:moonstars: I recently learned something new, for me, even though its been around since the 70's, better late then never, maybe its just my generation. I tried to find a thread on it through the search and came up empty handed...

Handkerchief code? Do you use it, think it works? If you care to share, what colors do you fly? I saw them for the first time at a bar in Washington DC and thought it was gang related at first, haha! So I decided to enlighten myself with Wikipedia...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handkerchief_code

Personally I need to get my hands on a purple and an argyle handkerchief. ^_^

I remember the hanky code. Even though it was primarily for the gay men, I occasionally liked to flag hunter green, back left pocket. It was fun.

Orange left Pocket nothing else to explain:)

As for matching there's lots of ways to flag if ones dressed up, tuck it in your boot, clip to your dress, wrist etc.

I had a question about that one!! ^_^ It looks like it only explains daddi-boi and mommy-boi/girl, but what about daddi-girl? Would I flag a hunter green in my right pocket? 'Cause hunter green doesnt seem like much of a "girl" color. :seeingstars:

...I like this boot tucking you speak of. ^_^ I've done the derby thing and wrapped it around my wrist, OH! and it was purple too.

I never have pockets. But if I did, I would flag pink and houndstooth...

to the right.

I probably have more choices, but those are the ones that relate to actual flags/hankies I own-appropriately.

I never really liked the assignment top--left, bottom--right. Since most people are right-handed, I'd think top on right, the "power hand," made more sense. But, I always think I can improve anything.

Would it confuse everyone if you put your own color choices in each pocket?

I believe in my total lack of knowledge other than vanilla, that would be a switch if you both top and bottom?

Yeah, like that. Taking turns is good. If that is your thing, of course.

(My colors shall remain anonymous).

Just don't make up colors. I once saw someone make up their own meaning for something and in reality, they were telling everyone that they were into potty play (to use a ladylike term).

You know. I have actually forgotten about this colored bandanna stuff:seeingstars: So, here I am at the gym most mornings with any colored bandanna
that is next in the pile, today was dark blue. The gym I go to isn't a golds or a Planet Fitness...it's a neighborhood no name, and I don't really notice anyone scoping out my double duty sweat band. @ 6:00a, there aren't alot of people there. Is the Handkerchief code well known outside our community?

Sometimes I think I do live underneath a rock.

Uhoh, I made for some confused people. I always wondered why I was asked some of the things I was while wearing particular bandanas.

I will keep my colors to myself except for one. :hk35:

I was just told by a friend hunter green with lace edging signifies a girl right pocket/ side.

Hard to say. The BDSM world uses flags sometimes but not all the time or at every club etc. I am aware of flags/hankies and notice them in the everyday world. But, outside of the appropriate setting, I would not take them to mean anything-especially if they are not "tucked."

I always thought the bandana thing was pointless and not much of stylish accessory to begin with. All you have to do is watch someone for a few minutes and you can see if they are with someone or not. If you aren't sure, go up and talk to them. I felt mostly players wore them so anybody and everybody would take notice. Cheesy. Cheap. Here I am somebody anybody come get me.. I want everyone to know I'm available because I'm that desprate is how I read those people. Big turn off.

First of all NOTHING about me is cheap, cheesy or available!! Flagging is a way to communicate in the crowd what it is I'm searching for, what I'm into and it's a way that allows me to cruise without having to speak if I choose not to. Also NOTHING about any particular hankie implies if you're coupled or not. It's pretty shitty for you to come in here throwing insinuations about how others choose to express themselves. So not cool

I have flags but don't wear them-my going out clothes are not really conducive to flagging. But, I imagine that this would be a great way to start a conversation with someone. There are literally dozens of topics within the topic.

I have not had much exposure to the strict leather community but flagging would easily show who is the top/bottom or dominant/submissive etc. This would be very helpful in a situation where one is not allowed to approach another.

JAGG - I'm a little confused about your take on this subject. Flagging is not about indicating if someone is single and/or available. Rather than some "pointless" fashion statement, flagging has a very rich, and very long, history within the GLBT community. To dismiss it as something only desperate players use is rude and disrespectful to those of us who do, and are neither.

Gayla - black, left for 25+ years with a rainbow of others thrown in depending on my mood and hunter green, right, when I'm feeling particularly powerful

bizzy bizzy bizzy

The hanky code or "flagging" was actually started in the 50's or 60's as a way for gay men to recognize one another in public. It began with a simple non descript handkerchief or often a tie, often dangled from a rear pocket. Those were dangerous times for gays and being flamboyant or "flaming" could get one beaten ( not in a good way) or worse.

Gay Leathermen took that and turned it into an entire "language". A simple ( well, simple before 82 colors came about) way to speak to what their sexual interests were. It became more defined and the left/ right became a part of it. Dangling key chains off the hip were also used in this way. Bottom is traditionally right, which goes back to days of a valet or squire whom would attend his Master from the right, hence his "right hand man".

Flagging is usually very much an evening/ event specific thing done in appropriate venues. I doubt many Leatherfolk are out there flagging at TGIF or Applebee's. It is a symbol used for folks cruising to cut to the chase. Yes, it is about cruising and not about being single, necessarily. Most folks who are not single or in poly or open relationships do not cruise. It's kind of common sense in that regard. Read: If yer not looking, don't flag or at least, if you DO flag, don't be offended if someone garners an interest. Afterall, "you" opened up the convo. And heaven forbid, if you are new and learning about flagging, don't assume when you are not in Leather/ BDSM space that because someone has a bandana in their pocket, they are flagging! Sometimes, a hanky is just a hanky.

Good reading, it is a part of gay history and always makes me smile to see folks interested in and honoring different traditions.

Thanks.

:moonstars: I think my one problem would be if it didn't match my outfit... or oh shit, I'm wearing a dress, I don't have pockets! lol The calamity!

Hankies can be worn around the wrist, in back pockets, attached to one's purse (as long as you keep your purse or bag on the same shoulder), one's shoewear (boots, especially), or attached using belt loops as some pants have loops but not pockets.

It's a great opportunity to be creative!l

Hankies don't have to be harsh cotton, either. Silk, satin, or a nice poly blend could work too.

My colors would NOT look good together so I'd have to pick and choose what I wanted to express at that moment.

I'm a wallflower. I'd never flag myself - it might invite someone to walk over and speak to me. LOL.

But I can say, I definitely see the value of having a system based on visual cues. Certainly helps cut down on some of the guess as far as potential compatibility goes.

All these subtle variations- I can't keep track!

I'll just stick to black on the right.

I know, right? Honestly back when I came out I only saw gay men doing this. Then later the basic colors- black, white- then we have all these other freaking colors. Maybe this is important to some people but its not to me. For one I don't wear hankies and two, I don't rack my brain trying to figure out which color or side means what. Trust me, when I walk into a room you know I'm alpha and if you're not sure about the rest then ask me.

LOL, my alpha vibe is pretty strong but, I am also a masochist. When I do the Hanky Code info for this event, I am going to only sport 4 flags. But, I am going to pick the ones MOST suited to me and ones from the "add-on" list. Can't make things too easy for everyone ;)

lol- yeah girl you'll flagging the rainbow flag with hankies! that's very cool BUT it kind of takes away from the cat and mouse game of kinky dating. Know what I mean? When there is chemistry it's almost instant. You feel the "vibe" and then you dance about seeing where you connect. I am never just one thing but many things and often this is based on so many factors and how I connect with someone else. The only thing that is always consistent is that I am dominant and controlling. The rest is all many sails in the wind.

I agree. But this is for an "All About Leather" night at my club. We are offering a few things such leather care advice, bootblacking how-to tips, and info about the Hanky Code. Members who attend have been asked to dress in their leather formal attire, if they have it. Plus, we are going to have a "surprise" presentation for someone who has recently earned their first piece of leather. The entire event is my responsiblity but the Hanky Code is what I am working with that night. So, I am flagging :)

I imagine this hankerchief code business could be rather interesting if some of the folk are colour blind ....

LOL, it does not even take color blind to make it funny! A lot of clubs are dark and some if those colors are pretty close to each other. One of my fave activities, blood play, has a color sooooo close to something I am not into that I will not even flag for blood play.

Not everyone is into kinky *dating* some of us like to go cruise, flag, no talky talky, go home or stay there and it's on....

It's not necessarily about some *romantic* connection or something that is going to last even for a day, it could be just that night, that half hour, or however it takes to get what you *want* and are looking for in that specific venue...

I believe that is one of the purposes of *flagging*, to let someone know how it's gonna roll without even having to waste time on *small talk*

It's not for everyone, not something everyone does, but for some of us it is what it is, ride the ride or don't waste mah time.....

Absolutely had to reactivate this thread after I spent so long reading to see what color everyone was claiming. I don't always flagg but I am right handed and my wallet and keys are ALWAYS on the left. When sporting a hankie the basic colors I fly should be obviouse Hunter Green left always...Black Left.....the rest depends on my mood and what I am looking for. Orange comes in handy always left. Then there are nights no hankie but hand cuffs left side belt loop.

It is Talladega weekend in Alabama and we have lots of RVs on the road right now. This weekend, I saw a RV that had cut off jeans displayed in the back windows. Both had a hanky tucked into the right, back pocket. One hanky was purple and the other was orange. Needless to say, I giggled when I saw them.
