Let's talk about bikes! What do you ride, and how long have you been riding? Is there a bike you've been lusting after? Are you a member of a club or motorcycle group? How did you learn to ride?

I started riding when I was a baby dyke in the Navy stationed in San Diego in 1992. I didnt want a car, so I bought an old 1982 Suzuki 450 and after the guy I bought it from sat in my driveway and explained to me how to work everything, I self-taught the rest of the way. I guess I figured since I already knew how to drive a stick, riding a bike should be a piece of cake.

I had that bike for maybe a year and it broke down so I bought another old bike, a 1982 Honday Magna 750 and rode that one for a few years while living first in San Diego and then up near Fresno (NAS Lemoore, CA) until about 1997 when I decided to move back to IL. I very sadly traded in my bike for a car and then didnt ride again until 2010.

In 2010 I decided it was time to start riding again and I got a Suzuki Marauder 800:

I rode that around for a couple of years - until this past fall when I decided that I shouldnt ride any longer because I no longer had the strength to hold it up & I miss her already. :(

If I can afford to get another one, it will be a trike so I can still ride but dont have to worry about holding the bike up, balance issues, etc. :winky:

I never joined any clubs, but I considered it - and my dream bike is a Harley Dyna Wide Glide - but again, I would need a trike at this point if I was going to continue to ride, so my new dream is something similar to this:

This weekend was the once a year International Motorcycle Show here in NYC. I always get so jazzed up, even when the show is just so-so. All the new models are on display, and you can sit on everything. I'm just bursting with thoughts about all things motorcycle related, so I decided to start a thread.

I ride a Yamaha '01 FZ1, an '04 R6, (track-only), and an EX500 as a spare street bike. I used to have a bunch more bikes in my backyard, some of which could have been coaxed into running with a little time and patience, but they were drowned under 6' of salt water in Hurricane Sandy. I'm thrilled that I saved the three running bikes.

I started riding in San Francisco in 1981. A friend taught me to ride in a parking lot, and I almost immediately took off for home, (NYC), on my first solo cross country ride. It was a glorious, circuitous amble up, down, and around the U.S. and Canada. Learning to ride a motorcycle was about the best thing I ever did for myself.

I'm a founding member of the Sirens Women's Motorcycle Club in NYC. We've led the NYC Pride Parade every year since 1987. I'm the founder of a political organisation that works for riders in New York. We work on issues such as rider safety, parking, lane-sharing legislation, etc. I'm also a track day devotee. That means we take our bikes to the racetrack and ride around all day just for fun and skills enhancement. (No racing allowed.) I'm a track day instructor for Fishtail Riding School.

The object of my lust right now is a BMW S100RR. It's got electronic everything. I don't understand any of it, and I don't care. I rode one at the track, and I've never looked so good. That bike made me ride like a superhero. I want one!

I have a Harley Sportster. i have had this bike for yearsss. yes, i want to get a new bike and get either a Dyna wide glide or softail deluxe. but, i have had this sportster for so long. i know this bike, i know how it handles and how it reacts. which to me, is very important.

i just moved south a couple years ago and the first year, i put more miles on my bike in 3 months then what i did in a full year when i lived up north. love the thought of firing up the bike in January!

dont belong in any clubs or anything like that. i like riding alone. i know if i want to turn somewhere, i just do it. i dont mind riding with someone else. but just not a big fan of riding with several people.

when i first started riding, i did take a riding course for three reasons . i figured that could teach me something that i would help me out and the company i worked for paid for the riding course and it also gave me a discount on my insurance for the bike. ( which that doesnt go in effect anymore ) the one thing that the course did teach me was how to prepare myself for trailing a passenger. they told me to put a big ole bad of dog food on the back, strap it down and that will help me get the feel of turning, riding the curves , it will help me feel the weight in the back. well, i did that once. i put the bag of dog food on the back, tied it down. and i was going through a neighborhood, riding slow speed and all of a sudden every freakin dog in the neighborhood was chasing me...i was like WTF? i am use to a dog or two, but this many??? i didnt know until i got home that they bag of dog food had gotten a hole in it and trails of dog food was dropping onto the street..LMAO. which is why i had sooo many dogs chasing me for food. LMAO.

I LOVE riding! i love the peace and quiet. i feel relaxed, well, when riding out in the country. now riding in the city or town....I am paying attn to every single move any vehicle makes. cant tell ya how many times i have had to swerve, slam on my brakes...just because ppl didnt see me. but, that has also taught me when i am driving my truck, that the bikes are out there...be aware and pay attn!

Above is an image of my exact bike (except mine was a gun metal grey with Navy metaflake insets on fenders. All else is exact same. Nice beefy cruiser....:).
I began riding in Atlanta in 1990...my first ride was a Honda 650..gold and black..lol.
In 2005 I began to ride again with my wife (who is now an angel..:)...)
We started the local chapter of W.O.W. (Women On Wheels (r)) which is a motorcycle group for women. Our Chapter was B.R.A.T.S. (Babes Riding Around the South). I was Chapter Director for our chapter from onset to dissolution in 2011. We held monthly meetings and then rode to many great destinations. We had 24 members.
A debilitating accident May 2006 left me with permanent disability, and inability to ride any more. BUT I still drove my "cage" and attended all meetings and went on all rides...:).
We rode in our local parades, raised money for many local charities, and made huge donations to CAPA and Coda (shelters for women & kids).
Yes, I do miss it, and there is nothing like the freedom of riding with the wind blowing your hair, being free to enjoy open countryside.
I did attend and pass a local motorcycle course training. I am still with my Trike license, and I keep my motorcycle license current (renew every year)Thanks for the memories, Cheryl. Yours are incredible. Keep the rubber side down and the breeze between your knees, my friend!!!

You are most welcome. What was sad is the lady who hit me was 81 yr. old, she made an illegal lane change, an illegal U Turn, and left the scene...all she got was a $237.50 fine for Failure To Yield Right of Way.
It happened right in front of the hospital my wife worked in teh ER at, and she was behind me on her bike, and watched the whole thing unfold. I slid another 75 feet on the pavement before I got stopped...so, yes, I am really leery of "cagers" and bikes now....

Hey Cheryl! Great thread!

I'm now on a Honda VTX 1300C and recently celebrated a goal long in the making. After 5 cross country trips and twice to Alaska I had the opportunity to fly to Hawaii where I had to (unfortunately) rent a bike finally. But it enabled me to finish my goal of riding through all 50 states! And this is a beautiful country to ride through.

The first 3 trips were on a 1985 Yamaha Virago 700c I still have that bike. My longest lasting relationship :) After that a Suzuki 1500LC Intruder to a Harley Softtail Deluxe to my present VTX. I also have an old Honda Twinstar that I'm about to start rebuilding.

My first bike, 1991 Honda CBR 600 ... Go fast or go home was that bikes motto, I loved that bike, even after a horrific accident on it I had it fixed and I kept it. That was my baby, I kept it for years in the garage till this boy kept bugging me to sell it. So I did, I weeped a little on the inside when I heard he lasted a few months and sold it. Had I known, I would have bought it back.

My second bike, 2006 Honda VTX1300R, loved loved that bike.. The big retro style with the rounded fenders. I called it my poor mans fatboy. I kept that bike for two years and sold it.

My third bike 2007 Harley Davidson Road King, my second baby. That was my gem, pearl white. I remember getting that bike, I bought it from my StepDad because, my mother didnt like riding on the back of it. So, his loss my gain. I made a few mods on it. I added a full fairing system so it looked like a StreetGlide. I rode it just this past summer 3500 miles round trip in one weeks to tame 'The Tail of the Dragon' in NC. I loved that bike.

My fourth and recently acquired bike on Halloween this year. 2012 Harley Davidson Road Glide. Big Yellow/ShortBus. Shes big, shes yellow. Shes, something. I saw this bike and I fell in love instantly. You know as being a biker, if your ass aint happy you aint going to be happy on a bike. Well when I took it for a ride, my ass was happy. Now she sits in the garage, waiting for that nice day to take a peek at the roads. I am looking foward to putting some miles on her. I traded in the Road King with 37K miles for this bike. points below for what my new bike looks like. I had a pic in the gallery, but I took it down a while ago.

As for clubs, I am a founding member of the local woman's riding chapter here in Maine and currently the Director. Its a division of WOW, the same as what Clay was associated with.

My neighbor started me on a "tote-goat" in an apple orchard, 6th grade.
I hit a tree.

I used to ride my neighbors Suzuki 250, until I ran through a fence post and broke my leg in the 9th grade.

Totaled my first Work Issued Motorcycle when I got hit by an 80 year old.. bruised legs from handle bars and a sprained wrist ! I shoulda gotten the hint somewhere in there but ... I keep riding :)

I've owned so many motorcycles, from trail to racing to sport to sport touring to touring, but I currently ride a
BMW F650 Dakar. I take it up to Canada, Alaska, NW Territories and the Yukon for my dual sport adventures. Currently planning on riding the Backroads discovery route >> here (http://www.backcountrydiscoveryroutes.com/WABDR)<< this summer.
I have a Road King, that I ride daily at work.
I am looking to buy a Harley Davidson Ultra Touring motorcycle to replace the one I sold last year :(

I dont belong to any clubs or organizations and I normally dont ride with groups, I'm the one escorting them !

I started riding only a couple of years ago after my partner died, I decided that life was too short. Plus I hadn't been allowed to ride before that. hahaha

I bought myself a 2003 Honda Shadow American Classic Edition. Similar to the one in the picture except mine was all red and chrome. I loved that bike.

Unfortunately last summer I slid it off the highway. I hadn't eaten all day and we had been riding for hours. I zoned out and was onto the shoulder before it registered that it was a corner. I was very lucky as it was a soft shoulder and I was wearing all my gear. A couple of broken ribs a small bit of road rash on the hip and the expensive repairs (I didn't want to go through insurance as a new rider, it would have cost me more in the long run).

When I first started riding I took a course that the guys recommended. They had a lot of women there and they were excellent. It helped a lot.

I sold my bike before my move and was gong to replace it when I got out here but now I am moving back and most likely won't have time to ride for a while with all that is going on there. I will ride again though.

I would like something a bit smaller, I have weak hands and I struggled under the weight of that bike.

I got a bonanza mini bike when I was 10' then I got a Honda 90 2 years later.....fast forward many bikes later...Honda cmt ,sportsters,kit bikes....

And now my 2006 dynamic wide glide with Vance Hines drag pipes...

I,m good to go....appx 9 trips to sturgis and I am a 11 years patched member of the iron pigs.

Gonna get a fat boy to go along with my wide glide.


I also have a Honda riding lawn mower lol.... It's a cruiser!

I had been riding for quite awhile before I finally took a course. When we started the Sirens we made a rule that everyone had to have taken a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course at least once in order to join. Those of us who were already members took it as a group at a school where one of our founding members was an MSF instructor. I had no idea how many things I had been doing wrong! I've been eager to take classes and hone my skills ever since.

I have several times had to slam on my brakes...and thinking to myself..oh shit, hear i go! and I have seen so many motorcycle wrecks that I will not have a passenger on my bike. If something was to happen, and I came out of the wreck ok, but yet the passenger didnt make it. I would never be able to live with myself because of that. because of the "what if's"

I know i have had a few friends get bummed about me not taking them for a ride..but, i just cant do it. Not when i have no control of some asshat pulling out in front of me.

my bro-in-law and sister was on their bike, he was taking a curve when a car driving opposite direction crossed the yellow line and my bro-in-law went off the road ( on purpose ) to avoid a head on with the car. they came out of this ok, after several stitches, staples, broken bones.

So, your question makes me wonder as well. do y'all take ppl for a ride?

My first car was a bike. lol 1983 I was 18 and a Marine just reported to my first duty station, and I bought a Honda CB750. I really wanted a Honda Shadow but it was out of my price range. I had the CB 750 custom for 1 solid week when I got hit by a drunk driver. After the casts came off and the burns healed 3 months later with the insurance money I was able to afford the Honda Shadow. Remember that saying be careful what you wish for..... lmao. All is well that ends well I suppose. I have owned yamaha's dirt bikes etc... I have always had a bike. I own a Harley Softail Standard now.
I would like to get a custom bike with the extra wide rear tire, chopped out slightly with 8 in risers and drag bars like I have now, but I want a big fuel tank so I don't want it chopped out too much. Either that or another Harley Softtail or a WideGlide. I don't belong to any riding groups.

I take passengers, but its rare, for benefit rides. If I am dating someone, I will take them.

But I totally get what you are saying about the what ifs and everyone else on the road that you have to be aware of.

As far as safety goes , I drive for a living so I have a little more safe driver training than most people do. And a little more driving experience than most as well. But when I am on my bike, I am constantly antisipating the worst possible scenerio and adjusting myself accordingly. I always assume no one sees me and try to stay prepared to make quick adjustments and quick moves and I always look for an out , like a shoulder or grass, should the worse possible scenerio unfold . So far it has worked well for me.
When I was hit by the drunk driver back in 1983 I was a very new cyclist and unexperienced driver. I was actually sitting at a red light when it all happened, but still I look back and I made alot of mistakes and I am sure I could have avoided it , knowing what I know today. Being a good defensive driver, I like to think is the key to being a safe driver. To me it doesn't matter who is at fault , a broken bone hurts the same way if it was your fault or someone elses. So I want to avoid the accident all together, for example I never tell myself , he has the yield sign not me. Now when I am in my tractor trailer I might say that from time to time. But not out loud. lol :)

Never owned my own bike, but I worked part time at a local Harley Dealership for 3 years. I was invited to go on tons of rides and runs....so I was the passenger...

I learned quickly how to jump off bikes that were going down...(sad but necessary) the ultimate importance of proper gear...and to respect and listen to the person driving that bike. It takes a lot to put your life in someone's hands like that, and more than once I seriously questioned my sanity for going with certain people back then! Also was good to have extra eyes...just because people on 4 wheels DO NOT pay attention like they should...it sucks. I am always on the lookout and listening....

I have been on the back of so many different types of bikes from full dressers, to trikes, to even riding in a side car once...omg that was terrifying! One run was a 75 mile Dice Run on the back of a Sportster with ONLY a bitch bar on the back...That ride was hell...with nothing to lean against, and the driver leaning on me! WTH!! Anyway I thought I would never walk again after that ride....and he was not the most responsible driver....and then it rained...oh what an experience that was....

I also belonged to our local chapter of A.B.A.T.E..(American Bikers Aimed Toward Education)We did tons of fundraising, brought wreaths to the local emergency rooms, even sponsored part of the expressway for clean up detail. And so much more....it was a great time in my life...I miss those days...always willing to be a passenger! :)

I sold my bike about 3 years ago. I had a 2004, 1600cc Kawasaki Mean Streak, candy green. I miss it. I took my rear pegs off, so I couldnt ride anyone, and put a single stilleto seat on it.

Great idea! I have very little experience as a passenger, so I would be quite interested in hearing about riding from the pillion perspective.

I would love to own a vintage Indian or even a Harley one day. Living in Tucson means it's motorcycle weather pretty much year round, and someday I'd love to have a vintage Vespa...once my girls are old enough to drive.

As a rider I know it's important to be still when on the back of a bike. And I love making the hand signals at other motorcyclists.

I also know it's entirely possible to ride a motorcycle in 3" heels and a sundress. ;)

I've been hit in accidents more times than I care to admit. I've been lucky enough to walk away several times, I had a few broken bones in my second most serious accident in 2002, and I was creamed in a VERY serious accident in 2011. Ironically, I was going about 15 mph when I got hit from behind by someone who made an illegal turn right through me. The final tally of the breaks they could find was 23. If there were more I'll never know. Despite all that, I take passengers whenever it seems convenient. Yes, something terrible could happen one day, and I wouldn't be able to live with myself.

I do track days, I teach at the track, and I run a parking lot skills brush-up before our Sirens Opening Ride every spring. Instructing is actually very educational for me. As they say, teaching means learning twice. Even with all the track riding I do, I still take the MSF experienced rider course with the Sirens every two years because I'm serious about keeping my skills as sharp as possible. An MSF professional might find a bad habit I wouldn't be able to perceive in myself. Even with all that, I'm obviously still just as vulnerable as any other rider.

My urban passengers always get a big thrill because I'm an aggressive NYC rider, and I really know my way around my home town. My highway passengers are just as happy. I was terribly ignorant about everything when I started riding. I immediately started carrying passengers who were much larger than I was, and I did it on the hills and trolly tracks of San Francisco where I learned to ride. I just didn't know that my passengers were supposed to be smaller than me. I've never had trouble taking a passenger who is twice my weight or better, and so I do.

So, why am I not reasonably fearful that something bad could happen to my passenger one day? Especially since I would likely sign my house over and put a gun to my head if that ever did happen? I have no rational answer for that reasonable question.

Yes! I've done it in 4" heels and a minidress. The trick is to wear pointy toed pumps. Then you can still catch the shifter with the tip of your shoe even when your heel is hooked over the footpeg.

My first bike was a little indian mini bike when I was seven. Then two years later, my brother and I had a 70cc
*something* that we learned to use a clutch on, and from that point on, we were never motorcycle less. We
rode lots of trails. I bought my first road bike when I was 16. It was a suzuki 185. I rode that bike for years! 400 cc
is a good sized bike for me and it's the largest I've ever ridden, I've never been on the back of a bike. TOO DANGEROUS.

Lol......I have noticed the additional bonus to the zombie drivers.....when they turn left in front of me on my motorcycle, there is often a dent already on their right front fender or door. A legacy that seems to survive time's test. Now I only ride for pleasure, my first bike 25 years ago, I have been hit twice in similar scenarios once slid with the bike, once kept it up. I love the wind and it is difficult to give that up. I know several of you in this thread and I bet as a group others vehicles would both see and never forget us! Ha!

I learned to ride when I was 15. My friend's father used to buy bikes and cars and fix them up and sell them. He had a couple of 125's and my friend knew how to ride (presumably he taught her, I never asked), so she taught me in the new housing development across from ours that wasn't developed yet, so lots of empty roads, no traffic. From the first time I was able to move that bike along, I was HOOKED! I couldn't wait until I could own a bike some day. It took me quite a few years - I bought my first bike at age 31 - a brand new Suzuki Savage 650. I absolutely loved that bike, and had it for 12 years, but finally decided to sell it before I moved to AZ 2 years ago. I've wanted to buy a new bike for many years, and still hope to someday!

Well the shadow works sometimes and then doesnt in the next moment. I've actually come to hate that bike :( The thing makes me feel like I'm crazy when it breaks down and then my bike mechanic rides it to his shop.

Currently, I just got it out of the shop for lose battery connection and some new spark plugs, then a day after I got it home, it would warm up then die when I pulled the throttle. I got a ride to work that night, yet the next morning it started and I rode it 12 miles and back. Next time I tired it...pulled the throttle after it warmed up, it died. Right this second if I went out there it would work though. I hope.

It has done phantom stuff like that for the year I've had it. One time I told my mechanic it was leaking gas, so the mechanic has it in his shop all day...no problems. It was late though so he decided he would just call me in the morning to come get it. When he opened shop the next day, there was gas all over the floor. I got lucky, but most of the time it makes me look crazy. I got "honeyed" the other day about a conversation about how to start the bike...I'm ready to sell it. If I did, I would get another honda shadow though, hopefully normal one. This shadow only has 1 down three up instead of normal bikes with 1 down four up, you have to take the gas tank off and then some to get to the battery. What else....the petcock has the shittiest design ever and if you turn it too much, it leaks. That's actually the biggest problem, everything else is whatever, but I sure do miss that rebel even though its smaller.

On the otherside, I am a new rider. I didn't realize you we're supposed to warm a bike up with the choke even during the summer, thought that was a winter thing. And I also prefer to park and start my bike from first gear, which I've learned that its hard on the starter and battery. When I got the bike it warmed up just fine- no choke, in first gear with the kickstand up, now it ONLY starts in neutral...and sometimes only starts without the choke (warm weather?)

Wow. You're right that your Shadow sounds like a lemon. Intermittent problems are sooo annoying, but you didn't need me to tell you that.

When a bike mysteriously cuts in and out one of the first places I look is at the battery and starter motor terminals. It's an easy fix, and those fasteners do like to walk out. It sounds like you did have that problem, but it should have been corrected by your mechanic. The next place I look is the sidestand interlock. That's the switch that keeps your bike from starting when the sidestand is down. It's in a position to invite failure because it's close to the ground, so it can get coated with road gorp and rust, etc. It would be something to ask your mechanic to check if you aren't confident about finding it yourself.

If the bike is dying when you throttle up, then it's likely there's a problem with the carbeuration/fuel injection. I always check the easiest thing first, so I look at the air filter to make sure small animals haven't been nesting in there. If your air filter is unobstructed, you may have some crap in the gas that's clogging something. Try running Gumout through your fuel system.

As you probably already know, a bike can have multiple problems, and that can be confusing because you can't be certain which symptom belongs to which problem. It's great when you can identify and solve at least one problem so you can start picking them off separately. I hope this helps.

I hope the gas cleaner works. It's hard to tell without seeing and hearing it, but it sounds like your bike has more than one problem. Suddenly and intermittently cutting out is most likely to be a electrical problem. Losing power and backfiring is most certainly a carbeuration issue.

When gas isn't fully burned in the top end, the remaining fumes detonate elsewhere. That backfire you're hearing is unburned gas exploding in your exhaust system. That's never good. It could be that one cylinder isn't firing, a clogged air filter, or a stuck needle in your carburetor. (Or is this bike fuel injected?)

To check if all cylinders are firing, start the bike up when the engine is cold. Feel the header pipes just after you start the bike, before everything gets too hot to touch. You can even put a dot of spit on each one. If one pipe gets hot and the other one doesn't, then you know that you're not firing on all cylinders.

I just woke up from my post celebratory nap. LGBT Pride in NYC was very special today, indeed. Everyone was feeling triumphant about the recent SCOTUS decision on DOMA, and it didn't even rain on our parade. Well, not much, anyway. We led the way on our motorcycles, just as we have for the last 26 years. I wore something spangly and fabulous, including opalescent lavender pink sandals with 4" stiletto heels. Yes, I can ride in them, and they posed no impediment to me standing up on the pegs and waving madly at the happy crowds with my free hand most of the way down the Parade route, as usual.

We had fewer bikes this time, probably due to threats of thunderstorms. As we've done for the last five years, the Sirens sponsored food and drinks for all the riders. A member of our club recently started a food truck business, so we were lucky to have Hot Dog Donna catering our post-Pride ride lunch.

I've heard it said for years that the motorcycle contingent leading the way down 5th Ave. is one of the best things about the Pride Parade. Many women spectators tell us that we're by far their favourite part. The crowd certainly goes wild when they see us. I can't adequately describe the feeling of euphoria. The other riders are equally unable to say why it's always so very special for us.

If you're anywhere near NYC on the last Sunday in June next year I encourage you to join us. The Sirens Women's Motorcycle Club organises the motorcycle contingent which is open to all riders of all genders and all orientations.

Now that I'm recharged and refreshed I'm going to put on some slightly more sensible clothes and ride back out to see our special Pride fireworks display over the Hudson.

We all missed the women's booth terribly last year, so we were really happy to hear that the Women's Motorcyclist Foundation hooked up with several other groups including the AMA, WIMA, the Motor Maids, and Women In The Wind to form the Women's Coalition of Motorcyclists. They'll have a booth at the NYC show this year! Many of the NYC Sirens plan to volounteer at the booth. Is anyone else planning to come to the show?

On a selfish, personal note, I just took myself out to Harbor Freight and bought myself the foldable motorcycle trailer I've been wanting. The Trailer In A Bag which I've been over-using for several years doesn't even belong to me, and it went under 5' of salt water during Hurricane Sandy. I've been using it all season anyway, but even I have been nervously concerned about safety lately. My new trailer needs assembly, and I'll feel better if I stiffen up some of the less robust parts, but it was on sale for less than $300!!!!! Yay. I think I like buying myself presents.

Luckily for me, I'll be in Melbourne for their Pride celebration. Hopefully I'll be allowed to ride in the parade with the Melbourne Dykes On Bikes, and then I'll ride around some more in Australia. It's going to be epic, and I'll come home flat broke but happy.

I'll be happy to hear from anyone with advice on interesting places or events in NZ and/or Australia!

Naah. I'm going to have enough trouble just remembering to take photos. I haven't taken pics on any of my other adventures because I felt like I was in the moment, and didn't want to stop to capture something in order to to see it again in some future moment. Now that my memory is dimming I sort of regret those choices.

The first bike I ever rode was a 1977 AMF - Harley Davidson. 250 cc.
It was purple in colour, it was bad ass, I was 14.
My father purchased the bike for the “family” 6 kids. I was the only one
who rode it. No one could pry my hands from the bars.
I drove the bike illegally for about 2 yrs and after numerous small wipe outs I finally
had to put it out to pasture after I went flying into a ditch. I flew over the handle bars face first into black berry brambles. I had numerous small droplets of blood running down my face and one tear.

I rode my friends mini bike when I was about 10.....right into a tree.

Then about seven years ago I took the motorcycle class and passed it with the highest grade. Then I went to test drive bikes. I found a couple I could actually fit on and hold up. But being on the road with traffic, even just for the test drive, scared the hell out of me so I never got a bike.

Then a couple of years ago my best friend got a Can-am Spyder. It looked so cool and had three wheels so I wouldn't have to hold it up and it's big. But damn at the price...oh well.

Then a month ago she tells me she's selling it because she never rides it and wants the money for another expense. She sold it to me for a song, and threw in two helmets, winter and summer gloves, winter and summer jackets.

So I finally have a bike! It's the Spyder RTS, the touring version. My friend never skimps, so it is loaded with all kinds of bells and whistles. It's my daily driver. I've almost put more miles on it in the month I've had it than she did in the two years she did.

I'm not in any clubs, but am in a couple of groups on FB that also ride locally. I'll be joining them for my first long ride next weekend. Down country roads to Lynchburg. Then this October I'll be going to Spyders in the Smokies and riding the Dragon!

This is a great story!!!! PJ...you will LOVE Tail O' the Dragon.....it is very near my homeplace....it is 22 hairpin curves over 11 miles!!! There is a tree of shame....you will have to see.
I was Chapter Director for about 7 years for our group B.R.A.T.S. (Babes riding around the South) a local chapter of Women on Wheels. Group now defunct...sadly! I LOVED our group!!!

Anyway, you will truly love that area of NC! The Smokies is some great riding. Check out Cherohola Skyway for more great riding areas!

Our first track day of the season on Monday. I'll finally be riding the bike of my dreams. It's a new-to-me BMW S1000RR!!!!

Well we just had the warmest April on record, here in Vancouver BC.
Made for some great early season riding. I currently ride a Kawasaki Ninja 650. Its a fun bike and one of the more comfortable bikes Ive had.

Monday will be my 5th track day on my new-to-me dream bike. I'll be venturing outside the comfort of my home group which holds most of their track days at an older, inferior track. It's also a six hour drive from my house. The far better, far newer track is only four and a half hours away, but my home group is so cool that it's totally worth the extra miles. Nobody ever says stupid stuff about women riding at the track, and the aggression level is quite pleasantly low. Every time I take a track day with a different group at the beautiful, new, and relatively close track, and I mean EVERY single time, with every single group, the attendees are overwhelmingly stupid and cursed with testosterone poisoning. They make idiotic comments about gender in general and my gender in particular. They're in some sort of primal competition at all times, and they're just plain irritating to be around. Not to mention that it's not particularly safe to be out on the track with men who are so desperately afraid of a GRRRRRRLLL passing them that they do really stupid stuff when I zip by. I hope this turns out well.

It was fantastic! Idiot quotient was set on low. Very low. Yay! There were at least 6 other women in attendance. I would go back to another track day with the new group in a heartbeat. YAY!!!!!
