SweetUrbaneBoi,thank you for this thread.
There is a studio here that offers women's partnered dance and a monthly women's dance. Unfortunately I only see a couple of what I would consider B-F couples there. They're mostly feminist lesbians.
But there is such a wonderful exquisiteness to dance with a good lead butch who knows how to guide a femme around the room. I did experience that for the first time last month.....I absolutely loved it---waltz, salsa, two-step..

The feeling of being guided around the floor is so amazing, I love the feeling of a strong butch hand at the small of my back. It seems though that there are never enough opportunities to go out dancing.

I'm surprised AtLast has not been in here as she is a dancing fool.
The Bay Area has tons and tons of partner dancing (including lessons for free) opportunities.......everything from ballroom to jitterbug to tango to salsa to cheek/cheek slow dancing to pick a genre.
When ButchFemme Socials does our annual big dance (in May this year) we always have a variety of music that includes most of what I listed above plus house & hipho & country western. The local DJs consider us a HUGE challenge. Lucky for us DJ Luna loves spinning for us.

I would love to take ballroom dance classes with TF, but around here there are no lesbian classes (not surprisingly). I am not too sure that all of the women in a hetero class would want me to lead (and probably not too many of their husbands/boyfriends). Maybe they have some "couple only" classes around here where you don't have to switch partners, but I haven't heard of any.
Private classes would just be too costly.

I've seen this video before, it has the same effect on me every time...It makes me remember the feeling I had the first time I danced with a butch, and realized that I finally knew what all of Mom's smut books were beating around the bush about...Just yum!

We have a great mostly gbltq etc dominated ballroom dance school here. Straight folks go there too but it's pretty balanced. I'm just waiting for that butch who wants to take me there!

I, like others, would love to learn. Also like others, not much is offered around here. There's also the dilemma of finding someone to learn with....even if it's just a friend.
several years ago there was a class being taught in my community...it was held every friday and offered up something for those of us that do not enjoy the bar scene. I took this class so i could dance at my daughter's wedding, suffice it to say, i had no one to dance with at her wedding so the classes i think were more for me ...i learned a lot.
just dance :)

Needless to say, I LOVE dancing, couples dancing with a strong lead in particular. Once my life settles just a bit I'm going to start taking lessons even if I don't have a regular partner - Dancing has saved my life more than once and it still nourishes my soul in ways that nothing else can, even if I'm just dancing by myself.
There is a dance festival in NY every year that is very gay-friendly that I've wanted to go to for years. One of these days I'll make it there!

DWM. Which festival are you thinking of?
The one I've talked to you about before?
We have a large traditional dance community here and one of the cool parts of it is a lot of gender bending. Not necessarily about being attracted to the same sex, but that it's a place where the even some of the most traditional men bust out their skirts and dresses and dance with each other and the women dance with each other wearing whatever they want and taking turns leading how they please.
One of my closest friends and I were both partnered for years to soft butches who would not go dancing with us. We both loved the OFOS atmosphere at the traditional dances here, and would leave our partners at home and go dance with the men, snickering about it a lot, but having fun with the dancing part of it all. Too bad we never had any of the OFOS butches come to the dances but maybe someday there will be an infusion!

I'm so GLAD you said this, I tend to lead rather well in dance, I can follow but it's rare to find anyone who can dance salsa who can lead. Boy of beer takes great mental, vocal, and beat direction so we flow quite nice onna dance floor, if needed during a cumbia hy's secure enough to let me lead till he gets it.

Believe it or not there are allot of dance studios that teach same sex couples:
Locations: New York, Ohio, Mass, Many along the coast of California, Dallas, Chicago, Baltimore, DC, FL, CT, RI, PA, KS and many more.
some don't even require you to bring a partner*shrugs* seems its a growing thing here in the states...and more and more competitions are popping up every year.
of course for me it's just about dancing and having fun

I love love love to dance. I have always wanted to take lessons as well. I basically learned how to two-step and waltz at the local bars here and in TX. I wonder if at one of the reunions, they could have some dance lessons pre party or something like that. It would be fun for sure. Plenty of Butches and femmes around there to have a partner or two.

Oh, I miss dancing with a partner!!
When I lived in Texas there were all sorts of places to go to dance. Now here in lower Alabama, not so much. Wish we could find a place that the Brutal One could go learn, but they don't welcome his 'type.' LOL!!!!
I'm also one that tends to forget and try and lead. Drives people crazy:-)

Now if there were only lessons that could teach single butches and femmes not to be too shy to ask each other to dance. I was fine asking femmes to dance with me but didn't have the nerve to ask any butches to dance :| Lessons before the dance would make people feel less shy once they got to the actual dance, IMO

Sylvie and I discovered this summer that we have a LOT of fun dancing together. On our list of things to do is taking some dancing lessons. I would love to be a strong "swing dance" lead. She has incredible rhythm and moves, I dance with heart, rhythm and moves are questionable, heh.

SO excited that I found a local woman who is apparently as dance-obsessed as I am: Apparently she used to organize women's two-stepping lessons at a local gym but they stopped letting her use that room, so now that she's just had her basement remodeled she is starting to offer them there on Thursday evenings - for free - with plans to buy a portable dance floor if enough people come regularly. She's also found someone to come in two Saturdays in a row to teach some western Swing lessons.
Plus when I told her about my desire to organize an LGBT dance lesson weekend here, she said she'd like to talk to me about helping to make that happen.
I can't begin to tell you how happy this makes me! I have to tell you, if I was forced to choose, right now I'd choose dancing regularly with a good lead over dating. Fortunately, no one is forcing me to choose so I'm free to pursue both. ;)

Please allow me to sidetrack this thread for a moment with a bit of fretting and perhaps a touch of whining:
I haven't two-stepped (or danced regularly) in years, so when a friend needed to borrow my dancing boots years ago, I gave her mine and decided to let her keep them since I was never wearing them.
Now I start two-stepping again on Thursday and realized that I have nothing even remotely resembling good dancing shoes, no budget to buy some good dancing boots, and no place around here to buy some anyway (I have wide flat feet and it's almost impossible for me to buy shoes online without trying them on first).
Now I'm fretting about what to wear: Sneakers just don't cut it for two-stepping - too sticky. The shoes that I do have that would have the right sole wouldn't necessarily stay on well enough for dancing backwards and in heels. ;)
Whaaa whaaa whaaaaaaaaaaa. What to do, what to do...

Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?
Well, since nobody else replied as yet I can suggest just coating the heck out of the soles of your shoes with dance wax before stepping on the floor. I've had success with this method for at at least a dance or two when I've been someplace w/out my leather soled cowboy boots.... provided dance wax is available where you will be dancing (often scattered in the corner of the floor -- kinda looks like sawdust).
Good luck!

Is this a local friend you could borrow the shoes back from temporarily?
Do you have an in-between shoe that would work if waxed as suggested?

The lessons are in someone's basement so the chance of dance wax being available are slim.
Is this a local friend you could borrow the shoes back from temporarily?

Nah, friend is in Philadelphia and I'm pretty sure that the boots were eaten by a dog at some point.
My only leather-soled shoes that might actually stay on my feet are quite dressy, and not entirely broken in. I may have to find a way to go shoe shopping today - I don't really have the budget but if I recategorize this from "entertainment/fun" into the same budget category as "medical/therapy," I could possibly justify it - especially if instead of buying cowboy boots I buy some shoes that could do double-time as work shoes. That makes sense and is completely justified, right?!?
What I'm REALLY thankful for is knowing that some people will be reading this who GET that you sometimes just need the right dancing shoes, AND who will get that it's very rational to categorize dance expenses as therapy. :)

::ahem:: These should arrive by the end of the week. Brown. They're from a company that specializes in dance shoes - they make them, not just resell them - and they have wide widths in almost all of their styles. They're no boots but they're dance shoes that will do just fine with my jeans, thankyouverymuch.

I would say this depends on what I want out of it. Sometimes a good, hard sweaty and wild dance on the floor is exactly what I need but when I'm in a snuggling kind of mood, I'm with homoe, I love slow dancing close and tucking my face into my partner's neck. Sometimes our heartbeats align and beat together when that happens.

If I'm out with my friends then we're just grooving together and doing our thing.
Partnered dancing... oh I wish for a good slow dance partner leading me around!
I do some partner dancing around here, contra, swing, sometimes waltzing. But I never really have a dance partner I feel like I want to be that close to for stuff like swing and waltzing or any other slow close dance. There are a lot of big dances around here where you just partner swap all night but it's largely hetero and hetero or not, I'm not the kind of person who can/wants to dance like that with just anybody.
