It seems every year Christmas time gets closer and closer and the stores can't even wait for Halloween to be over before they are pulling out the Nativity sets and Christmas trees..
Our childhood friend Tom is almost forgotten.... How will you spend your Day of Thanks? Stop in here and speak up for Tom or just wish your fellow Planeteer a Happy Spanksgiving!!!

I have to do that midnight madness, too. Just in another state. My internal clock will be so screwed up. I am not looking forward to it or the hours I must work. There is no more fun in having a Black Friday event, if employees have to be there on the holiday night to prepare for it. My dessert will be a 5 hour energy shot when my eyes start to close.

Much to my relief, I will be at work, which means I will be saved from eating turkey.

Maybe later when I have more money, I'll make a turkey and stuffing.

Poor Tom lol, I will be cooking Thanksgiving this year for my family, I have gotten out of it the last couple of years but the kids want mom to do it sooooooo..
Our tradition is also to get up a 4am the next morning for "Black Friday" .. Yes my family is a little on the nutty side but boy do we have a great time! I really do look forward to them all coming to my house this year. :)

The year I rode past a truck with all the Toms in cages literally piled one on top of the other within the cages, I said no more Tom.
Last year though, I did have a free range, no hormone turkey.
This year, no meat for me (vegan diet).
On Thanksgiving I am going out with my partner's son and my mother to a buffet, where I will eat all of the sides. tantalizingfemme is away at her mom's since her mom is having surgery coming up.

Any plans?
Do you watch the Macy's Parade?
Do you wonder why poor Tom is pushed aside for Santa and all that is commercial fuckery?

Turkey day at my mom's house again for me and Bully. Me and mom cook and my kids and daughter in law come to eat. The day after is my BIRTHDAY so we will celebrate it on turkey day cause i gotta work on my bd. That's ok though cause i put up a sign in sheet at work, that announces my birthday and for everyone to sign up for what they will bring for food. Last time i looked it was getting quite full. Oh and at the bottom i said "Don't forget a present". No one knows i'm the one that started it. So, it's a good plan.

I love thanksgiving! First I shall soak TWO Mr Tom's overnight in a special brine of salt, OJ, fresh rosemary and garlic. I will then rub you both down with ghee and a nice herbal rub. I shall stuff you with cornbread and cranberries then place your legs in twine bondage for a slow basted baking.
Joining you will be some special smashed taters, Non-GMO corn on the cob or some other yummy veggies.
When we are done picking at your bones I shall boil you to make soup for xmas! Lucky you

I hated it too as a kid. Now I love it, but only one slice. Or may one and a half. Which really doesn't make sense to me, because I am really into it, but it grosses me out after a piece. Dunno.
I am psyched because my mom is willing to make her sweet potatoes, her homemade stuffing, and her homemade cherry pie! We are having it at TF's house. TF is going to make cornish game hens for her son and my mom (the mass production of turkeys really disturbs both of us), and she and I will have fish/shellfish. Of course, she will have side dishes too. Should be good!

We're heading to the land of crazy, oppression, racism and ROLL TIDE , aka ALABAMA.. My ma is already driving me crazy with the buying of the food. She's been looking at turkeys for 48 hours now and has told me she has a schedule she has to keep.
I'm not really sure what it is cause Zumba is closed for the holidays. Originally she and Dad wanted to take us all to the chow hall. I was like um no.
Light a candle I may have to sedate her.

I work every T'giving weekend..both Thurs and Fri are counted as holidays so that's BIG money vanna!! We're having a potluck...i'm taking my "world famous" stuffing...
PECAN-SAUSAGE STUFFNG
(AKA...stuffing that tastes so DAMN good, it’s gonna make ya jump up and slap your mama!!)
about 2 loaves of "cheap white bread"
2 rolls of bob evans SAGE sausage
1/2 c. of chopped onions
1/2 c. of chopped celery
5-6 cans of chicken broth
2 eggs, beaten
1 c. toasted pecans pieces
sage, salt, pepper to taste
toast all of the bread and then tear it up in to your biggest mixing bowl..(i have a HUGEEEE one especially for my stuffing).
in a little butter, begin to sautee the onions and celery..toss a pinch of salt and pepper on them..when the onions are translucent..dump them in with the toast cubes..throw the beaten eggs in at this time too..give'r a good stir..
partially fry the sausage...i do it almost 1/2 way..i fry it for about 3 minutes continually breaking the lump of sausage up in to small pieces..dump that into the toast..grease and all (HEY!!..who said this was low fat?)..add toasted pecans*
start with first can of broth..begin adding it to the mixture..mixing as you go...you want the consistancy to be pretty wet but not soggy..add your seasonings...salt, pepper and sage..i PERSONALLY like a LOT of sage!!...YUMMY!!..
*toasted pecans
heat stove to medium..put pecans in a single layer in the bottom of a non-stick frypan...*i toss a pinch of salt and sage on them*...in about 20-30 seconds..the nuts will begin to smoke...start stirring them and keep doing this for about another minute (trying to keep them in a single layer at all times)do NOT let them burn!!
dump them on a paper towel to cool until you are ready to add them to the stuffing.
i have used this stuffing to stuff the bird (FDA warnings be DAMNED!!) and what ever is left..i put in a greased dish..when baking in the dish..i cover it with foil for the first hour and then remove the foil for about 20-25 mins..

GULF BREEZE, Fla. (AP) — Investigators say a neighbor and his friend used a bow and arrow to shoot and kill a Panhandle family's pet turkey for their Thanksgiving dinner.
Sheriff's deputies arrested two Santa Rosa County teens — Joshua W. Anderson, 19, and Jacob H. Provo, 18, Pensacola News Journal said.
They told deputies they planned to eat the 30-pound turkey for Thanksgiving.
They're charged with armed burglary, armed trespassing, theft of livestock and animal cruelty.
Animal lovers Brian and Christa Caponi live on 6 acres in Gulf Breeze and have more than 50 dogs, cats, goats, chickens and other animals.
They told the Pensacola News Journal that Tom the turkey was special because he was so friendly.
In fact, Christa Caponi said Tom was more like a family dog than a turkey.

When I read this it angered me and made me feel sad for the family. Their pet was killed. But, then I thought...why does it count as animal cruelty if it is an animal that people kill and eat every day? Hundreds of thousands of turkeys (ok, more than that), are killed and being killed for the Holiday. Is it how a person defines the animal they own that determines the law? It wouldn't be animal cruelty if the Caponi's killed the turkey for their Thanksgiving Dinner.
The "theft of livestock" covers the whole, it wasn't their turkey that they killed, thing.
Just something to think about.

Perhaps it has to do with the manner that the turkey was killed. If the boys prolonged it or did something to cause additional pain and suffering to the bird than what it would take to shoot and kill it, then I can see that.

No, it wasn't sarcasm I'd read the story DUH and all in another thread and stopped to think maybe they were hungry. I've been hungry before so I went there. I'm pretty aware though that the reality could be is that they're douche bags. Not because they're from "floriduh" but because humans are are gross with one another we just can't help it.
If they killed the poor fella for fun, hold them accountable. I'm not sure of their intent, it's just hard for me grasp the harming of the innocent it pisses me off.

ANNNNND it begins. Mass produced, pump them up with antibiotics and growth hormones (so healthy for us humans!), and shove them into small cages piled on top of one another (both the birds inside the cages and the cages on top of each other, of course), driving down the open highway freezing in the freezing cold, on the way to their death.

Because of the serious food allergies my granddaughter has, my daughter searched far and wide for a turkey raised without antibiotics, not GMO-grain fed, not injected with that solution mass-producers use to artificially "plump" them and that the turkey was pasture-fed.

It looks good to me tho I doubt my son would think so.Over the last year I have nearly turned into a veggitarian(?) so with nearly all veggies on the table he ask if meat was in short supply,no I said i'm eating healthy so should you.Well that fell on deaf ears so now there is always meat cooked for him,I on the other hand have gone to small portiones to manage my diabetis even tho I would love to go back to the way I use to eat now and then, but it's like crack no way I can just have a little.

I've never liked (most) Thanksgiving foods: not the turkey, or the dressing, or the cranberry salad, or most certainly not any fruits embedded in Jello. (and what the hell is up with that gelatinous cranberry grossness that comes straight out of the can?? My relatives never even bothered to dice it up, so I could still see the can's rings molded on the gelatin…) I've always felt a little sad when the holidays roll around and everyone gets so excited about how much they're going to gorge themselves, while I'm planning a hunger strike.
Well, until dessert. I do an about-face on my anti-holiday foods position when it comes to pumpkin pie.
So imagine my giddiness at being invited to a small post-Thanksgiving gathering in which only two food items will be served: Potato latkes and pumpkin pie.
Finally! A Thanksgiving meal to be thankful for. :) Thank you, Hanne!!

There will be lots of gratitude floating around, none of which is related to pilgrims. No turkey for us this year, we will be having pork tenderloin, and lots of pie, since she eschews the traditional birthday cake, and wants cherry pie, and I want a pumpkin pie, as well.

On Thanksgiving, I will be gumming mashed potatoes, gumming turkey and fixin's, and gumming a fruitless fruit pie.
Oh, and did I mention this old-folks home makes octogenarians sign a pledge of no salt, no fat, no sugar in ANY food material?
And if said "food" needs a knife, forget it.
One would think living as long as some of these seniors, their dang food would taste a tad better.
On Thursday night, will any restaurant be open so I can have a "real" meal?
Cheers everyone!:wine:

the dilemma...
We both working on Thanksgiving and my daughter will be here. I'll be off Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Do we have lunch on Thanksgiving before work by just going out a la brunch buffet or getting a dinner catered or do I make a lil something? I really don't feel like cooking but If so it would be simple. Simple means possibly a ham, mash taters, green beans, corn, dinner rolls, pie. But still cooking and again not really wanting to.. lol Want to go out but think getting it already cooked or making a lil something cause my babe won't get to go out with us and want her to have some later. hmm..
