People run out of rep eventually, the system only goes up so far, so those of us who've been here forever usually have the same or near same #. It's just how the system is set up.

I think the rep points are not tied to how many times you're thanked and stuff. I think they made it some random ridiculous numbers so noone would feel more than/less than. I think...anyway. So that regardless of who has the highest rep number, it doesn't really mean anything.

the rep power thing makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. (i mean, not that i don't understand why we have it, i just have absolutely no concept of how it works.)

The giving and receiving of rep is like this, not into the math of....
When a person with high rep gives some one who is new a thanks or a comment the recipient's #'s go up, there is no negative rep.
When a new member gives out rep, their rep received goes up.
So when repping you get more rep by giving and receiving.
Look at it this way, it comes with the system and ignore it.

I keep hoping that I get a giant Snickers bar for each rep point...
Then one day you look up and your rep is going in reverese, you know you made it to the top and are on your way ! Kinda like the roll back at Walmart. Score!

The reputation system (also sometimes referred to as the "Karma System") is a way for user to indicate support or dislike of a post. You can hit the little scales (found at the bottom of left of each person's post) and choose either "I approve" or "I disapprove". You can also include a comment.
This adds to your reputation provided that the person hitting the scales has reputation to offer (must be a value over 50 points). You can see your points when you go to UserCP. That value will appear just above the reputations and Thanks you receive. The higher the number of points, the greater the number of "green balls" you'll get.
How much reputation you get from someone hitting those scales will depend on how many points someone has (the value is a percentage of their points).
Now, the Thanks Button is a variation of the Rep in that it allows individuals to give a quick "positive" rep and quick thanks for a post. This was created to lessen the simple "Thanks" posts for information. In this very supportive environment, it's taken off like wildfire (far greater than I would have imagined). I am contemplating creating a modified version of it that would be a "Hugs" (for those times you want to show support for someone when down, facing a challenge, etc.).
That said, it's up to you if you want to use it. That really is a personal choice and just because you receive "Thanks" or a positive rep from someone doesn't necessarily mean you need to do so in return.
Let me know if that help

yep the powers that be disabled the negative/disapprove option on the rep scaley thing....and for good reason
negative reps subtract from your total reps and folks could end up with negative total rep points showing .........besides it's just divisive and mean and nasty and creates a whole shit pile of behind the scenes drama that bleeds into on-screen drama......
and we all know how much juney the poodle dog likes drama!!!!
