*I have a happy recall memory-wise during the time Boy George was so popular. Wasn't he unique and ahead of his time? I remember feeling very proud of him, for being so daring to be different. And he was so well loved and accepted for that - especially by the young kids.
And there was some political content to their music, or better love and acceptance "awareness", etc...
**Plus their music had a good beat and you could dance to it! ;)

One of my favorite contemporary jazz singers is Dianne Reeves.
The first time I heard her was with Lou Rawls doing an incredible (better than Etta James IMHO)

My preference would always be to sit in a piano bar, or jazz club
or swing concert and listen to real jazz and jump for hours.
I've spent half my life collecting music and there are always favorites
that stand out.
One of the best, most sultry compositions that came out
in the 1930s was Harlem Nocturne which was
adopted by an incredible trumpet player named Randy Brooks
who made it his theme song. Brooks also made a name
for his band with big recordings like Tenderly and Man with A Horn.
Sadly, his career was cut short by his death in a fire.
I couldn't find Brooks' version of Harlem Nocturne, but
I did find the next best recording by a great neo-swing/jump band,
The Johnny Nocturne Band, and one of my favorite bands today.
Enjoy.

Tonight is remembering the legendary Glenn Miller.
His music takes up quite a bit of space in my collection, not only because of the famous "Miller sound,"
but because of the incomperable arrangements by Miller during his leadership of the 50-piece Army Air Force Band.
I believe that, had he lived, he would have gone on to be one of the greatest arrangers of our time. Prior to 1941,
the Miller sound had already made its mark in films such as Sun Valley Serenade, Tuxedo Junction and The Broadcast of 1936.
Miller's arrangements for the AAF Band, all created and performed to boost morale on the home front,
including Stormy Weather, Perfidia, Poinciana, Juke Box Saturday Night, and
8-minute version of My Buddy, and Anvil Chorus are unsurpassed. Glenn broadcasted to American
troops underground during the Wiermact Hour and pressed recordings on 12" V-Discs to support morale prior to his disappearance in 1941.
I would like to offer Miller civilian recordings of In the Mood and his AAF recording of Moonlight Serenade.
Something to note is that In the Mood was first attempted by Artie Shaw averaging about 10-12 minutes in length.
It was far too long for a 10" 78 rpm. Glenn rearranged and recorded In the Mood as the we know it today —
a vinyl pressing and one of the great swing dance numbers of all time.
So, here are In the Mood and the AAF version of Glenn Miller's theme song Moonlight Serenade.
Enjoy the great sound of Major Alton Glenn Miller..

This is my first year with Symphony Chorus. Possibly the last, due to funding and the economy.
Since late January, we've been working on our German pronunciation for Beethoven's 9th, "Ode to Joy". Fantastic choral director from a local university came in and worked with us. As a soprano who hasn't been under a director in a while, the vocal range and breathing control increased and improved. And to say that I would need for it to for this particular piece of music? A huge understatement. Also practiced at home, listening to several versions of it, flexing the soprano muscles.
We filed on to the stage. The symphony and our soloists also filed on and the energy began to build. The Maestro took a few moments of silence before beginning, to remember the miners recently killed in Montcoal.
Last night's final performance of this particular work, left me stunned and in tears. It was just ... so much... that beautiful and that wondrous and that uplifting. The instrumental voices combined with the orchestra - blended completely. Everyone was so passionate and consumed in giving everything to this performance. At the end we were all briefly stunned at the sheer magnitude of what had just happened.
The audience in the Clay Center, was stunned as well. But not for as long as we were and the applause was loud, appreciative and went on for a good while.
When we had finally filed off the stage and back into our prep area - I wasn't the only one who had to sit for a few and just enjoy cloud nine.
A few local chorus groups to include ours - will be getting together to do a Mozart sing along this summer. Can't wait!
This song was popular the summer I was **. Sigh, parks, kissing, friends, dances........ I heard this on the radio today, and it took me back.

It's been so progressive, his show. And history is in the making!!
ENJOY, this is worth watching... especially once he starts singing - and he is so ADORABLE and "pure". (Plus, Susan Boyle coming back later in life singing actually DID inspire him evidently.)

http://thedrinkingbirdblog.com/2008/04/11/songed-birds-crane-wife/
the story of the Crane Wife, from which the album is titled, is an old Japanese tale of a poor rural man who finds a wounded crane on his doorstep one day, takes it in and nurses it back to health. After releasing the crane, a woman appears at his home. They fall in love and are married. Because they are poor, the woman offers to weave clothes out of silk that they can sell, but only if he agrees never to watch her make them. They become wealthy and the man makes her weave more and more, not realizing that his wife is becoming sick. He peeks in one day to see what makes the silk so special, and discovers that a crane is at the loom, plucking her feathers and weaving them into the cloth. Seeing him, she flies away never to return.

Again, Just Like A Woman... I was so excited seeing Richie that I didn't catch the "snip" from the early clip I posted - during this - the second of the two songs. Anyway, this version is the very exact one that I have. I LOVE the rhythm and the piano accompaniment here (very pretty), and of course his guitar work, effortless as it is and as natural as the sun rising. (Oh, and the snares on the drums, on and on...)
Please, enjoy - not much for the visual with the video here. Well, it shows happiness. I had always only heard this song anyway, until I saw that old BBC video yesterday.
And when I hear this song I want to be "in love"! Oui!! All that comes with that... :heartbeat:

2. LaVerne Baker's who had hit recordings of "Jim Dandy" and "Tweedle Dee"
3. The legendary Ruth Brown who was also known for "Shake a Hand",
"Mama He Treats your Daughter Mean" and Chuck Willis' "Oh What a Dream."
Honestly, I prefer Patti Page's cover of "Oh What Dream" just because of the heavy jump brass arrangement.
Anyway, here they are—three great ladies of early R&B: Faye Adams, Ruth Brown and LaVerne Baker.
Enjoy classic R&B in the truest sense...

My absolute all time favorite combination of the guitar, stringed orchestra instruments and brass instruments. No matter how many times I see this video, my senses surge when I know the lights on the orchestra are about to come up and again when the brass instruments are highlighted. Damn I just love this video and this wonderful piece of musical bliss! This piece cannot be played too loud or too many times in a row!

NASHVILLE (AP) — Bobby Hebb, whose 1966 hit “Sunny” became a pop classic, died here on Tuesday. He was 72.
His death, at Centennial Medical Center, was announced by his family. No cause was given.
“Sunny” reached No. 2 on the Billboard pop chart. At the height of the song’s popularity, Mr. Hebb opened for the Beatles on their last United States tour.
“Sunny” was recorded by many other singers, including Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Dusty Springfield, Wilson Pickett, José Feliciano and Cher.
The song is an upbeat ode to a woman whose smile “really eased the pain” when the singer’s “life was filled with rain.” It features the catchy refrain “Sunny one so true, I love you.”
Mr. Hebb said in several interviews that he wrote it to lift his spirits when his brother was killed outside a Nashville nightclub in 1963, shortly after the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

And these girls are so sweet and fun looking! Wonder where they are right now? I hope in a very wonderful, loving, empowered space!!
YouTube - The Logical Song by Roger Hodgson (former Supertramp singer songwriter)
Breakfast In America (1979)
When I was young
It seemed that life was so wonderful
A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical
And all the birds in the trees
Well they'd be singing so happily
Oh joyfully, oh playfully watching me
But then they sent me away
To teach me how to be sensible
Logical, oh responsible, practical
And then they showed me a world
Where I could be so dependable
Oh clinical, oh intellectual, cynical
There are times when all the world's asleep
The questions run too deep
For such a simple man
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
Please tell me who I am
I say: Now watch what you say
Or they'll be calling you a radical
A liberal, oh fanatical, criminal
Oh won't you sign up your name
We'd like to feel you're acceptable,
respectable, oh presentable, a vegetable
whoa (tick tick tick yeah)
But at night when all the world's asleep
The questions run so deep
For such a simple man
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
But please tell me who I am, who I am, who I am, who I am
From the album Breakfast In America

You turned me on.
You lift me up

You lift me up.
Don't you ever stop,
I'm here with you.
Now, it's all or nothing
'cause you said you'll follow through.
You follow me and I, I, I follow you.
What you gonna do when it all cracks up?
What you gonna do when the love burns down?
What you gonna do when the flames go up?
Who is gonna come and turn the tide?
What's it gonna take to make a dream survive?
Who's got the touch to calm the storm inside?
Who's gonna save you
alive and kicking?
Stay until your love is
alive and kicking.
Stay until your love is,
until your love is alive.
Oh, you lift me up
to the crucial top so I can see.
Oh, you lead me on
till the feelings come and the lights that shine on.
But if that don't mean nothing,
like if someday, it should fall through,
You'd take me home
where the magic's from, and I'll be with you.
What you gonna do when it all cracks up?
What you gonna do when your love burns down?
What you gonna do when the flames go up?
Who is gonna come and turn the tide?
What's it gonna take to make a dream survive?
Who's got the touch to calm the storm inside?
Don't say goodbye, don't say goodbye.
In the final seconds, who's gonna save you?
Ooh oh,
oh oh,
alive and kicking.
Oh, stay until your love is, love is
alive and kicking.
Ooh oh,
oh oh,
alive and kicking.
Oh oh, stay until your love is, love is
alive and kicking.
Ooh, ooh oh oh.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh oh oh.
Ooh, oh oh oh oh.
Ooh oh oh.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh oh oh.
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh.

Lets put the day aside
Let peaceful thoughts arise
May your dreams be sweet tonight
With kisses on your cheek and wings upon your feet
Oh chase the moon across the sky, close your eyes
Say goodnight to the sky
And the fun, day is done
Say goodnight, sail away little one
I know heaven can feel youre not far away
Tomorrow brings another day
One more thing to say
Before you dream away
Let it be reality
For all not just for some
Miracles can show the world
A story filled with light
All the world is waiting for a miracle thats visible
But you can see it all through childrens eyes
My heart speaks out to say
Before I go away
Oh, bless the child asleep tonight
Let the people see
The children hold the key
The earth will turn, the sun will rise, in their eyes
Visualize a perfect place, perfect space in your mind
Visualize rainbows end, in golden skies
I know heaven can feel youre not far away
Let it be reality
For all not just for some
Miracles can show the world
A story filled with light
All the world is waiting for a miracle thats visible
But you can see it all through childrens eyes
Sing a song, a childrens song
And carry on the light
All the world is waiting for a miracle thats visible
But you can see it all through childrens eyes
Hear the song, the childrens song
Tomorrows golden light
All the world is waiting for a miracle thats visible
But you can see it all through childrens eyes

There's so much that we need to share
So send a smile and show you care
(Alright)
I'll give a little bit
I'll give a little bit of my life for you
So give a little bit
Oh give a little bit of your time to me
See the man with the lonely eyes
Oh take his hand, you'll be surprised
Oh take it
Oh oh
Come along
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
(LOVE!!)
(Yeah)
Give a little bit
Give a little bit of your love to me
I’ll give a little bit
I'll give a little bit of my life for you
Now's the time that we need to share
So find yourself, we're on our way back home
Oooh we're going home
Don't you need, don’t you need to feel at home?
Ah yeah, we gotta sing
(Woo)
Ooo yeah, gotta get a feelin’
Ooo yeah come along too
(Woo)
Yeah, come along too, hey
Come'a, come'a, come'a, come along
Take'a, take'a, take'a look yeah
Ooo yeah, come along too

Yeah, come along feel it
Say take a look
Come along too

*Bully it's Florence that has me razzed up! I'm feelin' her. She is unique and reminding me of Kate Bush (quite sensuous) from way back, but with a lower vocal range of course - which I love [her voice], combined with a few other female musical spirits of days gone by. I needed "different" - AGAIN. I appreciate different. And I needed to remember/recall - the familiar... to/for me.
And heck, we all need to "feel", eh?!;) I thank her for that!

The Winterland Ballroom, often simply referred to as Winterland, was an old ice skating rink and 5,400 seat music venue in San Francisco, California. Located at the corner of Post Street and Steiner Street, it was converted to exclusive use as a music venue in 1971, by rock promoter Bill Graham. Graham had on occasion previously rented the venue for larger concerts his Fillmore Auditorium could not properly accommodate starting with a 1966 double bill of Jefferson Airplane and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. After closing Fillmore West in 1971, he began holding regular weekend shows at Winterland.

I first heard it during the movie The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.
I watched that movie again, with my niece (who thinks her queer aunt is pretty darned "cool") just this past summer - and kept telling her this one song was coming up... that I wanted to find out what the name of it was to find it on the internet. It had opened a chakra when I first watched the movie so many years back. I had tried WAY BACK... to find, but with no success. And she then loved it too when it came on during movie. It is used here in the movie in such a special part of the story regarding deep personal inner turmoil, forgiving, memories and love... that first spark of a "recognition" in understanding. (lol. Even though we [all] don't get it all just like that, just that little opening... Mmmm.) :)
The next day from work my niece emailed me the song, she was so happy she found it for me. How sweet that was? I love her.
Here is "Seleh", by Lauryn Hill:

We were talking-about the space between us all
And the people-who hide themselves behind a wall of illusion
Never glimpse the truth-then it's far too late-when they pass away.
We were talking-about the love we all could share-when we find it
To try our best to hold it there-with our love
With our love-we could save the world-if they only knew.
Try to realise it's all within yourself
No-one else can make you change
And to see you're really only very small,
And life flows within you and without you.
We were talking-about the love that's gone so cold and the people,
Who gain the world and lose their soul-
They don't know-they can't see-are you one of them?
When you've seen beyond yourself-then you may find, peace of mind,
Is waiting there-
And the time will come when you see
we're all one, and life flows on within you and without you

sad eyes reaching to the door
Daylight loses to another evening
still he spares me words goodbye
sits alone beside me fighting his feelings
struggles to speak but in the end can only cry
Suddenly it's so hard to find
the sound of the words to speak his troubled mind
so I'm offering ease to him as if to be kind
There's a train every day
leading either way
there's a world you know
there's a way to go
I soon believe it's just as well
this is my opening farewell
A child's drawings left there on the table
and a woman's silk is lying on the floor
I would keep them here if I were able
to lock you safe behind it's open door
Suddenly it's so clear to me
that I'd ask you to see what you may never see
now my kind words find their way back to me
There's a train every day
leading either way
there's world you know
got a way to go
I soon believe it's just as well
this is my opening farewell
This is my opening farewell.

There's a world you're living in
No one else has your part
All God's children in the wind
Take it in and blow hard.
Look around it, have you found it
Walking down the avenue?
See what it brings,
could be good things
In the air for you.
We are leaving. We are gone.
Come with us to all alone.
Never worry. Never moan.
We will leave you all alone.
In the mountains, in the cities,
You can see the dream.
Look around you. Has it found you?
Is it what it seems?
There's a world you're living in
No one else has your part
All God's children in the wind
Take it in and blow hard.

Song For Guy
PrDHysMdu6U
Oh I'm on my way I know I am,
somewhere not so far from here
All I know is all I feel right now,
I feel the power growing in my hair
Sitting on my own not by myself,
everybody's here with me
I don't need to touch your face to know,
and I don't need to use my eyes to see
I keep on wondering if I sleep too long,
will I always wake up the same (or so)?
I keep on wondering if I sleep to long,
will I even wake up the same or something
Oh I'm on my way I know I am,
but times there were when I thought not
Bleeding half my soul in bad company,
I thank the moon I had the strength to stop
I'm not making love to anyone's wishes,
only for that light I see
'Cause when I'm dead and lowered low in my grave,
that's gonna be the only thing that's left of me
And if I make it to the waterside,
will I even find me a boat (or so)?
And I if I make it lo the waterside,
I'll be sure to write you note or something
Oh I'm on my way I know I am,
somewhere not so far from here
All I know is all I feel right now,
I feel the power growing in my hair
Oh life is like a maze of doors
and they all open from the side you're on
Just keep on pushing hard boy, try as you may
You're going to wind up where you started from
You're going to wind up where you started from

For a world so torn apart, and for those who were taken so suddenly, without goodbyes...
Sorry I never told you
All I wanted to say
And now it's too late to hold you
'Cause you've flown away
So far away
Never had I imagined
Living without your smile
Feeling and knowing you hear me
It keeps me alive
Alive
And I know you're shining down on me from Heaven
Like so many friends we've lost along the way
And I know eventually we'll be together one sweet day
Darling, I never showed you
Assumed you'd always be there
I took your presence for granted
But I always cared
And I miss the love we shared
And I know you're shining down on me from Heaven
Like so many friends we've lost along the way
And I know eventually we'll be together
One sweet day
Although the sun will never shine the same
I'll always look to a brighter day
Lord I know when I lay me down to sleep
You will always listen as I pray
And I know you're shining down on me from Heaven
Like so many friends we've lost along the way
And I know eventually we'll be together
One sweet day
And I know you're shining down on me from Heaven
Like so many friends we've lost along the way
And I know eventually we'll be together
One sweet day
Sorry I never told you
All I wanted to say

WHAT ALL FEMALE band is considered to be the FIRST really true mainstream "hard rock" band?
(Clue: One of these performers became well know to many of us as an out lesbian performing at the early Mich. Festivals.)
*And "Hi" to you if you happen to read this... :rrose:
I know this is a fairly old post, WILDCAT...but I love music trivia...wasn't that the Runaways?

This is a repost but I love musical arrangements by Henry Mancini. This one in particular, Lujon -- which means something along the lines of a very warm wind blowing. I never tire of hearing this song, I love it.

I learned how to play this song by David Gray on the piano… I listen to his songs a lot : had a friend who years ago burned his White Ladder album to a cd for my car, which also has a sampling of other songs from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. But this song is my absolute favorite.

Heard this today, which I absolutely love the Blues. Not sure I’m totally down with the lyrics, but I’m definitely appreciating the structure of the blues in this rapper’s song.
