otherwise known as NANOWRIMO
The basics of it is that on November 1st you start writing a novel. On November 30th you stop writing.
You can not edit, doubt yourself, or otherwise stunt or sabotage your success.
Lots of details here:
http://www.nanowrimo.org/en
You can buddy up with pals on the website and share snippits of your work, share your current word count, cheer each other on, etc.
It's fun!

I may try it again. I've participated before and gotten overwhelmed with work. As it happens I'm in the midst of writing a technical certification book.

I did this a few years ago and actually successfully finished a children's fantasy novel (which I still need to go back and edit and polish a bit).
It's so tempting...and I also know I have a tremendous amount going on in my life in November....and I've also been threatening to write a non-fiction book for ages now.....
Ughhhhh......I'm a maybe. I'll let you know before November 1. :)

I have done this to some degree almost every year for the last 5 or 6 years.
This year, I am dealing with a full-time workload, a full-time school load, and this site but I think I am going to try to squeeze in some time to write and do this project again. I'll start it knowing that I might not complete it but I wanted to get back into the habit of writing a little bit every day anyway.
I am medusagoddess over there!

Yeah, last year my world got a little blown to pieces in November and I only got halfway through.
This year November is wicked busy but I'm going to dig in anyway. I'll sleep in December.
I'm tamalamadingdong over there.

I took part and completed last year. I started with one book, and it morphed into 4 that I didn't finish this year with everything else I had going on.
I am pretty sure I am going to take part again this year.
1500 new words a day seems a bit daunting right this moment but even if I don't complete it would get me back to daily writing.

I am all signed up and ready to go.
I have an outline and some character outlines prepared.
I still have a lot going on as I am moving cities next week, but I am going to do my best to complete again this year. I figure even if I don't finish I am that much farther along on my book.

this is the first year i actually don't have a ton of stuff going on so i could...possibly...do it. :D i'm thinking of doing it for a (don't judge me) fanfiction piece i've been wanting to write for a long time - i used to be an avid ff writer and dropped off due to busy-ness. but if i come up with a novel idea i like i might do that instead :)

FF is big business right now! That's how that 50 Shades thing started! Hey, as long as we are all writing and creating routine around carving out time for our creative ideas, it's a good thing!
Fascinating.....

Little under two weeks before we all disappear into our heads for a month...:typewriter:

Two days!!!
Also, if you register with NANO and get writing buddies, it does not mean you are sharing your work. It just means that you can cheer each other on with word counts. You can choose to share snippets of your writing but it's not required or assumed.

I have gotten 3 people at work to join in! We are going to try to carve out part of our lunch hours every day to write in a think tank together!

To be perfectly honest, the idea of writing a novel terrifies me, I've had an outline for one hanging around for years now, but I just don't have the, I wouldn't say patience or stamina, to write a novel in a month, but my health's not reliable enough to let me sit every day to write, otherwise I would give it a go.
So, good luck to all of you who are participating!
laruss
11-01-2012, 06:13 AM
Good Luck to everyone taking part this month.
I have my morning carved out to sit and write when I get back from the pool. I have a new wireless keyboard as I hate my keyboard on the laptop that I use for writing.
A minimum of 1667 words today.
I will try to write extra in the beginning in case I fall behind as the month progresses. Last year there were days I wrote 8000+ words and some days that I wrote none. I try not to break my flow if it is there.
Don't get discouraged if you can't get all the words out that you need. Even if you don't reach the 50,000 words you will still have written more then if you hadn't participated. Be kind to yourselves. It is good to have goals, but some is better then none.
Happy writing NaNoWriMo peeps.

Whoot! Happy NANO kick off day!
My day is packed, I have a feeling I won't get quiet writing time until late tonight- goal of 1500 words for day 1. I do the same Laruss, some days I just can't dig in, others I'll bang out 5-8,000 words and pull ahead. Just a matter of making that time happen every day and not stopping myself with doubt and criticism!

Welp. It's started..maybe this year I can actually finish it (it may be a nice break from the work book I've been working on and may help the writer's block I've had with it)

Hrmm.. Weird. I would put the Title at the end since, to me, it'd be a play on the content and not something specific. But good to know.

Now you've gotten me thinking about it. I haven't done any writing in a while, I'm afraid. I think that one of the things that happened was that I stopped feeling secure enough, and safe enough where I live, that I could sit down and write. I need to get back to this.
I am really having a hard time staying focused and making time to write. Not sure what the heck is wrong with me.
The email from the local NaNoWriMo group cracked me up today. Not sure if yall are getting the same emails or if the local groups craft their own pieces each day. Most likely its all the same email but I want to share a few clips that made me laugh and got me thinking about changing directions if that is what I decide that I want to do. Mostly, I am just writing for the sake of writing, but I see that many are trying to crank out something worthy of publication. Here are a few clips:
"Well, I am here to give you something that most wouldn’t give you in this situation. I am here to give you permission. TO CHANGE STORIES.
That’s right, I am telling you that if your story is simply too painful to continue, you have my permission to start a new one."
"Or if you don’t have another idea, explore the Nano forums – check out the “Adoption Society” for stray characters and ideas that need a good home"
"But no matter what you do, do not “kill the main character with a bus and continue with a new one,” or whatever creative story-saving advice you get from the first person to answer your “Help, I’m Stuck!” forum post. This is essentially writing the same story, the same story that is giving you so much trouble. You need a NEW story, so do yourself the favor, cut the old story off where it stands, and start a brand new one."

Luckily I have a house full of laptops.

Though my daughter's computer charger just broke and she's doing NANO as well and her new charger won't be here until next week (unless the computer geek dude across the street can fix it or has an odd replacement laying about) but likely I'll be sharing my computer for the next week. I hit 48464 Thursday night before midnight. I got up and wrote the prologue to the first book of a 3 part series; took a little over two hours, took a nap and then the last 500+ over about 4 hours this afternoon. Wow, wow, wow, what an experience!!! The hardest part was the start, and the finish.
I'm so freakin' excited. Now to keep on, edit, prepare for submission to... well... every freakin' where!

So happy to have found this thread!
I made my word count, and came skidding across the finish line at month's end with just over 54,000 words! It was quite literally a month of madness! Being in that creative energy was great! I still need to finish the story-- no ending in sight... the plot staggers from side to side like a gun shot victim on open seas , but there are *moments* that I really like, having revisited it just recently.
Anyone interested in giving some feedback? I could use a brave beta reader who wouldn't mind plowing through *ahem* creative grammar and a story line that was totally improvised! It's a speculative fiction piece :)
Congrats to all that finished! :) I'm absolutely going to try it again next year! :)

*bump bump* it's around the corner. And perhaps a series of short stories might be a good option for those starting out. The reason I mention that is Alice Munro, a Canadian author known for her anthologies of short stories, won the Nobel Prize for Literature. :)
once upon a time I started a book and even was told by Radclyffe that she wanted to see it when I finished alas I got stuck... but I have written some authors challenges, short stories so perhaps who knows

I have never been to a write-in but there is one this Saturday. It's 3 hours and I bet I can knock out a few thousand words in that time frame!
Good luck to you, Graffiti!! :hangloose:

Ugh, it's getting down to the wire isn't it. Last year I was dealing with my sleep studies again and saturation tests, so this year should be much more relaxed. My daughter is working on hers too, so when she comes home to see me during our mutual birthdays/thanksgiving week, we can work together. Since a lot of my illness revolves around stress issues, I haven't even put a lot of thought into it yet, I decided I'll just wait til it's time and then step up to the plate. I wish I could meet with the other writers around here, but getting out isn't easy at all, not by a long shot. Good luck to everyone else who is signed up and ready to go!

This is my first year not doing NANOWRIMO in a while. I'm a little sad about that. But I know I can't get it in this year... I'll be cheering you all on!

I'm doing it this year! Today is the day!
I am starting with an outline of 6800 words. To get to 50k, i need to add 1440 words each day.
My project is a paranormal romance, rated PG-13, in which it is explained how Santa Claus ends up living among the Elves.
There is a lot of mythology about St. Nicholas, but no elves are involved. There is a lot of mythology about Santa where he is surrounded by elves-- he is even described as an elf in "The Night Before Christmas-- but there is no mythology that bridges the gap between St. Nicholas the earthly priest and Santa the elven toymaker.
I will attempt to fill in that gap in the process of narrating the romance between Nicholas and Mrs. Claus, who is also an elf.
St. Nicholas was a celibate Priest, but then he got married? What happened to his vows? Is he no longer a Priest after joining the Elves? If he is still a Priest, does he attempt to convert the Elves? Is it possible for elves to be Christian???
All will be explained! :santa1:
