This thread is about cleaning, everything from the toilets to laundry.
Discussions and tips are welcome.
Does anyone have a solution for hard water stains on toilets?

It only smokes if there is bleach in the water. (even a small amount.) From an earlier cleaning, the "pucks" you put in the tank, stuff like that.
I've used,
CLR : not bad.
Oxyclean : works pretty good.
LimeAway : works pretty good.
Good luck. I know it's a pain to get rid of.

oh wow only if it has bleach in it
oxyclean never worked for me when I tried it so I might try the works, clr and limeaway
haha i can borrow this from my parents house they have all 3 of them
Just a heads up, never mix cleaners (aka chemicals)... some things mixed create gases that will literally kill you (like bleach and ammonia create lethal chlorine gas).

Right, I never mix chemicals, I once did and about passed out when I was younger

Vinegar is my favorite thing to clean with, but I use a PH neutral cleaner on my wood floors to neutralize chemical reactions going on with the finish. I recycle/reuse all my scotch brites from work and attach them to my toilet cleaner for scrubbing. Laundry is not my least favorite task but I think all the products traditionally sold to us to use is ridiculous. I make my own detergent in a 5 gallon bucket and now use vinegar to soften them.

Hey Ryobi!! Great name!! Please don't take offense to my opinion here about the suggested products.
These products are not good for the environment or if you have a septic tank, aid in breaking down the inner workings of the machine. Most importantly they are bad for your health. Not only do they aggravate asthma and allergies, but they aid in weakening our immune systems over the years. Bad fir kids, elders and people who are chemcially sensitive. Why spend alot of money on something that only works pretty good? Still have to scrub just as hard but your doing it in a cloud of toxic vapors. To clean my toilets I use a cup of vinegar at nightime and let it sit. Next morning I add a tbls of baking soda for that abrasive texture and scrub away. Gloves please.
Great thread Not so average guy.
My favorite for cleaning, polishing, and stain removal is Barkeepers Friend. It comes in a shaker can, like "Comet," and I think it mostly contains borax. It does a great job cleaning stains out of the white, porcelain kitchen sink, removes hard water stains from the tub, and shines everything without scratching. I also buy Borax in a large box and use it as a laundry booster for odor removal.
My former mother-in-law taught me that if you put fresh lemon juice on stained whites and hang them out in the sun, the stain will disappear.
Also, a toxic brew of half bleach and half powdered dishwasher detergent mixed with very hot water will make any whites gleam.

We have super hard water here in Tucson, too...it makes keeping bathrooms clean a real challenge. :bath:
Baking soda works really well as does Comet. I try to make a paste out of both and (if possible) let it sit on the stains for a full 24 hours (well, the shower and sink at least). With the toilet I use a pumice stone. It's the only thing that works!
My least favorite chore is folding and putting away laundry. Dusting is a close number two but I think that living in the desert where EVERYTHING is dusty ALL THE TIME has only made that chore worse!
Mr. Clean has come out with a new product called "Magic Eraser"......it's for soap scum and I'm here to tell You that my glass shower door has never BEEN so clean! AND with very little effort, too! It also works on the soap scum on the tile, too......
Amazing product!

Timber has been an advocate of the toilet bowl cleaner Sno-Bol. We were talking with friends in Central Texas about it, and when we couldn't find it locally, we all chipped in and bought a case of 12 bottles of it. Shi swears you will have NO toilet bowl ring, when you use this product.
Timber's a master with making bathrooms sparkle. I'm so happy that shi's taken over that task, because my favorite products have always been spray-on tile cleaners with bleach, combined with Soft Scrub with bleach.
Timber also clued me in that Magic Eraser works great on fiberglass tubs, too. We've not had any real good luck with getting the hard water stains off the tile, but I haven't given up yet.

Laundry nazi here... so it works best in our home for me to handle it.. lol
Our relationship is fairly "non traditional", if there is such a thing. She works outside of the home and I am houseDaddy. The only "chore" I really hate is dusting. Most anything that irritates my allergies and asthma suck, however I up my meds or wear a mask if it is a really bad day.
I also have a "thing" about putting stuff away. Love to do the laundry/ dishes.. hate putting them away. I have no idea why, LOL.. somethings just are!
I know it's not great for the environment so I would only use it in dire situations and sparingly at that, but TSP once a year could help with the hardwater stains.
If you own your own house you could possibly install a water softener which would also help. We are looking into doing that as well as a super duper mondo water filtration system next spring.
Love the idea of a "cleaning" thread, coz I am a clean freak at times and it's fun to share it!
I actually LOVE doing laundry because I have a wonderful LG (did You know that stands for Life is Good?!?! :D ) washer and dryer.
I'm just telling Y'all....if You want a task to be easier, spend the money ~ if You can ~ to buy better tools. It sure has made a different...not just making the task easier, but my clothes are in better shape, too!:heartbeat:

Sno-Bol! I was just telling Candy that there was a toilet bowl cleaner that I loved using but I couldn't find it. It was Sno-Bol, and I loved it. Good to know it can be found. Nothing worked better. Just curious...what does Timber use on the tub and sink, besides Magic Eraser?

I got into it when I lived in Mohave Valley,AZ and our water came from a well. The water had such a high iron content that it turned everything brown. :soapbox: Damn it, Weatherboi! I'm pissed beyond repair! :D <--- See? You might be able to make up for it, if you tell us how you make your own laundry soap.
I agree with you. The OP asked for solutions for hard water stains. Where as I use vinegar myself, I don't believe it is a solution to the hard water stains. Getting Rid of them anyway. I use vinegar as a maintenance cleaner. And I use it for a lot of things, including heartburn. I understand some are sensitive to chemicals and try to be mindful of that. I, on the other hand, am sensitive to germs and other peoples funk. I cure that sensitivity with bleach every now and then.
Happy cleaning,
Ryan, who has never been offended by someone being environmentally friendly.

My favorite cleaner is my shark steamer. <~~Click link to see it. It is getting a good workout with our flood and ceiling collapse. It sanitizes stuff like you would not believe. It removes any grime caught in cracks and crevices. It's awesome. Spray a little CLR around any hard water stains and blast it with the steamer and they come right off. Works great in the bathroom, kitchen, the car, the floors, everything!

I love sno bol and have used it to clean iron exposed sinks and tubs, but you have to have a well ventilated room because it is a very strong acid, and not good to breathe. Except for one time (described below) it was always great in the toilet as well. I have a house in MI that I have never been able to sell, so it only gets used in the summer. The toilet rings are pretty bad when we arrive. One year daughter tried about 6 times to get the hard water ring out of the toilet. Everything else was gone by the second cleaning, but the ring remained. I put CLR in the bowl and let it sit for at least two hours. Then I just swirled a brush around in it. Voila, the hard water crap was gone. Then I told my daughter that all I had to do was scrub it a little with comet, that it came right out, and that she was a wimp. Not until a few weeks later, when we had to CLR the shower head did I admit to her that I had used CLR on the toilet, LOL
BUT!!!
Here is a simpler, funner and sexier way to keep hard water stains out of your tub. BUBBLE BATHS!!! Years ago I had such a high iron count in my water that Culligan said they could not even begin to handle it. I was using toilet cleaner every time I cleaned the tub, which was getting to my sinuses. Then I decided to use bubble bath because I was sick of looking at the rusty water while I bathed. After the bath - no iron stains. I still had to clean it with toilet cleaner about once a month or so, but the improvement was dramatic. As the tub was emptying, I just quickly rubbed down the inside of the tub with my wash cloth and had a clean tub for weeks at a time. Sharing the bath is even better. Make sure you get ph balanced bubble bath though, because the cheap stuff will tear your skin up after a while.

I'm going to give you another tip about cleaning, and that it to avoid as much of it as possible. How do you do this? ... with a very common, very old fashioned item called an apron.
I am a very sloppy eater. Lots of things fall from my fork to my bosom, where they inevitably stain my clothes. I almost always wear a bib apron (like bib overalls) when I eat - stain avoided. It help keep me unstained when doing dishes as well. They make great carriers as well. Are you cooking several potatoes or making a salad for dinner? Hold your apron up and drop what you need into it. They will get to the stove or table without falling out of your hands. Women used them in the "olden days" to bring wood in for the fireplace, or veggies in from the field.
Other uses.
See a liitle spot on your mirror? - rub it off with your apron.
See a spot you missed when dusting? touch it up using your apron.
Are your kid's or grand kid's toys all over the living room floor? Pick them up, throw them in your apron and dump them all on the kids' bed (or if your nicer and not mean like me, just dump them in the toy box.)
You can stay clean while working on your car, or cleaning the grill, put your nails in them, or one of my favorite uses for a work apron ... to stash your garage sale change and bills in the different pockets. There are very femme versions of the apron and there are very butch versions, including leather bib aprons and tool belt type aprons. They are cheap to buy or easy to make, and they last for years.

Keri

Timberwolf,
did the ACE hardware y'all ordered it from, was it from Houston or Dallas?
there's a method to my madness with Laundry [ my relatives often sit and gawk]....
some people blend, some people knit, some people cook...I enjoy laundry [strange but true].........Just dont expect Me to fold...
Vacuuming is another 'relaxer', I dont mind it because I don't hear it..I can vacuum to my hearts content when nobody's around, because of course the folks hear it and it's really bothersome apparantly...but then, the way I see it... I vacuum....or we breathe Dust-mites, dead skin and Husky fur....
I'll share the tasks of Dishwashing, if the dish soap meets my standards [picky picky picky Butch]
I wont touch the dish rags unless I 'sanitize'....in a bowl I'll place the 2 often used rags, decent amount of apple cider vinegar, white vinegar, lemon juice, water and into the microwave for 3 minutes on high...careful remove, ditch water in sink, rinse rags with dab of mr. clean , dishwash soap and done.

Well, we were in Giddings, and ordered through the local store there, but I've looked at locations that might be in your area, and there's a store at Hwy. 6 & Addicks Satsuma Rd. I'm going to insert links to the product, with it's product number, and for the store location. We just called the local store, and asked them if they had it. They didn't, but agreed to order the case for us. It's a little more expensive to buy it by the case of 12 bottles, but you'll know you've got enough for a good long time.
Here's the product description, with the product number:
Sno BolŪ Liquid Toilet Bowl Cleaner (13010) - 12 Pack
http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1432198
The cost is $39.48 for 12 bottles.
The store location that I mentioned is:
http://www.acehardware.com/mystore/storeDetail.jsp?store=05568&saddr=29.763,-95.363(%20)&daddr=29.852216,-95.645223(5230%20Highway%206%20N%20Houston,%20TX%2 077084 (http://www.acehardware.com/mystore/storeDetail.jsp?store=05568&saddr=29.763,-95.363%28%20%29&daddr=29.852216,-95.645223%285230%20Highway%206%20N%20Houston,%20TX %2077084))
Any time I've dealt with an Ace Hardware store, I've always had a wonderful experience.
Hope this helps!

I found out that once you use a bleach product on a porcelain toilet with hardwater stains, it only cleans the surface but causes the stains to get more into the porcelain itself.

ok so I am not a cleaning fanatic...matter of fact i despise the vacumn cleaner....but i must admit i bought a dyson pet one at the local goodwill (what a find) and do rather enjoy it cause it does not get all clogged up and break every 3 minutes...(how did i know my daughter had pantyhose under her bed till the vacumn sucked it up) or burn a belt.... (oh u mean those little tiny legos will do that?) having had 10 children and 4 hairy dogs and birds, and fish and some other 4 legged creatures in the house I may or may not have known about... allow me to say....the dyson is the first vacumn cleaner we have not had to take to the repair shop on a monthly basis.
I have also learned that a nice big plastic leaf rake is an indispensible household cleaning tool...when u have kids... Before I vacumn under anything like beds, sofa's i rake it..this also helped reduce vacumn repair bills and keeps the dyson out of the shop.
Ok now toilets....after the above I have also sort of gotten real good at plunging and unclogging and replacing toilets....and bathtub drains....
those porcelain toilets u know u get that water stain..easy solution go get some polident denture fizzies and toss a few in...(dentures are porcelain get the connection)
they also do well when the toilet is umm clogged with some form of something....i find 3 tabs 5 minutes and a little old fashioned cussing works
the best.
Those weaves (hair added to your head) when you have 4 Diva daughters living in the house with weaves can kill a drain....sink, shower, tub....beleive it or not...a weekly dose of polident tablets tossed down the drains keep those weave clogs from happening...(I really do not like liquid plumber or draino or other caustic chemicals)...this has saved me snaking the drains,,as well as plunging (my grandaughter said one day..oh zede u just live to fix the bathrooms dont u) and it has also helped prevent teaching my grandaughter any new cuss words.
I have also learned when getting ready to replace the toilet first thing i do is write a note that says "TAKE THE FOIL OFF THE DRAIN FIRST DUMMIE" and tape it securely to the floor by the toilet to be removed..that way when i take the toilet off and put aluminum foil on the drain hole...and then work on everything prior to putting on the new seal and putting the toilet together..when i go to place the new toilet on the drain hole i will remove the foil first before doing what i did 5 times in a row and installing the toilet...etc etc etc and doing the test flush and...having no success and then remembering the foil!...I know most people would think this comes under home repair but in my house.....when all the kids were little and cassette tapes, toy giraffees, hot wheel cars,a mouse (dont ask) ,,watches...and god knows what else was being tossed in the toilet..we replaced them rather frequently.
vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, orange/lemon peels are my favorite cleaning products and they are cheap..and if the kids/dogs were to get into them...they would barf their guts up real fast.
speaking of which,,,,i need to go plunge my five minutes are up!

I've found these little spray bottles of OxyClean that can be put in pockets, purses, desk drawers, etc. They may not make the spot go away immediately (sometimes it does), but when you run the clothing item through the wash, the spot's removed completely.
I spray it on, rub it in with the rough edge of the cap, and sometimes the spot disappears completely. When it doesn't go away, don't fret. It will go away in the wash cycle.
