For lovers of Swing Era, 40's music...post your faves here. This is your grandparents music...but still such a joy to listen to. Nothing beats the old standards - now, this IS music!! I'll start with Artie Shaw's rendition of Glenn Miller's 'Moonglow'.
I know, it's prob 'cornball' stuff to most of you, but there's something so special about this music. I love it, and if it's new for you, I hope you learn to love it too.

Mitmo - thank you, thank you, thank you!! for introducing me to these wonderful artists - never heard of them, but if it hadn't been for you, I would never know (from one who thinks she knows it all! lol)
I loved the first offering - thank you so much!
The Sheik of Araby I've heard before and love. You know that song was inspired by all the hoopla made by Rudolf Valentino's starring in 'The Sheik' - a silent film of the 20's - he had women all over the world swooning! So sad he died so young.
The last, 'Georgia on My Mind' - I had no idea that song went so far back. I first heard it by Ray Charles - thought he had originated it. Boy, do I have alot to learn!!!
Again, thank you so much for your offerings, Mitmo. I am an enlightened girl!! :)

The Glen Miller Band will be at the Horseshoe casino before long,I am calling to see when the dates are and when the tickets go on sale...saw this on a eletronic bill bord going over the bridge yesterday,to much trafic to get a better look.Oh,I have tons of cassets of big band misic,Jimmy Dorsey,Glen Miller,Benny Goodmay ect...nothing comes close to the smooth swinging hype of big band music.

Uh oh! I cannot believe someone started a thread solely dedicated to BB and swing music! I could break out in song ... "heaven, I'm in heaven ..."
I may contribute a bit of history now and then ... I am a dancer, and swing (not east coast ... yawn ... but Lindy Hop) ... is my favorite ... and I learned from a master, an original, a man who is a piece of history, Frankie Manning. The music came about FOR the dancers. And I have some contributions to make here. From my tastes and perspectives.
Mitmo, ya captured it (for me). You go, hon!!! :)

One place to get da music ...
http://www.downhomemusic.com/
Down Home Music is in El Cerrito, CA. It's a great place where, unlike most, you can actually ask someone about a specific genre' of music and, THEY KNOW! Each employee has a particular area, or genre, that they know really well. They are great on the phone, you can order on phone or on line. They have an EXTENSIVE vinyl record collection in the back.
They do not solely sell BB/swing. They sell C&W, World Music, etc. Just not pop, rap, or whatever is currently played on the radio. Great resource ... that is under threat of closure due to hard economic times. If you think that you'd like to purchase music, please consider Down Home Music.

I have more good old fashioned jazz on my ipod than any other type of music. Ella is my favorite singer of all time. Lady Day, Duke, Count Basie, Cole Porter, Pops, give me those any day over the stuff that's on the radio today. I like contemporary jazz artists too, such as Jane Monheit, John Pizzarelli, Michael Buble, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Harry Connick Jr. This music is pure magic!

Cry Me a River is a great song. It has been done in several versions, most notably, Ella Fitzgerald, Julie London and Joe Cocker. I love them all but think Julie London's is probably the best.
I love big band and am fond of Glen Miller, Benny Goodman and the Andrews Sisters in particular. I recall being in high school and buying The Boogie Woogie Bugle boy by Bette Midler and while playing it one night my dad stuck his head in the door because all he had ever heard from my room was stuff like Alice Cooper and Led Zeppelin. He asked what it was because he thought it was the Andrews sisters and that was HIS music. We bonded there for just a sec I think.

I’ve somehow missed this thread! I’m a passionate music lover and grew up with Musicians in the family – I was mostly surrounded by Classical, Opera, Jazz and traditional Maori waiata (songs/music). I still continue to listen to these fantastic (I feel) music and have uploaded a lot to my laptop and MP3 and phone to listen to. My phone’s ring tone is Tequila by the Champs – I’ve loved that song since I was little dancing happily away, lol!
Among my vast music collection I have Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, Matt Munro, Jim Reeves, Doris Day, Marie Ellington, Peggy Lee and Rosemary Clooney.
I often play these greats and Classical at work and when I’m volunteering at the Disabled Art Studio – the music has a very soothing effect on everyone and I’ve seen a few people who’ve said they hated this kind of music dancing along and quietly singing, lol!
I have some modern Jazz, but, rarely listen to it.
