Any Game of Thrones fans here? Are you hooked on this show the way I am?
I'd love to discuss. :tea:

The books are impressive and we're just starting to watch the TV series. I think we missed the first few episodes. I'm hoping they re-run them before they start the 2nd series (I cannot imagine they'd start the series and not continue with the additional books)

IF the series is popular (and I think it is doing well), it will have another season. Right now I'm in love with Khal Drogo and also, *whispers*, the Imp. I can't help it. The Imp's smart-ass attitude is sexy!

I haven't read any in the series, but I will. :)
I am hooked! Christie just got the book. From the looks of it, it is a trilogy?...or series???
I like the Imp too. Is he the same guy from Station Agent? At any rate, I do love his character. He is the only Lannister I like, though! Grrr spit on the rest...

A Song of Ice and Fire is a series of epic fantasy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_fantasy) novels by American novelist and screenwriter George R. R. Martin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_R._R._Martin). Martin began writing the series in 1991 and the first volume was published in 1996. Originally planned as a trilogy, the series now consists of four published volumes with the fifth expected to be published on July 12, 2011 and a further two planned. In addition there are three prequel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prequel) novellas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novellas) available, with several more planned, and a series of novellas consisting of excerpts of the main novels. One of these excerpt novellas has won a Hugo Award (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_Award). The series has been translated into more than 20 languages[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Song_of_Ice_and_Fire#cite_note-0) and the fourth volume reached the top of The New York Times (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_York_Times) bestseller lists upon its release.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Song_of_Ice_and_Fire#cite_note-1) Overall, the series has more than 6 million copies in print in the USA[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Song_of_Ice_and_Fire#cite_note-2) and sold more than 7 million worldwide.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Song_of_Ice_and_Fire#cite_note-3)

A fan of both the books and the tv series. I've been watching it fairly avidly and think it's been really well done. When they cast Sean Bean as Eddard I wasn't sure at first how closely they'd follow the books. It's cool that they cast such a well-known actor for that role.

Hehe, well if they continue to follow the books she gets much more interesting :D Dany's awesome.
I also love who they chose to cast Arya Stark and how they've portrayed her true to form. Love how they've done Jon Snow's character, too.
For those who haven't/aren't able to catch the series on TV check out Project Free TV: http://www.free-tv-video-online.me/internet/game_of_thrones/season_1.html Oh and the potlucker links are the best/most reliable, imo, even among the other fast loaders.
Btw, just cause I saw it mentioned here, HBO has actually already confirmed the second season and they're going to start production soon last I read.

I have not read the books, but geez I think I should just to get more meat (and being a vegetarian that is kinda hard to write :huhlaugh:) I am savouring every episode. I can't help but love the Imp. I have been a fan of Peter Dinklage since I watched him in The Station Agent, brilliant actor. I was pleased when I saw him in this series.
And the horses they use for the production...OMG... beautiful creatures.

EEEKKK!!! I wanna go sooo bad!!! Hopefully before the event I can scrounge up the money for a ticket!
Christie just picked up the second and third in the series and has downloaded the first for me on audio file. Reading for long periods of time makes my head hurt too much anymore, so I have become an audiobook fan over the past few years. ( I do miss the smell of books though and sniff on hers sometimes)
It is kind of tricky listening to an attack of the white walkers while head down weedeating. Feels like someone has snuck up on me!
Winter of 2012 is a long way away... I think that is when the next season airs. :vigil:

I haven't read the rest of this thread...because I just started watching the first season. I'd heard about it...and several friends insisted I'd love it...but that usually makes me steer clear of actually watching (I always think it won't live up to the hype and I'll be disappointed). But...I've started watching the first season On Demand...and I gotta confess, I've been sucked in! I'm trying to watch all the episodes before the second season starts...hence not reading the rest of the thread. I don't wanna know what happens before I finish watching! :)

Great first episode!
Thoughts on new characters (I've read all the books): I like Davos and Stannis- they come off well, or at least as I imagined. Melisandre doesn't seem nearly as commanding and foreboding though. And Craster is much too well groomed.
Oh, and the baby dragons (well, dragon, only got to see one) are so cute. I want one!
aishah

davos and stannis were well-cast...i'm also iffy on craster. i agree with you jd that melisandre is not nearly as commanding as i thought she'd be.
i didn't think the actor playing jaime really fit his character well in the first season, but he grew on me in the first episode of this season. i liked his portrayal before, it just didn't feel true to the character in the books.
i love the exchange between dany and her bloodriders in this episode :) and jorah as well. it's kind of funny,
spoiler for the books/later storylines
the whole dany/jorah unrequited love thing in the book bored me half to death, to be honest. but the chemistry between emilia clarke and iain glenn in the first season made me a hardcore dany/jorah shipper. now i'm going to have a huge huge sad when it goes into the unrequited love bit later :(
tyrion was amazing in the first episode :)

I thought it was a great first episode. I love the series. Tyrion was great. I love his character. And Peter is a fabo actor!! And I just want to hang Joffrey. Don't spoil it for me... those who have read the story already. Psychopath... that was my first diagnosis. :canadian:
I am halfway through the first book. It has been AGES since I have read a fiction book, but... I am not giving up. I am enjoying the "fill in the blanks" aspect of the book.
I think this is going to be A GREAT SEASON!!!

it would be cool if it was set in modern day, but it would be a total break from the fantasy genre. it is kind of funny and weird how fantasy is always assumed to be in a medieval england sort of setting though. there's an interesting article about game of thrones and accents...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-17554816
But Game of Thrones, much of which was filmed in Northern Ireland, has only one American actor as a central character, Peter Dinklage. He does his part with a rather posh English accent.
"A New York accent wouldn't work," Dinklage, who was born in New Jersey and plays scheming Tyrion Lannister, recently explained to the Calgary Herald. "It doesn't sound right."
And if you go on the forums you see American fans' expectations have been met.
"I'm not an expert by any means, but what I find interesting is that they sound to my American ears to be not only British accents, but regional British accents," writes Independent George on the Ice and Fire Forum.
"The North sounds vaguely Scottish to me, Robert sounded like he was from Northern England, I know the DVD commentary track to episode six said that the Vale was cast as predominantly Welsh (though I couldn't identify a Welsh accent if my life depended on it)."
He adds: "Hopefully one of our British readers can set me straight. For natives, it could be as jarring as watching a western where everybody's speaking Italian. Oh, wait... "
Martin, the creator of the Song of Ice And Fire series of books, was inspired a great deal by European Medieval history," says Stephen Tierney, administrator of the Game of Thrones UK fansite.
"As such his characters reflect that and if you read the books and listen to the cadence of the characters' voices you will find that they do sound more regionally British than they do American.
"Since it is a mediaeval fantasy saga with more emphasis on the characters than on witches and wizards I do think the regional British accents work very well. The show does place a lot of emphasis on a north/south divide and seeing the northern House Stark going up against the distinctly southern House Lannister provides a great contrast and helps the viewers know which side everyone is on."
It's not just fantasy that has developed a British accent default setting, even for American audiences. For ancient Greece and Rome - as seen in everything from Spartacus to HBO/BBC's Rome series - audiences again expect UK accents. One has only to cast one's mind back to Joaquin Phoenix's accent in Gladiator for a classic example.
Some have a simple explanation for the British invasion of fantasy land - Kevin Costner.
Although not strictly part of the genre, his US/British accent in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves was so jarring, and out of historical context, that it stood as a warning to all future directors. Or so the theory goes.
Martin has said English accents work best for fantasy, as the genre is rooted in the Middle Ages.
"It's full of castles and lords and swords and knights and all the other trappings that we associate with England in this country. It seems natural. It would be hard to do with a group of actors who had thick Southern accents," he has commented.
"You would think why not just film it in the states with famous American actors, especially since George RR Martin, who wrote the books originally, has been called the American Tolkien? You would think this is an American thing," says Dan Wright, producer of UK-based Game of Thrones fan show Thronecast.
"But originally the books were sourced and based around at least a working knowledge of British history, the War of the Roses and things like that, and that certainly comes out in the way the royal family is structured and that sort of thing."
But Game of Thrones is on a premium cable channel. There is still a long way to go before British actors are allowed to use their own accents on network television in mainstream roles.

Craster, for me, was far too young and hearty. I also wasn't sold on Stannis who I felt needed to be larger but I loved Davos. And Melisandre was perfection.

Yeah, I was so excited to watch the second season that when I saw there was more than one available already I readily watched them both. But then it was a buzz kill at the end to realise that that only means I have to wait until next week for another episode, lol. Ah well. I'm just happy it doesn't seem like there will be any huge gaps again between episodes this season. I really hate when good series do that and you have more than a month to wait for a new episode. If GoT started doing that I'd die of impatience.
On a side note, the scene between Arya and Gendry in The Night Lands was hilariously done. I still think she was one of the best cast characters.

watching episode five...i'm amazed at how much they've deviated from the books, especially with margaery tyrell's character, but i guess it is more sensationalist for tv this way. and natalie dormer played a similar role in the tudors, so it would fit well here.
foxyshaman
05-04-2012, 10:32 AM
They have deviated from the books. But I wonder if it isn't, for the most part, because there are so many characters in the book with back story that can't be conveyed in ten hours of TV. I wonder if the writers aren't trying to mash together scenes to make it coherent for the audience. As well as spice it up a bit. There was never the love making scene between Renly and her where she offers her brother to be in the room. I was waiting for that in the book... nope. Renly died. I thought it would have made interesting reading.
I am glad I am reading the books as it does fill in the obvious holes in character motivation and back story. Just about finished book 2. It has been so many years since I have read fiction, well a long book fiction, that it took me a long time to get back into the swing of reading for fun and not for learning... (derail end)

05-04-2012, 10:37 AM
yeah, i definitely understand why they've deviated from the books and they've done it in really interesting ways, so i'm not holding it against them :) (i was kind of obsessed with the books for a decade before this came out, so i'm one of those slightly nitpicky people.) i do think it might present interesting problems since the book series isn't completed yet...assuming they decide to do all seven seasons, once books six and seven are completed it'll be interesting to see if that throws any wrenches in the works based on how they change the storylines.
i am realllly glad they've simplified some of the character roles and cut out/merged extraneous characters. (though, really, i think they should have left asha greyjoy's name as asha instead of changing it to yara. but i just really like the name.)

(if you are meaning the capture of the dragons & the carnage),Yes, it was hard to watch, and I am almost sure the Warlocks have something to do with it..I mean it's kind of obvious a hooded cloaked figure..someone in a blog pointed out you cannot rilly know wild things or the reasons why..but to cage them made them vulnerable, so how could they have defended themselves? Daennerys is wise (for her years) but inexperienced and she has to learn a horrible lesson..that she can only trust herself (in certain matters)..it will be interesting to see how this is handled..I expect it will be worth the price of admission (hopefully)!

So true! I'm glad a few got the axe this year though...I'll refrain from any spoilers.

Planning to re-watch season 4 to stop my post GOT blues... But now the dilemma deepens cause I'm torn between waiting for season 5 (next year!!!) or start to read the books everyone keeps going on about to keep The Games alive...decision decision

I am unhappy she chained the dragons. I don't believe this is wise. She is their mother and should have by now some understanding of their nature.

I was unhappy she chained them as well, but we are talking about dragons here (or any animal really).
Animals are animals. Their 'nature' is to do what they instinctively know to do and that is to kill/hunt. When has man at any point in time ever "controlled" an animal let alone themselves..lol...Dany has yet to truly understand and learn to "control" her fire breathing children.
Hopefully as the episodes continue she will learn how to use them to her advantage. But I doubt she will ever be able to truly "control' them. Her character is developing tremendously well and her scenes on the show are exciting!! I am a serious fan of the show. I'm slow to get into the books, but I will :-)
Season 5 has had some very intense and kick ass scenes. Stannis (sp) is a tool..to put it mildly. Episode 9 where he allowed the crazy, red headed witch woman to uhh..I won't spoil in case some of you haven't seen it. That turned my stomach to say the least

I am not even looking at the other posts in here yet.
About a month ago the GF and I started watching Game of Thrones for the first time.
Both of us at different times, would turn HBO to a particular episode but since we never started with season 1, episode 1; it never made sense and we were clueless.
We have just finished seasons 1 and 2, after starting with the very first episode and really love it.
We are ready for season 3.
(We are alternating between GOT and OITNB!)

Not the only one
FOR NOW!
I may quit if they kill another Direwolf. All we have left is Ghost! I mean theoretically Nymeria is out there hiding in the woods where she bit Joffrey but will they bring her back?

Somehow I overlooked this thread!!
No you are not the only fans! The GF and I did not start to watch it until season 3 for some strange reason but then we binged and got on the GOT train.
Now it is a weekly event.
I love everything about it but must get ready for work now so will be back later to chat all things GOT.
Dani, mother of dragons- my favorite femme and Brienne (spelling? No time to check) is my favorite Butch in shining armor!!

I'm only tempted to read the books when the season ends because the withdrawal is so strong. But I like the suspense of not knowing what is going to happen next so I'll refrain from reading them until its all over.

Yay another GOT fan :D I also started late watching them but so many people were telling me how unbelievably good and I was hooked after a few episodes.
Yara Greyjoy has got to be my favorite butch and I like the new Red Priestess Kinvara for femme appeal.
I can't believe we're already halfway through season 6  so I look forward to more GOT chitchat!

The TV series has passed the books, so you would not see any spoilers, you would just get more details and see where the show's writers have added or subtracted characters and storylines (for example: Renly and Loras are not gay in the books)

I'd expected to be disappointed in the television adaptation since I love the books so much, but the series is excellent. July can't come soon enough.
I love how George R.R. Martin recently compared Donald Trump to Joffrey:
Martin is gratified to see his books and the show used to discuss everything from global warming to Donald Trump. "I think Joffrey is now the king in America," Martin told me, referring to Thrones' sadistic, power-mad brat. "And he's grown up just as petulant and irrational as he was when he was thirteen in the books."

A sadistic, power-mad brat indeed.

I love this show, but I must admit once the season starts, I will not be looking to this thread for spoiler, as I tend to bing watch all at once or over a couple days.. . I am about to start my rewatching from the beginning as I always do just to be 'kind of in the now' and not lost.. lol
I am also very excited that they have decided to expand to 2 more seasons to finalize rather than 1 they were hinting about, even if they are shorter seasons..
