This is your place to post random geeky stuff, discuss your nerdy interests, and just generally let your freak flag fly.
I only ask one thing of you: NO SPOILERS!
Not everyone has seen that awesome movie, read that amazing book,
or caught up on that phenomenal TV show just yet.

Caught this on HBO the other night:
http://thefilmtalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/harry-potter-and-the-prisoner-of-azkaban.jpg
That's actually my favorite scene in the movie because he is supposed to be such a bad guy, but once Lupin starts changing, he immediately goes to protect the kids without hesitating...
I got a small portable DVD player for my trip back to IL and considered bring all of the HP movies, then I considered bringing all of these:
http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTw8NCj8s5kVRoGgWeUqi85xfs-6yixHluVtg-c6wWyf7IMQLtvLA
But I dont have the last one yet.
So what will probably end up happening is I will just geek out and bring one or more season(s) of each of these:

Our doormat is "There's No Place Like 127.0.0.1". We also have that as a bumper sticker because we roll geeky like that.
My latest geeky acquisition came as a birthday present.

It would have been Douglas Adams' 61st birthday today.
Google has a fun doodle (http://newsfeed.time.com/2013/03/11/google-doodle-celebrates-birthday-of-douglas-adams-the-hitchhikers-guide-to-the-galaxy-author/) to commemorate.
Some fun snips from the Hitchhiker's pentalogy:
"There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.
There is another theory which states that this has already happened."
"In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move."
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
"On Earth ... the problem had been with cars. The disadvantages involved in pulling lots of black sticky slime from out of the ground where it had been safely hidden out of harm's way, turning it into tar to cover the land with, smoke to fill the air with and pouring the rest into the sea, all seemed to outweigh the advantages of being able to get more quickly from one place to another – particularly when the place you arrived at had probably become, as a result of this, very similar to the place you had left, i.e. covered with tar, full of smoke and short of fish."
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
"A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof was to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools."
Mostly Harmless
"There was a point to this story, but it has temporarily escaped the chronicler's mind."
Epilogue - So Long And Thanks for All the Fish

Femme geek in the house. I way totally into Star Trek (the original series) when it was first on (I was 7-8), I am an engineer by degree and a networking and information security teacher who is brushing up on trig and calculus so that I might teach higher maths instead of technology, and I wore one of my five pi shirts to work on Thursday and am already planning a party for pi day in two or three years, depending on whether I round or truncate.
I have found my tribe.
As I was not online yesterday. I must extend my sincerest apologies, I happen to be a day late and a denarius short.

Ever wondered what would happen if you threw a baseball or softball at an appreciable fraction of the speed of light?
What would happen if you tried to hit a baseball pitched at 90% the speed of light?
The answer turns out to be “a lot of things”, and they all happen very quickly, and it doesn’t end well for the batter (or the pitcher). I sat down with some physics books, a Nolan Ryan action figure, and a bunch of videotapes of nuclear tests and tried to sort it all out. What follows is my best guess at a nanosecond-by-nanosecond portrait:
The ball is going so fast that everything else is practically stationary. Even the molecules in the air are stationary. Air molecules vibrate back and forth at a few hundred miles per hour, but the ball is moving through them at 600 million miles per hour. This means that as far as the ball is concerned, they’re just hanging there, frozen.
The ideas of aerodynamics don’t apply here. Normally, air would flow around anything moving through it. But the air molecules in front of this ball don’t have time to be jostled out of the way. The ball smacks into them so hard that the atoms in the air molecules actually fuse with the atoms in the ball’s surface. Each collision releases a burst of gamma rays and scattered particles.
These gamma rays and debris expand outward in a bubble centered on the pitcher’s mound. They start to tear apart the molecules in the air, ripping the electrons from the nuclei and turning the air in the stadium into an expanding bubble of incandescent plasma. The wall of this bubble approaches the batter at about the speed of light—only slightly ahead of the ball itself.
The constant fusion at the front of the ball pushes back on it, slowing it down, as if the ball were a rocket flying tail-first while firing its engines. Unfortunately, the ball is going so fast that even the tremendous force from this ongoing thermonuclear explosion barely slows it down at all. It does, however, start to eat away at the surface, blasting tiny particulate fragments of the ball in all directions. These fragments are going so fast that when they hit air molecules, they trigger two or three more rounds of fusion.
After about 70 nanoseconds the ball arrives at home plate. The batter hasn't even seen the pitcher let go of the ball, since the light carrying that information arrives at about the same time the ball does. Collisions with the air have eaten the ball away almost completely, and it is now a bullet-shaped cloud of expanding plasma (mainly carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen) ramming into the air and triggering more fusion as it goes. The shell of x-rays hits the batter first, and a handful of nanoseconds later the debris cloud hits.
When it reaches the batter, the center of the cloud is still moving at an appreciable fraction of the speed of light. It hits the bat first, but then the batter, plate, and catcher are all scooped up and carried backward through the backstop as they disintegrate. The shell of x-rays and superheated plasma expands outward and upward, swallowing the backstop, both teams, the stands, and the surrounding neighborhood—all in the first microsecond.
Suppose you’re watching from a hilltop outside the city. The first thing you see is a blinding light, far outshining the sun. This gradually fades over the course of a few seconds, and a growing fireball rises into a mushroom cloud. Then, with a great roar, the blast wave arrives, tearing up trees and shredding houses.
Everything within roughly a mile of the park is leveled, and a firestorm engulfs the surrounding city. The baseball diamond is now a sizable crater, centered a few hundred feet behind the former location of the backstop.
A careful reading of official Major League Baseball Rule 6.08(b) suggests that in this situation, the batter would be considered "hit by pitch", and would be eligible to advance to first base.

I've been waiting for an opportunity to post this somewhere.
Most of the geekery in this thread has been of the non-vidjagame variety (save perhaps for weatherboi posting the Konami Code, which I rather appreciated), so I figure I may as well correct that. Supergiant Games, the independent video game studio that made the excellent Bastion--a game known for its art direction and especially its excellent narrator, Logan Cunningham--just announced its next project recently. It's a game called Transistor.
The first video is the minute-and-change release trailer originally posted (get a load of the music, seriously). The second is IGN's video of the demo that Supergiant Games brought to PAX, showing off the game's art direction, gameplay, and use of sound in greater detail (including a new song by the same vocalist who did the song in the release trailer, Ashley Barrett), as well as revealing a few things about the plot and protagonist. One of my favourite little bells and whistles as far as the audio direction goes occurs a bit after 2:35 and is repeated several times throughout the video--see if you can catch it.
GTik6sYT_BE
Mj9plya4Vdk
The plot admittedly confuses me--though I expect the intro sequence should get some polishing between the initial demo and the 2014 release--but I'm digging the protagonist. She's as fabulous as the audio direction and Ashley Barrett's voice.

"Inspired by Anita Sarkeesian’s Video Game Tropes vs Women, I wanted to pitch a Zelda game where Zelda herself was the hero, rescuing a Prince Link.
"Clockwork Empire is set 2,000 years after Twilight Princess, and is not a reboot, but simply another iteration in the Zelda franchise. It just so happens that in this case, Zelda is the protagonist. I’m a very big Zelda fan, and worked hard to draw from key elements in the continuity and mythos.
"This concept work is meant to show that Zelda as a game protagonist can be both compelling and true to the franchise, while bringing new and dynamic game elements that go farther than being a simple gender swap."

Animals in the wild have to continually contend with the expansion of human civilization. Certain wild animals have learned to coexist and even thrive in urban settings, pigeons and raccoons being obvious examples.
Well, subway goers in Moscow are becoming familiar with stray dogs. These dogs have become accustomed to using the subway system as a means to travel across Moscow, even managing to catch a nap along the way. The dogs hop on in the morning and travel to the city center where they spend the day begging for scraps. At the end of the day they get back on the subway and travel to the suburbs where they sleep in relative safety.
The dogs have become experts at judging the length of time they need to stay on the train, and seem to work together to ensure that they exit the subway at the right stop.
Scientists believe this phenomenon began after the Soviet Union collapsed in the 1990s, and Russia’s new capitalists moved industrial complexes from the city center to the suburbs.
Dr Andrei Poiarkov, of the Moscow Ecology and Evolution Institute, said: “These complexes were used by homeless dogs as shelters, so the dogs had to move together with their houses. Because the best scavenging for food is in the city center, the dogs had to learn how to travel on the subway – to get to the center in the morning, then back home in the evening, just like people.”

...So my GM is going to run a RuneQuest game set in Pavis during the Second Age, for which the other two players are playing a bard who follows Nandan/Ernalda and a blacksmith who follows Gustbran the Bonesmith. I will probably be playing a young warrior who follows Vinga, after going apostate from the very patriarchal faith she was raised in to join the Storm Tribe.
If there is anyone here to whom that was not complete and utter gibberish, please tell me.

I'm unreasonably excited about this:
QAEkuVgt6Aw
Not just because it is Star Trek, but also because he is in it:
http://i50.tinypic.com/2zno9a8.jpg
I just realized that he is also in The Hobbit movies, as the Necromancer. I didn't even notice this (I'll just have to watch the first one five more times :|). I was already totally jazzed that his co-star on Sherlock, Martin Freeman, played Bilbo. Then there is Richard Armitage...well...I cannot begin to explain how fun it was to discover that I get to watch multiple movies with him as Thorin...:)

I love bernard cumberbatch! Sherlock has to be one of the best things I have seen on the tv in years. Star trek comes out here on the 9th of may. But I have to wait till I am back in the states at the end of may to see it with my geeky sister and my brother in law.*mutters* I love how we had this convo after we talked about how great big bang theory is. Right back to watching last week ep of supernatural. Charlie is in it! Wish she had a bigger role! If her and Castiel were in a ep together that would be the best ep ever!

Canada unveils its sweet new space-themed $5 bill in space
With the help of Commander Chris Hadfield aboard the ISS, the Bank of Canada yesterday launched its new robot- and astronaut-themed five dollar bill.
The new polymer $5 bill shows the Canadarm2 and Dextre manipulator robots, along with an ambiguous astronaut meant to symbolize all Canadians who have contributed to its space program.

LISTEN TO NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON
Neil DeGrasse Tyson is so fucking great. Just a few samples for folks here not familiar with him:
A lecture-series closing speech that has been referred to as a sermon, of all things, and I can see it:
6RjW5-4IiSc
NDT on scientific literacy (a concept I love):
jfDNl0IQ7T4
NDT on coming to your senses, about the five human senses, artificial senses, and that "common sense" thing:
0PPUbzMDK_k
NDT on religion in schools (kind of a hot-button issue with "Intelligent Design" and all that):
5FTSylWy7U8
NDT being awesome on Bill Maher:
tKdaRcptVz8
There's a lot more out there. I just snagged some highlights.

Pardon the double-post, but I just finished the new Tomb Raider game last night/this morning, and it was pretty great. I didn't play any of the previous installments, but this one actually looked like it was worth playing, and I was definitely not disappointed--it was pretty badass and like playing an action movie (albeit with slower-paced exploration and puzzle segments interspersed with the many high-tension fight and escape sequences, but it works). Lara just keeps getting progressively more fucked up over the course of the game and keeps on truckin' like this is Die Hard or some shit and I loved it. And you know how you get this feeling when a game is nearing the ending, with the buildup of tension leading to the climax and all that? The bulk of the game was like that.
Also, there was an observation Lara made early in the game which I found particularly apt, in response to Dr. Whitman saying of a powerful ancient queen that some said she had shamanistic or elemental power, not just political: "A woman wields that much power and sooner or later it gets called witchcraft."

I don't know if any of you have ever been to Maker Faire (http://makerfaire.com/) or not, but it is pretty much literally CHRISTMAS FOR GEEKS!!!!
I have been going since the first one in 2006 since I live near where it started. If you are in the SF Bay Area it is this next weekend at the San Mateo fair grounds.
After the first year when it just exploded in popularity the city has figured out how to deal with it. Get there early, it is set up so that parking lots around town are on a shuttle loop and free buses run every few minutes to get you there. Totally worth any inconvenience.
If you are not local, they are now hosted in Kansas City, Chicago, New York, and now Rome. There are dozens of other independent locally hosted ones all over the world popping up too, here is a list (http://makerfaire.com/map/).
Seriously, if you are even a fringe geek, get thee to a Maker Faire, it opens up so many things to learn; and GEEK is celebrated everywhere. You will be one of the cool people.
ETA: Don't miss an entire exhibit hall set up with the biggest Tesla Coils you have ever seen doing battle!

I guess for me, the observable and scary difference, between now and 200M years ago, is overpopulation, and the resulting irreversible damage to previously unpopulated and untouched areas. That just doesn't look like ebb and flow to me, and it doesn't look to be slowing down any time soon. The Earth seems to be changing much more rapidly now, then it did in the time of Pangaea...So, some of those images made me think about that...

I kind of doubt that this means anything to anyone here except for myself and possibly Maryam, but for anyone familiar with the Glorantha setting, a community for it was just added on Google+:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/102577244714186267235?cfem=1
Suffice it to say the Glorantha team is feeling very energized by an extremely successful Kickstarter campaign they just had for a new great big two-volume book on the almost fifty-year-old setting.
I'm still trying to get that one Glorantha campaign my GM wanted to run with myself playing a young Vingan warrior, another player playing a young Nandan bard, and another player playing a blacksmith who follows Gustbran the Bonesmith off the ground. She seems to be one of those people for whom the grass is always greener on the other side: she has so much trouble getting excited about anything that's already on the plate.

I was so thrown off by the fact that Lord Frey was played by Filch from Harry Potter that the entire episode was somewhat Twilight Zoney. I kept looking around for Mrs Norris.
I'm going to have to watch it again now that I've processed David Bradley's presence and now that I know he's not going to start shouting "Students out of bed!"

The card game. I really like the artwork:
There are awesome animals

Badass monsters

And of course dragons!

If I played wargames (and offline tabletop as opposed to the usual online tabletop gaming I do at that), I'd kickstart this.

SOOO true! I want to strangle this kid. He's either a great actor or a real-life asshat!
Someone told me that Cerci was told in a prophesy when she was young that each of her children would sit on the throne... I'm hoping that means Joffrey dies next season!

You HAVE to read the books! If you have an e-reader I have copies I can email you. They are AMAZING! I have them as a pdf on my phone and read them that way.
George Martin (the author) wrote a letter to the kid that plays Joffrey and told him "Congratulations on your marvelous performance, everyone hates you." HAHA!

Play it. (Warning: the game is not as silly and cutesy as it looks. Also, to exit it, you have to press and hold Escape. Just a heads-up. And, gameplay tip, in the very first room where you have control of the player character, the exit is not obvious. Go to the right.)

Listen to the soundtrack, too. (IMO, track 12 is the best; your mileage may vary.)

So uh did everyone hear that there's going to be a new Cosmos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmos:_A_Space-Time_Odyssey) series next year, presented by Neil DeGrasse Tyson and made by a team including Ann Druyan (Carl Sagan's widow) and Seth MacFarlane? I don't immediately recall if I or someone else already mentioned it here.
Also, no comments on Undertale (http://undertale.com/)? Really? I know games can be intimidating to non-gamers, but it's a free (the STORE link is presently for the soundtrack), roughly half-hour demo (though one with multiple endings that reward playing it more than once) that has both an instruction booklet (with pictures!) and a particularly gentle learning curve, will run even on old and low-end Windows PCs, and is already swimming in rave reviews after just a few weeks. Also the music is pretty great. And like I say, don't let the initial cutesy, children's-story-like intro mislead you.

I haven't yet. Tell me about it? (I am, admittedly, wondering if the female character depicted alongside the male character in the advertisements is playable or just an NPC co-star. This has been known to affect my purchasing decisions.)

Not I. That would involve "socializing." (Also travel. Travel is expensive.)

So far I have played a girl in the beginning they don't show and him. I will let you if you get to play her later. It is very cool. I haven't played much yet but I am hoping to play more today.

I just built a new deck for myself. I am still tweaking it and figuring out what I want to do and how it is going to work.
