Finally finished watching The Hobbit and LOTR trilogies. I have watched the LOTR trilogy every holiday since it came out on DVD. I now watch it on Amazon. Extended versions. I had to buy them, but worth the money. I was late finishing this year. Usually I start at Thanksgiving and finish by Christmas.

I enjoyed the only season of Agatha Raisin on Acorn TV on Amazon. I wished there had been more.

Arrow, OA, and Dancing on the Edge.

I liked OA. I was a little disappointed in the last episode but I'm hoping it comes back with a new twist.

I watched season one of The Crown and liked it. The series moved at a nice pace for me and I liked the seemingly honest portrayals of Prince Philip, Princess Margaret, and Winston Churchill. John Lithgow played Churchill and was outstanding, as usual. He'll probably get some awards next year.

Just finished first season of "The Crown" and quite enjoyed it. As Orema says, the portrayals are "seemingly honest"; but I just can't wrap my head around Queen Elizabeth giving Prince Philip a bj. (Can't remember which episode or I'd direct you there lol).

Can't help wondering if "Lilibet" has seen this. I suspect she's mortified. However I do know she loves "Coronation Street" and that has its racy bits too.

Amazon:

I just finally finished Goliath last night. I really hope that they bring it back for season two. I love a good legal procedural, espescially with terrific actors.

Billy Bob is so thin, I keep thinking, each time I look at him: I hope that he is not sick. Regardless, he is a great actor and I really hope all turns out well.

Oh: also a great tittle for the show, except Billy's character is the the not the Goliath- he is the David.

Goliath is the big, fancy, expensiv firm he is suing on behalf of his client and is really the Goliath.

Clever.

The husband and I just watched a documentary called, Suited. Very uplifting documentary about finding a well made suit. Not too bad on the eye candy front either if you are a femme... We have a streaming service called, NowTV. Pretty much has everything you'd want to watch from the states. (http://www.butchfemmeplanet.com/forum/showthread.php?p=665613#post665613)

I just streamed Hutton Garden The Heist (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5953854/?ref_=nv_sr_2). It was an average heist movie based on a true story. Nothing to write home about, but I enjoyed it. I only recommend watching it if you're keen on heist movies.

I have no idea where you'd find the time to watch tv, but sex on Grey's Anatomy might be somewhat different than how it's portrayed on GH.... I could be wrong, though, lol.

I recently cancelled Netflix, but I have Hulu and Amazon Prime and I am looking for some good winter season series. Any suggestions?

I watch Rosewood, Nashville, Chicago Med & Lethal Weapon on Hulu presently.

Have you watched the new series, Goliath with Billy Bob Thornton on Prime? Great series. Also starting hottie and great actress Maria Bello. With William Hurt and Molly Parker (of Deadwood fame).

Also 2 seasons of the Phillip K Dick short story adaptation of The Man in the High Castle? Particularly well-done.

New great series this year: Sneaky Pete with Giovani Ribisi and Bryan Cranston

There are the three seasons of the Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning Transparent.

I also liked One Mississipi with Tig Notaro.

I loved Bosch- two seasons of the Michael Connolly book series about LAPD Detective Harry Bosch. Season 3 coming soon.

Amazon has really stepped up its game in the series department. All of these will keep you busy for a while!

It is not an Amazon original series as it was on AMC or A&E but The Night Manager was quite good. It is starting Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie. It is based on John leCarre's novel. I thought it was really good.

... they just killed Nina—one of the main characters. I'm not shocked they killed her because I expected her to die in Season 3, but the way they did it took me by surprise and left me feeling really sad. There was nothing obscene nor vulgar about her death—if anything, it was performed without cruelty or humiliation, but it shook me to watch her receive the news and to see her knees buckle. It was fast, unexpected—nothing leading up to her execution—and I'm still bothered by it.

Quite a fascinating bit of political history considering where we find ourselves today.

ABOUT THE FILM

In the summer of 1968 television news changed forever. Dead last in the ratings, ABC hired two towering public intellectuals to debate each other during the Democratic and Republican national conventions. William F. Buckley Jr. was a leading light of the new conservative movement. A Democrat and cousin to Jackie Onassis, Gore Vidal was a leftist novelist and polemicist. Armed with deep-seated distrust and enmity, Vidal and Buckley believed each other’s political ideologies were dangerous for America. Like rounds in a heavyweight battle, they pummeled out policy and personal insult—their explosive exchanges devolving into vitriolic name-calling. Live and unscripted, they kept viewers riveted. Ratings for ABC News skyrocketed, and a new era in public discourse was born.

-------New to Netflix-------

‘American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson’ (Feb. 2) One of the best TV series of 2016 finally makes it to a subscription streaming platform. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Finding Dory’ This sequel to Pixar’s hit undersea adventure, “Finding Nemo,” catches up with Marlin the clown fish father (voiced by Albert Brooks), his son Nemo (Alexander Gould) and their forgetful friend, Dory the blue tang (Ellen DeGeneres). This time it’s Dory’s turn to seek her family across the ocean. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Paris Is Burning’ This 1991 documentary is a must for fans of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” or anyone interested in New York City or L.G.B.T. history. “Paris Is Burning” follows several drag queen groups (known as “houses”) in New York City as they compete against each other in extravagant drag balls. In between the fashion shows and vogue dancing, the subjects talk candidly about poverty and race. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Babe’ A misfit pig learns to herd sheep like his adoptive Border collie parents in this fluffy family movie, cowritten by the “Mad Max” director, George Miller. “Charlotte’s Web” vibes aside, “Babe” is a cute film about finding your place in the world. Or in Babe’s case, a farm. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Magic Mike’ Don’t forget to bring your own singles. In this Steven Soderbergh drama, Magic Mike (Channing Tatum) takes a young stripper-to-be (Alex Pettyfer) under his tutelage but secretly wants out of the spotlight to start his own furniture company. Thanks to an inspired casting decision, Matthew McConaughey plays Dallas, a strip-club owner and seductive M.C.. All right, all right. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ It is neither Halloween nor Christmas, but that won’t stop you from getting a Danny Elfman song (or two) from this movie stuck in your head. Halloween Town’s Jack Skellington (voiced by Elfman and Chris Sarandon) kidnaps Santa Claus and tries to help him by giving out gifts on Christmas Eve. Well, that was the plan. Then the Boogeyman arrives. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Clouds of Sils Maria’ (Feb. 12) A famous actress (Juliette Binoche) returns to the play that launched her career decades before, but this time in the role of an older, suicidal woman. A new starlet (Kristen Stewart) takes the actress’s original part, that of an attractive young woman, in this film about fame and youth. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Milk’ (Feb. 15) This portrait of California’s first openly gay official, Harvey Milk, follows the politician’s rise from San Francisco activist to civil servant. Sean Penn won a best actor Oscar for his portrayal of Milk. (Add it to your Watchlist.)
Arnold Schwarzenegger in “The Running Man.”Braveworld Productions

-------New on Hulu-------

‘The Golden Girls’ (Feb. 13) Thank you for being a friend, “Golden Girls,” and for finally being available to stream. The veteran comedy, about four senior women (including one mother-daughter pair) living together in Miami, is one of the greats, and it more than holds up, even 25 years after it went off the air. If you haven’t seen it in a while, be prepared to be delighted: It’s funnier — and, honestly, dirtier — than you might remember. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Sabrina’ Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn may have had a slight age difference (O.K., a 30-year difference), but that didn’t stop old Hollywood from coupling them up in this 1954 romantic comedy from director Billy Wilder. Hepburn plays the love interest of two rich brothers played by Bogart and William Holden. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘The Running Man’ It’s 2017, the economy has collapsed, the United States has shut its borders and represses dissenters … and wait, where are you going? I haven’t gotten to the part where Arnold Schwarzenegger competes in a deadly reality TV show! (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Shakespeare in Love’ For the English Lit majors who wrote fanfic about The Bard, here’s a 1998 romantic drama starring Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow as the poet and his muse. Academy voters fell for the movie too, awarding “Shakespeare in Love” seven Oscars, including best picture and, for Paltrow, best actress. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Soapdish’ In this 1991 movie, a chaotic soap opera set becomes comedic fodder for a large ensemble cast that includes Sally Field, Kevin Kline, Robert Downey Jr. and Whoopi Goldberg. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Margin Call’ (Feb. 3) This 2011 financial thriller follows several employees as they try to rescue the investment bank where they work, after a junior analyst (Zachary Quinto) discovers that the bank may be going bust. Years after the 2008 recession, this movie still has bite, tapping into lingering economic anxieties. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘The Dog’ (Feb. 3) In the sweaty 1975 New York film “Dog Day Afternoon,” a charismatic bank robber (Al Pacino) botches a heist to steal money for his partner’s sex change operation. As if that story weren’t sensational enough, the documentary “The Dog” reveals the real-life robber who inspired it as an even more outrageous and unapologetic figure than his Hollywood counterpart. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

-------New on Amazon Prime-------

‘The Americans’ Season 4 (Feb. 15) Amazon Prime has been the streaming home for “The Americans” for a while now. If you aren’t caught up through last season’s episodes, you still have a few weeks before the Season 5 premiere on March 7. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Author: The J.T. LeRoy Story’ (Feb. 16) Writer Laura Albert wasn’t the first author to try to pass as someone else, but her creation of a young man (J.T. LeRoy) suffering from H.I.V. and abuse earned her celebrity attention and public adoration. Well, until her alternative persona was exposed. This documentary retraces Albert’s deception and its subsequent fallout. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Thelma & Louise’ (Feb. 27) This girl power favorite about two best friends (Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon) starts innocuously enough but gets serious when the friends have to flee the cops after one of them kills a rapist. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

Also of Interest

“Nuts!,”
“Hoosiers,”
“Sabrina,”
“The Running Man,”
Several James Bond movies (again!)
“Margin Call” (Feb.4).

-------Movies New to HBO-------

‘A Bigger Splash’ Tilda Swinton plays a (temporarily) voiceless rock star, Ralph Fiennes is her former manager, and Matthias Schoenaerts and Dakota Johnson play their partners in this lusty psychodrama set in a gorgeous island paradise. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Broadcast News’ In this 1987 romantic comedy by James L. Brooks, workplace drama flows freely in a love triangle between an ambitious news producer (Holly Hunter), a principled reporter (Albert Brooks) and a charismatic but dim anchorman (William Hurt). (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Clockers’ Several Spike Lee movies are coming to HBO this month, including this murder mystery starring Mekhi Phifer, Harvey Keitel and John Turturro, based on a book by the great novelist Richard Price. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Crooklyn’ This film shows a milder side of Spike Lee (it’s rated PG-13) compared with his usual fare . With a nostalgic lens on his Brooklyn neighborhood in the ’70s, Lee’s 1994 drama follows the busy brownstone life of a teacher (Alfre Woodard), her musician husband (Delroy Lindo) and their five rambunctious kids. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Do the Right Thing’ Perhaps the most recognized Spike Lee movie, the Oscar-nominated “Do the Right Thing” is as potent and relevant now as it was in 1989, as its characters face racism, gentrification and police brutality. Set on the hottest day in the year, Mookie (Lee) observes the rising racial tensions between his neighbors, business owners and cops on his Brooklyn block. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Mo’ Better Blues’ Since Denzel Washington is up for yet another Oscar for his latest film “Fences,” check out one of his earlier roles as a quarreling jazz bandleader in this 1990 drama from Spike Lee. Wesley Snipes and Samuel L. Jackson co-star. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Raging Bull’ Robert De Niro gives one of cinema’s most unforgettable performances in this 1980 Oscar-winning drama from Martin Scorsese, “Raging Bull.” In telling the story of boxer Jake La Motta, De Niro shaped his body and mannerisms to play the fighter throughout his career, from a scrappy rookie to an overweight has-been. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Crimson Peak’ (Feb. 5) Guillermo del Toro’s latest was marketed as a horror film, but this gothic romance/ghost story is more in line with Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rebecca” than it is with “The Conjuring.” In it, a young writer in 1887 (Mia Wasikowska) is wooed away by a dashing stranger (Tom Hiddleston) to his creepy house, which is most certainly haunted. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Tickled’ (Feb. 27) When the journalist David Farrier set out to do a puff piece about a tickling competition, he didn’t intend to discover the dark underbelly of a subculture of tickling fetishists. This was one of the more original and surprising documentaries of 2016. (Add it to your Watchlist.)
HBO Original Series

‘Girls’ (Feb. 12) Season 6 will be the final season for Lena Dunham’s hot-take-inspiring series. (Add it to your Watchlist.)

‘Big Little Lies’ (Feb. 19) There’s nothing little about the big name cast (Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley) in this adaptation of the 2014 novel by Liane Moriarty.

On Hulu- The Choice (2016)

"Travis Parker has everything a man could want: a good job, loyal friends, even a waterfront home in small-town North Carolina. In full pursuit of the good life—boating, swimming, and regular barbecues with his good-natured buddies—he holds the vague conviction that a serious relationship with a woman would only cramp his style. That is, until Gabby Holland moves in next door. Despite his attempts to be neighborly, the appealing redhead seems to have a chip on her shoulder about him…and the presence of her longtime boyfriend doesn’t help. Despite himself, Travis can’t stop trying to ingratiate himself with his new neighbor, and his persistent efforts lead them both to the doorstep of a journey that neither could have foreseen. Spanning the eventful years of young love, marriage and family, The Choice ultimately confronts us with the most heart wrenching question of all: how far would you go to keep the hope of love alive?"

I am streaming the premier of two new shows via Hulu. Both are Fox TV shows.

24: Legacy is an American television series created by Manny Coto and Evan Katz for the Fox network. The series is a spin-off of 24 which was created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran.

APB is an American drama television series broadcast on FOX during the 2016–17 season. A first trailer was released on May 16, 2016. The series premiered on February 6, 2017.

I'm still plowing my way through "The Borgias" on Netflix... I've had to draw a flow chart and a genealogical tree on my wall...my entire wall...and I'm no where near covering all the tortures, castrations and penis lop-offs, hanging and quarterings, limb rip-offs, and straight forward stabbings, poisonings, and strangulations that keep the plot moving along at a lively pace.

I just love it and I'll be so sorry when Season 3 ends. I'm hoping a whole lot of little Borgia "Papal bastards" get born at the end of Season 3 and there will be many many more bloody back-stabbing seasons to come.

It hasn't tainted it for me. I highly recommend giving it a chance. I will warn you, it takes a few episodes to really get going but it just gets better and better.

I started watching Spartacus on Netflix. My lady watched it and it seemed interesting.

Sadly, the original actor got ill after the first season and passed soon after. There's a documentary about his cancer battle called Be Here Now...also on Netflix. Very sad though. He was incredibly young and healthy.

New to Netflix
‘Gremlins’
Starts streaming: April 1
Used to be, when someone asked you what your favorite Christmas movie was, there were some obvious answers — “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “Miracle on 34th Street,” “White Christmas” — but then came the ’80s. And all of a sudden the definition of “Christmas movie” expanded. Now, it could be one in which a shoeless cop in a high-rise goes around killing bad guys (“Die Hard”) or one in which a depressed cop goes around killing bad guys (“Lethal Weapon”) or one in which a teenage girl tells the tale of how her dad tried to play Santa, got stuck in their chimney, and died (“Gremlins”). Feel free to watch this one after midnight.

‘Schindler’s List’
Starts streaming: April 1
After making totally fine historical dramas like “Empire of the Sun” and “The Color Purple,” Steven Spielberg embarked on this more personal and sweeping project, based on the true story of a sympathetic German (Liam Neeson) who saved over a thousand Jews from concentration camps during the Holocaust.

‘Something’s Gotta Give’
Starts streaming: April 1
Who would have ever imagined that a charming rom-com love triangle could be constructed with Jack Nicholson (playing a womanizing music executive), Diane Keaton (playing a neurotic playwright) and Keanu Reeves (playing a hunky doctor). No one. Yet here we are.

‘The BFG’
Starts streaming: April 6
Originally set to debut on Netflix last month, Steven Spielberg’s most recent film is an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s fantastical children’s book, which follows a the adventure of a young girl (Ruby Barnhill) to Giant Country. There she meets a big friendly giant (Mark Rylance), which is the only thing that “BFG” could stand for.

‘Kubo and the Two Strings’
Starts streaming: April 8
In this adventurous tale set in an ancient Japan where magic exists, Kubo (voiced by Art Parkinson) must learn to use an enchanted two-stringed instrument to fight back against the relatives who killed his father and attacked his mother. Along the journey, Kubo is joined by an assortment of supporting characters voiced by Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, George Takei and Ralph Fiennes.

‘Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return’
Starts streaming: April 14
Make fun of terrible B-movies just like old times, though a new host (Jonah Ray) has joined our favorite snarky puppets. Felicia Day, Joel McHale and Dan Harmon will join the “3000” veterans Kevin Murphy, Bill Corbett and Mary Jo Pehl aboard the Satellite of Love. You can warm up by sampling the “Mystery Science Theater 3000” collection currently available on Netflix.

‘The Prestige’
Starts streaming: April 21
In late-Victorian London, two magicians become consumed by a rivalry that leads to the creation of a morbidly dark trick in this Christopher Nolan thriller. The film has almost as many stars as it has illusions — Christian Bale, David Bowie, Michael Caine, Hugh Jackman and Scarlett Johansson. And for a film by a director who has literally directed two movies with the word “dark” in the title, this might be Nolan’s most dour yet.

‘Queen of Katwe’
Starts streaming: April 25
Ten-year-old Phiona Mutesi (Madina Nalwanga) lives in a slum in Uganda and doesn’t see much cause for hope. That is, until she comes upon a local chess class and discovers a talent for the game. Her single mother, Nakku (Lupita Nyong’o), and an enthusiastic coach (David Oyelowo) stand by her side in this heartwarming tale based on a true story.

‘Casting JonBenét’
Starts streaming: April 28
Fresh from Sundance, this meta-documentary for the true crime fans in the crowd looks at the JonBenet Ramsey murder case through the actors auditioning to re-enact the lives of Ramsey, her family, suspects, witnesses and just about anybody involved in the story.

Also of interest (from April 1): “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “An American Tail,” “Tower.”

Netflix Originals

The Get Down: Season 1, Part 2
Starts streaming: April 7
This visionary fiasco from Baz Luhrmann and Stephen Adly Guirgis about the burgeoning hip-hop and disco scene in the South Bronx in the mid-to-late ’70s earned mixed notices for the six-episode first part of its first season. But its outsized ambition and gonzo craft made it a true television event. The second half of the season picks up the action in 1978, as Zeke, Shaolin Fantastic and other young artists continue to plug away at their musical dreams.

‘Girlboss: Season 1’
Starts streaming: April 21
Britt Robertson stars in an adaptation of the autobiography by Sophia Amoruso, a tech and fashion entrepreneur who experienced a rapid rise to fame while still in her 20s. The series is being overseen by Kay Cannon, the screenwriter for “Pitch Perfect,” whose experiences working on “30 Rock” and “New Girl” should make her an ideal choice to tell the story of a stylish, harried young businesswoman.

‘Dear White People: Season 1’
Starts streaming: April 28
Writer-director Justin Simien’s 2014 campus comedy, “Dear White People,” took a frank and funny look at Ivy League race relations, with a memorable collection of characters and a scattered assortment of plot lines that — honestly — felt like the pilot for a TV series. Netflix apparently agreed, and is now letting Simien convert his insights and joke-writing skills into serialized form, with a new cast taking its turn at portraying the movie’s feisty college radicals.

‘Rodney King’
Starts streaming: April 28
Spike Lee reunites with one of his most frequent collaborators, the actor Roger Guenveur Smith, for a filmed production of Smith’s one-man show about the man whose L.A.P.D. beating sparked a riot. Lee previously directed the Peabody-winning film adaptation of Smith’s solo play “A Huey P. Newton Story,” but this new piece is more freewheeling, using Rodney King’s life and death as a jumping-off point for a monologue about L.A. race relations.

____________________________________
New to Amazon Prime

‘Almost Famous’
Starts streaming: April 1
In this film, loosely based on the young experiences of the writer-director Cameron Crowe, a budding music reporter in the ’70s joins a band on the road for Rolling Stone magazine and witnesses the highs and lows of the rock ’n’ roll lifestyle up close. It wouldn’t be a Crowe film without a packed soundtrack.

‘Election’
Starts streaming: April 1
This painfully funny dark comedy about a high school election gone rotten stars a young Reese Witherspoon as an insufferable overachiever and Matthew Broderick as an equally insufferable teacher who tries to rig the race for student council president. If you’ve ever heard anyone described as a “Tracy Flick,” this is where that comes from. And if you’re enjoying Witherspoon on HBO’s “Big Little Lies” but have never seen this movie, complete the loop.

‘RoboCop’
Starts streaming: April 1
A private business attempts to replace the beleaguered city of Detroit’s police force with robot cops (what ... to call them?), and it goes about as well as expected.

‘In a World ...’
Starts streaming: April 9
Film industry misogyny may be the talk of Hollywood trade papers today, but director Lake Bell addressed it head-on in 2013 with this smart comedy about a voice actress (Bell) looking to outdo her famous voice-actor dad and his male protégé to score a big gig.

‘The Handmaiden’
Starts streaming: April 13
Park Chan-wook (“Oldboy”) weaves together a complex story of intrigue, betrayal and love (or is it lust?) set in 1930s Japanese-occupied Korea. In it, an isolated Japanese heiress (Kim Min-hee) hires a Korean handmaiden (Kim Tae-ri), who is secretly plotting with a con artist (Ha Jung-woo) to swindle the wealthy woman out of her inheritance.

‘The Love Witch’
Starts streaming: April 14
All’s fair in love and witchcraft, or so the brilliantly styled Elaine (Samantha Robinson) would have you believe. Desperate for love, she brews magic potions that work all too well on her targets and causes her more headache than heartache. Director Anna Biller employs a vibrant color palette and B-movie aesthetics for an enchanting concoction that’s a welcome respite from so many dark and dingy horror movies.

‘American Honey’
Starts streaming: April 27
A directionless young woman named Star (Sasha Lane) joins a group of traveling swindlers after being charmed by their ringleader (Shia LaBeouf) in this 2016 film by Andrea Arnold. As in her previous work (“Fish Tank,” “Wuthering Heights”), Arnold’s camera moves freely and observes things in detail, giving this movie a sense of the wanderlust followed by its characters.

Also of interest (from April 1 unless noted): “Saturday Night Fever,” “There Will Be Blood,” “Hello, My Name Is Doris” (April 2).

____________________________________
New to Hulu

‘The Hours’
Starts streaming: April 1
With a powerhouse lineup including Julianne Moore, Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep, this dark drama packs a lot of talent into its run time. In the film, three different women in three different eras struggle with fear, longing and frustration at different points in their lives. Kidman earned an Oscar for best actress for her role as Virginia Woolf.

‘March of the Penguins’
Starts streaming: April 1
Morgan Freeman narrates this hit documentary with all the benevolent warmth and sympathy you might expect from the man who played God in “Bruce Almighty.” The film details the difficulties faced by emperor penguins as they try to hatch and feed their young in harsh Antarctic conditions.

‘Saturday Night Fever’
Starts streaming: April 1
Tony Manero (John Travolta) tries to transcend his working-class Italian-American roots by being the best on the dance floor, but he’ll need the best partner if he wants to win a club’s dance contest. Don’t skip out on the movie’s memorable disco scenes, leisure suits and city grime as the film celebrates its 40th anniversary.

‘The Warriors’
Starts streaming: April 1
Maybe pair “Saturday Night Fever” with this one, another New York City classic set in the 1970s. After a gang summit goes wrong, the Warriors are framed for the murder of a big-time leader and are forced to retreat to their turf in Coney Island. Good luck with that late night train service.

‘Short Term 12’
Starts streaming: April 13
In this, her breakout performance, Brie Larson plays a counselor at a home for troubled children who is struggling with her past and her impending future as marriage looms on the horizon. Based on his own short film of the same name from 2008, Destin Daniel Cretton expands his look into the emotional baggage of its beleaguered lead character.

‘The Babadook’
Starts streaming: April 14
One of the scarier movies in recent memory comes from Australia and involves a disturbing children’s book. In the film, a widow and her troubled son are terrorized by a boogeyman figure that invades their home and then her mind. Maybe you shouldn’t watch this movie home alone in the dark.

Also of interest (from April 1 unless noted): “Almost Famous,” “Election,” “Chaplin,” “Days of Thunder,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “JFK,” “RoboCop,” “Serpico,” “Thelma and Louise,” “Hello, My Name Is Doris” (April 2), “In A World” (April 9).

____________________________________
New to HBO

‘Cape Fear’
Starts streaming: April 1
Robert De Niro has probably never been scarier than in this 1991 Martin Scorsese remake of the 1962 thriller about an ex-con (De Niro) who returns to wreck the life of the lawyer (Nick Nolte) who buried evidence that would have set him free. De Niro might even be more frightening than his predecessor in the original, Robert Mitchum. Which is no small feat.

‘The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford’
Starts streaming: April 1
This underseen film is worth seeking out if you were impressed by Casey Affleck’s Oscar-winning performance in “Manchester by the Sea”; if you like to see Brad Pitt acting cool (he’s Jesse James); if you’re a cinephile who adores the work of cinematographer Roger Deakins; or you happen to be a fan of the musician Nick Cave (who has a scene-stealing cameo and worked on the score).

‘The Deer Hunter’
Starts streaming: April 1
Before the box office debacle “Heaven’s Gate” tarnished director Michael Cimino’s career, he made this tense and epic drama centered on three men (Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken and John Savage) from Pennsylvania steel country, and how the Vietnam War affected their lives and their loved ones.

Also of interest (from April 1): “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” “Play Misty for Me,” “Unforgiven.”

The title put me off but I gave it a try anyway and I am glad that I did:

She's beautiful when she's angry. (2014, documentary)

It is about the full circle of reproductive rights from today, back to the beginning of the women's movement 40 years ago, segueing into lesbian rights (Rita Mae, Karla Jay) and the struggles for reproductive rights when abortion first became legal.

Oh, btw, did you know Trump quietly and privately signed a bill on Thursday that allows states to withhold federal money from organizations that provide abortion services, including Planned Parenthood?

Here we are again. Almost back we we started.

He needs another anti-abortion loon on the Supreme Court and then we will be totally where we started.

We watched The Handmaid's Tale last night.

I have some vague impressions:

It was intense and disturbing, but i was not traumatized.

I am seeing on social media that many have had really strong reactions, sobbing, shaking, etc. I don't know if this might be because i have read the book a bunch of times, and led a discussion about it earlier this year-- or because the religious mindset that produced that dystopia has always been part of my life.

I always found the book more grim than shocking, more of a validation than a revelation: "yep, that's exactly what would happen if my uncle had his way, this is a good reminder to keep an eye on him"

I did find that i had to explain a lot of what was going on to Mr. Jenny, who has not read the book. i am wondering if the script was written assuming most viewers would have read it. Either the exposition was confusing, or Mr. Jenny is impatient.

If you are looking for great drama, terrific actors and if you like detective stories; this is just a really great series.

Now I have to wait for season 4 and who knows when that will be!?

I got Hulu today just because I wanted to watch The Handmaid's Tale. I don't like Hulu so will keep it until the series is over.

I did read the book too, years ago. Margret Atwood, author. It is free with a Kindle Unlimited so I just downloaded it.

I am on the second episode of the Hulu series and I think it is very well done

I just keep thinking: It is a cautionary tale of a world that Trump, Pence and the Republicans would just love to have. I don't think we are terribly far off.

The government doesn't even need to be overthrown. The electoral college opened the door and let them walk right in.

At least I am not a handmaiden now.

I am a Martha.

The show doesn't upset me nor make me shake. Every day that I read more of what Trump and the gang are doing: that fucking upsets me.

Wiki says:

Set in a near-future New England, in a totalitarian theocracy which has overthrown the United States government, the novel explores themes of women in subjugation and the various means by which they gain individualism and independence.

I am half way through Season 2 of Grace & Frankie! (I know...it is "older" series, BUT I just began to watch!!).

I have thought about watching Handmaid's Tale....glad to see folks comment on it.

Interested in the new series 13 Reasons Why...about a 13 yr old who takes her own life & leaves 13 letters telling the reasons why..13 reasons...

while it may sound depressing, I find stories like this to be very profound, perhaps offering insight to other teens who may be struggling with these same thoughts. Suicide is something we will probably never understand. I had a parent do this when I was 16 yrs old.

Steve Carrell, the guy who starred in Little Miss Sunshine, stars in the movie Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. It's a comedy drama, which is laced with darkish humor....but, I thought it was well done. The soundtrack to the movie, was pretty good too.

Does anyone watch Catastrophe on Amazon Prime?

I have read really great reviews about it but never did.

I saw a clip on TV this morning that cracked me up and may now have to give it a try:

Wife comes in, husband on couch with just underpants on.

She says: Where are your trousers?

Hubby: I feel really fat, they were too tight, so I threw them away.

It just cracked me up. Part of the visual is that he has really, super-hairy legs.

The other part is that I could relate.

I have, on a rare occasion, worn pants that were too tight and was miserable all day.

This show is hilarious!

Right after I posted this a I binged all 3 seasons.

Rob Delany is truly funny.

Carrie Fisher plays his mom. This was the series that she was in and was coming back from London on the airplane, after shooting the last episode of season 3 when she died.

She was so funny as a curmudgeon MIL and mom in the series.

I don't know how they will handle it in season 4.

Don't let it stop you from watching it, it is great.

The story of Ray Kroc, a salesman who turned two brothers' innovative fast food eatery, McDonald's, into the biggest restaurant business in the world with a combination of ambition, persistence and ruthlessness.

The Founder features the true story of how Ray Kroc, a struggling salesman from Illinois, met Mac and Dick McDonald, who were running a burger operation in 1950s Southern California. Kroc was impressed by the brothers' speedy system of making the food and saw franchise potential. I watched Rocco on Netflix, about an Italian porn star. I hadn't heard of him because he is a heterosexual performer in the genre that seems to feature a lot of "shoving his fingers down her throat until she cries or vomits" type of porn.

Sooo here's my very spoilery reveiw of it, so don't scroll down if you want to take it all in yourself. But me, it left me feeling sad and empty and I have to tell someone why.

It starts off with his dick and it's in Italian, so unless you speak Italian, be prepared to read subtitles and if you are a good little film buff, you won't mind that. He talks about being "attracted to the void" and "having a sexuality that doesn't exist".

He has been at this for about 30 years, so by now he's starring alongside women young enough to be his daughter and these young women are eager to become famous like him and are willing to endure anal sex and having his fingers shoved down their throats until they cry.

He talked about masturbating for the first time at the age of eight or nine and his mother seeing it and smiling at him because he was becoming a man.

He talked a lot about his mother. After she died, he was comforting her best friend, a woman near his mother's age and they were both crying and he was hugging her. He became aroused. He dropped his pants, put his dick in her mouth and came in about three seconds. She didn't say anything and he didn't either and he zipped up and left.

That part really bothered me. I couldn't stop thinking about her if and if she was ok. Because to me, that was rape. Was it to her? What was she thinking? "Here we go again? At my age?" Or "Hurray, I got to blow the Italian Stallion."

He's a family man too, with a wife and kids and they show them and how they react to what Dad does for a living. We see how they make the movies and people sit around and talk about how it is all fine because we are all consenting adults. Except for maybe that one time with his mom's friend.

But I can't stop thinking about the lady and wondering what happened to her and if she's ok. 'Member Turandot? Everybody is all happy and singing at the end when Calaif is marrying that murderous bitch Turandot and I'm sitting there screaming "Liu is dead, you asshole!" Because I guess I am just a wet blanket. God damn, people are awful.

I'm house sitting for my BFF, so I've almost nearly finished the first season (19+ episodes!) Of...... This Is Us!

Oh mY, I can't spoil it by telling you much, but OMG, Jack & Rebecca have triplets, except only two live, one dies, yet a mysterious event leads an African American Black man to drop off am infant baby at the local fire station.....And, Jack and Rebecca adopt him.

This saga is about their family relationships amid very turbulent social times of the 1960s. Bonus: the sound track takes you back to that specific period I'm time, and it's simply a great mini-series worth watching!

I am very ambivalent about this series.

It has Hugh Laurie as star and he is an outstanding actor. Also starring is Gretchen Mol and Ethan Suplee.

He plays a forensic psychologist.

Number one for psychiatrists, therapists and anyone in the field of psychiatry and mental health: maintain healthy and strong boundaries with clients and patients.

Hugh as Dr. Eldon Chance: loses his. Over a woman (duh).

Sometimes it bugs me so much I have to stop watching it for a while. However, the acting is great and it does draw me back to see what is going to happen.

Suspend belief is the name of the game here.

Hulu says: "Based on Kem Nunn's novel, Chance is described as a provocative psychological thriller that focuses on Eldon Chance (Laurie), a San Francisco-based forensic neuropsychiatrist who reluctantly gets sucked into a violent and dangerous world of mistaken identity, police corruption and mental illness."

I post about this series every year that a new season comes out because it is just that good.

Season 4 came out on Netflix on December 21st. Of course I watched it all in one sitting but it is easy to do because each season of this BBC2 series is only 6 episodes .

What can I say: Cillian Murohy is truly charismatic. He is a tremdous actor. The rest of the cast is excellent, too.

When I first saw it, I was put off by the name. I was thinking WTF is a Peaky Blinders.

The series is based on an actual family of gangsters in the late 1800's in post- WWI Birmingham, England.

The series will be moving into the Al Capone years next season, season 5.

I can't wait.

I keep seeing ads for the new season of All or Nothing on Amazon. This year it's going to be about college football, the Michigan Wolverines. As a former longtime resident of Ann Arbor (21 years) and as an alumni of UofM, I really hate all the emphasis on football. It's not what the town or the University is all about. Thank God.

In 2000, they put this garish halo up around the top of the stadium, with huge letters spelling out Michigan. I still remember my shock when I first saw it. Within months, it was taken down. Even football loving alum hated it. I know I am a snob, but we're way more than football. But I'm sure you'll never know that from this upcoming TV series.

Not nuts about Sarandon, but am keen on Penn and interested in the internal battle Sister Helen Prejean fought. And there are some great character actors in this film (R. Lee Ermey, Celia Weston, Lois Smith, Margo Martindale, Scott Wilson, the list goes on—no wonder this received fabulous reviews ... and rightly so).

Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up is one of my favorites as is the one with Burgess Meredith Time Enough at Last.

I don't think I’ve seen that one. I saw the episode “Time Enough at Last” where Meredith suddenly finds himself alone in the world and I like that one a lot.

One of my favorites is “The Invaders” with Agnes Moorehead where she’s pretty much acting alone, says few (if any) words, and has some unexpected visitors. So good.

Rod Serling was something else.
