November is national novel writing month. Are you brave enough?
I am...I think. I've already got the planning under way and come Tuesday I shall write.

No Linus it's not "It Was A Dark and Stormy Night". Though like Snoopy I am occasionally a fan of my own work.

I am thinking of giving it a go this year. University Book Store in Seattle is also doing a contest where they will print and sell the best local nanowrimo submission, so that's a bit of an extra little carrot.

Tempting....I did this a few years ago and wrote a fantasy for big kid/tweens. It was a great experience (even though I keep vowing to finish editing, getting illustrations and publishing it).
I'd love to do it again, but November is going to be insane for me.
Hmmmmm.....decisions....
You're supposed to write an entire novel, of presumably "standard" length, in one month?

50,000 words (about 1500 per day). Ideally a fiction novel but it's open (there are different categories and it's left to individuals to decide what best suits their "writing").

Yeah, I think some of my students do this texting. They're channeling Kerouac of course. ;-)

I think I'm going to try this this year. I haven't attempted a novel-length work in 20 years after losing a manuscript 2/3rds of the day through. I have a science fiction espionage novel that's been rattling around in my head for the last couple of years that I think I'm finally ready to try to get on the page.
Cheers

Spontaneous prose at it's finest. I'm pretty certain the second part of Big Sur could of been done on twitter.

I did it about 3 years ago and gave it a half-ass attempt last year. I'm in this year!
Friend me over there! I'm "medusagoddess"
The only good writing is re-writing. --I forget who but someone I agree with, about this anyway.
Is all the planning and character development done beforehand--officially?
Is there then just one draft?
I could probably look all this up. But I want you guys to explain it to me, if you will. I always have follow-up questions, you know?

Nanowrimo leaves it up to you. I think that "officially", you are supposed to just write but I have seen several people talk about doing character sketches beforehand or laying out a storyline.
I'll be writing something that has been rattling around for a while.
You just get one draft and many folks treat it as their rough draft. The point is to get people to write!
Surprisingly, I have no follow-up questions.
Thanks, Medusagoddess. Mmm.

So is everyone ready for Tuesday. I've been doing a bunch of outlining and research. I find myself approaching this like my normal freeform writing. I actually am organized.

I got my Certificate for NaNo in 2007!

I broke the 50,000 words with Poetry/Prose, Short Stories and my
one and only Non-Fiction closed out the Novel.
That one was 26,000 words by itself.

It just so happened that was the year the Event that Spawned
'Send the Pain Below' occured. Anyway, my hands and mind are not
working together right now. I am doing a bit of writing for a new short
story series, and thank the stars for a couple of good folks in our
Community who Gifted me with the Red Dragon program
or posts like these and short stories...etc...would
not be happening right now.

Hope everyone is on their way. I spent a fair bit this morning knocking out a bit over 5k of words. I was on a roll. It's a bit fractured right now but I'm breaking down things a touch tinier.

I've written my synopsis and have ideas boiling over! I plan to sit down tonight just before bed with a good cup of tea and some headphones to bang out a couple thousand words.
Good luck, everyone!!

Good luck everyone who joined NaNoWriMo. It's a great exercise in writing discipline.
I've never done this officially, but I did write a trilogy last year between February and May. The first book in the trilogy will be published next year.
I write on my own schedule. When I'm working on a novel, it so consumes me so much nothing else matters. I'll be in that mode later this year because I have the third book in another trilogy that my publisher really wants to see and I haven't a clue what will happen in that one!
Happy Writing.

Okay well I'm down to a bit over 2k of words because in my over enthusiasm this morning I forgot to save stuff so I rewrote. But I think I like my rewrite better. Hope everyone is having fun.

Day 1 - 1659 words. It's clean so far and I wouldn't change a thing.
I started out this way the last couple of times with good, tight writing for the first couple of days. By day 15, it will be jangly and bockety like a shopping cart with a bad wheel but it's the motion that counts, right? :)

Got close to 3K words down. I think this will be good for me...with school and exams and everything else that gets in the way, I talk myself out of writing. This is good discipline for me to stick with it.

I did a little over 1000 words today and am pretty damn happy with it so far. I really need to be averaging about 1600 per day but the quality right now is good so Im satisfied.
Here's to zombie novels!

Remember the key is to write forward. Resist editing. You will have plenty of time to edit later. Going backwards slows you down. Deny that little evil editor in your head! Write, y'all, write!

Hope all is going well in the quest to write a novel. It's ten days in so in theory you should be at roughly 17k words. Good luck all and keep up the good work.
