah, those other games (or as some of my poker degen buddies like to call them "the dark side") can really screw up your bankroll!

I started 2010 with a bang... cashed 4 tournaments in a row... then went on a downhill slide from hell for a couple of months. Stopped playing for a couple of months to get my head back on straight, cashed in a WSOP satellite series in May, then everything with my relocation started and I've only played maybe 3 times since then! :: gasp:: So I am THRILLED to be in a state that has poker (and near where I live! yay!) and to be so close to Vegas and Los Angeles... I just can't wait to get back into it!

I really am going to try to make that trip first week in November; let's touch base offline about where you''all are staying, playing, etc. I won't be able to go for 4 days, but maybe 2.

I spent a little time at a tournament table with pro Mike Matusow. I was not the least bit impressed with how he behaved or with his play. He was drunk, knocked his full stack of chips across the table, and called someone a "f*cking idiot" (in a "joking way", of course).

Disgusting.

On a happier note, my wife and I took first and second in a tournament!! First time we managed that one!

Wow! Congrats!!!!!!

I haven't been able to cash in any tourny's I've played in lately. Won a $50 bounty in a tourny last week, bubbled in 11th place in another tourny (I did get a free entry into another tourny, so at least that's something), and my partner and I finished 15th today in the Jack and Jill tournament, out of 105 couples - but they only paid 10 spots. UGH.

RE: Mike Matusow.... sadly, I liked him better when he was on drugs; however, that said, I never really respected him as a person or a poker player. Too bad you didn't have someone better at your table. Maybe next time! :)

Hopefully next time I post I'll have good news! :)

I finally cracked the code to winning in Arizona! Actually, I don't have a real strategy except to slow down my game and adjust, adjust, adjust! But, FINALLY, I cashed in 2 tournaments - 1 yesterday (we agreed to a 2-tier chop) and last weekend we chopped 10 places.

The craziest hand yesterday - I pushed all in with pocket 7's. I flopped quad 7's, and the guy who called me rivered a full house, but it was no good, I doubled up!

I'm realllly looking forward to Vegas in May!

Anyone else have any good stories???

Thinker - did you make the trip in October? If so, how was it?

I am considering going Feb 20th (President's Day) weekend.

Locally, I've cashed in the last 3 of 4 casino tournaments I've played in. Twice in ladies tournaments, and my guy partner and I cashed in the Jack 'n Jill tournament at Casino Arizona two weeks ago!

I'm playing in a tournament on Sunday that I qualified for by making one or more final tables, and Saturday will be my first time playing in a big stack, big bounty tournament ($100 bounties!)

Yes, we did go in October....played in the same Caesar's tournament we all played in that time. I made it to the final table and finished 8th.

Great job on 8th place finishes! Yes, I agree... go for top 3 next time! :)

I had hit a cold streak the last few weeks, but broke it last weekend when we chopped the remaining prize pool 7 ways in the ladies tournament at Casino Arizona (there were 111 players to start and they paid 10 places total).

Celebrating a month early works for me too!!! I am terrible at creating plans...if someone else is better at this, please feel free. I could make down there Oct/Nov. I usually plan time off around that time of the year.

PS Maybe we could see what kinds of tournaments are going on around then?? Anything semi big? I am not into large buy in tourneys, although I could definitely get into some satellite action. I am getting excited just thinking about it.

I don't mind working on the planning part, and Thinker being such a sweetheart would probably help :) (no pressure! LOL)

RedFlag, I'm sorry that time frame doesn't work for you :( The problem before that is August is the big Reunion bash, and people have a tough time making too many travel plans close together. For me, personally, September is an insanely busy month, so that's out, and anything sooner is going to conflict with plans I already have, or just be too close to other travel plans. Do you work weekends? What is the absolute last day you can take vacation? Maybe late Oct would work for everyone?

RE: big series tournaments -- I don't know of any, and this is typically too soon for casinos to post them. There are plenty of daily tournaments with buy ins anywhere from $25 (I don't recommend those) to $250+. I like to play at the morning tournament at Caesars ... $65 buy in, usually about 4 to 5 tables, and Harrah's has decent daily tourny's as well $60 - $120 buy in. I really want to play at Binions my next trip! I said I would the last 2 trips but didn't. There are so many places to play, it's hard to choose! Thinker can chime in on this as well! :)

I'll take a look at my schedule and post some suggested dates here - I hope we can make this happens, it would be so fun!

Andrea, I used to tell people to find a learner game at your local casino. Sometimes they have lessons and then turn it into a very small limit game. As well, although you may not learn everything because it goes so fast, start playing online poker at a FREE place. PokerStars is my favorite but you could even learn playing FB poker. Just know that you will learn how the game is played, not how to play the game...lol.

Then Read Read Read...Maybe even plan a home game. Good luck!

I agree, playing online at a free poker site is one of the best ways to learn the game and the rules. The etiquette doesn't always fully translate to real life but that's easily picked up, and you can always ask the dealer for help by saying "is it on me?" or "what are my options?" if you aren't sure. It's like anything else, practice goes a long way. Also, try a web search to see if there are free poker leagues in your area; many leagues play at bars and restaurants, it's free, you get points for prizes and it's a GREAT way to learn and practice.

And if you have questions, post them here, I'm happy to answer if I can!

Good luck! :)

Who's got plans to play poker soon??? My poker schedule is kind of crazy these next few weeks! :) I played in a ladies tournament yesterday, we chopped 5 ways (out of 86 players). Next weekend is the Jack n Jill tournament which is always fun but a real rollercoaster. I also have a home game and a league city championship to play in this week. The following weekend is another ladies tournament!

How about you all???

World Series of Poker 2012 is finally being televised on ESPN! I watched the first 2 episodes last night. I think next year I might play in one of the lower buy-in tournaments. It would be my first time playing in it even though I've been in Vegas during the WSOP the last 3 years!

I won a satellite tournament a week ago for a 3-day poker series this weekend. I'm so excited that I woke up at 6am and couldn't go back to sleep this morning! LOL Today is Tournament #1!

How wonderful!

We both play poker, and enter as many tournaments as we can...but you are certainly a few levels above us!

Play YOUR game, and here's wishing you the "nuts" more often than the other players.:rrose:

Ps...i meant kick their butts! Geez lol

Wow, it's been a long time since I posted here!! That trip was a blast, so was the one in February! Going again in May, then back in July for the World Series of Poker (playing in the Ladies Event!).

Our local casinos have come a long way in offering more tournaments, which I'm very glad for, but Vegas is still my favorite poker destination!

Not a tournament but my honey and I will be in Reno for the next few days. I can be found at the blackjack table.

So excited to be going again.

Yes, Vegas is my favorite too. I went about every six months when I lived in Phoenix.

Barring any disasters, we're going to Las Vegas in December!! It'll be a short trip, but I'll get in as many poker tournaments as I can while I'm there!

They're all repeats right now, so you aren't missing anything. I tried watching a repeat tourney, but I remember the hands already played so it's no fun. :(

I hate that. And the cable provider has a lot to do with it. When I lived in NY, the episodes were all numbered so you could easily keep track of where you where, regardless of what night it was playing/repeating or if you streamed it. The cable company here (Cox) doesn't do that, so you basically have to watch the first 5 minutes to figure out if you've seen it already, and as you probably know, after watching that much poker, sometimes you don't realize you've seen that episode until 20 minutes in. UGH. Anyway, I did watch most of the first episode of the 2016 Main Event on YouTube the other night. Will try to watch the rest tonight.
