The media mogul Oprah Winfrey will end her iconic daytime talk show, “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” in 2011 as she prepares to start a cable channel of her own.

A spokeswoman for Ms. Winfrey’s production company confirmed Thursday evening that Ms. Winfrey will make the announcement on her program on Friday. The plans were first reported by WABC, the ABC affiliate in New York City.

“The sun will set on the Oprah show as its 25th season draws to a close on September 9, 2011,” WABC said.

In a statement, CBS Television Distribution said, “We have the greatest respect for Oprah and wish her nothing but the best in her future endeavors. We know that anything she turns her hand to will be a great success. We look forward to working with her for the next several years, and hopefully afterwards as well.”

Ms. Winfrey, 55, informed her talk show staff of the decision on Thursday afternoon. The news immediately rattled the television world, which had expected that she would make a decision about the fate of her program by the end of the year.

After her broadcast talk show winds down, Ms. Winfrey will concentrate exclusively on her forthcoming cable channel, OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. The channel is a joint venture between her production company and Discovery Communications. Getting the channel off the ground has proved challenging amid management turnover and an uncertain advertising climate.

OWN will premiere on cable in January 2011, according to a person with knowledge of Ms. Winfrey’s decision who insisted on anonymity. That timeline will theoretically give Ms. Winfrey about nine months to promote her cable channel on her existing show.

“The Oprah Winfrey Show” remains the most successful talk show in syndication, reaching about seven million viewers a day. It has been vital to the success of ABC, whose local station group has been the primary home of the show since it started in syndication in 1986.

I am not surprised. I think she wants to have a personal life, and enjoy the time doing what she enjoys doing no matter what it is. I am sure her shows will be on dvd.

Was actually on our local news as well. I totally get it though. She will have more time to become an even greater philanthropist.

Maybe she will burst indelicately out of the closet and become a big 'ole loudmouthed pissed-off RICH 'dagger like my girl Rosie O.
I certainly hope so.

Good for her. She's already in syndication. I doubt that will change, so she'll still be able to make money from her days in front of the camera (and we'll still be able to get our O fix) while she moves onward and upward behind the scenes.

Sometimes I think, "I wish she would run for congress or something big like that."

Am I the only one around here who cannot stand Oprah?

Oh, I'm sure there are others. But I do have to say that she did a lot given the racism and other obstacles she's faced over the years. And any show that's been on TV for 25 years is impressive, like her or not (I'm not overly fond of her myself but it is a feat that is rarely met these days).

I like Oprah, I respect her accomplishments. It is time for her to move on to something less public. She will be establishing a new television network and I think it is time for that as well. I will hope that it has quality programing for a wide range of individuals and does not have the "censoring" when big business owns you.

Personally, I think in addition to starting a new network the woman is getting ready to make a run for a Congerssional Seat, Senate seat or VP... with Sarah Palin not disappearing the Democrats are going to have to have a woman that is politically savvy, well liked and respected and can express herself without stuttering, saying duh or looking like she has an eyelash stuck in her eye....and she is hot and down to earth!

Will be interesting to see if she moves her home in the next 120 days...

Yes, there are others out there who do not care for Oprah, and I am one of them. I stopped liking her when I saw her interview the Hanson conjoined twins.

Nope, I have seen one maybe two shows in the years that she has been on television. I don't watch any talk shows. So it is not just her! I find them mostly (not always) exploiting of people in vulnerable situations.
