I opened the bottom of a kleenex box, took some of the kleenex out, taped back inside enough of the bottom of the kleenex box to fit my gun under it, and put the kleenex back in on the top. It's safer to your keep your gun hidden where you fall asleep. Just sayin..

I have a table on each side of the bed. Each one has one of my mom's bridge napkins from the sixties (corny floral pattern, yellow and red), and a little Ikea lamp with a paper shade ($9.99!).
In addition, one side has:
Chartreuse candle on white ceramic base
Tiny digital alarm clock (not a radio, real simple)
Box of kleenex in wicker box cover
Little ceramic dish I got in Greece, with a lid
Pencil holder made out of a smooth stone
And the other side has:
Turquoise candle on same white ceramic base
Books
Cell phone
Another little dish from Greece
Multi-colored, striped coaster
This thread is funny, so intimate and yet in my case, not so much ;)

The 5 people on this short thread who mentioned they have guns next to their bed, are all of you serious?
I guess since the whole "having the gun at the ready", is so far outside of my experience, I sometimes wonder if people are just pulling our legs and I am the only one who doesn't know this.
No judgement, it just really throws me when I read things like this.
So, was anybody kidding (maybe you, Clay?)?

Kind of scary huh?
I keep a shot gun inside my closet but not next to bed. My dogs would first raise hell and then I would.

Two oak bedside tables, one on each side of queen sized firm bed in my bedroom (deep, dark blue walls w/ white trim, light blue curtains, white and light blue linens). Uncluttered style (a few vintage pieces mixed with modern).
On "my" bedside table there is:
• Modern chrome lamp
• Cork coaster (and occasionally a glass of water)
• Mauve Italian glass bowl (vintage -- was my Gma's) in shape of sea shell
• Blackberry
• Huge stash of perfume and cologne samples (inside drawer) I'll never use which were nabbed from Barney's a couple years ago on Christmas eve when I needed something to do since I was by myself that holiday
• Notepad and pencil (inside drawer)
• Occasionally my iPad finds its way here
• Something personal (inside drawer) ;)
On the opposite bedside table there is:
• Modern chrome lamp (different than other)
• Box of kleenex in decorative chrome cozy
• Small mauve art deco planter (bottom shelf)

On my nightstand..
Cute white lamp
Landline phone
Cute white frame with a picture of my mom's garden
Crystal ring holder, only one ring, various other things including clips and o rings (:/)
Small Waterford table clock, never has worked, I inherited it, it's sparkly
Vase with one single white silk hyacinth
A Caribbean island scented candle
Remote control is under the pillow
The house is secured within the security gates ( I hope) and the house alarm would scare the crap out of everyone, including me! So no gun over here.

Hmm....never really thought about the gun thing. I grew up with a grandma who wore a garter gun. I also have 2 guns on top of the china cabinet in the dining room, another revolver in my closet (which I usually forget about and falls on my head when I'm trying to reach for stuff), and a gun safe with rifles and shotguns, along with the antique weaponry that has been passed down to me. For me, I think it's just how I was raised. *shrug*

I like the table free from crap. I'm not a stuff person. My laptop is my stereo and my tv as well as my computer. I like everything to fit into one load of a minivan.
Granted, now that I've got my furniture back, that's not possible. but having learned to live without "stuff" the last 10 years, I really can't see the point in much of it. I've got nothing worth stealing except my laptop and my phone. I rather like it that way.

Notes to self;
Use caution when planning surprise visit to those who list both "firearms" and "glasses" in case of a "shoot first, put glasses on later" policy.
Decide if I am in a "carrot or stick" mood when visiting those with both treats/cookies next to tasers/knives/teargas, etc.
Srsly. debating on pros/cons of mustard vs. choclate in the bedroom.....
Katniss~~(feeling ashamed my tables are so lacking in interest compared to rest of planet...*sigh*)

Oh yeah and I forgot to add ... next to the Ikea lamp with the paper shade on my night table there's my Glock 19, my LadySmith Revolver (it's corny but I like corny), my Baretta 92F, my pretty little Ruger, my 38 Special (that was actually my first), my Taurus Small Frame Revolver, my sweet little S&W M37, my Kahr K9, my heavily customized Kahr E9 (which is starting to bore me), my Taurus PT111 (I just keep it for nostalgic reasons), my EG Makarov, and my good old Glock 27.
Okay just kidding. I don't have a gun, though I grew up visiting my grandparents' farms and ranches where everyone had rifles, because they needed them for taking care of wild things that might menace the chickens or calves. And then my parents had guns, and I think my sister does, but I'm not sure. Oh and I had a lover who had a rifle, and she kept it on the floor by the mattress in a cabin we slept in sometimes upstate.
I think I'm processing how it feels to learn so many people here on the Planet say they have guns.
So I tried saying it too to see how it felt, and kind of rolled the gun talk around in my mouth and played with it, which is of course a silly thing to do. I'll never get a gun, but I do like the vocabulary of small arms.

hahahahaha SSSHHHHHH. What are you trying to say ?
The 5 people on this short thread who mentioned they have guns next to their bed, are all of you serious?
I guess since the whole "having the gun at the ready", is so far outside of my experience, I sometimes wonder if people are just pulling our legs and I am the only one who doesn't know this.
No judgement, it just really throws me when I read things like this.
So, was anybody kidding (maybe you, Clay?)?

I find it quite shocking as well.
That isn't a judgement about anyone owning a gun.
Guns aren't a part of my daily existence.
I am shocked so many people have them lying about on their bedside tables.
Because they're not a part of my culture, the casualness of having a gun about is foreign to me.
I had no idea one would leave one's loaded weapon out and about. :|
And I may be a little scared of you all now .... ... ;)

It seemed as though quite a few people have theirs out and about; but perhaps I misunderstood.
Thank you for your concern about me not having one. :)
I can't imagine having one - because I've never had one, no one in my family has guns (beyond hunting rifles), and I live in a region that is very low crime and gun crime is practically non-existent. I can't imagine a circumstance where I would need a gun. And I am grateful for that.
It's really fascinating to me, how different our experiences and expectations around guns are, I'm quite interested in understanding that actually. But I won't hijack deb's thread with a further digression - I'll have a think about it and maybe start a separate thread.

Miss Sparkle,
I mean you no disrespect in any way shape or form... but I'd like to state that for me there is nothing casual at all about gun ownership. Unfortunately the wackadoodles who make the news often give all gun owners a bad name.
Also, an unloaded gun is equivalent to no gun at all. After all, what is a bow without an arrow?

I opened the bottom of a kleenex box, took some of the kleenex out, taped back inside enough of the bottom of the kleenex box to fit my gun under it, and put the kleenex back in on the top. It's safer to your keep your gun hidden where you fall asleep. Just sayin..
My G19 sits on the table with a full clip next to it- not actually loaded while I sleep. My room is upstairs in a creaky ass old house with a dog downstairs so I'd have time to wake up fully before I would need to use it. And I don't leave it at home when I'm not here- not in this neighborhood ;) interesting to see how many gun owners there are in this thread...

Ok, my side...
~ My cell & charger
~ Three candles b/c I like falling asleep to the flickering of candles
~ A half dozen stuffed animals ranging from the only one left from my childhood to the black teddy bear that wears the collar used in the collaring ceremony between Riley & I (the maker sent the wrong one so we used it then ordered the replacement)
~ A few crystals chosen for various qualities (protection, clarity and whatever I feel I want/need)
The other side...
~ The alarm clock (yes, I need it and the phone)
~ A small fan
~ The nightlight that I call "the carousel" b/c it projects lights through a crystal while the base spins; it makes the walls and ceiling pretty.
~ Massage oil (not lube which lives in the drawers).
And, if you want to know what is in the drawers, you have to ask. And don't say that I did not warn you - lol. I laugh only b/c I know how not-warning-worthy those items are ;)

Yo, Jaggster. Some of us come from places/cultures that just don't do guns. I've lived an a couple of countries, none of them were gun cultures. Even the cops in some of them didn't have guns.
I lived in very *very* tough neighbourhoods (one nicknamed "crackney") in one of those countries. I wasn't scared. I wasn't brought up to be scared. I'm not scared of strangers or being robbed or raped or... whatever. I'm just not. I don't feel I ever needed one, no matter how dangerous the situation - I never, ever, have ever thought "I wish I had a gun with me, I'd feel safer." because it's never occurred to me, nor would I want to.
I'm very confident of handling others when things get tricksey. I've been in situations with a large group of 18 year old hoodie boys and a tense "is this where a gay bash happens" and no, the thought of a gun didn't cross my mind. However we both knew the psyche of such a situation and kept our nerve and cool. Nothing happened save one bloke kicked me in the ass, then I spun and kicked him back showing zero fear. And walked on.
I've been in much worse situations.
None of the times I was raped was with strangers. None of the times I was robbed was by people I didn't know. My mom got robbed the other night - the car broken into - she banged on the window and pointed to her eye and then to him. He ran.
She never thought of a gun. No ever thought of getting one. Not even after getting her arm broken many years ago.
It's just to many of us, "gun" is not in our culture or background or vocabulary or even our thoughts. So it seems very foreign to read it. Extremely foreign. Like on another planet. I've seen hunting rifles. being used for hunting and being kept at a club or locked in a heavy duty locker in an out-house (kind of like a garage but no car).
Never actually seen a hand gun in my life. Most of my friends haven't either.
it's just a completely different way of being. And we aren't afraid from lack of gun, so I assure, you, there is no need to be afraid for us :)

I have to say I do not have a gun, I am a Canadian, we don't need guns. I know some Canadians who have them, but we also have laws about gun cases and such so they would never (legally) be beside the bed.
I would also never be in a bed that had one in or on the nightstand, In fact I don't even like the idea of being in a home that has guns in a a gun case. I guess having one put in your face when younger and being threatened with death will do that to you.

I want to echo all of these sentiments.
I am glad to see that others chimed in to my original post saying this was completely outside of my frame of reference. I thought maybe I was the only one.
I am not sure I have even seen a hunting rifle (maybe as a kid, as my grandfather hunted?), and I am certain I have never seen a handgun.
I considered putting up a poll and/or thread about who has unlocked hand guns. To be honest, perhaps more exposing of my thoughts than usual around here...I actually don't want to know the answer to this question. Unnecessary or not, I have carried with me worry for each of the members here who have mentioned having a handgun at the ready, and don't want to add more of you to the list.
However, I am sure that just like the non hand gun owners (or those who do not have their hand guns available to shoot an intruder in the middle of the night), would tell me not to worry, and that their gun makes them feel safer. I personally would feel unsafe with a gun next to my bed.

No, it's not just you. I mainly talk with people in the UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, Holland and Greece. Guns aren't part of their cultures however canada/australia people have hunting rifles. The upper class in the UK have hunting rifles if they "go on a shoot" but you have to be pretty damn upper class for that.
So I never, ever hear them even mentioned. Haven't really hung around american boards much past few years so just kinda forgot about that concept. So yeah, it was a bit "oh yeah." to read it - sort of like having a distant cousin that talks about raising ostriches for meat. Outside of experience by a landslide.

Even as an American from a working class family that hunted, having fire arms for personal protection purposes is *far far* outside of my experience.
I'm genuinely interested in other peoples' experiences and in understanding the cultural differences that define either side of the issue. I am working on a thread on the topic, in a survey type format, to be posted later when I'm not at work.
for me it is a part of who I am and what I do as a cop I put people in jail they do not always like it and it really ain't hard to find where we live my off duty weapon is at close hand but not just laying about, also when I am at work I want to be sure Desd is safe my dad was a cop and I remember a person he had arrested came to our hose when I was bout 11 I was the only one home I hid under the bed with his service weapon

These things include, but are not limited to:
when I am sleeping, my cell with alarm set
my glasses, when I am sleeping
bottled water and its crystal coaster
decorative box of tissues (current one has brightly colored flowers on each panel)
beachside margarita candle
a lovely glass figurine that glows in the dark
a doll passed down to me from my stepmom
a handmade card from a San Antonio coworker/friend
a framed picture of a beautiful sunset by our very own dee_girl
a couple of decorative boxes with miscellaneous stuff inside
a plastic rectangular box that has butterflies in it
a stuffed bear
a framed picture of my mom and me
some etched rocks
a small Mississippi themed paperweight
a select bunch of my books, mostly erotica but some artistic ones as well
the remainder of the crystal coaster set
a framed 'intimate' picture of myself, taken from a professional sitting I won on the radio years ago
a deck of sassy Tarot cards a friend gave me
a manual back massager (the four pronged type that fits in the palm of your hand)
a glittery purple skull because I have yet to pack him away
a dream journal
the box with Willow Anastacia's ashes
a bear that can be heated in the microwave and used as a heating pad
propped up on the back of the bookcase because I haven't decided whether to frame it or not and where to put it, is a delicous print of Alice from Alice in Wonderland
THIS (http://pinterest.com/pin/97812623128356026/) very one, actually.

My bedside table is a two tiered bookcase, so there are many things on it.

Now that I HAVE one again..... :)
Vaseline for my feet, baby oil for my skin, I bought a lamp for it finally, and then I will have whichever book I am reading on it also. Typically I have a hair tie and my cell phone on it too...at least when I am in bed...
Lamp
2 tokens of love/memory from my butch that hang off the lamp
Charger for my phone (Phone when I'm sleeping)
Charger for my ipad (usually the ipad ends up in the bed with me as I fall asleep reading 99% of the time)
Dock for my phone, that doesn't charge it but still makes the music sound great.
Reading glasses (also usually end up somewhere in the covers)
Coaster
Picture of Her & I on Easter Sunday 2011
Tissues
A ceramic cat print from my cat who passed away 2 months ago.

a framed picture of C and I on one of our first dates, a bottle of water, and my glasses.
Also, at C's house she thoughtfully placed a bedside table next to the bed on the side I sleep on so I have a safe place to place my glasses, bottle of water, and my cell phone. During the early months of our relationship, I resorted to the pile of motorcycle helmets that she stored on that side of the bed. :)

I've heard it said you can tell alot about a person by what they have in their medicine cabinet. Perhaps the same goes for ones night table
Due to the weird configration of my room, my night table is too far from my bed to serve the function it was designed for. Items i need have moved to my bed. nothing too interesting.(water bottles ,tv remotes, cell phone, brush, suitcase, key fob, laptop, box cutter)

We don't have a bedside table as we like our mattress on our wooden floor (think Japanese style) so it'd be more like bedside space lol I have an assortment of books I'm reading - I like to read 2-3 books at a time, currently I have Me Talk Pretty One Day, Naked, and 2008 Lesbian Erotica, our mobile phones, a (empty) glass of water, TV remote, iPod shuffle, speakers, 2 pairs of eyeglasses (we both wear 'em) a candy/chocolate bar, ashtray, lighter and cigarettes.

I've given up my student digs and am in my own home. However, it now looks much like my student bedroom! On top of 1/2 of double long computer desk is a lamp, index cards, severAl packs of post-it notes, phone charger, a mug of pens, a mug of pencils and another of erasers, paintbrushes, Sharpies and a flag. On the other half is a set of Oxford reference books (even though i know it is easier to find this stuff online), my study buddy (a sock monkey Easter basket), a package of scented tea lights, craft supplies for the ATC exchange, and a huge pile of books I want to read over the summer.

SO MUCH F**ING STUFF!!!
I love to read and write and draw before I go to bed so my bedside table, which is a almost a real table with several pockets under, is completely overrun by the several books I read at the same time and all the different writing and drawing and comics things I'm trying to work on. It is literally bursting, there are stacks that tend to fall over, but my bookshelves are full and I dont have anymore room in the boxes of books I have under my bed. Sometimes I wonder if I may have too many books, but then I realize no, there is no such thing as too many books.
I also think I may have an alarmclock there... somewhere.

My bedroom furniture is not the same anymore because I threw out some really old stuff and replaced it with better, older stuff.
But the table I keep near the bed is now home to various pictures of my Sugar-Honey-Bear's daughter, pictures of my daughter and my two sons, and a picture of yours truly with Yours Truly; then a small keepsake milk-glass dish with spare sets of keys to his house, barn and truck, and a set of building maps (?) for a place we are thinking about that might be an interesting place to own, maybe, in the future (it's down the road, a spell).
And.... a flashlight and an old pair of antique binoculars (he gave them to me for my birthday, recently).

I bought a new notebook recently to record my blood pressure readings, so that's close by. As well as an old ceramic cup, which I keep an supply of pens, pencils and what-not's like emery boards, tweezers and crochet hooks. Nail polish, bottle of aspirin, tiny bottle of organic lavender oil, face and hand lotion (Hempz, new Sugared Grapefruit, it smells lovely). Ear buds, a stack of books, and a glass of water. Kleenex, too. And my alarm clock, heart monitor and a bunch of leis from Hawaii, are draped on my torchiére lamp. :moonstars:

Wow it's good thing that we don't share a bedroom! I have several books on my bedside table as well as my journal, some hand lotion and prayer beads, my OA books, my CD player, and a lamp. :)

PLUS no doubt I'd find doilies. A lacy duvet/and or a flowery bedspread, and TONS and TONS of those useless throw pillows...why I'd have to start getting ready for bed at least an half hour early JUST to clear them off the bed alone!
Don't even get me started on those knickknacks you femmes love to strew around the joint.;;;....:seeingstars:

Do you really????
I was only guessing that Tony the Tiger would match you fairly well..... but if you do, then wow, what kind of luck was that?
That's pretty amazing, if you do!
Btw, my bedroom is very cute, tidy and neat!
So much so, that my apartment is shown every time to prospective agencies when they visit this property.
I take pride in making my home look comfortable and it's true that it's very clean, neat and organized!
And.... I don't blame you for not liking doillies... I like vintage table clothes and scarves for dressers, but I prefer subtle lighting and soft colors. Nicely kept environment free of too much of anything, is my kind of style. :hk28:
