View Full Version : What did you GIVE today?

I got this idea from my own post in the "I wish" thread. I can't say that I give of myself every day. I can say that most days I at least give laughter to people. That in itself means a lot to me to be able to make people smile and laugh.
I'd like to think that someone will post in this thread daily, just so we can see that we are a giving group of people.
So share with us your story or sentiments

I am making three coloring books for lil guys in the family. It has been a lot of work and I am happy to do it. It has been a three week long project filled with stories, cartoon characters and illustrations all done by hand. So not actually given as yet...... I give food to three stray cats everyday! And love to see them waiting for din din on my porch. I wish I could adopt them all but it is not possible.

I gave bird seed and suet to my native birds. I used the fat from my cherry ham for the suet. It still had alot of the cherries in it so the birds got a special treat.
I gave cookies to my neighbors. They all looked at me like I was a crazy person, in a good kinda way. Is this what we have become? It was tradition to always send goodies to neighbors, out on the farm.
I gave a massage to my old dog, who with this cold cold weather, is having problems walking even with coated aspirin.
I gave myself a beauty treatment at home. I thought since others gave such pretty things to me, the least I can do is treat myself as well as others are!

I gave Costco some money today. Organic gave Chevron some too.
We have given one another a hard time all day, but that's not unusual.
I gave him dinner and dessert. :)
We gave each other a good workout this morning.
I'm volunteering at the children's hospital ~ every day this week and next, as a lot of the college volunteers are out-of-town, so they asked me.
It's been so wonderful! I'll be there all day tomorrow and the children are so excited for all the visitors and presents!

I gave books away this last weekend...
While in Barnes and Noble I overheard a lady asking where she could find a certain book and she also wanted to know the cost. The book she was asking for was one I knew I was going to take to the Goodwill along with several other books. As she went to walk by me I called her over and told her that I would gladly give her the book she was looking for along with several others that I was sure her teen daughter would enjoy. Her eyes got all misty and it made me want to cry. She said *really, you would just give me the book?* of course I said. We exchanged numbers and the next day we took the box of books to her sons job and left them with a smile. In all they ended up with over 300.00 dollars in books because we were all in the right place at the right time... She called me later to thank me again and tell me that I had made her and her sons day... Not only did I recycle my books but I know they have gone to a good home...
...time and energy to make desserts for our dinner tomorrow... and they look pretty scrumptious!
:)

The Golden Ladder of Giving
1. To give reluctantly, the gift of the hand, but not of the heart.
2. To give cheerfully, but not in proportion to need.
3. To give cheerfully and proportionately, but not until solicited.
4. To give cheerfully, proportionately, and unsolicited, but to put the gift
into the poor person's hand, thus creating shame.
5. To give in such a way that the distressed may know their benefactor,
without being known to him or her.
6. To know the objects of our bounty, but remain unknown to them.
7. To give so that the benefactor may not know those whom he has relieved,
and they shall not know him.
8. To prevent poverty by teaching a trade, setting a person up in business,
or in some other way preventing the need of charity.

today I gave shelter to feral cats by opening my garage door a little so they could climb under and find warmth. The garage they lived in next door to me was torn down when they tore down the abandoned house. Now they have a new shelter...
today I took my old plastic milk cans, cut an opening in the side and filled them with straw and wrapped straw around them using baling twine and hung them from my grape arbor and trellises....the birds will have a new place to find warmth and shelter...
tonight is the night it is said the animals speak to god...and tell him of how we have been to them. I look at how sweet my three animals are, asleep in the warmth and safety of my home. Without a doubt they will speak well of me...
tonight I pray for all the animals without such a home...

More than that, Blade. Warmth is something many take for granted, until they don't have it. Especially in older folks, cold can get into the bones and just make you miserable. Kudos to you for being a good kid, being kind and giving of yourself.

So far today...just refreshed the food and water for "the outdoor kitty." There's a very shy white cat that socializes with our Mabel, but won't let us touch him/her. Doesn't look or act totally like a feral cat...we think that, with all the foreclosed homes in our area, someone left it behind. It was a little thin, but has started to fill out and look better once we started putting food out beside the garage for it. :playingcat:

I gave tips to my niece on how to pick out a puppy in a litter. She had no idea that the puppy she was going to pick would be a destructive high maintenance alpha type dog when grown. She wanted a lower level of care pup, one who would get along with, not dominate her other dog. Hopefully now she will pick better.

I have given a really loving, comfy, well provided for home to 5 kitties that would have been feral, sickly and remained stray with no hope of being loved or kept safe from the nasty dog next door that ate some of the other stray kitties. I'm really sad that I must make them stay in a kennel outside, and that I don't have the money to get their surgeries and shots.... but they are warm, dry, happy with their fancy jungle gyms and little houses, spoiled, well fed, very loved and have turned into sweet kitties instead of strays with no hope. I can't wait to find a loving person who wants to adopt one or more. I can't wait to give a sweet, VERY loving cuddle-bug of a kitty to someone who needs the love and companionship.... like an elderly person who doesn't have anyone else.

I gave a couple hours attention to my Aunt, who is disabled, on 24/7 oxygen and struggling. We don't often get to connect.
My heart & soul...in all that I do give!

I gave my time and attention to my neighbors, my respect, a listening ear as they told me about what they've been through since they lost their house to fire...and I gave an offer to make their meals as they work to relocate their little cabin. ..in return, they surprised me with an offer to give me a huge, almost new 12' x 28' deck.

I gave a ride to a lady I thought was homeless....
I see her now and then around town...always walking with a stick and wearing a red knit hat...
Well she was thumbing today and I didn't see her right away so I passed by but I turned around and picked her up. Turns out she lives in the "hillbilly" house on the way to Chimney Rock...its a house that has no electricity or running water. She was an interesting lady....

I put together a big lunch, sweet tea and dessert, put it all in a basket, delivered it and gave my hospitality and respect to my neighbors as they worked on their cabin.
They offered several times to pay me for it, but I refused and told them "this is what neighbors do for neighbors, they look out for each other....part of my nature is enjoying taking care of my friends and neighbors."

Today I worked on a plywood panel that I scavenged. It is really strong wood. I pulled staples, being oh so careful not to bruise the wood, for about 2.5 hours. My right palm is swollen Sanded it to perfection. I knew it was going to look pristeen when I worked on it, cleaned it up. Honestly, it is beautiful! I discovered some new wood putty called Plastic Wood by DAP at Home Depot a couple of weeks ago. I have tried every brand there it but this one RAWKS! After it dried and I sanded it where I had puttied, you could not see any dimples (holes where I removed nails) ... This piece is going to be a table top for a friend's table I am making for her. She said she wanted it to be 20" by 30". Her Mom had a stroke and she has been gone North for awhile taking care of her Mother. I will put a half shelf above the tabletop and hide a pretty light under the bottom of the half shelf. I hope to complete this table and have it sitting on her back patio when she returns home. She doesnot know she will have it so soon. And I fed her husband last night. I cooked over 5 pounds of chicken tenders last night on the grill. Took an xtra large plate of these to him.

Yesterday..I gave a bunch of eggs from my little flock to a couple of very dear friends. The Lady of the house recently had major surgery and is confined to her at-home-hospital bed. If she ever needs my help, I would drop everything to be there for her. I adore her and her husband, and enjoyed giving my time to sit with her and listen to her story. I hope soon to make some homemade goodies for her.

It was purely coincidental but....
Today is the Asheville Humane Society's Dine to be Kind day...and 10% of every meal served at 50+ restaurants in Asheville goes to AHS.
Nine Mile is one of those restaurants...so my lunch is helping the animals. It all adds up.. :)

I delivered a big homecooked meal of slow cooked, pulled BBQ, slaw, and fresh dinner rolls to my beloved friends mentioned above...and I brought my retired nursing home therapy dog to give some much needed amusement to a dear lady that's bed-ridden. She got so tickled when my pup was showing off all his funny tricks, and both her and her husband fell in LOVE with him. It was so good to hear them laugh!! They begged me to bring him back.

On Saturday, I delivered a large crock of homemade chicken n dumplins, deviled eggs and several tomato plants to my friend who's recovering from surgery and her husband. I can't take credit for making the dumplins and eggs, but I sure enjoyed delivering them to a family that's currently in need of a bit of neighborly love.

I gave too much energy to clients today. Drained and frazzled me. Lesson in balance.
I gave patience to a situation that could have escalated and gone bad fast had I not.

I did assessments for some seriously impaired clients today.
I don't usually toot my own horn but a co-worker told me after I saw one that could barely navigate due to intoxication, "I really admire you for the way you deal with the clients. I don't know that I could be so patient".
It made me feel good because I am really patient, no matter how they behave.

I gave a huge bag of well-cared-for professional business clothes to the Boutique that helps support the Women's shelter here. They, in turn, give vouchers to women that are in need of interview outfits or business suits.
I am bumping this thread.

I like to smile and say howdy or good day to people when I am out and about. A lot of people (like me) live alone so a smile and greeting feels nice.

As I was leaving the diner last night, I stopped one of the waitresses and handed her 4 "gold" $1 coins. I told her to put them in her grand daughters stocking. I had tipped her with these coins a while back and she had told me how much the little girl loves them. She thinks they are real gold and calls them "treasures" lol

A co-worker is getting married in about two weeks and we were talking about how they are doing their wedding which is going to be DIY. So, I asked if she was registered anywhere- and she said no, because they are going to build a tiny house and have already downsized. So, they are just asking family members/friends for a monetary or something to help in building the tiny house gift.
I asked if there as anything she needed for the DIY wedding and she told me a story about how a friend of her's was going to give her the table center pieces that she used at her recent wedding. Well, as it turns out the friend went back on her word and sold them.
So, I said- I will get your center pieces for you. What would you like? She was all you do not have to do that, etc. etc. I said, I realize I do not have to but I WANT to. She said she would like glassware (all mismatched) that she can put flowers, tea lights, or little fairy lights in.
I am going to hit up the re-use center here or a couple of good thrift stores and buy her 12 mismatched center pieces.
Giving is one of the best feelings ever.
