View Full Version : Pick Your Secret Service Code Name
It is election time. The Secret Service always has names for candidates and their significant others. Sometimes, the candidates pick the names themselves, and their family picks names starting with the same first letter.
Here are some of the more interesting names:
Bowhunter
Vice Presidential Nominee Paul Ryan cuz he likes to hunt, with a bow. His wife's code name is Buttercup.
Javelin
Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney. Javelin was once a model of car made by American Motors, where Romney's father was chief executive.
Renegade
President Barack Obama opted for this moniker after being presented with a list of names beginning with the letter "R." As custom dictates, the rest of his family's code names will be alliterative: wife Michelle is known as "Renaissance;" daughters Malia and Sasha are "Radiance" and "Rosebud," respectively.
Lancer
President John F. Kennedy. Kennedy's moniker meshed well with the "Camelot" theme of his Administration. It also works as a play on "Lancelot," King Arthur's notoriously womanizing knight. Jackie was Lace, Caroline was Lyric, John was Lark.
Searchlight
President Richard Nixon. For a chief executive undone by the late-night break-in at the Watergate Hotel, and the subsequent coverup, Nixon's Secret Service nickname — a device that reveals all — is deeply ironic. Pat was Starlight.
Deacon
President Jimmy Carter. The former Georgia governor, a devout Baptist, taught Sunday school even while occupying the Oval Office; his code-name was a fitting choice. Rosalyn was Dancer.
Sunburn
Sen. Ted Kennedy. As a presidential candidate in 1980, the Lion of the Senate (and pale, Irish-Catholic New Englander) had to suffer this code-name.
Rawhide
President Ronald Reagan. For a president who once starred in Westerns, this moniker was a perfect fit.
Smurfette
Karenna Gore, daughter of vice-president Al. Nineteen years old when her father became vice president in 1993, Karenna was told she could pick her own codename, as long as it had two syllables and started with an "s." Ever since, she wrote in 1997, "I have been cringing."
Angler
Vice-President Dick Cheney. Though Cheney's codename no doubt derived from his love of fishing, it also aptly described the vice-president's knack for pressing his agenda behind the scenes. Washington Post reporter Barton Gellman liked the name enough to use it as the title for his book on the Cheney vice presidency.
So, if you had to choose a code name for yourself and your others what would you pick?

I know of a pitbull by the same name. She's actually pretty sweet but has the potential (because of her breed) to be lethal. I'd like to think that I'm like that.

I would want to go with "Who." Not because I am a rabid fan of the iconic band The Who but because I would love to cause havoc and confusion when the following convo. would ensue;
SS Agent #1 "Who's in the oval office"
SS Agent #2 "What? What do you mean who? Security breach? Call for back up?"
SS Agent # 1 "No, 'Who" is in the oval office?"
SS Agent #2 "Scramble, alert"
SS Agent #3 "Who is on Air Force One"
SS Agent #4 "OMG...call for back-up, we need an id!"
At a press briefing...."Regarding sex in the oval office, Lincoln bedroom and presidential limo. Name the guilty party!"
W. H. press office.."Who?"
Ha ha ha ha...yeah...totally love the old school "Who's on First" schtick.
Katniss~~ (above being clear evidence of why I would never be allowed to run for public office of any kind. )

My names are easy...
I would be "Owner face" and Riley would be "pup butt."
Riley has called me "Owner" for almost a year now; for that same period, I have been calling him "pup." I am bad to turn every name into a nick name, and one day, I started calling him "pup butt." Not long after that, he started calling me 'Owner face." Both names have stuck with us on and off over time.
And for my kids:
Colby-tech geek (because he is)
Tyler-happy kid (because he is)
Ethan-little bit (not that it would do well for when he grows up but it fits now)
:sparklyheart:

How about "Urban Bookworm"?
In old personal ads I would describe myself as an "adorably neurotic urban bookworm." No wonder the responses didn't pile in :|. I remember my brother helping me with the ad and deleting the line, "I love to play Scrabble and prefer to play with free use of a dictionary." He thought the part about my "open dictionary" preference was especially TMI. The happy ending is that I am now with a butch who allows me to call "partying" ordering a pizza and playing Scrabble together at home on Saturday night (and, yes, I am allowed to cruise the dictionary) and who does not get offended when we are going out for a Valetine's Day romantic dinner and I say, "Don't forget to bring reading."
My other thought was "Chunky Monkey."
You know, like the Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavor. And, yes, that was also used by me as the headline for my personal ads back in the day when my ads appeared in the free newspaper, the Village Voice, because Internet ad sites didn't much exist.
