View Full Version : Where did your screen name come from?????

The name change thread gave me this idea a few weeks back. We all have screen names and some of us just use our real names but may have used screen names in the past.
I thought it would be fun to have a place to explain why you picked the one(s) you did and if it is meaningful to you in someway.
I'll go first....
I was SouthernBelle for many years because, well i am southern. I used this name for around 10 years on yahoo and in yahoo chat rooms. When i found the dash site, a few years ago, that name was already taken. I was at a loss. My dad always called me his princess so i just picked that and combined it with belle because most people called me belle anyway and still do.
Ok....now your turn....
:)
Apocalipstic

Back when I picked Apocalipstic I wanted something powerful, explosive, shocking and funny.
I was playing around with "the Apocalypse" and Apocalipstic jumped in my head and I totally cracked up.
My wife and I owned a paint your own pottery studio. She loved to throw on her wheel and I loved to handbuild with clay. We came up with name of "claybabytwo" since it was two babes who loved to play in clay..so it stuck..recently I "changed" mine to just claybaby...since she is no longer here...it is just one babe playing in the clay...RIP Cathy!
Thanks for this thread, as I , too wonder what the significance is of people's screen names...Clay

I had a welch corgi mix years ago, she was like my daughter, went every where with me, from the shelter in Maui where I found her to Fresno where she passed at 15, and several states in between. Her name was Corkey, my best bud and my heart. It is my perpetual reminder of her and her spirit.

See?
These are already touching stories. Even if it is a just "fly by night" type of name, to me, it is still interesting.
Afterall, these names are who we are when we first meet people on here.
I just find it very informative and meaningful. Call me sappy lol.
Thank you to all who share!!!!!!!(f)
BullDog

Not too long before I found the Dash site I was helping some friends fix up a house they had just purchased. It had a lot of woodwork that was painted over that they wanted stripped off. There was one door that was being very stubborn. I tried everything- a heat gun, chemicals, etc. The paint was just not coming off. I wailed away at it for hours and hours. My friends told me to stop or take a break. I refused, lol. They said you are such a bulldog and started calling me that. When I found the Dash site I thought bulldog sounded like a good butch screen name. So I chose that and have been BullDog ever since. I do think it suits me. I may be just a little stubborn. :|
As to Bully, Hank and some others were the first to start calling me that on the Dash site. Quite a few people call me that, here online as well as in real life. My former roommates (butch femme couple) call me Bully and they haven't been on a bf site in years. Their whole family does as well and other people they have introduced me to.

It is perfect for you!!!!
PinkieLee
10-03-2011, 03:36 PM
My all time favorite movie was Grease. My screen name comes from the scene in the diner where Rizzo throws a strawberry milkshake in Kinicky's face and says, "from me to you PinkieLee".
When I joined the dash site in 2002... it was the first name that popped into my head!

My Owner renamed me after I turned 26 to Snow, I was allowed at that time to use the Lady hence The Lady Snow. Snowy, Snowie One, Snowball, Snowflake,Snowypuffarooos are all names friends or chosen family have and do call me.. DJ refers to me as bestest FBG in the world.. Heh

For years on a different site I was called katrinka82 (katrinka was a nickname given to me by my grandfather so I was honoring him). I moved sites and wanted a fresh start (not that i am a bad girl or anything, just growing up a bit). I am a college professor to hence the Prof part and a good friend of mine was always calling me a hottie (i don't always see it but I am trying)...

Tapu, May I ask; are you from NZ?
Mine is self explanitory; I'm New Zealander and have a quirky personality - I'm not poor enough to be crazy and not wealthy enough to be eccentric, lol! The number 1 because one of the websites I'm on a numeral has to be used in the username.

10-03-2011, 04:10 PM
Many years ago there floated around Usenet this "what is your porn name" meme, except they weren't called memes yet. The formula was your mother's maiden name + the street you grew up on. My mother's maiden name made me sound like an accountant rather than a porn star so I used my grandmother's instead. Hence I was Slater Bates. I started using that as a screen name for awhile and then shortened it.

My screen name when I first joined the dash site in 1999 (whatever the year the site opened? 1998?), was MTBNGirls (stands for mountain biking and girls), two things I like.
In 2005 I decided I wanted to change the name. I am not creative by any stretch of the imagination and all that kept coming to my mind was my friend calling me a dapper Butch. So, I decided to just go with that.

Sue plus a play on my last name. Suebee has been my nickname for years. I wish I had a more inventive story to tell, but at my age it's just as well I don't get too confused with people calling me different names. ;)
Arwen
10-03-2011, 04:30 PM
I dated a guy in high school who was in an Explorer troop. Explorers were (are?) the co-ed Boy Scout level.
The whole group had nicknames from Tolkien. He was Strider. I am fair skinned and dark hair. I became Arwen. My best friend at the time was blonde. She was Galadriel. Our other friends were Eowyn and Morwen. I also dated Treebeard from that group. Treebeard and I are still very good friends.
I've used Arwen as a camp nickname although that got changed to Sarge (long funny story).
I'm Arwen in Circle although that is not my full name but it is my Outer Court name.
I'm Arwen to those that know me socially.
The only ones that call me Stephanie are those who think it makes them closer to me or my family or work.
I've been called Arwen off and on beginning in 1976.
Yes, I've even read the Simarillion. LOL

InfiniteFemme --
Infinite, because Infinite is Infinite.
And Femme, because I am Femme.
I am happy to have removed both from my screen name -- Nothing is really infinite, unless you are giving gratitude, such as Infinite Gratitude or it could be, Infinite Love - but is that really a reality? Can one give Infinite Love? And if they are giving it, how long does it really last? See, what I mean?
Femme, because I do not like to broadcast that I am a Femme. I much prefer to keep people guessing.
Oh and BELLE - I don't have to EVER listen to you or follow your gosh dang southern rules.
Julie
Alright I'll spill the beans. Back when I started on the dash site in 1998 long before the hundred different web providers, and changes came along, I chose the name JAGG. Because I really liked the look of the XJ model Jaguar in the late 90's. So that's it nothing too profound. hahahaha Even though I don't care for them much anymore, I wouldn't change my name because that's what everyone knows me as, JAGG .
WolfyOne
10-03-2011, 04:43 PM
Many years ago, I belonged to MSN & Yahoo groups and was ButchieBandit on them.
That name was comprised from 2 cats I had at the time, Butch and Bandit
Since leaving those groups behind for real butch femme sites, I wanted a fresh start and a name that fit ME. I adore wolves and I was alone at the time. Although wovles usually run in packs, every now and then, you will find a lone wolf. Trying to find a name a few of my ex's would not recognize and try to follow me around (until I started writing poetry again), the thinking process began. That my Planeteers is how WolfyOne came to be. It sounded good, it seemed to fit and I've run with it for years now. I'll never change it for another.

Starbuck
10-03-2011, 05:01 PM
My screen name came from a character on the scifi show Battlestar Galactica, the one that ran from 2004-2009. In this one, Starbuck is played by a woman named Katee Sackhoff, and is a badass Marine who doesn't take shit from anyone, not to mention she is H.O.T.! I really got into the show but I truly watched it just to see her. Short, blond hair and butch to boot, mmmmmm. :awww:
Dreamer
10-03-2011, 05:06 PM
Okay so my name, I have always been a bit of a Dreamer so when I first came to the BF sites I chose the name Dreamweaver. That name was taken and I was in a hurry and so I made it DownUndeDreamer seeing I am an Aussie and all. I had the same nic when I came on here but after awhile decided it was to long to type everytime I logged on *I am a lazy bugga* and I figured by then everyone knew I was from Down Under and so I shortened it to just Dreamer. And the rest is history lol.
Tapu, May I ask; are you from NZ?
.
Afraid not. I was reading a Ngaio Marsh novel when I needed a screen name and Tapu popped into my head from that. I love her books, especially the ones set in NZ.
(yes, cinderella, i thought of the string, too)
Many years ago there floated around Usenet this "what is your porn name" meme, except they weren't called memes yet. The formula was your mother's maiden name + the street you grew up on. I started using that as a screen name for awhile and then shortened it.
That wouldn't work so well for those of us who grew up on, say, 7th street, but the meme I ran into was [given name = first pet's name] + [surname = mother's maiden name].
This turned out pretty well for me: Peppy Littleton!
Maybe we need a thread for this....

For years I worked for a cross country horse hauling company, most times I drove alone so one night I was on the cb and one of the other truckers ask if I had a co driver...I replyed, no I dont,so then she said you are quite the Lone Wolf.So for years I went by that and even to this day some folks still call me that. How I got the one I have now is I was trying to get loged on another web site but I wouldnt take anything I submitted so I just typed in my show horses hame..so lo and behold Rockinonahigh became my sn.I still like Lone Wolf better. My midle name is really Michael but hardly anyone uses it,they use Rockin,Rocky, Mike,Mickey,LW or +*%& wich I really dislike.Yes it dose get confuseing.

I wanted Anya but someone that I don't see on BFP anymore, already had taken it (rats!). Anya is my name on a multi-player game I play on my IPhone.
I didn't expect it to be taken, so instead of thinking about it for a while, like I should have, I added a second first name so I still could use Anya.
Georgia, after the king of zombie flicks- George A. Romero.
Aren't you glad you asked, lol!
Just call me Anya:)

When I taught in China, one of my students was named Zhang Guihong. Gui means "precious" or "expensive", "dear", and Hong is "red" (you might have heard of hong bao, those red envelopes given at Chinese New Year). GuiHong, who went by the English name of Holly, always told me her name meant "precious ruby". She and I became close friends, having long talks on buses and rooftops, and I have used her name for most of my internets ever since.
I named my daughter Holly, in her honor :).

Inuus is the Roman God Deity as the guardian of flocks and herds. I have chickens and have had other farm animals so I thought it was an appropriate name.
There is another association with the name Inuus which is an ancient Roman God who embodied copulation. Had no clue about that until I found out later.

My screen name is sort of a private joke...because I am one of those weird people that absolutely HATES to be late for anything! (seriously, I start to get twitchy if I am running late, I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late...perhaps a touch of OCD in there? lol). However, for all my promptness, it always seemed like I missed the boat when it came to the intangible important things in life. But, I'm thinking I might need to undergo a screen name change in the near future. :)

You are VERY special Tapu.
As for me, I dubbed myself GemmeFemme on the dash site for a couple of reasons. One, I'm femme. Easy enough to follow, right? Second, I'm a Gemini. For one reason or another most of the forms of Gemini and Femme put together were taken.
I played with it in my head and sang some horrible impromptu songs about it and let it go for a while.
Then I was writing a really bad poem one day and playing with alliteration and thus GemmeFemme was born.
I had NO idea how confusing it would be to others.
See, to me it's easy as pie. Gemme and Femme. Rhymes 'n everything.
Nope.
People would call me GimmeFemme, like that was very nice. I mean, I'm greedy but I don't advertise it that boldly. I heard Gemme as in gelding. Not attractive, people!
So, when I came here, I took the opportunity to drop the femme part. If you all hadn't figured it out by now, there was no hope for you. Thankfully, those who lured me here (Arwen!) and most of the rest of you have figured it out along the way that it's Gemme like gem or Gemmie like gem eeee.
Who woulda thunk it would be that hard?

Foxy because I have had a long love affair with red tail foxes since I was a wee one. I lived in the back country and tracked foxes to their dens all the time. I was always very careful never to touch them, but I did get close enough to know that dead gopher breath is like icky... I have been vixsin/red fox on line (cause vixen was taken :() for over 15 years.
Shaman because I have been practicing shamanism for over 20 years. I still consider myself an apprentice, but that was simply too much to type...

Mine's kinda boring. I've always been dixielady on most all the sites, since way back before I ever discovered any of the b-f sites. I come from a family of truckers. Southern truckers. Lil' dixie was my first CB handle. Then when I became a teenager it got changed to dixielady. (I also remember being super bummed that I had to use a call sign instead of a handle when I got my HAM radio operating license about 17 years ago. It was much easier to remember dixielady than KE4QVK...lol) It's just been something I've used for so long that I have a hard time remembering anything else. :seeingstars:
I'm also not quite sure why I don't drop the "lady" part since everybody just calls me dixie anyway...lol :D

Déjà vu.
Princess Potty Mouth wishes my screen name were different, but it is not.
I am a University of Miami fan, through thick and thin, hence UofMfan.
There, that should stop all the creative spellings of my name...not!

I'm pretty sure my screen name came from a tiny town in France......Remulac............

Mine here in the Planet is pretty boring too...I moved from FL to Arkansas, I am a Pisces, and yeah, of the Grrl persuasion. See? Bo-ring.
My screen name I have had for YEARS otherwise, is Gazelle, and it has a much more interesting story...
I used to be very involved in the Leather community. In searching for a screen name, I came up with Gazelle (lots of friends just shortened it to "Gaz"). I started out as a masochist/submissive.
I used to say a Gazelle was a sleek and fast animal, who often got chased... and if she was very VERY lucky, she would be DEVOURED!
So my real name is Ann. Talk about BORING! Hate hate hate that name. I almost kinda prefer Annie.
That's my story and I am sticking with it!

T for Texas is an old song originally recorded by Jimmie Rodgers and remade by a lot of singers. Among them, my favorite version of the song is by Lynyrd Skynyrd. It seemed good for me since I am a huge Skynyrd fan and live in Texas.

Tangle
10-03-2011, 10:53 PM
I originally chose 'tanglelips' for two reasons. 1: b/c I, in 1999, listened often to the Dave Matthews Band, and they had a line in a song which i thought was very sexy: "tangled tongues and lips." 2: Additionally, a wonderful fairytale book I read as a little girl called -The Golden Key- had a protagonist named Tangle, whose long hair wasn't brushed regularly enough. Well I have very long golden hair just like she, and it can get plenty tangled when I don't brush it very regularly. I always identified with her name.
I am well aware that my name makes me sound a little slutty and juvenile, and I considered making a new name when I registered here, but I felt a little weird, as though I would be ditching one identity/past for another, and I didn't want to feel like i'd be perceived as sneaky. I wish I'd ditched the 'lips' now though, and just gone with Tangle. *laugh*
Alas.

Its my Ranger radio call sign at Burning Man. I might put in for a change. Havent decided yet.
OK when I had found the dash site and was signing up I gave a lot of thought as to my screen name.. went through variations of my name yeah nope this was a new beginning for me ok next some nicknames in conjunction to what I do or my rank in the military yeah I am a cop and a medic nope STILL did not fit was to shy to let my Cowboi out to many years of hiding my self (but that is another story) then it hit me I love to write love the power of the word :sunglass: and the Bard of old even perhaps someday I will publish my ramblings not hat anyone would buy my poetry but hey>>:byebye:
perhaps I could call it Becoming Bard

My screen name came from a character on the scifi show Battlestar Galactica, the one that ran from 2004-2009. In this one, Starbuck is played by a woman named Katee Sackhoff, and is a badass Marine who doesn't take shit from anyone, not to mention she is H.O.T.! I really got into the show but I truly watched it just to see her. Short, blond hair and butch to boot, mmmmmm. :awww:
My other screen name on a couple of online games is Kara Thrace, which is the character Starbuck's given name. Starbuck was the name of the airplane she flew so all the crew called her Starbuck. BFP Starbuck and I share the love for that TV series as well as for Katee Sackoff!
Since I can't drop Georgia from my name, ( I asked) maybe I will change it to Kara Thrace...but I feel like an Anya.

Venus007
10-04-2011, 06:04 AM
I read a novel by Anais Nin called "Spy in the House of Love" and thus my screen name was born 007 for spy and Venus for love.
I believed that I never had trouble accepting myself as a woman. I always felt my sensibilities lay with women. However, there was a sort of disconnect when it came to identifying with society’s definition, as well as a sense of invisibility because I could never see myself reflected in other women. Then I found butch and that felt right. The masculine male thing was a bit of a struggle, because despite a real gender incongruence in my presentation in the eyes of others, I had never really felt like I was male. I looked it. At least there was always a good deal of gender confusion from the world in general regarding if I was male or female. But I never was confused. But I do find comfort in my masculinity, it fits like my old black t-shirt. But I am never comfortable with it. I hold it suspect and watch it like it was a cranky old dog prone to biting. In the spirit of this very tiresome way I have of looking at my masculinity I thought it would be great fun to give myself a feminine name this time around. Miss Tick is a very minor character in a couple of Terry Pratchett novels. I liked that it was a kind of oronym. So I decided to try it out.
I’m having such a hard time with it. When I see it beside my words I cringe. It’s beyond being uncomfortable with it. I pretty much hate it. But I’m going to keep it. At least until the fear and loathing of a too feminine name passes or it just gets too much to look at. I am pretty surprised at myself. I didn’t think it would be this hard. But it is. It's so hard that I sometimes feel detached from my own words once they are out there authored by this Miss Tick person. I wonder what that says about me. I think it needs a touch of masculine to make it more palatable. I keep telling myself that tick is kind of male. But really what the hell does that even mean? How can a word be male? I think I'm losing it. Maybe I should just give in and change it.

Random

Random is short for Randomnumbers
randomnumbers is a young cat in a book... He was named so because of the extremely changeable behavior that adolesent cats can have.
Random was my nickname in my twenties, because of my lighting train of though changes.... Lol.. Circular logic, linar logic... nope... Mine was A, B 7, %, Z... The result were the same as other people, just my process to get there was different....
I left the nickname behind and went back to my birth name when I left Atlanta... but used randomnumbers as my email.
I thought I left it behind... lol... I met and fell in love with a woman who hated my birthname... She called me Random....
Fast forward eight years later... we break up, I try to go back to my given name... (Hence the short lived Ms Cyn) but the problem is.. when I self talk, I name myself Random.. People call my Cyn or Cynthia, but I'm still Random..

:)
My S/N ~~~ Is simple.~~ I have been Intrigued by another and also Intriguing to someone.

Originally, when on the dash site, I used a name my older sister has used off and on (landsoftly)...it's a combination of our last name and softly. Then I switched to novelafemme...novela after my then favorite red wine minus an L. most recently I switched to CatalinaRose because I didn't like the sad/hurtful reminders that came along with novela. Catalina Rios is a feminist poet who wrote The Three Tongues, which is one of my all time favorite poems. Catalina is also a character in a novel I am reading for my Chicana Theories class.

Oo! That reminds me of a children's book about a cat. He's named Elemenopeo.
I think I'll use that if Tapu becomes too famous....
Greyson
10-04-2011, 02:35 PM
I have been using this as a screen name for about six years now. I signed up at the dash site under my original screen name, U2. I started coming onto the internet in 98/99. I started over at gag.com under the screen name U2.
I stayed there about a year. During this time I was so naieve. I finally realized I was being stalked by an unstable woman in cyberland and one day I just decided to change my name. (Besides most thought my U2 screen name was about the band, and it was not.)
The name Greyson came to my mind. This was before the young man who sings became an internet sensation and I guess now somewhat of a celebrity. A few years before him. I like my screen name so much, I had it changed to my middle name legally and have started to use it outside of the internet a few years back.
P.S. The subject of internet duplicity is up on another thread. I have always been troubled how some use multiple names on the internet. "Same game, different name." I like the way Linus handles it here. It is in the open, transparent and we all know that so and so is now _________.

Greyson definately suits you perfectly. I remember you are the one that taught me years ago, to keep my same name as i went to each BFP site. I'm glad i did.
I'm not saying i don't think people should change their names as they evolve, move to different times in their lives, ect...just that it's nice to know who you once called yourself. And i agree with Greyson, it's nice to know who people were and who they are now. Linus does a great job keeping us up to date.

my old screen name came from a job I had over 10 years ago. Me and a coworker used to refer to each other as Princess Pottymouth. We'd even draw pictures of each other wearing tiaras and saying horrible things. *shrug*

Well T is my niickname, even my dad calls me it. It is shortened from my given name and also from "lefty" given when I started sports. My favorite coach shortened it to T and I have been T since.
The country part came from working summer camp at Easter Seals in 1999. Everyone knew me as T and when Fri night came around for our dance/karaoke I was the only one with country cd's... so named tcountry then, that got shortened to TC for the rest of the year. lol
Still fits well. I am good ole midwestern country at heart always.

Scrappy L'il Southpaw
10-07-2011, 09:17 AM
It was my first time in a Women's Boxing Fitness class (huminahumina). I'm a very quiet person, low key person until I'm comfortable around you. Plus, people meet me and seem to think I'm some kind of soft, weak, pushover. Until they try to push me in a way I am not going to go.
This is a true boxing class, not aerobic choreographed kick boxing. We jumped rope, did all the drills on the mat, and punched bags before we climbed into the boxing ring. Then the instructor gave us punch patterns and called us into the center randomly one by one. She'd change it up sometimes when you got there and you just followed. After my first time in she was already calling me southpaw, which didn't bother me. It's true. I consistently had strong solid punches. But once, I threw a hook that had her shaking her hand, she started calling me Scrappy Little Southpaw (I was also one of the shorter women in the class). I LOVED it. I use Scrappy on my softball shirt as well.
I think it fits me well!

I'm not very creative when it comes to screen names. Cara is my given name. It's a family name and I adore it. I'm a seventh generation Cara. In Irish it means, "friend" and in Italian it means, "beloved." I've chosen to not capitalize my name because I identify as submissive. Sometimes I also get lazy and don't use capitols. Especially when I'm reading/typing from my phone.

CockyDude
10-16-2011, 05:44 PM
Cocky comes from confidence, strength, and vast understanding of that wonderful creature known as Her, Woman, Babygirl, Lover. She is to be protected, supported, led, taught, indulged and fulfilled to capacity. Her smiles, be them from pleasure or pain, are our responsibility. Not everyone can handle that; it takes a certain attitude, posture, dynamic. Those that don't possess those traits don't deserve that type of woman & she'd never be happy with less.

Mine came from the riot grrrl movement of the early 90s. I DJ'ed at the college radio station and we played a lot of the music. I am a quiet, shy and reserved person and my friends joked that I was the total opposite of all our friends and colleagues, plus I was straight edge, so they called me puregrrl and it stuck.

Mine is actually a wink at my given name, which means lady of royalty and begins with M. It's also a very unique name that many often struggle to pronounce. I once had a supervisor that couldn't pronounce it, so he nicknamed me Empress and it just stuck and evolved. leFemme because I am very much a lady and a girly-girl!

When I found this site, it had been years since I'd been to a bf site and decided to grow a bit. I'd dumped the pen name years ago but I'm still a writer, still a femme. And there you have it. :)

My original screenname for Yahoo is Zimmyglrl. A name, that I used when I joined the dash site in 2007 and one that I used when joined this site in 2009. I came up with the name, because I was a huge Marilyn Manson fan in the 1990's and the guitarist at the time was Zim Zum. When I went to the reunion this year, Medusa renamed me to Zimmeh, which was thought of in the middle of the night on Saturday after we all had been up for awhile. I guess it is from the TV show, South Park, when Cartman would yell, "Timmeh" and she changed the T to a Z. I no longer feel that Zimmyglrl is a good fit and I am actually enjoying it, so thank you Medusa!

I love this column and thread - what a great idea!!! Some I know remember the movie "LadyHawk" made in early 1980 w/Michelle Pfeiffer (gorgeous, hot) and Rutger Hauer (friggin gorgeous, too, and yes, hot) and a young Michael Broderick (who marries Sara Jessica Parker later in life) who is adorable as "Mouse"... anyway - the love that endured even after a terrible curse has been placed on them for eternity - never touching, only passing and love still finds a way. Always Together and Never Apart. So, there ya go. Now, you know where my screen name comes from the Rest of the Story!

Deirdre
12-09-2011, 12:08 PM
In 1689, I was caught stealing bunnies from an old woman who lived down the lane from our cottage. She was a crass and wicked thing, and true to her nature placed a curse on me for the next 100 years, that I should take the form of a rabbit every fortnight, promptly at 8.
The tender-hearted people of my village, having taken pity on me (for I only wanted to love the rabbit, and care for it as if it were my own child), affectionately called me 'Deirdre-Bunny'.
Well, the name stuck, and 323 years later it still suits me, though the actual curse has long since past.

A few years back I took a Human Sexuality class and we had to come up with original names for the professor's website that related to sex talk. I had just discovered the term stone as pertaining to who I had been for many years. I mean I knew who I was and what I wanted but didn't know there was a name for it... and well, I was ready to play... hence the 4play. But the 4play is a play on words and can also be foreplay which... ehem.. I also like!! It was also my name on b-f...

I was JD at the Dash site- nothing clever there, it's just what I go by in real life.... but when I tried to register as JD here, it wouldn't accept a name less than 3 letters.
I knew any modification to "JD" would prompt the question "are you the JD from the Dash site?" so I figured I'd cut to the chase and call myself The JD. My little plan backfired, however- it seems to make some people even more insistent about checking. Maybe I should have chosen The Same JD.

I probably wouldnt have been able to change my name legally had I still been living in IL or CA because on those 2 states, you have to take out an ad for a certain number of weeks and then go through the courts; but here in WA, it was $100 and a trip to the local courthouse (didnt even have to go downtown) with a form I filled out and signed. I was in and out in under an hour. :winky:

A woman who I met online, a Lakota woman, by the name of XOtzin, gave me this name. We had been friends for a while and she came through HELL and back in the short time I knew her. Part of her transformation, was becoming more directly involved in tribal matters and ceremonies. She began to dance and now teaches it! Anyway, in the course of the time we were close, she was preparing to go "up on the hill". Those who do so, in her tribe, take a ceremonial blanket with them. She asked me to make her one. I agreed, asking her how it should look. As was XOtzin, she said.. figure it out lol. SO, after doing some research, I crocheted her an afghan. On it, I placed medicine wheels, in colors of the four directions and an image kept coming into my head. I thought it was the sun and I crocheted what I saw in my head. In the end, it looked like a spider. I was kinda worried, because I had wanted it to look like the sun. I sent it to her and it got there JUST IN TIME for her to pick it up on her way to ceremony, which was in NM... she lives in CO. She did not open the package until she got there. When she did, she was amazed. It seems, unbeknownst to me, because she never indulged the information... that while she is of the Lakota tribe, she is of the Spider clan.
Yeah.
When she came home, she gave me a name. The original name she gave me, in Nuahtl, even she couldn't pronounce. So, she came up with a name that meant basically the same thing.
Yotl Yolqualli. Yotl, in Nuahtl, means essence of woman and Yolqualli means purity of heart.
I have used this name in some fasion, ever since.

I used to be a plus-size model...yes, I know...hard to believe, but I did JustMySize, Fashion Bug, etc back in the day. Well, I did this one particularly provocative photo shoot for a "clothing optional" magazine :| (whistling inncocently...who me? Not me! Im an angel...). This particular shoot involved me, in a round bath tub full of bubbles, with candles and a wine glass on the ledge, {I did have a cami on under the bubbles, but you couldn't tell it.} When we printed the pictures, I asked the two people standing there "Well, whatcha think?" One said "They are heavenly" and the other said "You look hot, Angel" but as they said it, it sounded like Heavenly Angel. Upon that, I added the southern twist to 'leah' and came up with HeavenLeahAngel and have been that name for almost 20 years!!!

Mopsie is a nickname I had in college. People think it had to do with the bunnies from the Peter Cottontail books but that's not true. It actually had to do with my "mop of hair" that was always slipping out of the barrettes or hair ties I put it in. Especially when I would be dancing at parties it would get a little bit wild and my friends would tease me about my mop of hair which turned into Mopsie.

I am definitely BullDog, lol. My bulldoggedness is my greatest weakness and my greatest strength. Despite the liabilities, I would much rather have it than not.

My name is Cheryl and I live in NYC.
Yup. Not much time for creativity.

Esme from Esme Weatherwax from Terry Pratchett's Discworld stories - bestowed upon me as a nickname (and used thereafter as an online alias by me) by a near 7ft rugby playing lad after seeing me lose my patience and verbally (textually?) tear an idiot to shreds that was simply being insulting to me in what was supposed to be a discussion on a serious matter. Said 7ft lad was thereafter always referred to as Detritus (another Discworld character - we were both in the Discworld chat group as well)
The rest is simply acknowledging that I am the daughter of my mother, in the style of name used by the Renunciates in Marion Zimmer-Bradley's Darkover tales.
Short for Lyteswitch ... a nick I created back in the early AOL days. I think I'm over due for a change!
Medusa

I can't believe I've never posted in this thread!
I've been "Medusa" in various online spaces since 1996 but my penchant for all things snakey-haired-goddess goes way, WAY back to my childhood.
I first watched "Clash of the Titans" (the really awesome campy one from 1981) when I was 5 years old and immediately was intrigued by this creepy snakewoman who was basically minding her own business off in this banged up temple when all these assholes came and murdered her because they needed her head.
I begged my step-dad for stories about Medusa and he set about reading stories to me from a huge stack of books that lived on my nightstand for a couple of years. He made stories up when we ran out of Greek tales and I combed encyclopedias and art journals for pictures of what she might have looked like.
In many of the stories, Medusa had been a virginal fair maiden and a priestess of Athena (and granddaughter of Gaea!) and had been devoted to a life of purity until Poseidon came along and she fell for him. She was cursed after getting down with Poseidon in Athena's temple and turned from a beautiul maiden into the snakewoman.
As a child, I identified with the idea that this woman had done nothing really wrong other than fall in love (my step-dad protected me from the sex stuff) and also how she lived by herself after being turned to a snake and all these warriors basically kept coming to try and kill her.
As a young adult, I identified more with "love turns you ugly" after having been through a couple of hellish breakups.
As a woman, I identify with the "death-stare" aka how I can look upon someone and turn them to stone. And this is more about personal power than anything (and that thing where I don't put up with people's shit).
But also? I identify with the idea that it isn't really love that turns us ugly, but rather other people's perceptions of how we live our lives. And that doesn't make us ugly, it just speaks to how other people draw pictures of us in their minds when they often don't know shit about us.
And I'm actually ok being misunderstood. I'm also ok keeping to myself in abandoned temples.
I've also learned that if I'm minding my own, slithering through my life and not bothering anyone else, anyone who comes for me because of what they think they can get from me better bring a fucking army.
And it's not even that I'm bitter or whatever, because I'm pretty happy and optimistic.
I still think of the figure of Medusa as a beautiful, fierce Goddess...just with little pet snakes who are wildly protective.
Besides?
