One of My fondest memories is of a hot summer evening, coming home from an outing with the woman I loved and walking in the house and realizing she was not behind Me, when I looked out the window that overlooked the backyard I witnessed her chasing fireflies and giggling...I have never seen anything...quite...so...beautiful. I miss her still.

I have many fond memories from my childhood.

In this particular one, I was up at my Uncle Tom's camp (a beautiful handcrafted log cabin in the Adirondacks, where I spent many of my formative years) with my Grandparents. The camp is on a stretch of white water river and in the middle of the woods. As young children we were encouraged to explore and play; and I was quite rough & tumble.

I remember running breakneck through the woods, down hills and lithely over roots and boulders, into ravines and over streams. I was laughing and squealing with glee and it felt like flying - I remember thinking (in my 7year old brain) "this is what freedom feels like".

I still hold that memory close, especially when I am feeling overwhelmed with stress and obligation.

My fond memories are all about cars. Driving my grandfather's Packard, my 62 Caddy, 68 black Bug, 68 Fury, 76 Dodge Monaco, and restoring my 75 popup Westfalia VW camper van. Now, I am making new memories restoring my 76 dispatch jeep.

It's odd the things that stick with you.

I once overheard a co-worker telling another co-worker that no matter how tough this is(the job), at the end of the day we still have each other. For some reason that comforted Me through a lot of 80 hour work weeks.

It is simple, obvious and trite, and it still comforts Me today.

When she sat naked, at My feet and read Me The Velveteen Rabbit while I wept.

Waking and saddling up in the cold dark, riding out over the mesa and listening to the sounds of saddle leather, the high pitched ring of bits and spurs, shod hooves over rock, that and the faint glow from a cigarette being dragged on the only way I knew there were other riders around me in the pre-dawn dark. No talking, we weren't quite awake and we weren't to the cattle.

Then the sun broke over the plains, shot clean and undiffused between two volcanic hills, a beacon over the grasslands. I could see who I rode with now, Roger Long, Old Jessie the Drunk, Harvey Shannon, Raymond, and others whose names I've forgotten.

But what I remember most was the way the sound began to rise, eerie, mournful, broken and hopeful as an enormous flock of Sandhill Cranes suddenly made their migratory way above us.

In that moment, I made a mental note, and thanked my favorite and good mare for bringing me there, right then, that day.

December 5th, 2005. I got on a plane, Hawaii bound. CherryFemme. There she was with that incredible smile. I started my life again and left everything else behind me. Just like magic.

Election Night 2002 in Michigan. It was the night I had worked my whole life for up until then. Nothing in my career will ever top it.

December 23, 2010 - on this day, and only with the strength, support and encouragement of a very special friend, i was able to conquer something that terrified me to the point of hyperventilation and/or panic attacks...

Staying in a rustic commune in New Hampshire where the most exciting thing we (the children) did was kneel beside the water and stay quiet and still until tadpoles and minnows swam into our open hands.

My Waterfront Director years at summer camp.
I would go down to my waterfront and swim some laps. The mist would still be on the water and camp was still asleep. It was just me and the water surrounded by the still woods.

I do miss it but think of it fondly.

After posting about my early morning swims, I started thinking about my years working summer camp. Those are most definitely some of my fondset memories. But I find what stands out most are the moments I could find to be by myself amongst the hustle and bustle of all the kids and counselors.

Second in line down memory lane :
Going down to the stables. Smelling the hay and horses. I would tack up Diego and take him out on the trails for a bit. He was an old guy, but by far my favorite. I could get lost in my thoughts and just let him go where ever he wished. I would often take my boy Fruitcake with me and he would trot beside Diego with occasional sprints into the woods to chase some unknown sound.

I like this thread :)

My Grandmother and I rushing back to her house from a family gathering in progress because she just KNEW she left a pan on the stove, and walking into smoke thicker than pea soup! Holy Mother you should have seen us running through the house opening doors and windows, flapping our arms at all that horrid, stinky smoke..... The sight the two of us must have made!:seeingstars:

While teaching My niece and nephew how to ride the city bus, My nephew gave someone less fortunate all the change he had in his pocket, after a few moments passed he looked at Me and said "that really felt good" (he was about 10). I just smiled at him - inside and out.

I have many obvious fond memories that I hold close to my heart.

But one from when I was a kid was when my 3rd grade teacher whom I loved greatly begged my parents not to transfer me to yet another school. They did anyway but I will never forget her face smiling at me as she tried to convince my parents that I should stay, and that she would pick me up and drive me home every day.

I won't ever forget you Ms Yoachim!

Update - December 23, 2011

On the one year anniversary of this event, and only with the strength, support and encouragement of the same very special friend, i was able to conquer the second, and by far worse, part of this fear...

This was after recreating the initial event, though in a somewhat more "surprising" and invigorating manner...LOL
