How about something terribly wild and different and not the same ol bash and grab stuff...
How about a planet bash that combines good works with good fun??

How about a bash that....combines partying with the theology of the hammer?

How about a bash located in a spot that we can all gather together during the day and help builda house...with habitat for humanity?

leave the worksite after laughter, joking aorund,,,hard work,,get a shower and stuff and then have dinner and stuff....
This will do several things: it will provide an enviornment for people to get to know one another in a manner that is more than the "good behavior bar scene"
it also builds community
it builds bridges with people who prolly will never have seen so many butches and femmes in one place before
and...selfishly we can all say...look what we did..not only are we a community that looks out for ourselves and each other but we help all people no matter their sex, age, race, sexual preference, etc etc etc etc.. now that is truly "A PLANET" one can be proud of!

i really like this idea. years back, i did some work with a buddy for habitat. it was a wonderful experience. i know some of the best bonding time i've had has come through hard work. and the feeling at the end of the day, knowing i was helping someone to have a home, was one of the most rewarding things ever.

selenay has a point, in that this is some folks' vacation and they'd rather not spend it working. can't blame folks for that. there's always plenty to see and do in a new city. i'll bet there would be some other folks who'd like doing this. perhaps we could set it up to take a crew to a jobsite and work for the day. even that would likely be a big help to someone.

if only 50 people attend the reunion (working low numbers here), if a quarter of them want to do this, that's still a crew of 12 people. that's a lot of help and hands on a work crew.

definitely sign me up for this one. provided i can make it to the reunion and all. even if 2 people show up to work, it's some help.

Brilliant!! Or going to a VA and helping a Soldier, Sailor, Airman or Marine, there are plenty that now need wheelchair ramps.

Dean, while I think that's a really noble idea, and perhaps a really great community side trip (maybe get a group of people together during/before/after the reunion who want to do that) I don't really think that would be a great idea for a reunion. For a lot of people, this is the only vacation they will get in a year (or two. or three.) If you work hard all year, you don't usually want to kill yourself on your vacation.

Speaking for myself, I would not want to do this. If I get the chance to do something really nice for myself, I don't want to have to work for 8 hours and come home exhausted, just to do it again the next day. I do that in my regular life, I don't particularly want to do that on my offtime. If I go to a reunion, it's to have fun, and be merry, and be silly, and wander around in my pajamas.

But that's just me.

I think doing some volunteer work during that long weekend would be manageable in between the gatherings and socializing.

However, some people are not physically able to do manual labor on that scale.

I think, if volunteering is an option, that there be more than one option to choose from. There are hospitals and long term care facilities that would appreciate folks coming in to visit with their patients that may not have someone in their lives or able to come and visit frequently. Or maybe some could go to a food bank to donate some time stocking and distributing goods or stop by the local GLBT community center to see if there's anything we can do to assist them.

Volunteering is a wonderful idea but I think the options need to be as diverse as our community.

I don't want to sound like I am not into volunteer work, but I swing a hammer as my part time job when I am not crawling around installing stair runners at my full time job. When I go on vacation, it is to relax and have fun with my friends.

A gathering like this is a time for me to bond with likeminded people, enjoy the fellowship, and come away feeling energized and full of positive energy. I wouldn't want to have to take a few days off AFTER my vacation to recover from swinging a hammer.....just to go right back to swinging said hammer.

It is a great idea, but not what I would prefer to do at the reunion. It is my only vacation every year.

i don't think anyone is going to pass any judgements if you don't want to swing a hammer. on the other hand, i don't the the idea should be dismissed out of hand when there seem to also be folks who would like to do this. realistically, i don't see there being activities that every single person will attend each and every one.

not everyone will want to do a spa day, or go shopping, or attend museums or any other number of available activities. this is starting to sound kinda like "we should all do this" "no, we all don't want to do this". i look at it as another optional activity for folks who want to do it. it doesn't have to be an either/or proposition. if there are folks who would like to swing a hammer and get dirty, then i'm sure someone who is in or near the hosting city can make some calls, or at least help with phone numbers and that group of people can make arrangements to volunteer time and energy to it. no harm, no foul if someone doesn't feel inclined to do that.

Hello. One way that you can have a reunion and do good is by NOT having it in Las Vegas. LV is the American capital of sex trafficking and exploitation of women, including young girls. Not spending your dollars there would be one way of doing good.

Hey Heart! Welcome Welcome!

The Reunion will definitely NOT be in Las Vegas.

Dean, I like your idea about volunteering and can try to see what opportunities would be available for folks who want to volunteer. There are always battered womens shelters and GLBTQ programs that need envelopes stuffed, cleaning, visitation, etc.

Maybe we can make it an option for folks on Saturday during some of the other activities. :)

When you figure out what city let me know and I will talk to the local habitat...and see what can be worked out.
oh and by the way its not all swinging hammers....they always need volunteers to do lots of stuff.....office work..envelope stuffing...etcetc

Please understand i did not intend for people ot get upset when i suggested this...i just imho think sometimes it is a good idea when we are being a "community" or gather as a community to make it a point to offer community work of some assortment is important....it builds bridges ....

ok i will get off my :sermon: Oh and maybe folks that dont normally do a "BASH" might be inclined to gather regionally for a weekend to do some "work" as the BFPlanet and those that dont thats fine as well...

Glad not to be in Vegas.
I want to volunteer my time with ButchFemmePlanet on this trip.

We were hoping we would have some workshop sessions or just time and space together during the Reunion, so we can talk about what ...we post about, etc. etc. Community...clothes...

The Clothing Swaps may be a great way to make a donation to the local community in Our name. Clothing is always needed and welcome.

I'm on the local Habitat for Humanity committee, and know there are opportunities anywhere you live. For those that don't know, if you wish to sign up, travel to, etc. if a build is going on, and they aren't filled up, it is a rewarding way to spend your time. http://www.habitat.org/getinv/volunteer_programs.aspx

Also, the local Children of Abuse community centers and homes need supplies, and grown ups to draw, write and visit, and , well, as you know the volunteering opportunities are endless.

Looking forward to some healthy planet visiting..

Great ideas folks!

Just FYI: I started doing the clothing swaps in 2004 during a gathering in New Orleans for another site. Some of you might remember KouklaFemme and Eshey. KouklaFemme, Eshey, and I had all met in Las Vegas in 2003 and fallen in love with one another and were busy complaining about all of the clothing that didnt fit us any longer and all of those dresses that had never been worn - and thus, the clothing swap was born.

Every year after that, we did a clothing swap at the "bash" and donated all of the leftover clothing to either a battered women's shelter or an AIDS services group. One year, (I think it was Dallas) we had so much clothing left over that it took the entire backend of an SUV!

We can certainly continue this tradition - The Femme clothing swap was always one of my favorite events. What could be better than my sisters "ooh-ing" and "aaah-ing" over one another while sipping champagne and feeling the love. The free clothes were just an excuse ;)

Cant wait to get this thing rolling!

I volunteer at HfH. There is a center about 2 minutes away from here. There is always work to be done in San Pedro, Wilmington, Harbor City, Long Beach, etc. Where I am situated in Los Angeles, I am about 20 minutes from two major populated gay (if not gay friendly) cities in southern California (Long Beach and West Hollywood). LA is thriving with possible charity work everything from skidrow, to teen homeless shelters, to...well you name it. LA would be ideal for a reunion, it is moderately inexpensive, easy to get to, and if you want to take a day trip, you are within an hour of the mountains, dessert, and ocean. It is a win win. Just sayin...

There have been some good suggestions, both before this was posted and since, as to what we could do. My question is, where did it turn into a "we all do/don't" thing for you? I posted the quoted post (see below) before G posted his, so there were other options already mentioned by myself as well as others. I'm not sure you saw them or maybe I'm not understanding you.

Saving $$ for the Planet gathering....how many ways to do it???

I thought I would post this hear cause ppl will be checking for news and viues of the goings on.The many ways we could be saving bucks for our first get together. One, I save what ever change I can. Two, I donate to the goodwill as much stuff as I can..they give u a recept with the number of ithems on it and u take the max amount allowed for deductions on your taxes for refund...this needs to be done by the end of January of 09 to count. The goodwill truck just left cause I near cleaned out the garage..then there are garage sales that work well hear.Anyone with money saveing ideas please post them for all to see,who knows what we can come up with.

I saved my change for a year, and came up with about $90.oo. This time I am putting away $100.oo a month. A One Hundred Dollar Bill I refuse to spend, plus saving all the singles I get back, go into the change jar this time. Then it won't seem so costly:tanning:

Our Airfares are the most clostly. Hotel costs next expensive. We, :cowboy::3femme: like to get to the hotel a day before the events start, and leave the day after the last event :heartbeat::love1:...SO HOPE ADMIN keeps that in mind when blocking room rates..:skateboard::tanning:

I just used Priceline to rent a car for 6 days while traveling in Oregon and bid $125.oo and got that price.

~~kEEPING ONE EYE ON THIS THREAD~~

I would like to suggest a beach be involved in the reunion... Harbor cruises and carnival board walks and "SEAFOOD".

I enjoy being in good company and watching folks set thier eating etiquette get set aside momentaryily, to suck on the shells and thier fingers.

Ok, I love Austin and all, but when I hear so many people talking about Texas, and coastal beaches...well, I suggest Houston, because if anyone wants to go the the beach, Galveston is only about 30 minutes away.

I also know that Austin has a heavy "bar neighborhood" but only so many of them are LGBT.

Houston on the other hand has the "Montrose Area" where LGBT bars are often walking distance from one another, or at the very least, an extremely short drive (i.e. 2-3 minutes). We have a "Chances", which is four bars in one, and would be a comfort zone for any of the population you would find on The Planet. The crowd there is as diverse as our little group here is. And...you could perhaps find some interesting charity drag shows to view while here. There's one almost every night of a weekend, at one of the bars.

You talk about seafood? Hey, we are just as coastal and up for fresh seafood as NOLA!

What can I say, I have to put in a shameless plug for my hometown.

That's right, I'm a rare breed. I'm a Native Houstonian!

WT

P.S. I'll almost betcha we'd have Pinky for sure if we do it here!

LOVING THIS IDEA!! "The Tigress" has made several valid points..... Houston is centrally located and has everything to offer... Austin Rocks!.... Either way.... it is a win win!!!
