View Full Version : What is your favorite childhood toy?

Some years go, I ran a collectible toy store in a local antique mall. One of my favorite things was to ask my customers what their favorite childhood toy was. Not only did it give me information, but you could see the look of nostalgia in their eyes as they described their favorite and maybe for just a minute, no matter what their current problems, it took them back to a happier place and time.
So what is your favorite, the thing you remember playing with the most? I had mostly boy toys growing up and my favorite was the Marx Best of the West Geronimo and General Custer.

I had a few favorites growing up,

Rockem'Sock'em Robots

Hot Wheels and the track, the orange track with the power - paks to make them go faster

Slot Car Racing set, I still have the cars

The board game "Smess"

A marx shooting gallery, it shot small metal balls

and I had a rubber horseshoe game that I loved

omg! I lovvvvved Geraldine! I still have my old records. :)

I'm not sure what my fav toys were. I think I'd have to go with my Tonka set. They were huge (well, huge to a kid lol) steel toys that were rideable and workable! I had the dump truck, backhoe and bulldozer. They were yellow. I loved them. I spent hours digging and hauling dirt and rocks. I still had the dump truck until a couple years ago when I decided to make a planter out of it for my gramma. Now it's sitting in her front yard full of pretty flowers...lol

I still have my Hungry Hippos game too. The game was ok but it was much more fun daring my younger cousins to shove those little balls up their noses...lol

My favorite childhood toys were typically elephant-related ... started out with the famous childrens' books about the adventures of Babar the Elephant. Even today, I find it hard to resist a cuddly elephant in a toystore.

I much more likely cuddly toys than dolls, whether boy or girl-themed, although I confess to loving this doll that I was given as a present only a few years ago .... I'm not necessarily sympathetic towards all of Dr Laura's views, or the way that she presents them, but I do confess that I've a bit of a crush on her, esp with her yellow stilletoes:

Thats an easy one for me,I had Lincon loggs, farm and ranch sets.tou horses of all kind with every emagnal accesoire to be had.Onde I bought a huge toy pickup truck with a goose neck trailer with all the horses to put in it..I was about 9 or so.I built all kinds of ranch setups, rodeo arenas, pasture sceans with trees as well as horses..wasnt to long till I finaly got a drivers licence at 15 that I had my first real ntruck and gooseneck trailer that looks very much like the toy ones I had as a kid...only they were the real thing with real horses...Oh yes,I was on topof the worls with all that...liveing the dream.

OOOH!
I loved my:
Lincoln logs
Girder and panel set
Mousetrap game
matchbox cars

and the best of all were all sorts of little plastic animals -I had in several coffee cans full of them. I had hundreds of them and would play with them for HOURS.

I also loved my Jane West doll and would make her do "things" (insert eyebrow waggle) to my sister's Barbies and my Lone Ranger doll (the pervieness arrived early)

my Barbies and my brother's GI Joe stuff - the uniforms and totally cool footlocker with all those lovely accessories...i used to dress Barbie in something very pretty and her "sporty" friend Midge would wear GI Joe's uniforms, etc. and Ken's clothes too...then they'd drive off in GI Joe's Jeep, a Tonka Jeep or a Cox Dune Buggy...

I don't remember many toys while living at Mom's; mostly I played on the farm (with tonka trucks & toy cars, a fishing pole or what ever was available to make mud pies) or on a trail in the mountains there.
But I fondly recall a couple toys that my Great Gramma ("lil Gma") gave me to quietly entertain myself while at church or when she had company....
http://dieline.typepad.com/blog/images/2008/01/12/spunkydogs.jpg http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRze4JIfa5PLGYaaMpe_JRefgqRpuSMl jSFEqpkUFXm28r4v8s3
With all I've been through or lost all these many years.... I still have these. I adored that woman.... her house was filled with many fascinating things and books that would take our imagination to all corners of the world.... but every time I hold these trinkets, I still feel her love and attention she gave me.

Gemmie reminded me....

my huge gray stuffed mouse with big floppy ears...that I received for an Easter gift when I was 3 from Mom when she forgot to get me any Easter bunny stuff before she arrived at Lil Gma's to pick me up after work (Gma made her go back out, but all she could find was that mouse)... that mouse was so well loved for years, that he got very flat and thread bare. Then there was my favorite sock monkey that a church lady made me before she passed away from cancer. Both the mouse and monkey were lost during a move from Indiana to Virginia when I was 10. But I loved them, memories about them and the people who gave them to me. Sometimes, for me, it's not the toy that I'm so fond of.... it's the link to special people and special memories.

Reading all the posts helps me remember some favorites.

I loved Etch-A-Sketch, Viewmaster, and Spirograph. I still remember receiving my Easy Bake Oven--a favorite for many years. My mother was a teacher, and I liked playing "school" with all of the crafts and teaching tools that she had leftover from school. I also liked using her craft books to make stuff--still remember a whole village made out of cereal boxes and oatmeal canisters.

I had a lot of dolls, but I don't remember playing with them very much. I did like to pretend that Barbie, Ken, and family were really alive and living in shoe boxes in my closet. I think I was eight or nine, and I constructed a whole drama about them, ala' "The Borrowers." I think I loved reading more than playing with toys.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

From ages three to six, I tried my very best to wear my cap gun and holster to bed. I was a cowboy and certain others thought the same of me. I was almost seven when I got my first BB rifle. The cap gun became instant history.

I mostly liked to play sports as a kid so my favourites were probably my hockey sticks, my purple and white Raptor's basketball, and my world cup '94 soccer ball. Even if I had no one to play with I'd spend hours on with these. I also liked my bike a lot, think it was a supercycle.

My mum used to get me lego, and she got me this medieval lego castle that I played with excessively.

Also had this blue Disney train set my parents got me fro X-mas one year (maybe 3 or 4) that I played with for years. Was a regular trainset, with merry-go-rounds and such along the track, and the figurines that fit into the train were all the disney ones like donald, mickey, pluto etc.

Couldn't find any pics of these online.

I was given a white rabbit when I was not yet walking, a stuffed animal, but it had a zipper on the belly to hold the battery for its eyes which lit up! The eyes were red. I loved that rabbit for many years, and later the zipper was the perfect element to practice "surgery"! I also got as a toddler a Pinocchio which I loved because I loved the story. But my favourite toys were always those my grandfather made for me, and all the interesting things I would find in my grandparents haberdashery store (buttons, ribbons, sewing notions, bits of fabric.....)
My grandfather was a recycler and re-user before his time, and the favourite toy he made us was a kaleidoscope, with toilet paper cardboard inserts, bits of glass and interesting buttons, and the three strips of mirrored glass. He would decorate the outside with fabric or metallic paper, and we never tired of watching him make these "miracles"!
All this was a long time ago!

By the time i was nine my mom had put a small table in my room so i could tinker with it. That erector set had me hooked and i played with it for years!!! i also stole my brothers chemistry set and learned how to start fires without fire.

I guess you could say this was my first "motorcycle" because it had a slide button that you could turn on a sound that made it sound like a motorcycle. I loved this thing!

So these weren't exactly toys.........they were things I collected...would love to have them again they were so cute,

They were called Japanese Shibaten Dolls - the myth was late at night you might hear them calling to you to wrestle with them.

The paper that came with them told you to never accept because you'd be wrestling the rest of your life lol

Being the gullible child I was......I was sure I heard them *wink* (oh Wait I'm still gullible) needless to say I never accepted their offer.

Below are a couple of pics I was able to pull off the internet - I had these dolls for so long well into my adulthood, I wish I knew where they ended up :(

I took this doll everywhere I went, dragging her along with one arm.
I played with her so much, the voice box stopped working and I still loved her as much.

I just bought this for my grandson's fifth birthday.
I loved it when I was his age and am hoping he does as much.

I think it was my spring horse. I would put Wagon Train on and ride along with the cast. The older models didn't have stirrups so I took a short piece of rope and made loops on each end and threw it over the saddle area. Voila.....stirrups!
Oh and let's not forget my Ken doll which I still have. He got to make out with all my friends Barbies. ;) My grandmother was so mad at me when I took $5 out of my Christmas money to buy him a tuxedo. Sorry Gram....clothes make the man.

Our family had a rather large acreage. We has cattle, a big garden and an orchard and my mother even reserved space for her flower garden. Because of that, we had very little time for toys because our responsibilities on the farm came first. But....

Mom and dad bought a slide and swing set, we each had a bicycle, but as for personal toys, we each only had a few.

I had dolls. Little dolls, big dolls, rag dolls. My grandmother bought an ancient crib, it was wooden, and I kept it on my side of the closet (I shared a bedroom with my only living sister) and inside the crib is where all my dolls lived safely.

I loved all the dolls I had back then. Each doll was very special to me.
