Like most people, I've never much cared for jogging or running.

Four months ago, I started using Weight Watchers online and eventually started adding a little exercise to the mix......weights and cardio in the form of stationary bike, stairs, and hills.

I avoided jogging because......well.......because I don't like it.

The weight loss has been promising as well as losing inches around my belly. Truthfully, the belly fat has been my issue. I finally accepted that the only way to rid myself of the last few pounds and inches is to start jogging.

Just last week, on September 1, I started a walk/jog program. I have surprised myself each day at how much of my time has been spent on jogging. I assume that the time I spent running stairs and hills got me in a little better shape than I realized.

So I have to admit that it hasn't been miserable and that I do feel inclined to continue down this path. I'd like to call myself a "jogger" one day, but I know I have to earn those stripes.

For now, I am eternally gratefully that I'm doing this, that nothing is hurting, and that I feel more and more confident each day. Today, for example, one of my "jog sessions" was 10-minutes long!! I jogged 10 consecutive minutes. :) (I did a total of 28 minutes today; my best was 30:30.)

My walk time between jogging sessions is 3 minutes, and I'm averaging 8 minutes of jogging per jog session. I fully expected to start with jog 1 and walk 4 for about 30 minutes, so you can probably see why I have surprised myself.

Any others here on the Planet who jog or run? How long have you been doing it? What is your workout like?

I used to run, and just started a couch to 5k program :). I can vouch that running or jogging feels great and is good for the mind :)

I have always been a walker.. Well a power walker. I prefer to go up stairs no matter how many flights to taking the elevator. I also park as far back as I dare and walk and love to watch people who are looking for a parking space follow me then give up. Ha Ha
I did start jogging myself a few years ago to also get rid of that spread in the middle. I am not a big eater but notice with age comes that middle spread. I have felt more energy and more of a positive attitude in my life when I am running. I started doing the run/walk to save my legs. Sometimes they really hurt after. I think it is a great way to listen to yourself think things through and also the best form of exercise at least for me. Inside fitness centers are just not for me.

Do you have a 5K already scheduled......like a goal date?

Good luck on your program!

I have trouble with fitness centers too, Amber. I try, but it's just too much to be in that kind of environment doing BODY work with so many strangers. Just not a fan...

I am looking forward to the time when I can actually think about something other than the jogging!!! I'm still at the point where I look ahead for a marker where I have permission to check the time. Ha! I imagine it will be much more pleasant for me when I'm not worried about how long it has been or how much more I should go.

I guess when I get to where I can go for 20 or 30 minutes without stopping I will feel less stressed about it.

Thanks for your post. :)

I've recently added running to my exercise routine.

I've never particularly enjoyed it and I've not run consistently since I was a teenager and training for sports teams.

I'm currently in week 5 of the C25k programme, but I'll be running week 4 again because I had a miserable time of it last week. Week 4 heralds in the 5minute intervals and I struggled through every single one of them.

I started C25k because I was growing bored with speed walking and I knew I needed to up my aerobic activity to continue to lose weight. I also needed an aerobic activity that required very little money. My house is on a bike path that stretches for miles in either direction, so I bought a decent pair of running shoes and started.

I'm not focused on running a 5k, it would be a great "side effect", but its not my goal.

My goal is to be able to run for 30-45minutes comfortably so that I can feel fit and that I'm doing my best to take care of my heart, so that I can lose/maintain weight, and so I have an aerobic activity that I can do anywhere.

It has been really challenging. And right now I'm feeling very impatient with myself. I want it to hurt less and be easier, and now please.

I had a few runs, two weeks back, when I had that rush of endorphins afterwards and I felt like a million dollars. I'd quite like that feeling again. And I'd love to get to a point where that is how I feel after every run.

Two things I'm currently struggling with and would love to hear other people's experiences of:

Finding a comfortable pace as the running intervals become longer
and breath control, I'm still having a hard time maintaining a good breathing rhythm.

Always love your posts! Thanks for sharing your experiences here, Sparkle.

I gotta tell you... I don't have working knowledge of what I am/am not doing right now. I'm just doing it. I will say, though, that I start my little jog at what I would call a snail's pace because I know me and if I start out any faster it will hurt and I will quit.

My wife told me that as she looks around at others, I'm going at their pace or better. I find that hard to believe because I feel like I'm just shuffling along, but I may very well be unaware of exactly how strong my pace is. *shrug*

My breathing feels good, which really is the most shocking part of all for me. And I wish I could tell you what I'm doing, but I really don't know; I just started this, and I gave myself permission to go slow so that I could keep moving at a pace other than a walk for longer and longer periods of time.

Sometimes I'm afraid if I think too much about it, I'll mess myself up. I'm pretty sure I'll get to a point where I want to do better and have more knowledge of what's really going on; until then, I'm freakin' stoked that I haven't quit yet!! :|

I like your thoughts about having an activity you can do anywhere. I never thought about it that way before.

Kelt, in the weight loss thread, shared this article with me. It's exactly what I needed to reinforce my decision to go this route.

Hi Thinker.

Just like you, I went from moving to moving more. Then up stairs. To some jogging and then some running and some walking. I wasn't enjoying running or jogging, but was getting my heart rate up and knew I was doing my heart good. Like you, kept doing it, every day a little more, and a little longer. One day I RAN long enough to catch what they call the runners high. Wow. I wanted that every time I ran, and it came easier, quicker the more I ran. Within a reasonable amount of time, I became a runner.

I started to enter 5k's, 10'ks, half marathons, full marathons.....it's still my activity of choice-as I get into the *zone* very quickly.

Unfortunately, I have very high arches and do not have the feet to be a runner. I bought the arch supports (orthotics) but still sufferred from planar fascitis. Nothing like waking up every morning and walking on knife blades. Reluctantly, I have had to accept the elliptical machine in the gym. Every once in a while, I'll push the envelope and take off for a couple mile run, knowing darn well I am risking inviting plantar fascitis back into my life.
I am considering a 10 k in October. I will only train on the eliptical. No road work. IF I do this. It is good for you, but it's not for every one.:goodluck:

Congratulations on the 10 minute milestone! That is fantastic!

I have been running for about 6 years now, and I finally do not giggle when I call myself a runner.

I love it. When I started I could not run for more than 3 minutes and even then I was staring at my watch convinced that I had encountered a small tear in the time-space continuum. It was awful. It stayed pretty hard for a while, but I lived off the accomplishment I felt at the end of the run. Eventually, I found that if I was consistent it actually got easier and I started to enjoy it even during the run. I thought that only happened for those skinny bitches in their boy shorts and jog bras. Nope, it is for us mortal folk too!

I found that I like doing running events and I have run a lot of them. I am a tad bit obsessive at times. I prefer running on trails, while harder due to hills, are much more enjoyable due to scenery. "Pretty" will distract me from just about anything. I am currently training for my 13th marathon in Portland in October, which is a road marathon, but in a city I have never been to so I am excited.

I love talking to runners, new and experienced and have had the honor of running many first 5ks, 10ks, half marathons and marathons with new runners.

I am UBER excited about this thread. (I will calm down, sorry :) )

Oh and as for breathing rhythm, slow down. It may feel like you are running WAY too slow and just shuffling, but you can get into a rhythm with your breathing and go longer distances. Eventually, by virtue of increased fitness, you will get faster. There are other tricks to getting faster, but I would focus on getting distance and fitness first and then work on speedwork. Just my 2 cents. I am by NO means an expert, but I have a hell of a lot of fun when I run.

Great thread Thinker! I have always done a walk/run combo...even worked myself up to running 2 miles at one point, but once school started I quit running. Now I have started again and it is not as easy this time because I have been so inactive when studying.

I have a 1 mile route through my neighborhood that is all different terrains from flat, up-hill, and down-hill. It zig-zags around, so I run the north/south blocks and walk the east/west blocks. I finally got a digital watch last night and am going to start timing how much I am running vs. walking.

I am very committed to making this work this time! Especially now that I can go with my boxer Frankie...took me a while to get her leash trained and calmed down enough to take with me.

I am also waiting for my new Asics running shoes to get here....then I will be tearing up the trail...lol

Please do not take offense. I mean 'skinny bitch' in the most venomous, jealous-female with body issues, way possible. It was an homage. :)

I just LOVE when you all bounce past me with your happy little f*&%ing ponytails swinging away, looking almost as if the trail is lovingly tossing you in the air while I suck wind like it contains last molecule of oxygen in the atmosphere with my feet barely leaving the ground.

*grin*

Seriously though, I am sorry to hear about your arches. I have had many runner friends have to give up the sport because regardless of fitness (and skinny bitchness ;) ) it was hard on their body. Me? I am built like a brick shithouse, so I am all good. My knees will complain sometimes, but predominately trail running and finding the right show has helped immensely with that.

That is awesome! Funny, cause today after work, I was going to start C25K again myself. I did that program a year ago, and was running 3 miles regularly, but stopped and lost my stamina. I also am on WW Lost 60 lbs, but gained 16 back. I have set a goal of losing 20 lbs before January 1st. I know jogging will definitely help me reach that goal!!

Thanks for the post. I look forward to checking in!

Hey Thinker good for you!!! I run all the time. Believe it or not you will become addicted. Not in a bad way, just that a day will come when you find yourself longing to run if you don't get to. Or you will be driving down a road thinking, hey this would be a great road to run on. I played basketball , softball. We would always have to run a mile before basketball practice, I would always be the fastest runner on my team. But I never enjoyed running, although I was always real fast, as far as distance running . I didn't like running it seemed painful and boring. But then I joined the Marine Corps and well you run ALOT in the Marine Corps. Not just running with sneakers on either. Running in full combat gear, with boots a pack and a rifle. Hills and sand and mud . So running with sneakers on a paved surface seemed real easy to me after that. HAHA Anyway I run to stay in shape. I know if it's too cold I dread it, so I don't run in the winter. But I run about 2-5 miles tues-sat. and sometimes on Sunday depends on how I feel. I run early in the am before the sun comes up. I'm not running for speed just pleasure. It's how I meditate. I get alot of thinking done then. But the reason I wrote this is to tell you, running is mind over matter. I have helped hundreds of people lose weight and get into shape. Most of them like you never ran before ever. Housewives and teens all age ranges and body types. Running is more in the mind than the body. If you can walk 5 miles you can run 5 miles. I mean run without stopping. If you can walk 2 miles you can run 2 miles with out stopping. It's all in your mind. You have the ability , you just don't think you can or should whatever the reason. In fact most people can run a marathon right now if they wanted to, they just don't think they can. I mean physically they could do it with no adverse effects like stroke , heart attach , slipped discs, etc... Sore muscles yes , pain yes , but they could if they pushed themselves. They just talk themselves out of it. They let their body tell their mind what to do. It should be the other way around. Let your mind tell your body .Talk to yourself, seriously, it works wonders and it will change the way you operate when you run. Say things like, don't stop, don't quit, so what if it hurts, it should hurt. Tell yourself, you're out of shape because you've taken the easy way out for so long. Tell yourself motivating things. Like I'm going to run 2 miles without stopping no matter what. No walking allowed. No whimps allowed. Yesterday I was soft and I've been soft for too long ,no more taking it easy on myself. When you run the 2 miles without stopping and you cross the finish line, don't stop and bend over gasping for air, instead, sprint as fast as you can for as long as you can, then stop running. Then tell yourself, I did that just in case you thought 2 miles was too much for you, in case you thought you were tired , I wanted to show you , you weren't tired, you're just faking it. You are sort of your own personal hard core trainer. Try it, let me know how it works out for you.

This is a shaping up to be a great thread!

I'm going to take the advice and try to consciously slow down and not worry about my pace.

Thoughts on warming up and stretching, anyone?

There seem to be conflicting beliefs on the effectiveness of stretching before a run. I often have a lot of tightness in my calves and it can make my run painful.

I'm a big, big fan of stretching. I tore my right hamstring when I was in high school, and it bothers me even on long distance *drives*. Seriously. So I don't do anything active without a good 10-15 minute stretching session; I stretch everything with extra attention on my hamstrings and groin.

I've heard/read the recommendation that a light 5-minute jog is all you need.......or is recommended *before* stretching......but I just can't. I do the stretching before anything else and then again after I'm done and after my heart rate gets back to normal.

Interested to hear what others have to say about it.

We get crisp, cold air here in the winter; I'm a little worried about it being an obstacle for me.....hurting my sinuses. My wife and I talked about getting a face mask; I don't really care to wear such a thing, but I don't want excuses for not getting out there either.

Today was pretty challenging for me. I managed to do 38 minutes total and 27 minutes of jogging, but I felt fatigued from the get-go.......mainly in my quads. They felt weak and tired.

I did extra stretching after and plan to do more this evening. I hope to feel much more fresh in the morning.

I will walk down to the end of my block at a brisk pace and do my stretching there; no rhyme or reason, I just feel like if I get the blood circulating then stretch it will be better for me.

I have a horrible time stretching my hamstrings; they tend to feel tight in the midst of my run...so I stretch them really good before and after.

I also find that if I am scrunching my face up and concentrating on running; it is not enjoyable, so I always try to think of other things instead of my running...though one time I was watching my feet and a low tree branch snagged the hat and headphones right off my head! Scared the shit outta me!

Needless to say, I always watch for low branches now!

It is best to warm up first before you stretch. Brisk walking, like Just G said, is an excellent way to warm up your muscles and then stretch. Remember to not stretch too hard. It is feel tight, but not hurt. After the run it is important to stretch as well. Same rules apply with respect to how hard to stretch, but hold the stretch longer (40 seconds, which feels like for freaking ever, when you are tired and just want to go Starbucks and get a scone.... just sayin')

I will try to look for some stretch videos on You Tube of stretches that I like for hamstrings and in general and post the links.

In response to Saprkle's request for stretch recommendations. Here are a couple of videos of stretches I do.

After about a 0.2-0.25 mile brisk walk warm up, These stretches work well for me:

Then after the run I do a 0.25 mile cool down walk then, these types stretches (sometimes followed by core strength exercises, but more often followed by a trip to Starbuck's.)

3 min. walk
8 min. jog
4 min. walk

Totally different headspace from yesterday, and my quads felt MUCH better.

Oh I am glad to see I am not the only running/jogging addict here. I can't get enough. I started some time ago with it being something I hated and could only get through with some music in my ears but now I don't even need that. Now I find myself never wanting to stop and can go for a very long time. My running time is my solace. A place and time to clear my head and feel the air against my skin. It is really peaceful and healing for me. I not only get my adrenaline going but it takes away all my stress and leaves me feeling ready to conquer the world with ease.

Aww....time for a run I think LOL

Honestly not long. I am a pretty high strung person and stay very busy with my business so it was kind of a welcome outlet for me. I think about a month. Now you cant get me to stop. I recently got bold and started jogging in some shape up and now running. That is giving me the burn I miss.

I still hate it too, and I try to get "addicted". I was running 3 to 4 miles about 4x a week at about an 11 min mile. My body was in the best shape of my life, and it was all because of running. Then, I got bored and stopped. I went to other things, like joining a soccer team and kickboxing but running had the most benefits. I gained 16 lbs since I stopped running... so here I go again.

Running also intimidates me. I have this weird self-talk going on in my head telling me I can't do it, which is why I never got past 4 miles. It's a weird internal struggle and I am trying to work on that too.

I kind of know what you mean with the self talk. Here is how I got around it. I just let my mind go and start thinking about anything and everything but what I am doing. That worked for me and is how I became utterly addicted

Great thread! I started running back in Dec of last year .
It certainly has been a learning process.... My best week I had was a 30 mile week I'm averaging about 22 miles a week right now. Although I have slowed down some, on my running time. Due to injuries, feet , chin splints, mostly.
Some advice I have is get some great running shoes , I have been trying to find a great shoe , just got the Adidas climbacool running shoe. What a difference!!!!!!! They are lighter , more flexible and don't have that huge heel, that you find on most shoes. I don't think high heels work for running. I have been using Asics, they are a terrible running shoe, at least for me. I want to gradually break into the five finger shoe for running.

Remember to eat your bananas before a run! and Stretch stretch stretch !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My New shoes!

I agree the Adidas climbacool is an amazing shoe to run in and I learned the hard way as well that Asics are a horrid running shoe at least for me. Not enough support or flexibility if you are running.

The shoes I have found to be the best for my foot though and since I wear heels so frequently is the Brooks Adrenaline GTS they support my arches and real flex

Isn't that something?

I *love* my Asics and, as I mentioned, got a new pair just after I got started more seriously on this jogging thing.

Even while I'm jogging, I am *very* aware of how comfortable they are....especially on my heels.

So far, so good anyway...

I'm not a runner but a cyclist and I find these...

I have flat feet...very flat feet....like Barney Rubble kind of flat....and I have been wearing Asics every day, but am finding that they feel very hard when I run in them; it's like they have no cushioning whatsoever or something; I can't put my finger on it.

I am going to head to Gary Gribble's and have them fit me for the best running show for my Rubble feet. I just hope they don't cost a gazillion dollars!

great idea, G! the guys at my local running store will have you walk barefoot while they observe your stride and walking patterns, then they find the shoe that will work best for you. i am in desperate need of new sneakers but spent a small fortune on a pair of barefoot runners last year and need to save some cash for something different (they just aren't for me.)

i started running while going through my divorce as a way to cope with the incredible stress i was feeling. never thought i would fall in love with it the way i did. now i run occasionally but am dedicated to starting back on a regular basis here once the weather cools down a little bit.

i am the opposite of JAGG. i love to run when it's COLD out! starting off in layers that i can shed as i warm up. by the time i'm done i've usually stripped down to a sports bra and my running shorts and the cold air feels sooooo good on my body. running in the heat just makes me grouchy.

I've got 9 consecutive days under my belt (shootin' for 30) and 12 out of 13 total.

Today I did 33 minutes of jogging, but this time I did it in only two jog "sessions"......first one was 18 minutes and the second was 15 minutes (3-minute walk time in between).

I think in another couple of weeks, I might be able to do 25 consecutive minutes. When I can do 30........ :| .......well, I just might cry.

Yesterday I went on my route through the neighborhood, walking the dogs for the first time just around the block, then by the house to drop them in the yard, then I started in running one minute, walking one minute instead of doing the north/south and east/west rotation I was doing.

I found that I would be able to run longer than one minute, and would up it to 2 minutes, and even once at three minutes....trying to push myself a little bit harder than I have been doing. I was staying comfortable before. I saw a post on someone's page yesterday that said if you don't get out of your comfort zone once in a while, you will not be as successful when it comes to growing. I applied that to my running; as God knows I have pushed myself to well beyond anything comfortable in my every day life..lol

So, it felt great to push my usual limits. I am setting my goal at October 1st to be able to run my whole route one time with no walking in between. I go around the route twice and that equals 2 miles, so if I run a mile by October 1st, I will be very happy and will strive for another goal at that time.

One thing I am discovering is that the first 3-4 minutes SUCK for me. Once I get to about the 6-minute mark, it feels kind of easy.

I've been working on finding my rhythm so my heart rate stays between 110-120 bpm. Based on what I'm reading, that is the target for me for fat burning/weight loss.

I've had to slow it WAY down....about 2 clicks shy of jogging in place. :|

When it gets cold out, we'll be using the gym down the street; I imagine it will be *much* easier to maintain that on the treadmill (even though I have a mental block with machines for exercise).

So that's where I am right now....still figuring this stuff out for myself.

I started this on September 1; I have done 21 out of 22 days and 18 consecutive days of cardio. That's quite an accomplishment for me! :D

I think I may have turned some sort of joggers' corner. :|

This morning I was waiting for my wife and her mother to arrive, so it changed up my whole routine.

When they left the house, I was left thinking about getting my cardio in and wondering what amount of divine intervention it was going to take to get me going. My past would tell you that it doesn't take much of a change in my routine to get me to easily talk myself into skipping.

Out of the blue......seriously.......I felt eager to get out the door and start jogging. It was like some Jack LaLanne spirit took over my whole body.....and out the door I went actually *loving* the idea of getting a jog in.

That's so weird for me.

I hope it sticks.

I have stumbled upon a method to improve your speed and distance at the same time, with out any extra training. First you must begin your run in darkness am or pm as long as its dark. Then you should plan your route to include an unknown prime hiding spot for racoons. I tend to favor the ones with rabies or babies. When they come bounding out of nowhere and begin to chase you ,for what seems like 2 miles, (ok maybe it was 20 ft) not only will it cause you to sprint like Marion Jones, thus improving your run time, it will also motivate you to choose an alternate return route, lengthening your normal run distance. I look forward to sharing more tips in the future.

I've just started week 7 of 9 (C25k program).

I'm up to running 22minutes, with no walking intervals.

I "should" be at 25minutes (all 3 of my runs this week are 25min, no walk) but I'm not quite there yet.

22minutes is a challenge for me. But I'm just going to keep running and if I only increase to 23minutes this week I'll will be patient with myself.

I started on the treadmill last week; I was able to set and keep my pace, my breathing was easier and more consistent and I had less joint/muscle pain as I ran... but I can see how it could get boring. We've had a beautiful weekend so I took my runs outside this weekend.

I ran 25minutes yesterday!

I was so proud - I nearly cheered myself on the treadmill.

I've been trying for over a week to break 20-22minutes (I know it seems such a small increment, but my god its been a challenge).

I'm definitely finding it easier to extend my endurance on the treadmill.
My breathing is consistent and not as hard and I'm able to maintain my pace; both things I struggle with when I'm running on the bike path.

After finishing yesterday I thought "I can run" - for the first time since I started this program in August.

I was able to start running again after nearly 5 months of healing & rehabing.

I just signed up to run Disney in January, I figured that would be a good goal to get me back on track.

Welcome, Greco! :) Five miles is amazing, and I hope to be able to say the same some day!!

I set myself back on cardio when we went on vacation and then came back sick. :( I'm still on the mend from whatever-the-hell that bug was/is, but I am completely committed to gettin' back after it once the congestion clears!

Today I'm going to start up again with mild stretching and low numbers of pushups and situps.......just to get my body used to the activity again. I don't want to do too much for fear of some sort of relapse.

But, like I said, I still feel good and focused. *two thumbs up*

Doing something everyday is what I keep my mind, and body on.

Saturday afternoon I ran, not to exercise my body, but to run within
my love, and living memories of one of my Beloved sisters

running I have found to be a place, a quiet, and at times bittersweet
place to live my memories

while I'm not given to speaking about my personal life on these
so public forums tonight I have had to share my sadness, my fear
of loss

and while running I also celebrated my sister's life up to today

She is challenged by illness, but continues resilient as she has
been a power of example for us, her family.

So, I ran to stand tall, to stand by her, to stand in love for
her and all she is to us.

Running then this afternoon for me has been to expend my
fear, to find my courage to stand with my Beloved Sister
who has stood in strength through many challenges.

I don't know how far I ran this afternoon, it was more then
an hour a slow pace a pace of grace of feeling love full on

of running because I could for her for me for us.

Running can at times like these be a solace

a motion for finding courage when faced with fear

the motion of life of love and I am grateful

for running.

Hi Greco. Thank you for sharing. Many people think that running is a loners activity. Just as you have illustrated, it is not. It enables us to open up mental/emotional channels
and connect with our vulnerabilities. Running is a martyrs
sport, at least it is for me. I think you did a wonderful job of dictating sensually, how it is for you.

YB,

You said it well here. Running, no matter how slowly, has helped me survive, then thrive through my most difficult of feelings. And is my ride through my most joyful times, of creativity, accomplishment, and most importantly, Love.

I stayed up late last evening, and was out later then usual for my run this morning...it was cold, the Sun bright, and I breathed slowly, as I ran just as slowly through the cobwebs of my mind, and finally came to that quiet, warm place in the run. A place where everything, including myself, is in harmony, when the only thing that matters is what really matters, Love.

To you YB my friend, and new friends, have a great peace filled Sunday,

I had a 24 hr race this weekend, and it was so crappy I dropped down to just the marathon division. Hated it- it was a boring loop course.

I think I only have 5 half marathons, 4 full and 1 ultra left this year.

Do you mean a run all night race? Where your team is a car/ mini van what ever and you take turns running- sleeping- driving as long as someone is running the entire time?

I did one of these once (with total strangers) 48 hours of running between 6 people and the car was a ford torino station wagon. Did I spell torino correctly? It was weird at first, but the longer we got into the race, we *bonded* and running through the night was the best part. I think it was a two hundred mile race.

For those that do not have any idea what I am talking about, you do not actually sleep...you catch a nap here and there.....here is a link

Hi Runners,

On Wednesday, i accomplished another 5k practice run, SO proud of myself.
No stops, which i am so happy for, and we did it in 46 mins, along with 2 Bentley's (hills....BIG hills...) Normally the ones who are trained on hills do 10 Bentley's, however, i'm only training distance at this point and time and knowing i could successfully run 2 Bentley's made me a very, very happy girl.

It was a great run, and the best part was that the girl who manages the Running Room here, ran with me and gave me so many pointers and helped me with my form.. When i woke the next morning, i felt that *feel good* soreness, but nothing felt pulled or too sore.. In fact, i felt wonderful!

While i know i still have a long ways to go in training, i love feeling the accomplishment and progress.. Runner's high! AND, this week is the first time i could say with pride that i am a runner, finally feeling that confidence!

How are you all doing?

Thats awesome!!!

There is an event here in San Diego called Color me Rad that is an 5K on August 11. It is an awesome event an all of the proceeds benefit Deaf Community Services of San Diego. I am going to try to get my self ready in less that 2 weeks, but if I have to walk some, who cares. I am going regardless! :-)

I'm doing the Color Me Rad run here in the DFWTx area!

This is AWESOME!!!!.......

I've been off the running wagon for a few months....tried to do too much for my last 5k.... ran one of my better times..... but I burned myself out in the process........ Right now, I'm working on the nutrition part of things so I'll have "fuel in my tank" for my next 5k and mud run...... I'm set to do a half marathon in October so this will be interesting...

Anyone out there who might have something to say about the nutrition part of running..... feel free to share..... I'd welcome any suggestions....

Every sence I had my back worked on I have been doing more and more of the things I use to do and do them well. With the exception of jogging or running, this evening it was fairly cool hear because of the very cloudy day,so I was out in the front yard and out of the blue I desided to give it a go.I am impressed I managed to go as far as I did, about a block and a half, the jogged up and down my drive way that has a good slant to it so it will work your leggs. Now I can add some jogging and build up to runing,I am glad I shure missed doing that.

Oh no, it was just you, yourself, doing as much as you can in 24 hrs. Overnight you wear a headlamp so cars can see you and you can see the road. Google "24 Hour the Lake" in Massachusetts. I went with a couple of friends. You can set up your own aide station/canopy to eat/sleep. We shared a tent and took turns napping. Definitely will never do this race again. The roads we were on were actually cement sidewalks, which killed my knees. I was totally unprepared for the extreme humidity, I didn't get enough rest, I didn't hydrate enough. Lesson learned.

I actually prefer 12 hr timed races if I'm going to do a timed one, because I can still bang out a marathon distance and stop and rest if I need to if I am having a bad day. My favorite 12 hr race is the Mind the Ducks 12 hr in Rochester, NY in May. The RD is awesome.

Been kinda draggy for me lately with all this humidity... next race is Rock N Roll Providence 1/2 Marathon next Sunday... then I am off until September.

What's a 24 hour race? Was it a loop on a track?

Nice to meet you :-))

Nice to meet you too!! Sorry I didn't respond sooner. It was a 3.1 mile loop around a lake, with a little approx mile out and back that we did at the beginning to even out the miles, and you could choose to stop after you finished a marathon. 8 loops was a marathon, 10 was a 50K. Or you could go as much as you wanted for 12 hrs or 24 hrs.

I will never do an overnight race that starts at night and goes into the next night again. I consider one that starts in the morning and ends the next morning. I was totally zonked.

Morning Runners!

Went for my morning run this morning again, i am doing close to 4k here on the trails and main road of the resort..Fresh air, beautiful scenery, and a big 'ol smile, gosh the feeling of a run just sets me up for an awesome day all around!

When i arrived here in Oregon, i got super spoiled with some new running gear from my Daddy..It makes such a huge difference, having clothes on designed for running.. Got myself a new water bottle belt, too before travelling here. Having water on me definitely helps push me further, not sure how i did it so long without one, especially since i dehydrate so quickly without running even.

TexasCowboi, i completely get what you are saying as far as nutrition goes.. That is something i am just learning myself. On days when i am not so great to myself eatingwise, i feel like the energy is sucked right out of me. It definitely is important to have a healthy eating plan, lots of hydration and a lot of good rest. That is something i had a hard time adjusting to, the proper rest.

Ugh. At the Rock N Roll Providence Half Marathon last Sunday, I was on my way to PR, and then the course hit this sudden, steep, sharp downhill with a curve, and I felt this pain in my right knee I have never felt before. I had to walk down the hill, and then tried to run again afterwards in a flat section. I made it a while but the hurting came back around mile 10. I had to stop at two medical stations for biofreeze, ice and a quick massage just so I could walk through the last mile and a half. I've been stretching, rolling, etc. like a madman trying to get this better.

Terrified I did something. Seeing the doctor on Monday just to be sure. I am guessing IT band since I felt it in my hip later.

I so cannot get hurt. I am *supposed* to be doing a 18-20 mile long run tomorrow to get ready for next month's races. It may just be a slow shuffle.

Truly a great run this morning..
Nothing beats the sound of the feet hitting the pavement, early morning..
When all is quiet, heavy breaths and the feel of the fresh early morning air on my face..

Sometimes i tend to get hard on myself if i feel like i havent achieved the distance i achieved a previous day...But this week, i've learned to really stop doing that to myself. The fact i get up and run like i do is the best feeling in the world, considering where i was over a year ago - and everyday is an achievement of some kind.. Mostly, it's about the positive mind that comes from a run, no matter the length..It's about doing something for myself that feels great and preparing myself for some events to come, which will be such an accomplishment, i know this.

So, from now on, it's about patting myself on the back and being proud of me for what i accomplish each day, rather than being hard on myself, and enjoying every runner's high !

First double half marathons since February. Did the Maple Leaf 1/2 in VT on Saturday; passed someone I've always wanted to pass, even taking it easy.

Today was the Lake Auburn Half Marathon in Auburn, ME. Really liked it, I helped pace a guy in to his PR, and I scored my own PR as well. Wooo!!!

Finally recovering from lyme disease. Pre-race I had chicken w/ fries on Fri night and steak w/ mashed potatoes and fries on Sat night. I can't eat wheat or dairy anymore and I'm finding that non-traditional pre-race meals are working just fine.

Next Saturday-- Gulf Beach 1/2 in CT. Gonna try to bust the PR a little more.

I run simply because you cannot finish a triathlon without doing so! It's my least favorite of the three disciplines. I'm built like a linebacker,NOT a runner. I'm slow and all kinds of incorrect biomechanics but I can run a long ways and I never quit. Sometimes I take our youngest dog,Brando, with me on runs of 4 miles or less. He really enjoys it and it gives me a reason to drag my sorry butt out the door when I'd rather be riding my bike or swimming. Currently training for a half Ironman Tri that is my way of celebrating my 45th birthday in October. The run leg is a half marathon. I'm shooting for 2 hrs 45 min.

I give you such credit for being a tri person. I can't muster up the willpower, not even for a sprint tri. I never learned how to swim and I have phobias about having my head under water. You're awesome!

And all of you, runners, walkers, joggers, wagglers, Galloway runners, whatever it is, you're out there doing it. It doesn't matter how fast or slow you are. Just keep competing against yourself. Keep it up folks!

***thanks... next week is my 9 mile mark.

was supposed to do a 5k today, race mode. but cramps are holding me back. (sometimes exercise is not good for cramps)

my double workouts begin next year right before my 1st half marathon in the spring.

Never any shame in a rest day. Better to listen to the body. For some people exercise helps cramps; for others it makes them way worse.

Double rainbow greeted all of us this morning...running in grainy sand, warm water...distance? who knows?...1.5 hr easy exploring run...proably 7mi...didn't care about distance, just exploring this new place, new people, new running place.

New gym, warehouse type place, serious, and fun folks together working out...friendly folks, strange to feel strange about friendly people...will get used to it...can certainly use it...excellent etiquette for folks using the free, and weight machines...good feeling...what a terrific place...I've been guided to some kind of humane place...wonder how my runs, and work outs will change because of it? I sense it will be a good thing.

Enjoy your runs folks!

So yesterday was the New Hampshire Marathon. Hilly as hell, but a nice cloudy day, very little rain, pretty much perfect. I was doing great until around mile 16 and just felt myself starting to lose strength. The road had a really bad angle and my right foot killed the last 3 miles. This supposed to be my first double marathon weekend, but I got lost on the way to my hotel in Portland, and didn't get here until after 8 pm and hadn't even eaten dinner yet. Ugh. My plan was to just drop down to the half marathon, but I didn't even feel like doing that this morning. So I'm sitting in the hotel in Maine waiting for my friend who did the half so she can comes shower before we go.

Sitting in the hotel now I think I probably could have eeked out the half, but I am not going to second-guess myself or beat myself up for not doing it. I would have stayed overnight in NH anyway if I was just doing the one full there because I wouldn't trust myself to make the drive home safely being that tired. And it is actually downpouring here this morning so I would have been pretty miserable out there.

I have a couple more events this year but I need to put all my focus on my first Goofy challenge in January. I also need to get back on the wagon of healthy eating. I've been giving myself way too much permission to eat crap food as a reward for an event or for long miles.

How are you all doing? What's coming up for you? What are you working on?

the cool morning air, the exhilarating feeling..
the energy to take on the day with a positive mindset.

i have felt so out of shape when i stopped running & working out. i have a tendency to get hard on myself and stop doing the things i love, a self-punishment.. So now that i'm getting the workouts back in, i will be working this back into my program as well.

What do ya's do through the winter months for those of you who get snow?

I'm in no way a competitive runner, but it definitely wakes me up and starts the day off right if I can run for a mile or 2 in the morning. I've been keeping to that lately. The problem is staying motivated when it's freezing and dark on winter mornings. We've had an Indian Summer this year, but next week it may snow and I don't handle the cold well. I'll need to replace running with some indoor cardio activity at the Y. I can't stand freezing!

Sigh. I miss running so, so much. I was a regular runner in my early 20s until I let life just get in the way. Two years ago (after almost 30 years of not running) I started the Couch to 5K program (C25K) and went from barely making it through 5 minutes of exercise to half walking/half running a 5k just a month later. A week later I started having weird weakness in my leg and arm that a year later they finally diagnosed as two disks in my neck pushing way into my spinal cord - after three docs said that there was no choice except surgery, stat, I had a two-level discectomy and fusion last January. It's probably not at all smart for me to consider running again, but I wish with all I have that I could go back to it.

A friend who started the C25K program with me finally tired of running 5ks, just ran her first two half-marathons, and is going to train for a marathon in the spring.

Sigh.

Also, to anyone who would like to start jogging or running, look into the C25K program. I have several friends who went from very sedentary to now regularly running. There are very helpful apps that you can get for your iphone/smartphone or ipod touch that you can use to prompt you through it and record your accomplishment. I also suggest signing up over at DailyMile.com -- fantastic and supportive community there.

A few pointers for anyone just starting:
- Don't wait to get yourself some decent running shoes. Your worn-out walking shoes or your cute sassy lime-green chucks are going to hurt you.
- Wear wicking socks. Only wear 100% cotton socks if you really like blisters.
- Go for endurance, not speed. If you're doing the C25k program, it doesn't matter if your "running" speed is slower than most people's walking speed, or if your walking speed would let you cover a mile in 45 minutes. The important thing is to just do it at a pace that you can sustain for the 30 seconds or 2 minutes or 5 minutes or whatever time it is that you need to do it. You can work on speed after you push through the endurance.
- Don't overdo it. No, doing it every day is NOT going to be better than doing it three times a week. Your body is doing something really new, and your muscles and joints need to rest and repair in between times in order to build up the capacity to let you really do this.

Hey Joggers/Runners,

Its been 5 days since I last ran (sounds like confession, damnit), anyway , home getting over seafood, worried about my family in NY, overwork, saying yes to a new part of my life, has all left me with fever, sore throat, a cold to boot.

Enough of the whining...the beach that I found here, and became a 7mi friend to me continues closed due to H-Sandy...I walked up there yesterday, and yes, the ocean continues a bit still on the parking lot...I miss this beach, it was the first place I felt comfortable running when I got here. Changes, and more changes...still I'm grateful to have had the runs there that I did and know that they'll never be the same again.

Still, today at home, on computer, wanting and not being able to run this week has left me irritable, pissed, and otherwise crabby.

So, if you are running, jogging do some for me will ya.

Regards, Greco

With the colder weather, snowy roads, and darkness coming so early, I do hit the dreadmill a lot more than I want to in the winter. But the reality is that it is safer. I don't trust drivers here in bad weather/icy roads. We do have bike paths and trails but they are not very safe in bad weather or they are not maintained in the winter.

Or I just go do events in warm states... ha.

I'm gearing up bigtime for Goofy now. Yesterday was 9.5, today is 16-18. Today I have highs in the 40s (ugh) so part of me is really debating doing it on a treadmill at my gym-- not because of fear of the cold, but because my gym is very humid with no air conditioning, and would actually realistically be closer to the conditions in Florida in Jan. That's my other thing- I always need to be conscious of what the weather will be like where I race so the body is not shocked but sudden extreme temperature changes.

Well, my racing year is definitively over. I could have signed up for more events, but I'm tired, and it's a bad time of the year financially, so I'm done for the year. I was 40 race miles shy of 500. I really wanted it, but I've been hurting and injured for a lot of the year, and I don't want to hit a goal for the sake of a number and not have it be fun anymore.

Gearing up now for Disney-- 6 weeks to the Goofy Challenge in WDW in FL, and then I'm headed over to CA for the Tinkerbell Half in Disneyland the next weekend. I'm actually nervous as hell about Goofy. Disney World races are awesome, don't get me wrong, they are a lot of fun. What gets me is the pavement- most of the roads are cement or don't have asphalt, and we are very unused to that in New England. For many people it has a much greater impact on the joints and the knees. I try to get on sidewalks here because that is the closest. Hoping my friends will help carry me through.

In 2013 I want to focus on quality, not quantity. I want good miles. I want to set new PRs. I want to get faster and leaner. I think this year I am setting up a no-repeat rule to freshen things up; if I did the race in 2012, I don't do it in 2013. I don't have a lot planned right now; I'm booked for Goofy/Tinkerbell, then the Mercedes Birmingham Half in AL in Feb, then Shamrock Virginia Beach Half in VA in March (which is my favorite race of all time and an excellent one for all walkers and runners who want do to their first half or full), Kalamazoo Marathon in Michigan in May and the Cox Providence Half in RI in May.

Alright, I know a couple of you were into Disney/looking into the Disney races.

If you missed it-- they just announced today that they are adding a 10K (6.2 miles) to Disneyland Half Marathon weekend. They are adding it to the Saturday of the weekend, before the half marathon on Sunday, in addition to the 5K that already exists. From what I understand, logistically Disney will never be able to pull off a full marathon in CA because they just don't have the room. The FL races are entirely on their property while in CA they have to use city streets.

Just to drive all us runners nuts and make us want to go back out there, they've added this fun challenge:

Saturday, August 31 - Sunday, September 1, 2013

Start/Finish: Disneyland® Resort

If you think that a half marathon is just a walk in the park, put your endurance to the test and compete in the all-new Dumbo Double Dare! A 19.3-mile adventure held over two days, participants will run the Disneyland® 10K on Saturday, followed by the Disneyland® Half Marathon on Sunday. If you finish both races within the pacing requirements, you will be awarded the all-new Dumbo Double Dare medal in addition to your Half Marathon and 10K finisher medals.

Can't wait to see photos of this medal...

Ok, I have no idea what the temp was this morning, But it was cold and windy!

I love running on the beach that I found here so much that well run I did. I don't like caps, But I wore one. I don't like gloves either, But I wore them as well.

Running on the treadmill during the week is boring for me but its so dark out that well I run on the tread. So running on the beach...outdoors...in Mother Nature is a Must for me come the weekend.

The trick for me is, when running in the cold and wind, is to keep running! I don't stop until I get back to the car then stretch quickly and start the car and at warm...though I admit that while I'm running I am warm, its only when I stop at the car that the cold sets in quickly.

Have a great New Year of running Everyone!

Ugh. I am tapering for WDW Marathon weekend, which is two weeks away.

I have never been so under-prepared for any race in my whole life. Between my whole ax-to-the-foot incident, being sick as heck for 10 days, the weather, etc., my training has been horrible.

I got in 8 miles yesterday w/ friends and really, really wanted 16 today at the gym, just to feel better about myself. I don't know what it is, but I have heel pain now on both feet. I used my regular shoes/running socks. I'm thinking maybe my feet were not happy that I haven't been on a treadmill in two-three weeks because of being sick. I'm not sure.

I am really going to need the magic of Disney to get me through this.

Have you thought about trying a form of minimalistic/barefoot running? I started distance running about a year ago and my coach started me off in Vibrams. As a result, I don't heel strike, and land and rebound from my forefoot. I never have heel, foot pain, or shin splints.

Hey there... I have tried Vibrams and I just didn't like them. I wear Brooks GTS Adrenaline series. I've never experienced anything like this pain today. I am normally a center-foot striker anyway and I can either do full run, walk, or a Galloway method.

I'm coming off a bad year for me. 2011 was 45 half marathons. 2012 was just 23 and a handful of fulls. I am planning some major resting in 2013.

So while i have run 5k in distance, i haven't ran in an actual event.
On New Year's Eve i rang in the New Year running my very first actual 5k event, with a number and all.. It felt SO good, i was so proud of myself.
The conditions weren't the best since we were dumped with much snow days before, and so we weren't able to give it our all since we had to be safe as well.

But finishing, despite the slippery conditions, the intense cold & windchill and my making excuses for two days prior why i should *not* do it - i was SO proud of myself. And since i hadn't run since about September, because of starting school it was a wonderful accomplishment and to know i still can.

Great way to begin the New Year - it's been a super uphill climb since then!
Yesssssssssss! Also loving that the weather has been ridiculously mild here and our snow has been melting down so much that we see pavement.. Once the black ice is gone, my plan is to get outside running because the dreadmill makes me crazy. i love fresh air!

So, why do I run?! Well, I run not to be a grouch! Yes, you heard right...Greco is a grouch!

Went to work today after being ill (I'll spare you the details) for most of the week, and as I laid on my bed, under covers, watching the wind make hay with the trees my mind had visions of the beach. The beach and how running on icy sand felt in my thighs, ankles, and how delicious a hot shower always feel afterward.

But there I laid not having moved a muscle for three days, well except to head to the ER first time in my life folks, and trust me when I say that I intend not to make it a habit.

So, that's why I run. To feel alive with Mother Nature, a primal feeling for sure, and to continue staying as healthy as I am...Yes folks, I'm not lucky, I do work for it believe me and thankfully I've "met" some folks here who work for it too...I better get off now feel a bit grouchy at the moment...run on!

Hey everyone!

I have been working on my fitness and must say running and walking are by far the best. I try weights, but that's a whole other story.

I started with "The Couch to 5K" after my last rugby season recovery. I enjoy it. It starts gently and I must say two 5K races have been a lot fun! I am still slow, but I am running!

I love the cowbells too, the livestrong.com has a great gym workout routine for toning. Thought I'd share.

This year has been the least miles I've done in a long time. For the year I'm just at four half marathons. It's mostly been because of illness and injury. The plus side of this being my "off" year is that many events I would have gone to had unexpected horrific weather this year, from extreme cold to extreme heat to torrential downpours. Some events up here were even canceled because of heavy snow.

I hope to get in some good training miles for the rest of the summer without traveling all over the place for races. I've changed my shoes from Brooks to Hoka One. Hokas are made with a higher ground support and more padding, and are designed for people who like ultras/trail runs. I'm breaking them in tomorrow.
