Is there anyone else that is interested or more so fascinated by the subculture of Steampunk?
I find that not only the clothing, artistic styles, old innovated with the new, antiques mixed with modern, all of these beautiful crafted and witty minds and manners are combined to create a fascinating culture.
Steampunk has always been first and foremost a literary genre, or least a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy that includes social or technological aspects of the 19th century (the steam) usually with some deconstruction of, reimagining of, or rebellion against parts of it (the punk). Unfortunately, it is a poorly defined subgenre, with plenty of disagreement about what is and is not included.
It has also been explained as this: What is Steampunk by the way?

Well, if you are not familiar with the term, it refers to a genre of fiction where steam power, spring gadgets and modern marvels of the 20th century are thrown back to Victorian aesthetics. Technology in a Neo-Victorian setting. The term has spread on to include not just books, but any real mashing up of technology with more classical style, where Verne-esque and Wellsian science is a reality. Some post-apocalyptic elements rise up on occation, depending on the portrayal.

The definitions across the internet vary quite a bit, but that is the general gist of it. Regardless of what your definition of steampunk, welcome to Steampunk Lab, home of all manner of inventions of a curious sort.
No matter how it is explained, everyone has an opinion on it, and most will argue that theirs is more of the truer statement. I tend to think that all views are exceptional and fascinating... Anyone have an interest? Or photo's to share?

absolutely love it!

There's a growing population of steampunk enthusiasts at DragonCon every year - and vendors have some wonderful items they sell there as well.

I can't craft - so all I can do is oogle.

I do however have a page on my pinterest dedicated to steampunk... not much there right now... but I'm picky.

I happen to admit liking the clothing style and steampunk type novels (Cherie Priest being one of my favourites). I actually find it hard to find decent steampunk authors/novels. You can find compilations but whole novels are somewhat more of a challenge. I think for me, as a geek, it ties my love for Victorian era stuff (think Sherlock Holmes) with a taste of modern tech but with a Mousetrap (think the game) feel.

I'm actually contemplating doing a steampunk outfit for the Reunion. :cheesy:

Awesome Tawse! Absolutely fantastic pinterest page! Being picky is what makes every piece count! Thank you so much for sharing. Now I'm going to oogle, lol. Sometimes Ebay and Amazon has really good art pieces that I stare at also, right now I have been watching Oddities and many of their shows have been dipping into Steampunk parties that I just heart over. I am very interested in the clothing choices lately. And I am not one that usually likes clothes unless it's during the mid evil era so for me to be so infatuated lately is different for me. I also love the photography gadgets that have been shown lately. Thanks again for sharing!

Why yes, yes I am.

I've liked the style from afar for some time, but have recently started researching the culture as well a bit. I've found this website (http://www.thesteampunkempire.com) has alot of cool info in their forum. They have one forum dedicated solely to steampunk literature, others to music, and my favorite-Fashion.

What I love most about Steampunk, they don't only cater to small size costumes, they have links to Plus size Woman and men. This is what life is all about, it's a fit for everyone!

You can also log onto etsy

I no can seez. :(

Okay, so here's a tip if you didn't already know it....yard sales are the bomb for finding this stuff. I have 80% of the upcycled supplies for my persona (for probably less than $35, including leather material). I found an old catcher's chest protection for $1. I'm going to try spray painting it like a gunmetal color and using corcksrewy tacks to attach...ummm....I don't know, something, to the front. And if it doesn't work, I'm out $1. If it turns out like it looks in my head....it'll be pretty cool.

You've got to think outside the box. DE-CONSTRUCT everything (purses, pants, watches, cameras, belts, toys, car parts) and then put it back together however YOU want it to look. And that's steampunk. ;)

I love the backpack/rocketpacks. I will probably work on one at some point. But that's too ambitious for the reunion, plus it doesn't suit my persona. Maybe I'll do an airship character with a rocket pack some time.

Yes the backpack/rocketpacks are awesome... Today I was at Goodwill looking for a trench coat or something that would work for me, but to no avail, as usual I can't find things I am looking for, and when I don't need them, they are seen in sets of 3's... I was also rummaging in the kids section trying to find armor,or Halloween things lol. Then I was searching for belts and then Doll looked at me, with the eyes that said, ENOUGH! Lets go, to which I dragged my feet and pouted on the way out...
Note to self... Go after work so you can search for the treasures!

I don't know if your GW is the same, but we have one day a month where EVERYTHING in the store is 50% off. You just gotta keep going. It'll come along, the perfect thing. And they may put more jackets out toward the end of the summer.

I went yard-selling a couple of weeks ago and scored all my guns for like $1.50. I got enough to screw up the first one and then make my favorite one look right, and a couple more.

I came to Steampunk through the Difference Engine which I read because my *god*, William Gibson, had written it. (This was after the Sprawl trilogy (Neuromancer and following) and before the Bridge trilogy (Virtual light and following) ) and while it's interesting it hasn't grabbed me like cyberpunk did.

The Diamond Age, I find a fascinating setting and, in fact, a brief snippet early on the book where Finkle-McGraw is talking to Hackworth about what went terribly wrong at the end of the last century planted the seed of a sci-fi novel I'm slowly but surely slogging my way through writing.

Cheers
Aj

The term "steampunk" was only introduced to me in the past day or so, while watching one of my favorite films, Perfect Creature. It is def a genre I love. Visually, beautiful and creative and the use of cogs/ wheels fans/ steam is both brilliant and desperate in its conception.
There always seems to be an impoverished refinement to everything I have seen in this genre, which to me, could very well be what the future does hold.

Fun thread!

One of my latest discoveries is a steampunk cigar (it even comes with it's own gear): Foundry Cigars and Michael Giannini at 2012 IPCPR in Orlando - YouTube

I also got one of this recently: http://img3.etsystatic.com/014/0/6040661/il_570xN.416911835_palb.jpg

Oh boy, I need book recommendations!
My daughter, 14 years old this summer, loves her some steampunk.
We are always looking for recommended reads.
Qualifiers: Like I said, she's just about 14. Not keen on romance/sex, can tolerate some violence. Pretty high level reader, can read adult books easily so long as content isn't offensive to her.

Happy to hear recommended readings!

Hi there easygoingfemme,

Check out kc dyer: http://www.kcdyer.com :glasses:

I am not sure if it's the exact right age group but I do believe her books are marketed toward 8-14 year olds.

Although I do not think they have a specific Steampunk theme, they do deal with time travel.

I met kc at a writer's convention in Surrey, BC. Lovely human being.
I have not read her books, but cheek them out. They might fit the bill.

Thank you for the recommendations!
She's had that steampunk bible out of the library about a hundred times. Think it will be one she needs to own.

Been actively doing and being a steampunk for several years now. I frequent a local to me convention geared specifically for (haha, look at me with the puns) steampunk called Steamcon (will be happening this year on October 25th-27th in Bellevue, WA).

I recommend that if you are able, you should look into going....it is a blast.

I like Victorian and gothic styles and Steampunk seems related to that. Some of it is really cool.

Good afternoon, gentlefolk. I am a Professional* Navigatrix and Amateur Retrophrenologist. I once brought the sailing ship "The Wanton Strumpet" safely into dock at Ulan Bator in thick fog - I was only let go because Captain Ceri had actually wanted to dock at Shanghai, but she did say I made a good job of the docking though. I was then in the employ of the Blue Star airship line, mostly on the run from New Victoria to Chalons in the Belgian Coprates on Mars, but also took part in the Syrtis Minor expedition, as I hold a Lieutenancy in HM Naval Reserve.

Currently resting between jobs. Please send offers of employment to:

Ms Esme nha Maire, c/o Mrs Throckmortons' Guest House, 47 Albert Boulevard, New Victoria, Western British Territory, Mars.

Yours sincerly, etc.

*(in my mind, though I do actually know some basics of aerial naviagtion)
