View Full Version : Portland Gatherings!
Please use this space to announce gatherings and general mayhem in The PDX and surrounding areas. Yes, Vancouver-ites are welcome too!
...and Seattle-ites who <3 The PDX, too! :D
Yes, Cara -- Even the Seattle-ites are welcome as long as they remember not to diss our Coffee. Remember, we have The VooDoo donuts, and you don't.
shh...don't tell...I like The Portland coffee better!
Sassy and I are down here in Southern Oregon, but if you're ever gonna be down this way, drop us a line, we'd love to meet folks.
Thanks, MTN!
Cara, it was fun to see you this past weekend. Next time, our house won't be so torn up!

I am bummed I will miss the welcome wagon next week... but let's do something post holiday? :D
I'm gonna miss out, too, SassyLeo. A get-together after the holly-daze sounds like a GREAT idea! :D

If my kitchen ever gets done, I will be glad to have it here. If it ever does.

Is that..After Thanksgiving..and.after Christmas, before New Years, or after New Years.
Curious minds are arriving in Portland driving to Eugene and back to Portland after and before said holidays, and would love to Meet N Greet Planeteers en route.

Hey there! How come we are the *forgotten* ones? Not many head down our way... Looking forward to Thanksgiving... Miss you both a bunch! Those of you up north need to take a look at Sassy's photographs of Howard Prairie... Those sunrise photo's are the real deal... Maybe we should plan a summer type gathering up on the mountain...

Suryana! We have been meeting for dinner about once a month, often there are 20ish of us. I will be sure to post the next one, which may be a potluckish thing at my house here.

Anyone interested in meeting up at the 12/18 Hot Flash Dance at Barracuda?
Attention! There is a Brunch at Starky's on Stark street this Sunday at 10:00.
Bijoux has organized it, but I don't think she's on much so you can PM her here or there and also, if you want, PM me and I will get her your name because we already have 21 people! (WHOA!) and we need to make reservations. Also, she is asking that folks bring cash because I guess Starky's doesn't like to do seperate checks.
We've been having a lot of fun at these, so I hope folks in the Portland area can make it.

Yay! Looking forward to meeting you both! I will let Bijoux know!
Sunday was a lot of fun over at The Starky's! It was great to meet Suryana, Met and The Lady in person!
We will be hosting a January gathering at our home, date to be decided, but probably mid-month so we can all recuperate from the Holidays. I will post the exact date/time soon. We'll try for a Saturday evening so it's easier for our Northern and Southern folks to attend.

Welcome to Portland, Metro! I can't wait to finally meet you in person and hang out.

Hey, everyone! This means our compatriots to the North and South too!
I will be hosting a get together Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 6:00. This will be a potluck, but I will make a large chicken/pasta based main dish, so feel free to bring other stuff. For non-cooks, yes, it's okay to bring something to drink!
We will have a room set up for Poker and several areas to just gather and mingle. Usually, we end up sitting at separate tables, so hopefully this will be a more intimate gathering where people can visit more.
If you're interested in attending, please PM me, and I will give you my address after you prove to me you're not an axe murderer ;)
We have a group on Facebook too, so let me know if you want to be on that as well. The group is really friendly and welcoming -- We're comprised of BF, BFP and non-online but local folks. Come in your jammies if you want!

Not much fun to watch (Florida 2007, anyone...?), but hella fun to play...

That was fun! We wouldn't mind hosting a BBQ in our back yard. There's lots of room for yard games, etc. and we'd be close to clean bathrooms (always an added plus). No chasing the chickens though! We'll talk soon.

I know! The thing is, I married a geek. A geek who is doing a very intense program and actually *likes* doing her homework. And I'd feel bad if I left her home by herself doing homework while I went to a party. So the clear solution is to bring the party here.

Hey Ya'll,
I am organizing another Butch Femme gathering for the summer, in Portland.
SUNDAY July 25th (either 10:30am for brunch or 11:30 for a picnic) Whatever the majority wants most! Location to be announced. YOU MUST RSVP TO COME and let me know which you prefer.
I am inviting folks from BFplanet, Butch Femme.com, Butch Femme locals on Craigs List and butch femme friends & allies. Everyone is welcome. I am the kind of person that doesn't believe in drama, and cliques and would like an event to be for all Butch Femme identified peoples...try your best to help create a gathering where we all can come together!

What type of queer functions do they have? Many B/f gatherings? I am definitely femme and get tired of being mistaken for a straight woman who has wandered into the wrong place! I am the kind of person that doesn't believe in drama, and cliques and would like an event to be for all Butch Femme identified peoples...try your best to help create a gathering where we all can come together!
See you there,
sarah

Join a diverse group of Femmes at the Q Center on Sunday December 19th from 2 - 4pm! (4115 N Mississippi Ave)
The activity:
Meet queer femmes in the Portland Metro Area. Talk, eat, brainstorm what kinds of activism, parties, care-networks, and fundraising events we'd like to create. Relax in the "comfort where we overlap" and find strength in differences. Please bring food you can eat and a bit more to share.
The call for participation:
After attending the Femme Conference 2010, I have a wicked desire for the formation of a femme-identified collective/affinity group/friendship circle. Several femmes at the conference were from Portland. So, I did a bit of research on what has come before. Through the Femme Affinity Group (FAG) zines at Multnomah County, and a search of PDXFemme on MySpace, as well as a bitchin' portland-based Femme Coloring Book, I think there have been at least two femme groups that have come and gone in the area. So, here is the call: I want a femme community gathering, such as an affinity group, book group, glitter balls, visits and caregiving for elder lesbians/femmes (many of whom do not have children -- they were busy changing everything concerning sex, sexuality, and gender), queerfemme mutual aid society, something! I want it to be intergenerational, anti-racist, trans-friendly and inclusive of femme-identified individuals of all sex/gender identities and sexual orientations - and those who care about us-- just like the femme conference! And I know I am not alone, but I am not sure how much of an interest is there. I want to get together and see what local femmes, in all our diverse glory, want to do. I feel strongly that this is needed in Portland. FYI I'm not the most popular or well-connected femme on the left coast...but this is essential! I don't care what arguments, divides, drama, needs to be mediated in our small small queer world, it is totally worth it.

I'm sort of tiptoeing back into Portland's Lesbian community after having been wrapped up in my career and other stuff for many years. Now, in my Cronehood and just working part time, I've sat up and taken a look around to see what's going on. I've seen the info about the Femmes Unite meeting at the Q Center and have thought about going. At this point, though, it seems that I won't be able attend the March meeting, so I will aim for April.
One thing is certain for me, I'm just as sassy a feminist Femme as I've always been, perhaps even more so in a deeper way than when I was younger. I've observed that for me, and other "older" Femmes I've spoken with, the connection with our deep feminine sexuality is generally more intact and more intense than it is amongst "older" hetero women. I fully attribute that to the fact that we are Lesbians and have been immersed in a culture of positive woman-centric sexuality for a long time. I love hangin' out with my Femme sisters and it has been much too long since I've done so.
Queer Femme, how is it going with the meeting? What you have proposed just sounds very cool and I will get myself to the meeting as soon as I can:-)

Damselfly, in Oregon we have the Oregon Health Plan (http://www.oregon.gov/DHS/healthplan/app_benefits/main.shtml) Click on the link to check out the eligibility requirements.
The Department of Human Services (DHS) (http://www.oregon.gov/DHS/index.shtml) will have State level info that you need.
For info about Multnomah Co. which is the county Portland is in you can check out the Multnomah Co. Health & Human Services (http://web.multco.us/health-human-services) web page for info. Mult. Co. HHS covers most of what you have asked about.
I can tell you that state services are going to be cut due to the very bad situation with the State budget. Oregon was one of the hardest hit states by the recession. I don't know which services, I don't think anyone does, yet.
Multnomah Co. HHS budget will be affected to some degree, but I'm not sure how much.
Weather wise, winters are typically quite rainy and grey. Average daytime temps are in the 40s, but we generally have several days in the 30s with nights in the teens or 20s. Sometimes, we get snow and or freezing rain. The rain lasts usually through July 4th, having started back in November. July, August, and September can be quite hot. Sometimes up into the 90s or 100s for a few days with a good deal of humidity. Moss and molds grow really well here. Pollens are plenty so the area can be tough on those with allergies and/or asthma. When we do have sunny days, it is gorgeous! 500 shades of green, flowers blooming every where. Big trees, mountains close by, rivers, and the ocean not too far away. Caffeine and bright light therapy boxes are popular here for a reason;-) We have the Q Center (http://www.pdxqcenter.org/), a decent Queer newspaper (http://blogout.justout.com/), and in general a very mellow and active Queer (http://qpdx.com/) community.
Portland prides itself on being YouTube - Is Portland Oregon Weird?. You can go to HULU (http://www.hulu.com/portlandia) to watch the series
Portlandia, which does spoof Portland's weirdness.
Hope all this is helpful :goodluck:

Hello Portland people,
As some of you may know already, two young gay men were beaten for
holding hands and strolling along.
http://www.kgw.com/news/local/Two-men-beaten-on-Eastbank-Esplanade-may-be-bias-crime-122528534.html
There is a hand's across the river gathering to honor them Sunday at 7pm on the Hawthorne bridge.
I think Rose Festival people will see us and I would bet many of them will come to stand with us. Damn, I love this city.
7pm tonight.
Please come and show your support for these two.
Both men and the mayor were there. One of the men spoke and it was
pretty emotional to hear him tell the story.
What an amazing feeling to be around 2,000 plus queers and other people.
I went by myself and just sucked it all in.I may have teared up several times.
I walked slowly with the cramped crowd and took in all the faces that we passed by.
I dont do singing or holding hands so I drove slow back and forth across the bridge
honking .The crowd went wild waving and screaming.I'm a quiet person so this felt
odd at first but so fuckin good I wish I had gone for one more round.
This message is for anyone with children. I'm just going to copy and paste my friends message. She's looking for a day care place for her son for next week because the one she normally takes him to his shutting down this week due to some toxins or some such or the other. Anyway if you know of a childcare place that is available this week please PM me. She's going to get kicked out of school if she doesn't show up for days at a time. Thanks!

Happy New Year Portland people,
I know this is not "exactly" the right place for this but it seemed silly to start a thread for it, so forgive me that. I need some help. My daughter is trying to settle into the Portland / Vancouver area. She is in her 20's and looking for a place to live. She is working and going to school, so she is busy, busy and on a students budget. She is open to a share, or small Apartment. A house with a small studio attached would be my hope. She does have a smallish dog, a Springer Spaniel (Rocco).
If one was to describe my daughter in one word it would be "cute". All around, sweet person, fun, kind, sensitive, with good boundaries. She is straight but a femme Princess, who is an avid Gay rights supporter. If you have any leads would you please PM me?

Just thought I'd come by and say "Hi" tonight.
I know it's a few weeks away, but wanted to
say that I'm planning on hearing the Portland Cello Project's
performance at the Doug Fir Lounge on April 13th.
I'm looking forward to a night of great food and music!

Was curious if there are any gatherings still happening in Portland or the surrounding areas?
It can be hard to get us all together. There are lots of folks here that aren't on the site, too. I left you a note, but when the weather gets better, I will schedule something for the patio!

Sounds good... I look forward to meeting everyone...I miss having a bunch of friends to just hang out with.. Missouri was NOT known for its queer welcoming party!
