View Full Version : The Royal Wedding
In less than 24 hours, London will be bustling with activity surrounding the wedding of William and Kate. Sooooooo, I'm wondering how many people plan to turn into the festivities at some point during Friday?
I am cuz I'm weird like that. Plus, I bet that Philip will fall asleep during the ceremony.

Yes I will be watching the wedding, and yes I am getting up early to see it. I am tired of hearing the negative stuff that is going on in the world today like Haiti, Japan, the oil spill, The Donald, bad weather, and on and on. I need some happy love story being played out in the media. Nothing beats a royal wedding to make me happy.
My girl is all into it, and heck nothing wrong with princes and princesses

I remember as a kid seeing his mother and father getting married. I didn't understand what was going on because I was so young. In my mind, I thought Princess Dianna was taking Prince Charles hostage! LOL
I don't know whether to watch it just to say I saw history in the making or to let it go because I really don't give two hoots about it. It's just a shame his momma can't be there.

I'm not really into it at all and don't really get all the fuss but I know some folks enjoy it and that's cool. I must say, however, that I read something about it that did interest me. It was about the celebrity guest list blah blah blah all the folks that we would expect to see there, then it said that Rowan Atkinson was on the guest list as a close personal friend of the Prince. That absolutely tickled me. I just wouldn't have expected Mr. Bean and the Prince to be buddies. That made me smile. Now I just might watch too lol :)

My tv is only useful with the dvd player: no cable, satellite or even antenna. BUT, if i could, i would get up and watch it. i saw the last one, and it had me pretty transfixed.
i will definitely watch any clips that show up online and look at pictures of the dress, shoes, etc.

Pop,
I heard your reputation has reached all the way across the pond. As such, they have changed your seat to one between Mr. Bean and the cast of Are you being served.
And, I hear your pickle needs to be properly packaged for the event i.e. hidden in one of those new Orville microwave pop up bowls.

I'll be watching it, but just the wedding none of the pre-wedding stuff that starts at like 2am lol. At first I wasn't going to, but then it's not often that there's a royal wedding and...well...prefer Will to ol' Charlie boy. Seems like he'd make a half decent king if we're to have one anyway.
I was wondering whether this was a big thing worldwide or just a commonwealth thing...question answered, I guess.
Oh and as for festivities...nah. Some pubs are serving English breakfasts for it and I like English breakfasts...but I'm too lazy to drag my ass over to Fox n' Fiddle for that lol

I live / work in London but travelled back to my home city of Belfast last weekend and will be in Belfast until this Sunday (when the Royal Wedding is well and truly over) so that I could escape the build-up and the fake excitement surrounding it.
I'm strongly pro-British but the Royal Family has no positive meaning for me.
Leaving the above rant aside, William seems like as level-headed a guy as he could be, given his upbringing, and Kate appears an attractive, engaging young lady so I wish them both well in their union together.

I will watch it and I wish them the best. I am touched by William's ways of including his mother in his marriage.
I don't have any feelings one way or another about the royal family but have followed it through the years. Maybe that is because I was put in front of an old B & W TV at the age of 4 to watch the Coronation of his Grandmother. And yes, Diana dazzled me.
I always hope for happiness when people commit to each other in whatever manner they hold as important. With this couple, I see the possibility of an actual union of love based upon their own choosing of one another. Not usually the stuff of royal unions.
Yup, will watch the wedding and be happy for two people in love.

Most of my mates have no interest whatsoever in the wedding. I'm not a Royalist but neither am I a Republican (President Thatcher! :| 'nuff said) so it doesn't hold any interest for me apart from there being a shared national experience.
Ms.Pie-face and Ms.OrangeCounty will be having a Royal Wedding soiree with mini cucumber sandwiches and Pimms....I shall take champagne and bypass the dreadful Pimms but I shan't watch the wedding on tv.

If I were still living in London I would likely be heading to Amsterdam to escape the melee...
BUT since I'm not, I am eagerly anticipating 'The Dress' AND the best exhibit of millinery art in the world. (I am *all about* the hats).
I've also scored major Mother-Points by inviting her over for mimosas and breakfast at crazy-'o'-clock. She and I watched two Royal Weddings together when I was a child.

We are on vacation so there is no way we will be waking up for this...
I have no interest and luckily my bride doesn't either... (my Mom is waking up though with her book club and having tea and crumpets). I just think of all the resources being spent on this wedding and I look around this planet and see all the suffering going on at this very moment.... and I have to wonder... really really wonder. I know it's a fairy tale (at least that's what my Mom says... with a little giggle... and that's a little cute) so I wish the what seems to be a very happy couple well....

That's a provocative post and nothing to do with the Royal Wedding.
As someone with three bullets still in me due to a (failed) Sinn Fein / IRA murder attempt in 1993, I am rather sensitive on the topic. Add to that my Protestant friends murdered by the IRA through the 1970s and 1980s and you'll hopefully understand some of it?
and what is it? well, it's never sleeping at night, it's reading too much, and yet too little, into every situation. It's about understanding too much and too little at the same time.
An explicit request for the Brits (ie me) to get out of Northern Ireland, a place you've likely never been to? No chance. You are a coward.

I'm not planning on watching....but I did watch the Charles & Diana wedding as a freshman in college with a group of friends. Diana was our age, and we were pretty taken with the whole thing.
The irony was watching what happened to her in the aftermath....and feeling like she was so ill prepared for what she was getting into.
Her death happened when I was home on maternity leave with my son....so I watched a lot of that media coverage too. (How could I not...it was on every channel).
I'm with you AtLast....my hope is that these two have chosen each other, been together and even lived together for a significant amount of time....and that Kate is prepared for what she's walking into far more than Diana was.
I wish them both well. :rrose:

I think seeing the dress will be fun, and also the hats. I look dreadful in them, but have a fascination for the wee bits of fluff perched upon their heads.
I am just a hat person- love them. Wish the US fashionistas would promote them more. Don't care if they are for males or females.... they rawk! I miss hat boxes and
Hats are like hair styles/cuts- there are those that look great on all of us... bet there is more than one that would look great on you and everyone else!
The Brits know hats and I love them for this. Philip Treacy's hats are awesome milliner creations. Can't wait to see his hats Friday!!
Also.... I have a deep affection for the historical significance of the working class relationship with hat making that began to cover and protect from the elements. not just fashion statements- hats have utilitarian value.

The flip side of this argument is that the royal family essentially sits on tremendous amounts of money. With this wedding, they'll be spending millions on food, flowers, clothes and more....and all of that generates jobs. Yes, the taxpayers there will pick up the bill for the security...but those are jobs too.
Not saying it's right, but I don't see the royal family just outright donating those millions....but if they spend them, generating work and jobs....that creates a positive ripple effect economically that will benefit an awful lot of people.

I for one am glad that I do not have to suffer under foreign rule in my homeland...and someday the people of Northern Ireland wont have to either....
I'm a foreigner in your book. I'm going nowhere.
Keep living your fantasies. The rest of us, the real people of Northern Ireland, not the people you read about in textbooks .... we, whether Protestant, Catholic or Dissenter, continue to get on with the most important thing which is living and working together in a Northern Ireland for all of us.
Yesterday, our main city of Belfast basked in glorious sunshine and during the day I caught up with friends of all religious backgrounds and political opinions, and none, on one of my (unfortunately not as frequent as I would like) visits back home.
I don't give a **** about the Royal Wedding ... the Royal family don't represent anything of me. However, I'm strongly Northern Irish - it's at the core of who I am and more important, for me, than any form of gender identity or personal identity.
Any challenge to that and I'll come down on it massively - your posts don't represent a challenge as they are the sort of stuff an idiotic 13 year old boy with a box of kleenex tissues would write but they are provocative so I respond.
Bit of advice - if you want to post something about Northern Ireland again, better than you understand at least a small bit of what you write about. We are a complex people and we don't suffer idiots gladly.

Stating an opinion isn't, in itself, provocative. However, if, in stating an opinion, you offend and ostracise, then it is provocative. That's what you did and, not only once but twice.
I don't have an issue with you over your support, or otherwise, for the monarchy or corruption or whatever / however you try to camouflage your earlier statements.
My issue is your sectarian and ethnic remarks about Northern Ireland and that's what I've called you out on. That's what I'll continue to call you out on. I've got your card marked.

For those concerned about the cost of the Royal Wedding...
http://royalwedding.yahoo.com/blogs/the-royal-wedding-who-pays-the-bill-86
Pretty reasonable, I'd say, especially given the fact that many much needed millions will be coming into the UK as a result of the wedding and, indirectly, 'feeding the hungry'.
Not being sarcastic here, I'm really not, but I guess it's hard to understand why the wedding is a good thing unless you have a real royal family of your own as opposed to a culture strewn with wannabes such as Paris Hilton.

I can't say that I have any interest in staying up to watch it, although I may be up late enough to catch a few bits and pieces. I think the gf is planning on staying up for it though and I have a few friends that have mentioned either watching it or DVR'ing to watch later.
I am somewhat interested in the dress and looking forward to the news reports tomorrow. I'm sure I will be able to get my fill on the interwebs.
With all that being said, I do think it's very cool to hear about the different ways that people are celebrating this events. I've lost count of the number of local events that are happening, including the tea house in Seattle that is opening at 1 a.m. There's everything from breakfast at a local pub to some extra super fancy expensive, sold out the day after the date was announced, party. The radio station I listen to is also in contact with two local women who went there for the wedding and they've been giving live updates every few hours of where they are and what they are doing. That's been kind of fun.
I wish them well and keep my fingers crossed that the only thing that goes sideways during this event is maybe a few rain drops.

I don't think Paris wants to be anything she isn't.
Perhaps you'd understand that if you weren't navigating the strewn tea and inbreeding.
No sarcasm, really.
And I'm hardly the type to hoist an American flag--But your tone is just incredibly odd--Unless you're actually a member of the wedding--Why connect our lack of personal investment with tabloid headliners?
Maybe it's because you call it "football".
I thought that I'd give my perspective on 'why all the fuss about a wedding' as an American living in the UK. I don't post on the forums much, mostly because I don't think anything I would have to say would be of either any interest or would just bait the flame throwers, and because I get very disgusted when I hear what is being said in here and how people speak to one another want no part of it...and I really don't have the time. My garden needs tending and the dogs need walking and, frankly, my heart and mind do not thrive on online conflict.
I am honored to be here in the United Kingdom and have hung out the bunting and and put up the British flag to celebrate a great day with my neighbours. England is a country of Kings and Queens and a rich history. Hollywood loves English Royalty...remember Elizabeth, Elizabeth the Golden Years, The King's Speech, The Other Boleyn Girl...and those are just recent movies.
This is the United Kingdom's cultural identity. This wedding gives the people of the United Kingdom pride and hope, most certainly it brings people together for a joyous reason. Lady Diana was well beloved and many people who loved and respected her see this as a time to remember her and to witness the marriage of her son William, the future King of the United Kingdom, because she never lived to see this day. It is an honor to be here because this is no ordinary wedding; this is history in the making and we are here to see it and as a very lovely 90 year old British man said on our news this morning " It makes me proud to be British and is a memory that will be with us all for the rest of our lives".
This is not just any wedding. These are not movie stars or multi-millionaires. This is the future King, a symbol of the United Kingdom for millions and millions of people...an estimated 2.5 Billion people watching all over the world...I think that, of all the things costing a bundle (like 2.4 Billion dollars on the American presidential elections...including 779.4 million on just one candidate's campaign) this is fully justified because the people of the United Kingdom would expect nothing less. This is their wedding too and I am happy Prince William realizes that and has shared it with us all.
So, on that note, I'm going to don my asbestos jumpsuit and get out of here...but please check out these over-priced nuptials....

I have a bit of a wedding fetish - so did watch some at 7 this morning -- mostly to see the dress - GORGEOUS! So glad it's a McQueen.
But I do not understand those bizarre sculptural hats that sit perched on foreheads in awful pastel shades. And the Queen's yellow suit - um....eek!

Was Princess Beatrice wearing the hat that looked like some sort of cookie cutter? beige and stood straight up? She had way too much eye make up on - I think both of those girls did.
Kate's dress was lovely, I thought.
I'm amused that Harry has more medals than William.
The Queen looked like she had a yellow cake on her head.
Pippa looked nice - although I don't understand why she was wearing white. Or is that just a North American thing?
Ok that was fun. Think I like Royal weddings cuz of the pagentry, the elegance, the tradition, the history, the order, the precision......I like it.
And I like an orderly, respectful crowd. (Take notice next city to win a major American sporting event).
Thanks for partaking everyone. Have a good day.

Yep, hers was even worse than Eugenie's, lol. I don't even think half the "hats" at that wedding were actual hats. They were just odd head dresses pinned to people's heads lol If it doesn't cover your head, it's not a hat!
I'm amused that Harry has more medals than William.
Amusing but not surprising. I don't think William ever served abroad.

Not being sarcastic here, I'm really not, but I guess it's hard to understand why the wedding is a good thing unless you have a real royal family of your own as opposed to a culture strewn with wannabes such as Paris Hilton.

i fell asleep. i saw the guests arriving live, but that was it.
i did just watch some rebroadcast and some highlights on the Youtube Royal Channel.
My favorite part was the carriage ride back. i love the horses and carriages. And even the Queen looked excited. i swear Phillip looks more like an old turtle all the time.
The wedding dress was lovely, but none of the other clothes wowed me.
The service was a bit archaic, and i couldn't help thinking of Sir Elton and his partner sitting there with all the talk about marriage being between a man and a woman.
The guy who actually performed the service can say a prayer, i'll give him that. The sermon, given by the more full of himself dude, was lame.
When they were exchanging vows, i liked how William had to stop himself from smiling when she was reciting her vows. i don't think she can look at him without him feeling pretty juiced.
i read once that she is a very warm person. i am glad he has that. His mom was, but so few of the royals seem to be. And they haven't looked for that in their partners. Thinking of Edward. So, anyway, good for them.

Me too- the Paris Hilton's, Charlie Sheen's, and the rest of our drug & alcohol and celebrity and attention addicted youth are no match for those two. They both completed college, he serves his country and they are seriously involved in charity work. They also demonstrated maturity in living together before marrying and really thinking about the fact that they will never have an ordinary life together. It seemed to me that they wanted very much to include the people of Britain on their special day.
My feeling about them is that they will accept their duty as part of the proud British traditions seriously. I don't envy having to live a life under so much scrutiny every breathing moment.
It made me feel good to see Britain have a day of celebration for their heritage and traditions. I enjoyed the multitude of British reporters- their pride and joy and information about their history and customs. I like British reserve anyway.
And you bet, from the numbers of people in London celebrating, some businesses that really have been going through hard times, had a good week.

The 'L' PLate was a nice touch as well, Diva. Over here that is a Learner's plate for people learning to drive. It was a beautiful event and it was so good to see everyone so happy. It's been a tough few years and this was just the boost I think the country needed. You could hear the roar outside when the Archbishop pronounced them husband and wife. 400 of those guests in the Abbey were from Prince William's charities. I thought it was very sweet that he waited until the very last moment to see her dress. He blushed just like his Mother did and said 'You're gorgeous. You are beautiful.' It was very sweet.
And Diva, that choir was wonderful. I really liked that very contempory comissioned piece, though at first J and I thought it sounded like a Disney soundtrack...but it really grew on me.

I heard (on TV) that the bridal party all wearing varying shades of white is traditional in British weddings. All the little attendants were wearing white as well.
I could have appreciated Princess Bea's hat as a kind of post-modern take on the bow if her makeup had been fresher. She looks at least a decade older than she is.
I wasn't crazy about Will's red coat, although I realize it's his uniform, I prefer a dark color, like Harry's.

To her credit it took a lot of guts to wear that to one of the most televized events of the 20th and 21st centuries. It would be cooler if it was her making a statement on the ridiculousness of these forehead ornament thingies. Alas, I think it probably wasn't *les sigh*
Then again, the more I look at the thing, the more I like it just because it's so friggin' outrageous :p I mean, I personally think these things look more than a little silly, but mostly they try to make it look "elegant" or something...but this one kind of turns that on its head and makes light of the whole thing. Even if it's unintentional...lol

It's not uncommon for the pageboys to wear white/off white as well.
What is a 'no no' is for anyone who's not in the bridal party to wear white/off white as were they to do so, they could possibly draw attention from the bride.

Watching one of a bazillion replays on cable tonight...i just love that Pippa walked up the aisle holding the hands of those two little bridesmaids...it's just so very sweet...:awww:
I've now read this entire thread.......and here's my take on the day.....
Yes, there is war and hunger and poverty and politics and tornadoes and death and...and...and.....
And for one brief moment, can we not have a little romance and fairy tales? Am I burying my head in the sand over all those other 'ugly' bits of life? You damn well better believe I AM, because in the midst of all my own personal junk called 'Life', I NEEDED a bit of the romance and fairy tales and a good, somewhat old~fashioned Love Story.
I NEEDED to giggle at some of the hats. (I'm fairly certain Beatrice & Eugenie left their make~up on from last night and just rubbed their eyes this morning....what was THAT? lol )
I NEEDED to have tears well up in my eyes over William's and Kate's love for one another.
I NEEDED to hear that lovely music ~ chamber orchestra, boys choir & trumpets ~ and oo and ah over the magnificence and history of that cathedral.
I NEEDED to try and read their lips over those sweet, whispered comments.
I NEEDED to see those hats, silly or otherwise.
I NEEDED to see those balcony kisses, 1 & 2.
I NEEDED to have JUST a few hours of forgetting that other 'stuff'.
I NEEDED to escape the cynicism just for a brief while.
I NEEDED the beauty and grandeur of it all.
I NEEDED to be proud for them, knowing that Diana was ~ WAS and IS ~ smiling down on her son.
I NEEDED to be proud, also, of my Scot/Irish/Welsh heritage.
So some of Y'all can pooh~pooh me all You want. I'm ok with that. I own my romanticism. :eyebat:

I admit that over the last six months, I've been kind of confused and amused at the amount of fascination over the royal wedding and every minute detail of it, especially on behalf of the American public. But then... I set my alarm today for 4:45 in the morning so that I wouldn't miss it. LOL
My plan was to watch it until I had to leave for work so about a half hour before Kate was to arrive at the church, I hopped in the shower. Soon after, Toxic, who had said repeatedly that she was not going to watch it, shouted at me frantically, "Hurry! The Queen is coming!" which made me laugh out loud.
It was a beautiful wedding, from the music to the classic simplicity of her dress, to the way the public rallies around and seems to really care for this young couple. When Charles and Diana married, I was a little kid, watching it while I played with my Lite Brite on the floor in front of the TV! It was kind of neat watching this wedding this morning. :)

Some people are saying Pippa shouldn't have worn white, but I thought it was really striking given that the flowers were white and the bridesmaids were too. I thought her dress complimented the brides really well. If she had worn purple or something, it would have been distracting with all that red, Williams uniform, the carpet, etc.
The hats were pretty much my favorite thing, from gorgeous to downright ridiculous!
I agree and yanno, she most certainly did not make that decision herself. There was a lot of protocol to follow and I’m sure Pippa did not have much say in what color her dress was going to be. It wouldn’t surprise me at all that that the bride’s mother was given a list of “appropriate” colors to wear.
The bride, her sister and their mother are beautiful in a very natural way to me. Dad and brother are attractive, too. They all looked anxious and stressed to me. Probably told more than once about cameras being on your face at all times!!
Pippa was great with the child attendants- they are never easy, just little kids with expectations around them to be "good." That was a pretty long ceremony for little kids to get through. One of the little girls was falling asleep in the carriage on the way back to the palace.
One thing that bothered me with the CNN coverage I watched was some misinformation about who started the Middleton's successful business- it was Carol Middleton, the Mom, not Dad. She utilized the net as a woman with growing children and ended up with a multi-million dollar business. Dad did join in as it grew, but he was not the founder. Probably smart to keep his job until they knew they could support themselves with the party supply business.

Me, too! What is wrong with a little good will toward others? Enjoying something for just the sake of enjoying something. And on the political side of this, I find it strange that there is negative opinions thrown out about a country with a monarch. Two major countries in the world under a monarchy (Britian & Canada) have had socialized medicine for years! Seems to me that their choices to take care of their people is better than in the US. Guess it is a "glass house" thang.

Hehe, tbh I wouldn't be surprised if those kids, being minor royals, had more experience in front of cameras than Pippa did :p

Same with New Zealand, Australia, the Netherlands (Queen Beatrix), Sweden (King Carl XVI), Denmark (Queen Margrethe II) and Norway (King Harald V) among others. The more liberal/socially conscious nature of these nations has more to do with their being parliamentary democracies, though it's interesting to look at how the parliamentary system evolved within these constitutional monarchies. In general, I think the parliamentary system is more democratic than the constitutional republic/presidential system of the US, which may be why the US does not compare well to the above nations when it comes to health care, education and public services.
Anyways, personally I am not opposed to constitutional monarchies or this wedding. I'm fairly indifferent and just wanted to watch it since I wasn't alive for the last one, lol. And as a history buff I think it's cool to see certain traditions being kept alive (more the military pomp, I suppose). The British royal family has little do with Britain's foreign affairs these days, or even national affairs. On a day to day basis they are insignificant in the life of the average person, but when it comes to large events like this wedding, the Commonwealth Games or something similar I think for many people the monarchy is more a symbol of unity and shared/similar values than anything else.
In many respects this wedding had the same effects as a large festival: attracted large numbers of people from around the world and thus contributing to local wealth by means of toursim. Yes, a lot of money was spent, but a lot of money was also brought in as a result. Whether they would have spent the money elsewhere or on the wedding makes little difference anyways, since they already contribute a great deal of money to charities and foreign aid. I guess I think there are more significant things to complain about than a wedding. If you didn't want to watch it or thought it silly then all you had to do was not watch... *shrug* Why not just let those who wanted to enjoy it, enjoy it?
I really enjoyed seeing the wedding and I loved that they borrowed Charles car to drive to the reception.
They both looked wonderful !
hey whats with the funky hats in England ? That was a show in itself !!
I wish them a long and happy life !

It was a fantastic opportunity for the ConDemNation Government to slip a pretty major piece of political news past the nation. Oh Mr.Cameron, you're going make even deeper swingeing cuts to the health service than you promised in your election pledges? Oh that's ok there's a Royal Wedding to stop us all worrying about it.
I believe the wedding should have been much more low key considering how many folks are losing jobs and more children than ever living in poverty.
Just a Brit speaking my mind...
