I love the winter Olympics. There isn't much I don't watch..I think the Ice Skating is my favorite and I really do enjoy the curling. I get a bit bored with some of the cross country stuff but I admire those who compete.
Also, on an Olympic note--if people are coming through Seattle on their way to Vancouver please let us know. I'd be more than happy to assist B-F travelers in anyway I can.
AND we are expecting snow to start this weekend so let's hope for a very white and snowy Olympics!!
My favorite events:
~Ice skating (solo & couples)
~US Hockey
~Luge
~Downhill skiing
~Speed skating
~Snowboarding (with that wild red-headed guy)

I am so looking forward to watching the Winter Games. I thought they were being held in Singapore - am I wrong? I think it will be such wonderful time for the US Teams competing. I prefer the winter games over the summer games hands down.
Curling!!! It's spell binding . Talk about being on the edge of your seat , glued to the TV. HAHAHA

2010 winter games are in Vancouver, Canada up here in the beautiful PNW. The games start on Feb 12 I think.

I actually love watching those peeps with the broom sweeping away for that puck. Someday I'd like to try curling to see how challenging it really is. I think the biggest challenge for me at this age would be getting down to the knees for the puck release..!

I like the bobsled, the luge, downhill, giant slolem, and last but not least, I like ice skating....the couples only though...not so much the solos.
The solo skating is not near as much fun without the likes of Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan, and the good ol' days when clubbing a competitor with a stick started the festivities! :winky: I am soooooo just kidding...that woman was disturbed.
I am not much in to hockey...I find it boring.
Curling is "interesting" to say the least....it involves a broom, and I use one of those around my own house, so I don't find it spellbinding like the luge....I would love to got that fast on a sled, while laying down, in a body suit, wearing a helmet, and screaming the whole way!!!! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!:p

I obviously did not know that--TY
I was looking at the tickets---and schedules. I'd love to take in some of the events.
And G you are correct about Harding-Kerrigan, although we still get a lot of news about Harding up here in the PNW--she lives in Oregon and still has her crazy days!

I love all the stories of all the athletes, from all of the countries, not just the USA....some of them bring a tear to my eye. Like that new Visa commercial with Dan Jansen. Have you seen it? OMG, the first time I saw it, I got choked up.
I also love the fact that these are people that compete their whole lives for something that might just be a one time thing. A chance to win a medal for their country...not a multi million dollar paycheck so they can buy the biggest house on the block and 9 cars, but for the chance to be a hero to their counrty.
I am really looking forward to it all!

Speed Skating

Snowboarding

I love all of it. I love the ice skating less than I did in years past, when it was more about skating and less about jumping. The sport has gone seriously downhill since the days that I followed it voraciously. Still, it's okay.
I'm trying to clear out my Tivo so that I can watch as much as possible. If I tape and watch later, I can skip the commercials and the tear-jerker stories. Plus, since I'm working from home and have a TV in my office, I can watch all day.
I remember the last winter olympics, when Mister and I watched curling every night in bed before going to sleep - it was pretty much the only sport on that late at night. We really enjoyed it. No, seriously, we really enjoyed it.
It's going to be so different this time, since we are in the same time zone as the games. Though, I'm guessing that they'll shove all the times up to accommodate the east coast folks.

I'm sure I wont get to watch much of the Games even though Winter Olympics are my fav.

*Whatever they call that ski jump thing (I find myself leaning forward with them! Does anybody do that, too?)
*Ice skating (but I agree somewhat with MsD...though not totally or she'll get all smug and chit)
*Some snowboarding (because I like that wild redheaded boy)
*Speed~skating (I make the turns with 'em....and I like that Ohno, kid, just for his name...OH NO!!!! )
I do not get cross~country skiing with the rifle and whatever....do folks go hunting on skis?

Thanks for reminding me that there are a couple of things that I don't like about the O's. I don't like the murder practice sports. I'm guessing that folks do hunt on skis because folks gotta eat in the winter. Back before the invention of grocery stores, I'm guessing this is how they caught food. Now, it's just disturbing (don't anyone bother blasting me for not liking murder practice sports, I'm the only one in my family who's not an NRA member, so I've heard it all before).

The PNW has been having unseasonable warm temperatures. It could have an impact as they may have to make snow for some of the events. Not the best year for it to be warm up here.

I just saw the USA's uniform. It was designed by Ralph Lauren. It is a navy jacket with a red stripe on the arm, and pockets, and the pony/rider on the breast area; White Turtleneck Shirt and White Pants, and an alpine ski hat that has moose, flags, & evergreens all over it. The only thing I didn't catch is the shoes and gloves. I guess white snow boots or shoes of some sort. And navy gloves. It looks really sharp. It was on one of the sports channels.

I know! They said he was going about 90 mph before he hit. How devastating for his family, his team, the sport and the Olympics.
I wonder if there is a curse beginning because at the last Olympics, a civilian was killed, although it was not by an athlete. Methinks I'm a bit paranoid today. :|

The man who recited his poem about Canada...awesome!
I feel for the luger who was killed. I am surprised that the accident was shown in full. I cannot imagine being his mother, father, sibling, relative, or friend and seeing that in full. Horrible. Some things just should not be shown out of common curtesy. But that is just me.

I hate NBC..............hate them..........
Opening Ceremonies start at 730p my ass............I had to put up with an hour and a half of bullshit human interest blah blah blah before we got to see a taped version of the Opening Ceremonies. We are in the same time zone..........
I wish we could just get the events without all the commentary and stupid stories.........
I actually liked this Opening better than the Bejing opening............and guess what............as I am typing the taped version is still going on only now it's just the Olympic officials going blah blah blah........it's 1130p and the athletes and officials are really already in bed............
Why did they delay it for viewing on NBC for 3 hours? I'm in the same time zone for goodness sake! I also agree about too much commentary. Just let us watch it, NBC.
Aside from the mechanical malfunction, I thought the entire ceremony was amazing. I wanna go play with lights now! :D

Well, if you don't like NBC, you could watch Canada's feed from CTV: http://www.ctvolympics.ca/tv-online-listings/index.html
I was trying to see if the CBC had a feed but can't find it. IMO, it sucks that CTV has it as they don't plan for the audience level online but perhaps that's just me.

Why exclude women from Olympic ski jump? (http://maddowblog.msnbc.msn.com/_video/2010/02/12/3888904-why-exclude-women-from-olympic-ski-jump)
Female Ski Jumpers Frozen Out of Olympics (http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/35017294/ns/today-vancouver_2010_olympics#35320777)
(real answer? [imo] an American woman--Lindsay Van--has beat the men's record--on the same Whistler, BC ski jump that the men will be competing on in this Olympics--and that the women are being excluded from!)
Second Video:
Watch the paternalism and sexism of this male Canadian member (over 20 years) of the IOC who comments that if the women keep this up (their fight to be included in this sport), they just may have to wait even longer! Bad girls!
He also states that the Olympics don't include squash and rollerskating and those people are disappointed too! (umm...but those events don't exist for either gender!)
Oh, and the [Swiss] President of the International Ski Federation who thinks that jumping down so far and so frequently just doesn't seem "appropriate for ladies from a medical point of view" !!! (yep, the ol' uterus may fall out argument!)
p.s. There are 17 female members out of 108 on the IOC!

oh yeah...............Linus.........I watched CBC for the last O games........thanks for the CTV link............I will be using it......
So, a female Australian snowboarder brings in the flag for her country's team. Matt Lauer comments (paraphrase): "She'll be getting married this year...blah blah"
I don't know if anyone noticed last summer's Olympics, that with SO many female athletes, the commentators would mention something about their marital and/or motherhood status.

Toughy,
I'll have to look again about the KD footage. I was just so happy to hear her sing that beautiful Cohen song (in her spiffy suit!), that I didn't notice the camera shots.

I don't really care if they shoed KD up close or not, I just thought it was cool as shit she was even singing there.
I love all the stories that go with the olympics, the background and history, and what it all means, is one of my favorite things.
I didn't really care about the "live" thing, as I DVRed it so I could start it from the beginning when my friends all got to my house and we got the pizza ordered. The opening and effects were really neat. What I loved was seeing kd lang in a suit on natl/world tv. There was no mistaking there was a masculine looking female in a masculine suit up there singing. it speaks volumes for the skill of the olympians as well as the (almost) inhumanly high expectations of what they can do that a 'hill' of over 100 feet (that's the right number I think) is called the "Normal Hill"...and what do they do on this 'normal hill' ?.. they J-u-m-p off it and they fly though the air and land without a hitch...it's amazing...
yes, I know you all know all that already...it just seemed worth being redundant about...

oh yeah...............Linus.........I watched CBC for the last O games........thanks for the CTV link............I will be using it......
You all were robbed by NBC. Here in Canada, full version, close up, VERY close up shots of kd, it was amazing. It was on Youtube for a short time, but pulled to to copywrite infringement, at least that was their excuse. CTV or CBC will have really good coverage of stuff, and here, our cable company has video on demand with a special section just for Oympic stuff, maybe yours does too?

Unfortunately, not that I've seen and if it does exist, it's by NBC (they got the American rights compared to CTV getting the Canadian -- I still think CBC should have had it). Which means it will still suck as far as their ability to cover it.
As a Canadian, (I can't believe I'm saying this) I miss the CBC. I really wish I could get it (like BBC America) as a specialty channel even. I know I can get it podcast but it's just not the same, eh?
Is it me, or are most of the female members of the US Ski team hot, if not crazy cute? And that snowboarder with the long blonde curly hair? OMG...she's hot.
And just an observation on Canadian TV vs. what Americans get. Back in the 1990s, I lived in a city that had CBC and CTV on the cable system. The coverage of the Olympics, and, strangely, American politics, was way better. I grew up watching Canadian TV (pre-cable, 90 minutes from a northern border). We got 2 Canadian stations and 3 US stations on our TV -- this was before cable TV existed.
There must have been some issue between US cable TV systems and the Canadian government about 10 years ago because that's when the Canadian stations started to disappear from US cable TV systems, at least here in Michigan. You can get a couple of good Canadian series on DVD to watch -- DaVinci's Inquest (sort of a pre-cursor to our CSI shows) and the Newsroom (which is a pre-cursor to The Office) and Kids in the Hall (sketch comedy). There's a few others. One show I really miss that you can't seem to find on DVD anywhere is This Hour Has 22 Minutes. That show is great fun.
Jake...who has a slight Canadian inflection, probably from all the Canadian TV he watched as a kid

I thought it was my imagination! That was actually the only part of the opening that I had an issue with. I screamed 'what the fuck' at the tv several times while she was performing.
I just saw Shaun White.....he'a amazing....and he's just a neat person.....
To quad or not to quad, that is the question.

A Freakin' Men.
The world's record in long-jump (or ski-flying, as I like to call it) is held by a woman. The top athlete in the world, forbidden from competing due to the gender marker on her driver's license.
I can watch ten hours of a buncha weirdos brushing a bedpan around the ice with brooms, but I can't watch the most accomplished ski jumper in the world because she is a woman. WTF.
This may actually make me buy secret btw.

I keep watching curling and continue to just not get it. Sort of reminds me of Shuffle Board only you sweep the little grainy stuff off instead of letting it help carry the puck (or whatever it is) ... Have no idea if this is even close...
I'm gonna learn how....well, I am thinking of learning...I hear there are some places around that teach it...I think what I find most appealing is that it is a sport in which a full range of people can participate...I like that idea...
and, since it has a broom I will feel fine to wear a cute apron over my dress...
and, I have lots of warm tights...so, the costume part is set for me !!

Maybe one day they will allow women to compete in this sport--considering a woman actually holds the title for the longest jump--on the very jump she is not allowed to compete on in the Olympics.

I didn't get to see the whole game, but from what I did see, it looked like a good game. I can't say that I'm not a little bummed, but good job to the Canadian women!
I played in a hockey tournament sometime in '98. My coach and the other team's coach were both good friends with one of the women on the US team since they had grown up playing with/against each other. She showed up at the game with her gold medal from the games in Nagano. She had the biggest smile on her face as she spoke to both teams. It was pretty cool to see, and I'm sure the Canadian women are wearing that same grin tonight.

I'm not huge on figure skating, and I don't know a triple lutz from a triple toe loop....
But how about the Canadian woman Joannie Rochette? Her mother passed away unexpectedly on Sunday. And here she is skating 4 days later to a bronze medal! Congrats for her! I can't imagine how difficult this must have been for her.

Watching the medal ceremony right now, and it's making me tear up. What a bittersweet moment for her! I'm not Canadian, but I'm unbelievably happy for her. I actually hoped that the US woman after her would not skate a better program.

I definately teared up too Goofy. Its simply amazing to see such a wonderful young woman have to face such a horrible tragedy, and yet want to continue in the competition to do well (which I am sure that's what her mom would have wanted). She took the bronze medal, winning it for herself and her family as well as for the entire country! I don't think you need to be Canadian to feel proud of what she did, it was something that it beyond words to describe :)

Sports, sexism and sparing our lady parts (http://www.feministing.com/archives/020252.html#more)
excerpt:
This week, Sports Illustrated (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1166502/index.htm) ran an article about sexism in Olympic sports, using the example of ski jumper Lindsey Van, whose sport, despite her best efforts, is not yet allowed in the Olympics. At least, not for women. This year, men's ski jumping was an Olympic event, but women's ski jumping is yet to be recognized by the International Olympic Committee, and like Van, the author of the story believes that its exclusion is a result of sexism on the part of the IOC.
