The Twinkie/wonderbread factory is 5 mins from my house.
They are going to liquidate the brands, I'm sure someone is going to by twinkies and the other product lines.
I'll miss driving by on a Sunday morning and smelling the baking of the breads.
Never cared much for the twinkie stuff. But do like the Home Pride bread.
Seeing they are selling the brands off, some of the product line should come back.
I'm wondering if the unions (300 different labor contracts?) were hoping the companies deadline of returning to work last night was a bluff. Big risk to take.
So 18,500 more jobs lost. And, an untold number of retirees who will be losing, at minimum, their monthly retirement income, and perhaps health benefits.
Is a major bummer all around.

It was my childhood. My dad had a bread route for the west coast brand. He then had an outlet store with routes running from there. I dressed as Snoopy one weekend to help promote Ding Dongs. He paid me good! At home, our freezer was full of bread and treats. I was the go to friend, lol. Wow, this is sad.
Looking around for some other cream filled treats....

I agree.
The Ladies of the Outlet and their Drivers said they are pissed at
a particular group of staff folks that apparently 'would not back
off for 3 months' and that the result is all 18,000 employees
went down. This was their own personal words.
(w)
But.
We all know how most Corporations are.

And I just would like to see someone come in a keep the Brand
alive and re-open and run the operation proper like.

I have not read anything on this but, this has to be a profitable operation no?
Flour, sugar...we are not talking about expensive ingredients here. What broke down?
I bet another company picks this one up. Give it a week or two. When there is a public outcry over a national favorite brand, smart business people listen.

Profitable no. Hostess filed for bankruptcy in January, its second trip to bankruptcy court since 2004. It previously emerged from restructuring in 2009 after a four-and-a-half year process.
Reportedly, they tried to sell the company outright but there were no takers. Presume the union contracts played into it.
Now they are petitioning the bankruptcy court to liquidate assets i.e. sell the brands to other companies which have expressed an interest in them.

Happy day Dapper. Krimpets are made by Tastycake.
I had to double-check on line and it does not look like the Tastycake company is owned by Hostess.
I loved Tastycake Krimpets and Kandy Kakes as a kid. Kandy Kakes are the yellow cake topped with peanut butter and the whole thing covered in chocolate.
Good thing I would actually have to get dressed and go to the store to get them right now.
I hope I don't start fixating about them.

A lot of people don't take the time to bake, T-Rex, but there are still some that do. Trust me, a fresh-baked loaf of bread, still warm, still gets a lot of appreciation, in a household. It does take time, however, to make bread, and other baked products.

People don't bake anymore.
I think that's sadder than losing a bunch of crap that's chock full or corn syrup, preservatives and dyes.
Ah my Mommy bakes all the time! The sadness for me is remembering being a kid in the 70s and getting a Ho Ho in my lunch box. Good times! I think the whole unhealthy thing is what did Hostess in. My kid has never had any of them except for one box of Twinkies we bought because I told her how I loved them when I was pregnant with her. Did not eat them before or after but I craved them when I was pregnant. With strawberries!

Really though, I haven't had any of these baked goods in years since they are so horrible for you. I just am sad about the end of an era. Plus, my childhood dog was named Twinkie (actually she wasn't named AFTER the Twinkie, but it still was her name).
I have had one or two Kandy Kakes in the last 5 years or so, and fortunately they are made by TastyKakes.

MoonPies are made by Chattanooga Bakery and as far I can tell from my Google search Hostess is not their owner just a competitor...
Tis true, although their Distributorship was entangled along with many
other smaller brand names in order to beef the deliveries and in
turn...the Outlets were then delivered those products by the
drivers once those products rendered the end of their
'grocery store' shelf life and will get their last chance
to be eaten thru the Outlets.
Some of those smaller brands will suffer without
the distribution center powers of the late Hostess brand.
:candle:
I wanted to add that I do not condone the practices of Big Company
mentality, not at all. If you're gonna run an American icon
Company like a buncha cream filled Asshats, eventually
you're going to be exposed for it and your shelf life
will...expire. There are still many good people
with the monetary means to pick up where
they expired and renew the Brands
and run the Company all proper.
I'm a Dreamer like that.
:moonstars:
I was reading something yesterday that pointed towards conversation
the Ladies of the Outlet were having over the inner company
animosity toward 'some' of the employees who they said
would not '...just back off a bit'. That made sense to
me when I read this part from CNN Money pages:
At least 5,000 of the laid-off workers worked in food production and were represented by the Bakers Union.
Related: The end of Hostess
Nationwide, the entire food manufacturing industry has yet to gain back all the jobs lost in the recession, but the industry has been adding about 1,400 jobs a month over the last year.
Another 6,700 Hostess workers were represented by the Teamsters, a union that was sharply critical of the Bakers' decision to strike. Those jobs largely include truckers, many who both transported and sold Hostess products.
It's just sad, but I do believe this Brand may be strong enough to
garner the sympathies of some Philanthropic genius who grew
up on Zingers and still secretly bought and stashed
Twinkies for the Zombiepocalypse.

:daywalker:
They started out back in 1930, an era when people actually paid attention to seasonality in foods.
James A. Dewar, who worked at Hostess predecessor Continental Baking Company in Schiller, Ill., wanted to find a way to use the bakery's shortbread pans year round. The shortbread was filled with strawberries, but strawberries were only available for a few weeks a year.
So he used the oblong pans to bake spongecakes, which he then filled with banana cream. Bananas were a more regular crop.
Twinkies once contained real fruit. Twinkies were created because of seasonality.
Then, World War II hit and rationing meant — say it with me — Yes! We have no bananas. And so was born the vanilla cream Twinkie, which was vastly more popular anyway.
Even then, there was a crafted element to these treats. The filling was added by hand using a foot pedal-powered pump. Pump too hard and the Twinkies exploded.
It was around this time that American food culture did an about face. It was an era when the industrialization and processing of cheap food wasn't just desired, it was glorified. Cans and chemicals could set you free.
Twinkies are the prototypical indestructible junk food. It was the sort of height to which American technological ingenuity could go to create a product that was almost entirely artificial, but gave the appearance of eclairs."
When Twinkies signed on as a sponsor of the "Howdy Doody" show during the 1950s, their cultural legacy was sealed. Taglines such as "The snacks with a snack in the middle" began etching themselves into generations of young minds and it was considered perfectly fine that Twinkie the Kid would lasso and drag children before stuffing his sugar bombs in their faces.
Sure, not all the attention was positive. Somewhere along the line, Twinkies became the butt of jokes, mostly about their perceived longevity (though Hostess staunchly maintains 25 days is the max). And not all associations were great. The so-called "Twinkie defense" came out of the 1979 murder trial of Dan White, whose lawyers included his junk food obsession among the evidence of his supposed altered state of mind.
Then something happened. Suddenly, Americans who for decades had been tone deaf to how food was produced suddenly started paying attention. Suddenly, products, that had so prospered by their artificiality, lost their allure. Even Hostess, has acknowledged that consumer concern about health and food quality changed the game.

Even if they freeze, at a certain point, if everyone eats them: they will all be gone.
I have an vision of people all across America (the globe?) gorging themselves on Twinkies right about now.
What will state fairs do without Twinkies to deep fry?
The mind wanders...

Not to put a sick twist on this whole thing but did anyone notice that Dan White of the famous "Twinkie Defense" only lived to be 39 years old?
Wonder what that says about his Twinkie diet.
In a bizarre twist of fate the date of his death, not the year, is the same date
Oct 21st, that was named "Leslie Feinberg day in San Francisco (2007)
Just some random data that popped into my over caffeinated brain.

Turkey Stuffed With Twinkies Is, In Fact, An Actual Recipe From The 'Twinkies Cookbook'
There is an infinite number of recipes and iterations for turkey and stuffing. We can appreciate a new twist on a classic, but the recipe for "Twinkling Turkey" from the Twinkies Cookbook has us a bit wary.
In the recipe below, the cake part of the Twinkie is used as a stuffing ingredient while the cream filling becomes a sauce for turkey. For the stuffing, Twinkies and a Hostess corn muffin mix are combined with diced apple and stuffed into the bird. For the sauce, the cream filling is combined with honey and brushed on the turkey during the last fifteen minutes of roasting. Sure, it's a creative use of a Twinkie, but creativity doesn't always translate into tastiness. See the full recipe after the poll.
Quick Poll
Would you eat Twinkling Turkey?
Yes, anything made with Twinkies deserves to be eaten.
No way, Twinkies do not belong in stuffing.
I'm not sure.
Twinkling Turkey (serves 15 to 20)
Ingredients
1 (8 1/2 ounce) package yellow corn muffin mix, prepared and baked according to package instructions
6 Twinkies halves lengthwise
1 (14-18-pound) turkey
1 tart apple, peeled, cored and diced
1/4 cup honey
Instructions
Remove the muffins from the oven and allow to cool on a wire rack. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Scrape the creme-filling out of the Twinkies with a small spoon and reserve in small bowl.
Cut the Twinkie pastry into cubes and spread in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake for 8 – 10 minutes, until lightly toasted. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely. Decrease the oven temperature to 325 degrees.
Rinse the turkey. Crumble muffins into a bowl, add the apple and toasted Twinkies and mix lightly. Loosely stuff the mixture into the turkey and truss the legs. Place the turkey, breast side up, on a rack set in a roasting pan. Roast the turkey for 12 to 15 minutes per pound, until the thigh temperature reaches 175 degrees to 180 degrees and the juices run clear.
In a small bowl, combine the honey with the reserved creme filling and mix well. Brush the turkey with the honey mixture during the last ten to fifteen minutes of roasting time.
Remove the turkey from the oven and let stand for 20 minutes before carving.

Okay so I thought I would be okay reverting back to Drake's cakes.. you know .. devil dogs... ring dings...yankee doodles... etc.. I had those more as a kid because we lived on the east coast. Now I find out that hostess owns them and they are closing down as well!!! This is a serious bummer for today because of a memory.. way back in the day.. my dad had a CB radio.. remember those?? His handle was devil dog.. so, being the little kid that I was.. I was the devil dog jr., I would walk around with my walkie talkie and could actually get some cbs on it from time to time.
Ah well... RIP Drakes Cakes

I think perhpas if the CEO and the other corporate executives had not given themselves massive raises during their first and second bankruptcy filings..twinkies would not have to worry about extinction. However, considering the shelf life of twinkies and the number of them ensconced in Time capsules I would say they will be around one more millennium!

(Reuters) - Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Wonder Bread may soon be back in stores after a bankruptcy court judge on Tuesday approved sales of several iconic brands that had been owned by the failed Hostess Brands Inc.
Buyout firms Apollo Global Management and Metropoulos & Co teamed up for Hostess's snack cake brands, paying $410 million for Twinkies, Ho Hos, Ding Dongs and Donnettes.
Flowers Food Inc , which makes Tastykakes snacks, picked up most of Hostess's bread business, including its Wonder and Nature's Pride brands for $360 million. The No. 2 U.S. baking company also bought 20 bakeries and other operations.
The Beefsteak brand of bread was sold for $31.9 million to Mexico's Grupo Bimbo S.A.B. de C.V. , the world's largest bread maker. Bimbo already owns Entenmann's cakes, Arnold bread and Thomas' English Muffins.
Hostess also said on Tuesday that United States Bakery had the winning bid in the March 15 auction for its remaining bread brands: Eddy's, Standish Farms and Grandma Emilie's. United States Bakery agreed to pay $30.9 million.
Hostess filed for bankruptcy last year and gave up on its plans to emerge from bankruptcy in November, blaming a strike by its bakers union for its failure to emerge from Chapter 11.
The bakers union said in a statement on Tuesday its members would be "indispensable partners" in restarting the former Hostess facilities and getting the products back into stores.
The money raised from the sales will be used to pay off Hostess's creditors, which the company said totaled $1.43 billion when it filed for bankruptcy.
Hostess will return to court on April 9 to ask U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Robert Drain to approve the sale to United States Bakery and a separate sale of its line of Drake's snacks. Drake's Coffee Cake, Ring Dings and Devil Dogs were sold to McKee Foods Corp for $27.5 million.
