Quite possibly the most innovative & brilliant young composer in America; and an incredibly talented violinist.

His music mixes up hip-hop, classical, electronic, spoken word, improvisation...
If you ever have the opportunity to see him, don't miss it.

This mornings rehearsal was wonderful! My favorite stringed instrument is the cello... what a lovely hopeful sound.

*Goodness sakes!*

Many of you might like and enjoy music by The Corrs and there's a backstory (or rather, more like a story-within-a-story) about that, but I'll save it for another place in time...

The no. 13 is magical (and my 'lucky' number :cheesy:)
and I am always amazed when I see connections as I map
progress, daily, moment by moment at times, in my life.

That's all I have for the moment right now because I'm private like that;
however it's a consistent lesson (measurement, if you will) in my world that I remain open - let my arms be wide open - so I can fly and leave traces of my essence as I soar across the skies of life...

Here's to my love of String Theory, Stars, the No. 13 & Bonds that Tie:

What beautiful selections people are leaving for this forum thread!

SoOOoOoOoo,
I'm leaving this video tonight because it is a part of my teaching matrix in COM LAW - Creative License: What an interesting communications course this class has been to me during my final semester in graduate school. This song (and historical issues attendant to it) is one of many examples I have built into my presentation for Monday night's class - the last time our class meets.

I'll catch up with you all soon
and look forward to listening to more
great examples of Music ft. Strings!

Here's a few for today, a "this and that" mixture of songs by Jewel & Jeff Beck & Chris Isaak, that I think are beautiful to listen to (music ft. strings!):

1982 Drinkin' TNT 'n' Smokin' Dynamite (live) -- Blind Pig (rec. 1974 Montreax Jazz Fest.)
Carlos Augusto Alves Santana (born July 20, 1947), known simply as Carlos Santana or Santana, is a Grammy Award-winning Mexican-born American Latin rock musician and guitarist.
He became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band, the Santana Blues Band, going mostly under the title "Santana," which created a highly successful blend of salsa, rock, blues, and jazz fusion. Their sound featured his often high-pitched and distorted guitar lines set against Latin American instrumentation such as timbales and congas. Santana continued to work in these forms over the following decades, and experienced a sudden resurgence of popularity and critical acclaim in the late 1990s.
Over his career he has sold an estimated 80 million albums worldwide.

George "Buddy" Guy (born July 30, 1936) is an American blues and rock guitarist and singer. Known as an inspiration to Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and other 1960s blues and rock legends, Guy is considered an important exponent of Chicago blues. He is the father of female rapper Shawnna.
Guy is known for his showmanship; for example, he plays his guitar with drumsticks, or strolls into the audience while jamming and trailing a long guitar cord.
Born in Lettsworth, Louisiana, Guy grew up in Louisiana where he learned to play guitar at a womens trucker convention[citation needed]. In the early '50s he began performing with bands in Baton Rouge. Soon after moving to Chicago in 1957, Guy fell under the influence of Muddy Waters. In 1958, a competition with West Side guitarists Magic Sam and Otis Rush gave Guy a record contract. Soon afterwards he recorded for the Cobra label. He recorded sessions with Junior Wells for Delmark Records under the pseudonym Friendly Chap in 1965 and 1966.

Last time I heard this song was last summer when a crew of construction workers began to blast this song at 0-dark-thirty...

But today...

The sun was just cresting over a snow-capped Mt. Hood (red as a fire ball) and I was surfing for music to listen to and landed on KGON playing:

Bad Company's ~~> Feel like makin love

*oOoOoOoh yeah*

doing 70,
weaving in and out of early morning traffic
rocking out to this song, the sun staring me staight in the eyes, no sunglasses, but I loved it!
And, since I couldn't leave last night to get
something important to address a household need,
I called my good friend (Brynn, who just got off work late)
and she stopped by with a fly swatter (imagine that, LOL)
and a framed picture she made for me that had the word
"Starfucker" in it (the band here from POrtland)!!!

I feel lucky today! :cheesy:

SooOoOoOoo, I guess I will put all my early morning energy into
getting the last 1/3 of my study done and rock out
to Bad Company again; then take a long nap for another
round of "work" tonight...

*Love the bad a$$ bass and strings section in this song!*

The words of this lullaby go as follows (for those who might be curious):

"Under baby's cradle in the night

The goat will go to the market

He'll bring you raisins and almonds
Sleep, my little one, sleep."

This evening I plan on opening a nice Pinoit Noir and listening to "The Planets" at an immodest volume and following along with the score. There may even be brie, fruit and crackers involved, not to mention dark chocolate.

PS/ I really like the lyrics of Finest Hour:
I often wonder what it might feel like
to 'waste' my love - just give it away,
no questions asked. I don't know that
it's something I feel comfortable with but
what entices me to try it is the knowledge
that maybe doing so might be the sweetest

Wagner's prelude from Tristan & Isolde in the film Melancholia (2011).

ps/ if you can, see the film Melancholia or Tree of Life:
both are excellent films, competing for top honors this year.

I've kind of fallen behind with practicing for my guitar lessons,
but I really like Harry Chapin and his storytelling through song;
the vital Story within a Story that his songs usually dealt with.

*Lyrics*

"The little boy went first day of school
He got some crayons and started to draw
He put colors all over the paper
For colors was what he saw
And the teacher said.. What you doin' young man
I'm paintin' flowers he said
She said... It's not the time for art young man
And anyway flowers are green and red
There's a time for everything young man
And a way it should be done
You've got to show concern for everyone else
For you're not the only one

And she said...
Flowers are red young man
Green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than they way they always have been seen

But the little boy said...
There are so many colors in the rainbow
So many colors in the morning sun
So many colors in the flower and I see every one

Well the teacher said.. You're sassy
There's ways that things should be
And you'll paint flowers the way they are
So repeat after me.....

And she said...
Flowers are red young man
Green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than they way they always have been seen

But the little boy said...
There are so many colors in the rainbow
So many colors in the morning sun
So many colors in the flower and I see every one

The teacher put him in a corner
She said.. It's for your own good..
And you won't come out 'til you get it right
And are responding like you should
Well finally he got lonely
Frightened thoughts filled his head
And he went up to the teacher
And this is what he said.. and he said

Flowers are red, green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than the way they always have been seen

Time went by like it always does
And they moved to another town
And the little boy went to another school
And this is what he found
The teacher there was smilin'
She said...Painting should be fun
And there are so many colors in a flower
So let's use every one

But that little boy painted flowers
In neat rows of green and red
And when the teacher asked him why
This is what he said.. and he said

Flowers are red, green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than the way they always have been seen."

was drug to what I thought was going to just be a concert by "Accapella" by a dear dear... dear friend and got a surprise. The Atlanta Symphony was there as well. Still wasn't my cup of tea.. but the symphony did a rendition of Stand by Me that was haunting and incredibly beautiful. I can't find their version, but I did find something...

There's some beautiful stringed melodies to listen to here!
Thank you UofMan, greco and tawse! :)

tawse??? When I listened to the number you found by Ben E King (with the London Symphony) and read your post about hearing the rendition the Atlanta Symphony performed recently (your outting with your friend), the first thing that came to my mind was I thought about your descripton of the number being 'eery' - I might know what you're talking about because I heard a rendition of an eery version of the Ben E King song as performed by a symphony back home in Idaho, years ago. I hadn't thought about that concert in years - but your post conjured the memory, so thanks!!!

Another member in our community, posted the music video I am leaving here tonight, in the main forum thread for music "What are you listening to?" last summer(2010) - or was it in the fall??? The group is called: The Portland Cello Project. They perform "Denmark" (ft. Gideon Freudmann). The person who posted it had no idea how deeply that video touched my heart because ... well, because of a dear friend of mine in Berlin, Germany loved Danish culture, spent significant time in Denmark (grew up there, if I remember correctly or their familial origins begin in Denmark, something like that). Long story short :cheesy: : We had this ongoing conversation about particular things and that particular part of our conversation led to me posting a video clip from Sesame Street's 'absent minded professor' who built the 'six dollar man' (a spoof on the Six Million Dollar Man, a tv show back in the day) - who immediately blew up into a million peices (all collected from the trash can, garbage can) after the scientist was trying to proove to kids how his experiment was going to 'work.' HAHAHAHAHA!!!! The clip featuring his concocted 'six dollar man' resembles the wooden puppet in The Portland Cello Project video below and furthermore, there's a little red lobster (on a piece of paper, and artistic representation of a lobster) sitting on the tank of the toilet. It's somewhere near the beginning of the video.

Anyway... how seredipitous for them to have posted that video, and how the contents of that video are nearly perfect or fit perfectly (I should say) the extended conversation I had with my friend in Berlin, years ago (2006?) :)

*Enjoy*

ps/ the caveat to this story is that the story-within-the-story between me and my TG butch friend in Berlin was a spin-off to my argument about Bob Dollar - the protagonist in the Annie Proulx story, That Old Ace in the Hole.
