The Butch-Femme community is like sparkly lights and that gets me drawing. My goal is to capture the kaleidoscope of butch and femme expressions, the fun, the curious, the smexy  and most of all, the love :love1:. At first, I'm gonna stumble into things, but I'll get better!

Do you have a BF sketch request? Share your idea and I'll see if I can sketch it for you. It's not a toaster (http://www.butchfemmeplanet.com/forum/showpost.php?p=13781&postcount=42), but hey it's free! I also do commissions for those special occasions.

In the spirit of BFP, comments are always welcome :)

Enjoy!
Mika

Dabbling in the butch-femme dynamic. It feels kind of surreal.

PS. Most of the time, I'll use 'butch-femme' generically, like in "Butch Femme Planet", for simplicity.

It takes a lot to let myself draw a maid outfit, so this was a personal achievement.

A fine choice, M'lady. Interestingly, this theme just came up on this thread (http://www.butchfemmeplanet.com/forum/showthread.php?p=697208#post697208) too.

Thank you for the vote of confidence! I don't know how you read my mind, but comics is what I'd really like to do. However, I'm new to this genre. While I'm doing my best to educate myself about fellow butch-femmes and their extraordinary experiences and outlooks, there's so much to read and ponder on. It would be considerably faster to collaborate with someone who's already knowledgeable and has a story in mind. We could do comics or illustrated stories, both would be fun. If you or someone you know might be interested in doing a mini project, shoot me a PM!

I try to pace myself :)

Horses are majestic creatures, aren't they? I'll have a go, Miss Tia. Thank you for the suggestion.

And thank you for your kind words. I used to feel like a chameleon hopping from style to style. Perhaps it reflected my search for identity. In some curious way, I learn about life and things through drawing. And I do feel that I'm beginning to find myself.

I actually used art in therapy, Samarai. I use to be a children's therapist. I could tell when a child was breaking through by the progression of his or her art. Art doesnt come from the hand..it comes from the essense of someone.

I am thrilled you will attempt a BF horse drawing for me. I love horses and need them in my life. To me they represent love and freedom but most of all, self empowerment.

I am not entirely certain how it is that a person manages to create images of human beauty with that kind of... organic-ness, with both technical details and emotional signals being that spot-on, but I am very glad it is a thing that happens.

translation: holy shit your art is amazing. more of this kind of thing please

I'll also say that both the butches and the femmes look fantastic enough that I can't say for sure whether it's being drawn from the perspective of a butch gaze or a femme gaze. (Or, perhaps, another perspective entirely.) And that is a very good thing.

As for ideas, hmmm. You've posted images with a variety of themes already, from real-world to fantastical, so I'll pitch something out of left field. Something heroic or triumphant. Perhaps a strong young butch woman or girl who has just prevailed in a physical conflict, or one protecting her beloved?

That's fascinating. I once had a conversation about what it might mean between a child who colours well within the lines (eg in a colouring book), one who scribbles over the lines. Would be interested to hear your thoughts on that.

PS. Am currently working on the request pic.

Wow, thank you for your amazing words! I attempt to portray the characters in the light that they'd wish to be portrayed, to the best of my understanding. It's my way of respecting my bros and sises.

That is a totally awesome idea. I've wondered more than a few times if such themes have gone out of fashion. I'm glad it's not! I've also wondered how women.. mm, damsels... feel about it.

Samarai...it all depends on why they are coloring wherever they are coloring. Outside of the lines can be independence showing, creativity, or stubbornness, rebelliousness, or even a neurological disorder. It could mean they are exploring feelings or having too many feelings stuffed.

What I looked for was color selection, pressure, thickness of lines, movement and images freely formed subconsciously.

I always asked them their interpretation first, before I would examine it closer. I can see red as a color of anger and to the child, it could be a memory of the red blanket he carried around as a child and lost...which is tied into the grief now over losing his mother to alcoholism..(true story).

And for the record, almost all anger has a sense of loss attached to it. So sometimes even if they dont see the anger it there and sometimes its all about the blankie...

I had a child who would only color with greens. I gave him a box of crayons with no greens it and told him to draw me a picture. if you could have seen the torment on his face and how hard he processed this for such a long time...he simply could not do it without green. OCD. So I got finger paints and we explored putting colors together and seeing them change colors. Then we got water and food coloring..and he watched blue and yellow turn to green. By the time we were done with my therapy with him, he was using a couple more colors. Not all of them but lil steps is good. And not everyone has to use all the colors. In one culture, (I dont remember where) they only see three colors. Period. Shades of them but no other colors. So perceptions play a big part of it. If he had been older we would have explored this too. But I only had a few week with him...

I'm going to ask a question - what if anything makes this image queer other than we know it to be queer. While studying queer art sometimes all that made an image queer was the knowledge that the artist was queer (and there is nothing wrong with that) - other times there was a subtle tell - other times more obvious.

Your mileage may vary.

That's the great thing about art. It's entirely subjective.

This particular image, for me, is related directly to the artist and the medium she used to show it. But for some of the other images by the same artist, I see enough to let me know that the work, on its own, is Queer.

I really, really like this concept and approach to your drawings. I so often hear authors talk about how their characters in books would react to something or "what would character x do/think/feel" but I am trying to remember if I have ever heard a visual artist approach the subject like this. Maybe...I have no art degree so won't claim a broad knowledge. What I so often read about is the many visual artists stating they painted/drew the figure because they (artist) were trying to convey a thought/feeling/idea. Almost a voyeuristic experience with the subject which can sometimes leave the viewer feeling a coolness or almost clinical approach to the work. Your drawings are very engaging and seem (to me) intimate without being intrusive. Thank you so much for sharing these with us!

Oh...and agree with Sunshyne above...the dapper butch, pinup femme idea sounds fab!

I'm going to ask a question - what if anything makes this image queer other than we know it to be queer.

Fantastic question! I'm interested to know too.

From this artist's perspective...

When I first showed the pic to some non-queer friends, they jokingly said, "Huh, you're drawing normal guy-girl now... That one's a total dude." I said, "Yeah. I thought I liked femslash, turns out I'm just another sucker for good ol' fashioned romance... with a twist." It's been a challenge and a fascination to find that elusive balance of masculinity and femininity in BF art. For 'Beach Splash (http://i.minus.com/ibvwWfgQTgw44y.jpg)', as well as 'Evening Wear (http://i.minus.com/i1cuX1F6RfTRn.jpg)', my foremost inspiration was based on a femme sentiment I've read in a few threads discussing butch masculinity. It went along the lines of "Why butches? If you like masculine so much, why not go with guys," and the reply was, "Because they have all the traits I want in a man, and not the ones that I don't want." I've been pondering on what that might mean, and dabbled in it through art with varying degrees of success. A man... who's not a man. Am still pondering.

Perhaps that's the "essence" that Miss Tia referred to (http://www.butchfemmeplanet.com/forum/showpost.php?p=704669&postcount=22). When I feel a distance to the subject matter, and then try to force myself into the work, I end up drained afterwards. When I feel a connection though, it's a joy. So it's my pleasure to share the sketches here, and I also feel a lot less weird that I'm not the only one who likes them!

yes and it could have been used further into therapy too...such as aiding him to understand the concept of "blended" families such as his own. Kids are conceptual if they dont have language capabilities. They wont grasp the abstract of it until they are older than he was but the image remains and will be stored until it can be processed then..

You did post a solo femme image. Perhaps you could post a solo butch image with cues suggesting a conflict prior to the image (like still wiping blood from her mouth, or whatever), or the butch and the opponent she prevails over, or the butch and her steed--I could go on. The strong, heroic image of the butch is still present, but not necessarily alongside the portrayal of a disempowered femme.

In an image, my thoughts would be: standing/sitting up perfectly straight (because I think slouching takes away your power), chin tilted up a bit (almost snobby but not), heels (because it is me) and a hint of a smile.

Golly goshlings, your responses make me squee.

I made a couple of wallpapers for you:
http://i3.minus.com/jGvsfmyWJwrkF_xs.jpg

1600x1200 for Normal (squarish) screens (http://i.minus.com/ib0krdI2QVew8A.jpg)

1920x1200 for Widescreen (http://i.minus.com/iGvsfmyWJwrkF.jpg)

They might not fit perfectly, and you might have to stretch-proportionately to make it fit your screen resolution, but it should be better than the one I originally posted.

In an image, my thoughts would be: standing/sitting up perfectly straight (because I think slouching takes away your power), chin tilted up a bit (almost snobby but not), heels (because it is me) and a hint of a smile.

Just my $.02.

Letsee... check.. check.. I assure you she's wearing heels under that long dress!... and check. *whew* Thank you for confirming that I wasn't far off. I'd also be interested to hear thoughts on butches, yes please!

To me, it depends on the situation. When I am with mine, he "tends" to me like a gentleman would attend a lady. And I can assure you, he and I both know who runs the show ;)

It's a fascinating dynamic. I'm beginning to understand that both can freely express who they are, and fully appreciate who the other is, while remaining empowered. Thank you for sharing!

That's cute to say SB. I'd like to also point out another reason i love this....

The femme is in the drivers seat, not the "back seat", so to speak, the butch better hold on...it's a wild ride!!!!

SW, do you sell the prints?

That's a good place for her to be so the Butch can wrap hys/her arms around her and... other things.

lol I'm getting the drift that femmes are quite the force to be reckoned with. It makes me happy to no end, as I have been grappling with female empowerment.

I'm looking into prints, though it might take a while to organise, I hope you don't mind. I'd probably want to ask for input into that later, such as what sizes, and whether people prefer the larger and cheaper poster-quality prints or the smaller and more expensive photo-quality art prints, etc.

That's a good place for her to be so the Butch can wrap hys/her arms around her and... other things.

I see it as a mutually agreeable arrangement, yep ;)

That's good to know, thank you. I'll be looking into it. How about a 11 x 17 poster? Posters would be cheaper than an art print, but would it be too big?

I hope everyone had a nice break and wonderful celebrations with loved ones. Even if it was a quiet event, I hope you feel rejuvenated and refreshed for a new year!

I had been working through some personal things and pulled through to do more art-ing again. Felt sentimental, so came up with this. I've also been looking into having a more proper gallery with prints available, so hopefully that'll get rollin' soon. Thanks for your patience! Enjoy :)

PS. Ohyay 100 posts!

lol They will be art prints, but I'll aim to offer a variety of sizes. I'll see what I can do about the tagline ;)

However you choose to celebrate or not this day, here's my first attempt at the request for a dapper butch with pin-up femme pic.

I apologise for the tardiness. I was fumbling with learning about pin-ups, and along with some other things throwing my schedule out of whack, this pic took way long. I really don't know how well this turned out, so any feedback and suggestions would be most appreciated. PMs are welcome too.

Have a good day!

It's one of the things I was iffy about. Those were the kinds of pin-up art I saw, so I was thinking "contrast"?... *scratches head* Not sure if this was the kind of thing people were thinking of.

Do you like it? Does it work for you? I realize the nature of this thread but it's YOUR work. Your opinion is the only one that matters.

For the record, I like it. The femme isn't what I normally think of when I think of 'pin up' but I do like it. It's like a moment caught when the butch comes home after work and is greeted by his/her counterpart, who has prepared a romantic and/or naughty evening for them. That's how I read it, anyway. Others will read it differently.

Thank you for the idea setting :) While it's not how I'd think to depict a femme with a butch in suits, I wanted to give it a shot to broaden my understanding of the BF dynamics. eg How do femmes like to be depicted? Folks sounded excited about the idea too, so I wanted to get it right. Don't think I did though.

Overall, I'm greatly enjoying drawing BF themes, hence I'm open to ideas and suggestions.

She's definitely pin-up in the get-up. The pose is also pin-up. I think the whole concept of pin-up is provocative, come-hither, sex kitten. They are meant to be morale boosters for men (if I remember correctly.) They were also meant to sell things. We have pin-ups to this day in the likes of mechanics calendars with scantily clad women draped over things.

I like this also for the D/s energy because that appeals to me. With hys hands on his belt buckle, you know hys clothing is not going to stay on for long. :D
