If anyone is a member of HuffPo and would like to combat some of the ignorance of people's comments under the article, here is the link:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/10/chaz-bono-why-id-like-to-_n_859867.html#comments

P.S. I am not saying he should or should not have brought Shiloh into this interview, but it is the ignorant comments about transgender issues/people with which I am frustrated. (i.e. if he still has a vagina and two XX chromosomes, he is not a man...and the raging fatphobia etc etc etc ad naseum)

The documentary is playing on OWN tonight on the West coast at 9pm, followed up by the show with Rosie O'Donnell and Chaz.

Can you get OWN from the Detroit area? I am not sure if it makes a difference if you are in Canada.

Maybe it is on later than I thought if it is coming on at nine pm for you all out there. I only looked up the shows until 11 pm. I hope they play it back another day b/c I doubt I will be up that late.

Thanks, Greyson.

Looking at tonight's lineup on OWN, it looks like it is gender night. Starting with Dr. Phil at 7pm eastern, followed by Lisa Ling, and then Chaz.

For some twisted reason I chuckled when I read this. My thought was "Every night is gender night here on the Planet."

They come in handy, can tape 2 shows and watch another that we've taped all at the same time, and it can be programed for the total series.

Seeing the footage from Chazz's childhood is painful... most kids are not so much in the public eye and looking back it feels like Sonny and Cher used Chastity like a cute little prop. How hard it must be to locate oneself when you've been promoted as an extension of your famous parents. On the other hand, Chazz's public profile is what gives him so many resources and so much access and also makes him such a potentially important spokesperson.

Interesting to watch the family wrestle with what is "masculine" and "feminine" looking back at Chastity as a little child -- how Sonny let her be a tomboy and Cher wanted a little girl she could dress up and identify with. Parents project onto their children -- making it so hard to see who they might really be.

Chazz's gf Jenny is quite a character.

What makes me smile at this is hearing him say things i've heard here from those who are transitioning. His gf echoing some things i've heard from the partners.

I am just so proud of him and anyone that goes through this makes me want to squeal. I'm just in awe, quite honestly....what a beautiful thing.

The world doesn't seem so big to me right now.

Excellent reporting (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/08/fashion/08CHAZ.html) from the NY Times regarding the documentary.

This, exactly, yes:
“Around 2001, I started analyzing lesbians. I started to realize that even really butch-acting or -dressing women still had a strong female identity that I never had.”

I'm really liking the conversation between Rosie and Chazz. Good points about difference between butch/"manly" lesbians and transmen and the internal identification as female.

Also really liked Cher's recognition of how she would feel if she woke up in the wrong body -- and appreciate the fact that Chazz does not villify his mother for her struggle as a parent with his transition.

Good that they address the complicating factor of substance/alcohol abuse and sobriety too.

One crit -- wish there had been more discussion/recognition about how being a man or a woman is not just biological, but also socially constructed -- something that the parents of trans children (as seen in the docu) must deal with long before their kids reach puberty.

I'm enjoying that conversation, as well. I'm also with you regarding Cher. My initial reaction was disappointment that she couldn't even properly refer to Chaz's gender, but I tried to be compassionate toward her position and ultimately concluded that both she and the sometimes grating Jenny are being very authentic and having to work through their own process on film. It's especially poignant when Cher responds that if she were to wake up in a man's body she would do whatever she had to do, as quickly as she could, to remedy the situation.

I would imagine Cher is grieving the loss of her only daughter, even tho she's gained a son (which she always had but never knew). She's also concerned as a parent of all the health ramifications that taking T could potentially have. It's going to take time for her to adjust just as it will for all his family, friends etcetcetc. But I'm sure the more Chazz becomes more comfortable and more happy being his true self and she sees this that she will also become happy for him and more accepting of his decision. Give her time to grieve her loss, she'll come around just as most of his close circle will. He understands that as well, he's handling it quite well.

i concur...parents have to transition too...just because she is a gay icon doesn't make Cher any less human...

i loved the fact that she knew Chaz was different from a young age - though she said "lesbian" whether or not that was correct doesn't matter...she knew there was something different.

Chaz is handling it quite well...though the testosterone seemed like it was making him rather...um...cranky at first.

I cant stomach Dr. Phil, but kudos if he does us proud. Im DVR the rest for sure.

I believe on DirectTV if you upgrade to the HD DVR you can do 4 shows at once. I really need to do that. Tonight I had to delete another so I could catch Chaz. Then dang it later I saw that it was aired again back to back, so didnt even need to DVR. arrrrgggggg
Working nights I miss most of my shows. DVR best invention since the wheel. LOL
