Hi! Congratulations on working to learn something new. I have a couple of recommendations for you. When you have a chance, you might want to check out http://www.lionbrand.com/ and http://www.ravelry.com/. Both have patterns for all experience levels and tutorials. They also have online communities and forums to ask questions and share your work on. The best part is that they are free. I am big on free, LOL!
If you have an specific issues, I would be glad to try and help. Knitting and Crocheting are my "thing".

i just recently taught myself both knitting and crochet to decide which one i wanted to proceed with. i ended up going with crochet. projects work up much faster and i found it easier to understand patterns. granted i think there are better patterns out there for knitting but i'm gonna stick with crochet.
i have discovered that nice yarns are much easier and more fun to work with. if you ever want to splurge by yourself some yarn by Malabrigo. it's all wool and so incredibly soft. i didn't know wool could feel like this. and the colors- oh the colors are amazing.
i recommend the stich n bitch books. the woman who has written them has both knitting and crochet books. it's what ive been using as reference and it's filled with pretty good patterns. i bought mine at jo-ann fabrics and used one of their 40% off coupons so it was cheap.
anyways, happy stitching! (and i'm subscribing to the thread!)

have learned to knit
just started my 3rd sweater
I learned using books
and you tube vidoes
search you tube for things like
knit stitch
purl stitch
how to cast on
how to cast off
how to increase
how decrease
I love the speciality yarns
Knitty.com is good for patterns
I know we have specialty yarn shops where they have classes here
maybe there is something like that where you are.
my first projects in knitting came from a book called "the knitters stash"
there was a set of projects that were 8 linen washcloths. I used cotton yarn cause linen is expensive.
there were lots of patterns for these wash cloths (they were basic to complex) Because they were small (8x8 to 10x10 inches) they were not overwhelming
the yarn store that created the patterns for the book is The Yarnery.com

Welcome Bit to the thread I'm glad you knit and crochet yes I do like crocheting better then knitting for me. A hat would be nice and yes it is cold we have like 30 inches of snow here in NJ so its not very nice right now!! Dogs are having a tough time of it poor fellas but are adapting well..
YIKES, Gail! That's way too much snow for your area, isn't it?
We've had almost none this year so far and I am QUITE content for it to stay that way.
I discovered that all crochet threads are not created equal. My favorite by far is Cebelia; oh my gosh it feels so good when you use it, and it cooperates so beautifully! I've been trying to force myself to use other threads and I'm just not enjoying it nearly as much.

It is snowing here too...but we just have a dusting. Good luck getting through all the snow. Time to pull out the crochet and make something warm and cuddly. I actually just finished making two stuffed animals. Pokemon - a Pikachu and a Riachu. I'd post a picture if I knew how, LOL.

Beginner Sock Pattern
This sock pattern for women works best with a sock weight or skinny sport weight yarn - anything from Socka Colours to Patons Look at Me! baby sport works well. My current favourite is the Look at Me! because it is inexpensive, easy to find, comfy to wear and comes in some of the wildest colours I've ever seen. The socks in the photo are made of Look at Me! - and believe me, people do! I have also made these socks in Wendy's DK cotton, using ribbing all the way down the cuff and on the top of the foot to give the socks more stretch, since cotton is not elastic.
Materials:
100 grams sock yarn of your choice
Have some contrast colour yarn handy for the toes if you are making socks for a long foot, or if you want to extend the cuff length.
Size 2 to 3 US (3 mm) double pointed needles
Gauge:
28 sts= 4 inches
Instructions
CO 56 sts. Join and mark beg of round.
Rib in K2, P2 rib for 7 inches or desired leg length.
Divide For Heel
Put one half of the stitches (28), centered on the beginning of the round, on a needle. (The easiest way to do this is to knit the first 14 sts, then turn and slip the 14 sts on the other side of the marker onto the needle). Place the other half on a holder - these stitches will be the instep later on. Work the heel flap over the 28 sts (using contrast colour if desired):
P across the back of the heel flap, slipping the first stitch.
Turn.
Sl1, K1 across.
Turn.
Repeat these 2 rows till you have worked 28 rows (count the slipped stitches which should be 14).
Turning The Heel
You are making short rows to shape a little cup for the heel.
Starting on the right side, knit halfway across the heel flap (14 sts) plus 2 (16). Sl1, K1, psso. K1. Turn.
Sl1, P5, P2tog, P1. Turn.
Sl1, K across to the gap (where you turned), slip the first stitch before the gap, K the stitch on the other side, psso, K1. Turn again.
Sl1, P across to the gap. P2tog across the gap. P1. Turn.
Continue in this manner until all the heel flap stitches have been used up.
Join the first colour back in if you made a contrasting heel. Now you will be picking up the stitches on the sides of the heel flap and knitting around the sock again. Those stitches you put aside before doing the heel flap have waited patiently and will be put back into use!
By slipping the first stitch of each row on the heel flap, you have made a lovely chain edge which will be easy to pick up. You should be able to get 14 stitches on each side, but don't worry if you get more or less than this. I usually pick up the stitches on one needle and knit them onto another, twisting them by knitting into the back of the loop.
Knit across those patient instep stitches, or continue them in ribbing, then pick up and knit the same number of stitches on the other side of the heel flap. Knit one half of the heel flap stitches (8 or 9) onto this needle. Mark the centre as the beginning of the round. You now have three needles with rather a lot of stitches on them - one for each side of the gusset and one for the instep. If you have a spare needle in about the same size you can put the instep stitches on two needles instead - I find this is much easier to work.
Now you want to make a row of decreases on each side of the heel flap to get back to the same number of stitches you began with (56).
Knit to 3 sts from the end of needle 1, K2tog, K1.
Rib across the instep sts.
On needles 3 and 4, K first st, Sl1, K1, psso. Knit to end.
K next round plain (ribbing the instep if desired).
Repeat decrease round every other round until you have 56 sts again.
Continue with knit sole and ribbed instep (just follow the established rib) until the foot measures 2½" less than your foot length. I use my 7" double points to give me a rough idea of when to begin the toe shaping, since my foot is 9½" long.
Shape Toe:
Join contrast colour if using such.
Knit one round plain.
Decrease round:
K to 3 sts from end of first needle, K2tog, K1.
K first st on instep needle, Sl1, psso, knit to 3 sts from end of instep needle (or end of needle 3 if you split the instep sts), K2tog, K1.
Last needle, K1, Sl1, psso, K to end.
Knit one round plain.
Continue alternating plain and decrease rounds until you have half the number of sts you began with (28, or 7 on each of 4 needles). Then decrease on every round until you have 12 sts left all together.
Cut off the yarn leaving an 18" tail. Thread a needle with this yarn tail and graft these sts together using the Kitchener stitch or just thread the end through all the sts and draw them up tightly. Weave the end of the yarn into the back of the stitches (turn the sock inside out).
Weave in all your yarn ends, making sure to leave no knots. Knots in a sock will give you nasty blisters! There, you've made a sock! Welcome to the new addiction...
Now you can make the mate. Handmade socks don't always match. If you want to, you can create a wardrobe of single unmatched but coordinating socks and wear a different pair every time!

I'm really in the mood for crocheting today and need needles for a throw I want to make...will go to AC Moore for a book and some yarn..how is everyone doing today and how was your New Year??
Our New Year was really quiet, Gail, and also really COLD. I am gonna start that hat this week, I think. I have green wool that I can just repurpose. The plan right now is to make a closely crocheted very warm hat that covers my ears without blocking my line of sight; so far I haven't been able to find a hat that covers my ears without also drooping down over my eyes so I guess it's time for some custom work!
Hope your New Year was lovely!

Yay! I am happy about this thread... pun intended. ;) Hahaha. I crochet, and in fact, almost always have a ball of yarn and a project in my purse. I find it extremely meditative and soothing.
I sew, too, and have been doing hand embroidery for more than twenty years; Mama taught me when I was a wee thing. For a while, I was quite fancy with it... I did Elizabethan blackwork for period costumes, custom work on heirlooms and wedding dresses and things, all just via word of mouth. I simply don't have that kind of time to dedicate to it anymore, but I still love it. Embroidery to me is like painting with thread.
Right now, I have two crochet projects going, both scarves, and a laptop sleeve I am embroidering for a friend... the laptop sleeve is really neat, it was made by a fair trade organization that employs and empowers women and girls in Uganda. It's printed with a design that she asked me to sew over, and gave me full creative license as far as stitches, colors, etc... Fun!

Right now I'm working on 2 pairs of socks: the first pair were supposed to be a Christmas present, the 2nd pair were going to be a birthday present (my sister saw the colour and immediately wanted them).
The 1st pair suffered from "second sock syndrome" - I just couldn't face working on another sock with all those tiny stitches and the heel turn which never looks good. So I didn't start it until after the new year. And I made the mistake of watching football - which meant I made a stupid mistake and had to rip out a lot of work!
The pair I started last night is with a different wool - - so I'm hoping I'll get more done before I get tired of it!

Have you tried doing them both at once? For me it's the ONLY way. All my socks are done two at once (http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/2mlsocks_start.htm) toe up using Judy's Magic Cast On (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/FEATmagiccaston.html) with a super easy, no wrap fleegle heel (http://fleeglesblog.blogspot.com/2006/11/leegles-toe-up-no-flap-no-hassle-sock.html).

Am in the process of knitting my first pair of socks and am finding that it is much easier than I thought it would be. The first sock is almost done. I didn't think I would like the DPN and the small stitches but I am finding it very relaxing.

Nightshade - thanks for the links. It looks interesting but I think I'll stick with the usual way for now. I get stressed out enough as it is - I can't imagine trying to do 2 at a time!
but I am sure I will try it at sometime in the future!
amiyesiam - I've done a few pairs but still not totally comfortable. Maybe it is because I am a self-taught knitter? A lot of stuff is trial and error - - but YouTube has been a big help!
lipstixgal - I find crochet difficult. I can never remember where the heck the hook goes on a double or treble crochet.
The socks I started last night are coming along nicely - - it is cuff down. I'm done the cuff so it is pretty easy for now - - at least I'll be able to watch football and not worry about stupid mistakes! ;)

I like knitting - I started on scarves, tried to make some kids sweaters. I want to do some more socks but then I think I'll attempt lace. If it works out then I might attempt the socks that Nightshade suggested.

The two at once is really easy. It was the third thing I did when I learned how to knit. I did a scarf, a sock and then two at once. Once you do it you'll be really pleased with how easy it is and how much it makes people gasp to see you doing it.

actually the most basic fingerless glove is a rectangle that you sew together and leave a hole for your thumb. I made a bunch of pairs recently with big chunky yarn and it only took about an hour and a half to make a pair.

Hmm.. maybe I can do that then. I'll have to look at see what I can find. I don't know about chunky yarn though because I will probably wear them the most when I'm computing. OK, that was silly. If I'm awake, I'm computing and I don't think I'll wear them when I'm asleep. I've got a really nice merino/cashmere blend worsted weight that I think would work well and not be irritating.

I agree, knitting is super fun. I totally think its butchly though, because in my head I'm like: I made this! With sharp objects!
I don't know how that's butch, actually, but it makes sense to me.
So far, I am working on rectangles, and I am making a checkerboard patterned rectangle that's really bright.
Before this I was working on interpretative rectangles, which means that I was trying to make rectangles but they weren't coming out rectangular.
One day I hope to knit a circle. ;-)

I teach knitting at my school (apart from French and Latin!) and I have boys in the classes, they love it, also some male teachers have come for instruction, so I think knitting butches make total sense! Sharp objects indeed, I always caution the kids, and besides, one can always use one's Swiss Army knife to cut yarn, can't one?
Couple of years ago I had a very butch middle schooler in knitting, and she was very good so she got to the point she could make a tank top (regular project for the girls at this point) but knowing how she loved boys' clothing, I told her she could make a vest instead, and that I would get other colours for her (we seemed to have an abundance of pastel!)......and she said very loudly : Yesssssssss!!!!

that damn sweater is done
the baby afghan is done
and the midnight blue socks (80% merino wool/20% silk) are done
I am now guilt free into my birthday yarn!!!!!!!
tomorrow I will start the second sock in a cream/with beautiful colors running though it (55% merino wool/30% silk/15% nylon)
it is heavenly and soft and girly

the second cream sock got finished
and I am on to a shawl
that I started 3 times
and had to rip back several times once started
now I am using a safety line
which I just learned about
it is when you take a piece of yarn and run it along your stitches on the needle(picking them up)
it means if you drop lace stitches or if you have to rip back you have a place where all your stitches are on the extra yarn and so you know where you are
hope that makes sense
you move the safety line forward as you go, making sure that everything before it is correct
what a life saver

Yesterday, I got my Tomten out of the corner where I had stuffed it when the shortrows misbehaved. Apparently a few months in the Penalty Box was good for it. I have lost some weight since I started it, but I'ma gonna stick with the original measurements, because it's meant to keep me warm this fall and the more of me it covers, the more effective it'll be. Weird question though....
I have weird hair. Really weird hair. It makes mad curls, it sticks to things, it scoffs at braids and stuff, it's highly susceptible to static electricity and humidity. I have some nice bits of silk laying around my stash and I was thinking of lining the hood. The fact that silk is supposed to be a ESPish insulator and will help keep the aliens from monitering my brain activity is a complete and total coincidence. But I do not have enough silk to line the rest, and since it's really only my crazy hair I'm worried about, I wasn't going to bother lining the rest of it. Would it be too weird for words if I just did the hood and not the body?

Like usual...
Working on several at once, yet I don't often have the desire to right now.
One is for the girl and will be similar to a quilted blanket.
Two others utilize the same colors and therefore being worked on.
Plus various cross-stitches...
So, with all that to work on...
Off to play a computer game.

So today I went to cast off and it was going perfectly until I ran out of yarn 2 stitches before the end.
Seriously.
And it was the best cast off I ever did!!!

I am not motivated, but I want to be!
I found Ravelry.com a knitter/spinner/crochet community
I discovered better yarns (generally not found at chain stores)
I discovered better supplies (again generally not found at chain stores)
Better doesn't mean the most expensive, it just means the tools that work best for me/make me happy. I also learned I don't have to love what is "popular" currently.
I spend serious time finding the right yarn, supplies and pattern before I start something. They all have to make me happy!
Good luck!

I have learned
that unfinished objects are called UFO's
that sometimes UFO's go into hibernation
that some people are poly knitters and must have multiple projects on the needles to be happy and some people are monogamous knitters and must finish one project at a time. Both ways are cool!!!

Ideas on decent baby yarns and where to find them in black and red?

actually I would say for a baby to get acrylic yarn or superwash wool so they can be washed. Hand wash stuff for babies is usually a no no LOL
lion brand, red heart, patons, all have baby yarns that are soft and have web sites.

Oh my..
Why haven't i browsed the hobbies section in this forum before?
i have subscribed to so many threads, and responding in this one because this is exciting to me...
Years ago, i would spend lots of time with my grandmother as a child.
One thing i hold very dear to me, was her teaching me to knit and crochet.
Also, a dear friend of mine taught me to do tatting, much fun as well. i'd love to revisit that one day as well.
Isolating myself for years and years, i let go of many hobbies of mine..
Merely not allowing myself to do things i love..Knitting and crocheting is one of them. Since being here in Oregon, i had the pleasure of being tasked with cleaning through some boxes and things Mr Mtn has been wanting to clean out, and i found some knitting books and magazines which belonged to His mother and started to go through them. A friend of Ours here We gave the yarn to, and will give some of the books but since then have decided that i will keep some for myself as well, i really want to get back into knitting and crocheting and creating some beautiful things again!
Love that i am taking my life back, and will love revisiting old hobbies as well as finding new hobbies.. Much looking forward to looking back in this thread & getting myself back into this! Especially now that my Nanny G can't knit or crochet anymore because of her eyesight, and alzheimer's.. But i would love to do this, for her especially.. <3
Thanks for this thread!

Chain row is too tight Leah. Relax. Practice chaining. I had to for the longest time. Another solution is to chain with a hook one size larger than hook for blanket. For example, I may use a J hook for chaining and a K hook for crocheting the actual square.

Perhaps that's because you forget to do a chain stitch "in the air" at the end of each row, so each row becomes smaller than the preceding one. It is a common mistake from beginners.

Damonk, thanks for the advice. I will try chaining a bit more. I got many sizes of hooks in the kit, so I will practice with the bigger ones.
Elle, I agree with you. I just turn the yarn around and start crocheting backwards down the other side. I think I need to take Damonk's advice and stick to chaining for a bit! I also have to learn how to make the loop at the very beginning.

Beginning loop, pull out enough yarn for about a 6 in tail. Pinch yarn between fingers, twist over so creates an x, grab strand to yarn skein, tighten.
I forgot, pull that strand through loop to tighten.
I'm a lefty so I do a lot of these techniques very different.

I love to crochet...especially in the winter... I'm wanting to learn to knit. There was a knitting circle in my town and I'm regretting not going since the sign for it is now down from the library where it was held :( And the place where I get my gooder yarn has closed and they had lessons also...I did try to learn from a DVD but I can only get so far (casting on) before I get hopelessly losted :( I do have an aunt that says she can teach me and I was fortunate enough to "inherit" my grandmother's knitting needles...so hopefully her skill will channel through them into my inexperienced hands <3 Miss you memere....xoxo

I taught myself to knit several years ago, and I really enjoy it. I decided to teach myself how to crochet because I found some really cute patterns for crocheting animals. I'm having some trouble though, with crocheting the adjustable ring. I've started working on a scarf, just a basic stitch, to give myself some practice and develop a familiarity with the hook and the basic stitches. Has anyone else here had trouble mastering the adjustable ring?

I taught myself to crochet last winter, aided exclusively by You Tube videos. Now I can read patterns without visual aids, although I admit that I keep it pretty simple, so far. If I ever want to try something new, there is always a video for it. But it might be nice to have people with whom to share ideas, ask questions, and find inspiration.

Yay for you! A knitting virgin? Well i can tell you that i tried once to knit something, and i wanted to stab myself in the forehead with the needle by the time i was done.
So i crochet, big easy blankets and scarfs.
THEN my friend came over and showed me how to knit! WOW it's much easier for me with someone showing me.
IMO there is something special about something someone made, like someone once said to me, *it's part of your life*
and when i make something for someone i put much energy and thought into it for them, so when they use it they get all of that good juju along with it.

Yes!!! That is why i wanted to try. My family is full of artist. My mom paints. My brother was a real artist, i think you've seen his work on fb. I have cousins in symphonies scattered all over the US. Music teachers. Art teachers....on and on.
And then...there is me. lol. I've tried so many crafts. I can make jewelry but it's just not that fun to me. I have enough beads in my closet to make a necklace long enough to stretch to where you live.
Anyway, point is, i DO want something that is from my hands that i can pass on to someone. A part of my life, my love and my work. Corny, maybe. But i want it and i want it bad.
I'm sitting here trying to go by this book and the first stitch to learn is the casting stitch. I look at the pic and i'm not sure if i'm doing it right or not. That is what is so frustrating. What if i'm practicing it wrong?
I'm not to the point of poking my eyes out with the needle yet, but i have sat on them twice now.

I'll admit it. I am an avid crochet freak. My grandmother taught me when I was 9 and I have never given it up. I am crocheting a blanket for Red as we speak. I use to love to work with the fine threads and make table runners and such but my eyes are to bad to see that well anymore.

I went through a knitting phase and I've gone upstate for the Sheep & Wool Festival at the Rhinebeck Fairgrounds too many times to count.
You see people knitting on the subway all the time, in winter. I feel calmer, watching them. It's like the fish tank in the doctor's office.
My grandmother crocheted and so did my sister who passed away. I don't know what happened to the bodark crochet needle my grandfather made. I think my mom has it.
Next reunion, there should be a crafts share!

I knit on teh Subway and teh Buses, all the time ...
I really liked a saying I saw on a t shirt somewhere.. Be happy I knit, it keeps me from killing you :) ..I may have paraphrased quite a bit..But its true, knitting calms me.... a good thing in the midst of rush hour transportation

Good to know!
I was on a piglet-kick for a while. I was thinking that the next one should have wings.

I'm here!!!!
I found some great video's on youtube. Still figuring it all out. I found 3 different ways to just make a slip knot. Also about six on how to cast on and how to make the first knit stitches.
I have found the ones that are easiest for me and have been practicing!!! I make about 10 cast ones then 10 knit stitches then i look at it and laugh.
Spacing is off, some are loose, some are tight. But. I'm practicing.
I am gonna just keep doing these two things and get them down good, before i move on. Of course today being Thanksgiving i've had no time to practice and now i work the next three days.
But, I'll get there!!!!!!!!

i do not knit, so i am of no help.
BUT in crocheting, you do not want to work *tight* or you end up with an uneven piece, because eventually you have to loosen it up.
That should SO go in the overheard thread. :|

I am getting the hang of crocheting. As I posted earlier, I taught myself to knit several years ago, and I enjoy it VERY much! When I first started teaching myself to crochet, I gotta confess, I wasn't all that thrilled...I liked knitting better. But now, as I am getting more familiar with working the yarn and hook, and learning the stitches...I find I'm enjoying myself! I have a bunch of patterns for little animals and I can't wait to give them a try!

when knitting it doesn't matter if you are a loose knitter or a tight knitter.
Having said that:
you do have to be consistent
realize that if you make a sock, hat, sweater, or mittens that gauge matters and being a loose knitter or a tight knitter will throw your gauge off and your piece will be to small or to big.
on toys, shawls, scarfs, gauge doesn't matter.
gauge
all pattern either list gauge or tell you it doesn't matter.
If it matters:
it will say that you should do a gauge swatch. If it says that 20 stitches x 20 rows should equal a 4x4 swatch and you do it and your 20 stitches x 20 rows makes a 3x3 swatch then what you are knitting will be to small. If your 20 stitches x 20 rows is 5x5 then what you are knitting will be way to big.
when you are happy and relaxed you will probably knit looser and when you are tense and upset you will probably knit tighter.
you will find dozens of you tubes for every stitch there is
there are dozens of cast on's and cast off's
use the one listed in the pattern if they tell you something specific
do your favorite if they don't tell you which one to use.
My favorite is the long tail cast on

This is my favorite passion.
Tunisian crochet.
It makes the most beautiful scarfs
The needle looks like a crochet needle with a stopper on the end..you actually cast on then *unload* to make a row.
The needle looks like this.

And the scarfs look like this.

Grow alpacas?? :)
I have found a super easy pattern (I keep wanting to say recipe...) for an adorable Christmas wreath. It's only 2 rounds....
Chain 14
Slip stitch in first chain to form ring.
Chain 1, 22 single crochets into ring, slip stitch finish circle
Chain 1, 1 single crochet in the first sc then 2 single crochets in each sc there after. Slip stitch to close. Make a loop for hanging. (I found silvery thread to string through it and make a bow.... :)

ME TOO. i am such a yarn snob! My ex-mom in law used to use the best yarns and i didn't appreciate their quality until i went back to the stuff i use. it doesn't compare. i like the way the more expensive yarns feel in my hand, and i like it chunky and bulky! She ordered from Mary Maxim. i may have to check them out!
There is this little yarn store in a neighboring town, i don't even consider her stock high and and it's between 7.00-15.00 per skein.
i remember when it was cheaper to crochet and knit things.

Yarn snob here. I use walmart, craft store, acrylic yarns for pet blankets and some toys and charity knitting (needs to be washable and dryable)
For most of my stuff I use indie dyers.
My #1 favorite~ Desert Vista Dyeworks
Blue Moon Fiber Arts
Highland Handmades
Cloudlover Yarn and Fiber
Cakewalk Yarns
Madeline Tosh Yarns
Beaverslide Dry Goods and Cascade Yarns for work horse yarns
Knit picks for better quality acrylics and a wide selection of good quality yarns. Their Brava worsted is wonderfully soft and very well priced.
Jimmybean, Webs, Lorna's laces, for wide selection of good yarns
A word on yarn, it can be a very individual thing. What some people rave about someone else may not like at all. I do not care for the variagated yarns, they pool in odd ways and there is no way to tell what the final project will look like. Except for when the colors blend together well (ex. creams, pale blues, light grays) (ex of not blending well, purple, green, red)
I do like self striping sock yarns. It it doesn't say that the yarn is self striping then it isn't.
Most yarns are listed on Ravelry and you can actually see things knit up with that yarn. It can be very helpful.
Plover bird for project bags that are resonably priced.
There are many bag makers out there and they can get expensive.
There are beautiful stitch markers out there, and other tools, that make the whole knitting process more enjoyable. Etsy is a good place to look.
Chiagoo Red Lace for metal needles (I only buy circular needles and never use straight needles anymore) Wood needles (DPN's and circulars) I use knit picks Harmony needles.
Some yarns are very slippery and do better on wood needles and some yarns have grip and do better on metal needles. The Chiagoo needles are very pointy which I like.
Several companies have come out with new needle lines. Knitters pride, Hiya Hiya, are two of them. I have not tried them.
I have found that needles are like yarn. A lot of people try knitting using cheap needles and yarn and find they don't like to knit. I think when you find the needles you love and yarn that makes you happy knitting can become a joy.
I love my pod casts. Here are a few that have stated their support of gays/gay marriage. (I listen to a lot more than this, these are just the ones I know are supportive)
The Knit Girllls (3 L's)
Girl Friends knitting
Dramatic knits
The Stockinette Zombies
Knittin' on the Fly
Fiberista Files
Lemknitcrochet podcast (young woman who made her support of gays/rights very clear~ her best friend was gay and he killed himself when they were in high school)

My friend is getting married in the fall. Her mother is making homemade soaps to give to the guests as they leave. My friend Amanda and I agree to knit washcloths to go with the soaps. It sounded like a good idea at the time - now I am wondering how I'm going to get all them done! Especially since I just rescued a kitten!

I am polyamorous when it comes to projects.... So right now I have the following knit projects going on.
The Mushroom Hat: I started with EZ's TriCornered hat from "a Knitter's Almanac" but I misread the pattern on the first one I did. So mine turned out weird. But I liked to the look, so I started a new one. After making more changes to it, of course. My sister and niece are arguing over who get's the 'shroom Hat so I might make two. I'm using this weird Louisa Harding yarn I found at Tuesday Morning.
A sock: Yarn Harlot's Basic Sock recipe, from "Knitting Rules". My first sock ever, knit on mystery sock yarn from the stash. No idea how it's gonna turn out. If it turns out well, I might make two.
A blue shawlette: again, made of mystery sock yarn from stash. No pattern, really. I'm just starting at the point, inserting lace panels as it gets big enough and then casting off when I run out yarn. The lace patterns are all selected from my stitch dictionary.
Random blanket sqares for Warm Up America. Doing them out of acrylic because that's what the lady I'm doing them for prefers. I think because it's easy care and these are going to Senior Care homes.
Dr Who Scarf. Self Explanatory! I'm using knit picks Palette, I think, but it's my last KnitPicks ever since I don't shop from them anymore. (Yes, I'm one of the people who got screwed in the Credit Debacle of Christmas 2012. And no, I never got my letter. At this point, if I find some KP in a yard sale or stash sale, I might get it if I need it, but will not be buying directly from them, or from one of the shops who carry them. I will still shop at the LYS who carry them, just not KP yarns.)
And there's a few other WIPs and UFOs out there, but that's what I'm doing right now. As soon as I remember to buy a smaller needle, I'll be redoing SUs navy hat. I need to go down a needle or two and cast on less stitches. It looks weird and is too big as is. Also, will cast off sooner on the new one because the first one looks like a nipple at the top. I'm using Lamb's Pride Worsted in Forest Shadows for this one. I'm trying not to cast on anything else new right now, but I'm getting inspired about a blanket...

Wow polyamorous doesn't seem to cover it all ... that's a lot of projects! I'm interested in the warm up America one - what is that? All the other ones sound really neat and I'd love to see pictures sometime! :knit:

HEE! Being Poly means it takes me forever to get stuff done! I'll post pics in my gallery here, maybe as I get them done. I should probably wake up my Ravelry again, and use their cataloging stuff. The thing is, my family is there, so I'm constrained what I post there. Maybe I need a second account. Rav frowns on that sort of thing, except in extreme cases, but I still might do it so I can let my freak flag fly more freely. (Holy Alliteration Batman!) But then I'd need to find more freaks to hang out with. (I stick with family friendly groups, over there.)
Warm Up America is a neat program where you can make blanket squares, and drop them off at designated collection points, and volunteers will seam them up and donate them in your community. A lot of Michael's and JoAnn's stores serve as drop off points. They always need volunteers to seam up, but I kind of suck at it, so I don't usually do that part! But I have helped package, deliver and make the cards that go with them. They have a website if you'd like to find a collection point in your area. (http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/how.html) Or you can set one up!
The website has directions and patterns to download, but honestly, as long as your squares are 7 by 9 inches, (technically a rectangle!) the patterns don't matter. I've been picking patterns that I'd like to learn out of my stitch dictionary and using those. It seems to work out okay! I just make sure I have a firm, garter stitch border to make seaming them up easier. Usually it's 3 rows of garter at the top and bottom, and then knit at least the first and last 3 stitches on each row. Depending on the stitch multiples needed for the pattern, the number at each end may change, so I just make sure there's at least 3 on each end.

Maryam - my friend Amanda was told me about Ravelry ... I have been meaning to try it. Maybe we can get a group of people from BFP as a group on there. :)
And thanks for the info on Warm up America - I'm going to look for it at my Michaels.
You rock! :knit:

There is already a butch/femme group on ravelry. It has almost no activity, but it's there.

Would you mind tossing a link out there? I've searched all the keywords I can think of, and I've got nada.

So now I'm laughing at myself... I went to go login to Rav for the first time since before Christmas and I can't remember my password, or apparently my email! I know it's been a while, but really? I only have two junk emails that I use to register for stuff and neither one of them is working!

1) Ravelry is yarn/knitting porn! :shocking: And I love it!
2) I'm on the 13th washcloth and I'm already tired of this project. I have 62 more wascloths to make. :(
3) I'm hoping my "sisters of the yarn" will tell me about their projects to help distract me
So everybody what are you working on??

Oh Ami I think I love you! In a very yarn positive way of course! ;)
First, let me just say that that turtle is too adorable. Really cute. Hope you post a picture when you get done. :)
Second, thanks for all the ideas to check out - I may never come up for air! ;)
Third, how many projects can you do at a time?? I want to see the other ones when they get done too! :)

Okay I gave up trying to remember myself on Ravelry, so I've registered and found the group, but it's kind of um, quiet.... If you'd like a friend, let me know and I'll add you. Or I'll send you my username and you can add me. You'll probably guess it's me if you're in the group, since it's pretty much the same name....
