Cool! Have ya been to all these places. I'm a derelict places enthusiast too. I go to take pictures but some just prefer a more psychogeographic experience. What kit do you take with you?

It's a sad reality that these places, buildings, and the like actually exist in the US. Detroit actually has so many of these empty and alone buildings and houses. I lived only 5 mins from south Detroit, and it was very sad and gloomy there. I hated it.

I love this thread. Though sad, I find it absolutely breath taking, the way nature reclaims what is hers.

I agree! The economic story behind the abandoned place is a story of pain and loss for many people, but also, there is the story of reclamation, resiliency, all the ways nature fights for a place on earth.

The History Channel's program, "Life After People" illustrates what would happen to our cities, buildings, structures, etc. if everyone just disappeared today. Many of the buildings still standing, believe it or not, are still structurally sound, and were built of such a quality, that current churches, buildings, structures, etc., cannot match.

Just a reminder that if these pictures aren't taken by you and you don't attribute the photographer of the pictures you're stealing their work.

Me and other urbexer friends have had our work stolen regularly. There's even been folks passing other's pictures off as their own. Copyright is serious stuff folks.

Dkatari brought up a word I didn't know: "urbexing."

I found this definition in http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Urbexing

"Urbexing is the act of exploring urban areas that are generally off-limits to regular civilians."

I've always been intrigued by spaces that are off-limits to many. I'm not talking about private residential space, but private spaces within public settings.

I like meeting people who share access to those spaces. Like, an old friend who was the head of pathology at a hospital in NYC. He gave me a tour through lab areas that were off limits to visitors, so I could take notes for a poem.

I would love to find a guide who could share access with me to:

abandoned subway stations
animal clinics at the Bronx zoo
places in the redwood forests in Humboldt Park, Northern California, where the largest trees on earth are growing (their sites are off limits to the general public, for the trees' protection)
the construction site of the new Freedom Tower, looking out from the cage of steel beams at 100 stories

Before 9/11, when security all over the City was more slack, I would sneak behind the scenes at Madison Square Garden at the Westminster Dog Show, so I could wander up and down the aisles where the show dogs were being temporarily housed and groomed.

Their owners sat in lawn chairs, and the dogs were on leashes next to them. The owners were happy to talk about their dogs, and the dogs were friendly and well behaved. I got to pet an Irish Wolf Hound; I'd never seen one before in person.

And it was so cool to watch the dogs being blow dried and groomers trimming their whiskers and eye brows and so on. It's a real art, grooming some of the dogs, like standard poodles, where such precision goes into their hair cuts.

So I guess I have the heart of an urbexer. Who knew.

I have not been to all these places...Though i'm drawn to the images and visiting when possible! I'm leaving for Europe in the end of May and will hopefully come back with some great shots!
My friend is coming loaded down with photo equipment, so this should be pretty fun! We've been researching some great locations in Portugal and Spain.
What do you use to shoot with? :)

I'm not at home so can't answer fully. I can explain a lot more about urbexing later. Now you've looked up urbexing now try flanneur and psychogeography.

:chaplin:

Sadly there's been a fashion for over-processing urbex shots with the HDR technique. As can be seen in some of the above pictures. I personally don't like it and think that it spoils the natural beauty of decay.

I feel a strong affinity (regarding my work, and way of being in the world), with both the flanneur and psychogeographic aesthetic!

Thanks for bringing those words to mind.

As for the HDR technique—I Googled it: "High Dynamic Range" photography.

As for "spoiling the natural beauty of decay," I agree in the sense that the technique seems to romanticize decay, whereas if you didn't HDR the shots of abandoned places—in which the human-made decays, and the natural thrives—there would still be plenty of opportunity to capture intensity, longing, despair, joy, and other feelings they might evoke.

I'm not a photographer and I don't want to dis the HDR thing outright, just saying in some instances I think it's the easy way out.

But still beautiful.

And as for stuff that's romanticized, I like it romanticized to the point of being almost hallucinogenic.

I agree with Cailin and IslandScout. Thank you for starting this thread femmeInterrupted!

I adore seeking out abandoned buildings, especially in the countryside. There are a lot of abandoned homes and barns in Oregon, and Mother Nature takes them back with gusto. I find them hauntingly beautiful.

I took all of the photos below, while exploring in Oregon...

Holly, I love the images you just posted.

You don't use that HDR technique I've just been made aware of, by this thread, but you do create a lot of wistful and sometimes spooky intensity with the angles in the shots.

A lot of people on BFP live in rural areas. I bet they know of many, many glorious old abandoned barns and farmhouses and other structures.

If only we could put you on a tour, like artists back in the days before artists' colonies, when artists and writers and musicians would stay on people's estates and just do their thing for a while, then give a show or a concert or a reading, and move on!

I love detail shots, particularly playing with dof. I love shots taken in pitch black on long exposures and playing with light painting. Corridor porn used to be 'big' in urbex circles too :cheesy:

Minimum kit for exploring
Very stout boots and old tough clothing and latex gloves. One can often be found crawling about in service tunnels and up ladders caked in pigeon shit.
Camera rucksack
Nikon D100 dslr
Nikkor 35mm f1.4 - didn't take this one often as it's not AF
Nikon 28-200 f2.8
Sigma 28mm f2.0 -
Small sturdy Slik tripod
1 2xC cell Cree bulb torch
1 2xAA Maglite mini
PP3 mask - Asbestos is an issue in old buildings. As a person with lung disease I had to be especially careful and wore a respirator on more than one occasion.
Toilet paper...for the obvious
Travel medical kit - used on many occasions.

Food/liquid is important on a full day trip too and space needs to be made in the camera bag for it. We used to see the younger urbexers out with nothing to eat or drink but the Usual Suspects - Muse, Scary Mary, Magoo & Dr.Doo, were all older and we looked after ourselves a little better.

As to HDR. The photographers and urbexers I admire don't use such techniques. Despite being a digital photographer myself, the work of those I admire is always on film. I loved what Ex.Mrs.D used to do on medium format film when urbexing. The were the best urbex pics I've ever seen...yes I was and am biased but she is a very talented woman. The pictures I admire tend not to need to be 'boosted' to achieve their aim. I do understand why others like the HDR technique, I'm just not one of them.

I wish I could show you the Palimpsest series of pictures she did for her degree show. They were truly awesome.

I am SO loving this new thread! I have long had a passion for abandoned houses... and there's an old state school and sanitarium nearby that I have long wished to explore. There's even an abandoned rail way (which they want to make into a hiking/biking rail trail!)
In Vermont there are MANY abandoned towns in the woods...with buildings and even cemeteries .
I will DEFINITELY have to learn how to post pics to share with y'all :)

Thanks for the thread femmeInteruptted! :hangloose:

Daktari,

A couple of those photos were like sets for a horror film. You know the ones that take place in an abandoned hospital? Or an abandoned wing no one knew about, in a living hospital? The school was pretty scary too...

Oh, and interesting that you have to worry about asbestos. I guess they used lead paint in all those institutional buildings, too.

Oh, and interesting that you have to worry about asbestos. I guess they used lead paint in all those institutional buildings, too.

The shot of the Welcome to Hellingly graff. was used in a music video we're told. The whole of Hellingly (The East Sussex Asylum) was a graff. installation. These weren't just random taggers but serious graff artists. It's an amazing place. I'll post some more pics later if I'm allowed.

Asylums and hospitals are (were - ill health has meant that I've haven't explored for a couple of years sadly) my passion. Most are in seriously bad condition. The main halls are usually the centrepiece and quite often were rather grand; some even had cinemas.

Asbestos, lead paint and all sorts of nasties are in these places. Safety gear is essential for those who value their health or have health issues.

To be honest I had to stop the most exciting parts of urbexing because I stopped being able to run far and fast enough due to lung disease.
Ingressing such places is actually a civil offense and if caught by security or the like it is possible to be prosecuted. More seriously, if caught exploring 'abandoned' military venues then prosecution under the Terrorist Act can then come into play. One needs to be able to run fast to evade security sometimes. :winky:

One side of urbexing that doesn't grab me at all is the guys who like to climb. They climb not only buildings but cranes, towers and anything that takes them high. :|

Hey Turtle. Awesome pics but please would you please attribute them to who ever did take them to avoid copyright infringement.

I've seen numerous instances where folks have used someone else's picture, taken off the name or watermark and used the image without attributation or payment to the artist. . I'm not in any way saying you've done that but posting other folks work without attribution is intellectual theft.

Just a reminder that if these pictures aren't taken by you and you don't attribute the photographer of the pictures you're stealing their work.

Me and other urbexer friends have had our work stolen regularly. There's even been folks passing other's pictures off as their own. Copyright is serious stuff folks.

Awww Dapper :winky:

It's the same principle when your tangible work is stolen. Like my drawing portfolio, pottery, beads (handmade) etc. Which is why I don't want to work in a publicly accessible studio anymore.

Funny story.

I was sitting at my booth at a craft show, a young woman comes up to me..."omg, you're the lady that makes the beautiful Goddesses... I take them with me everywhere!!! let me show you..." she runs off and returns with her purse/tote with several of my stolen items... "The BIG ones are at home, I love them, my boyfriend bought them for me!!!"

I smiled and replied, "Really? How sweet of him." And lo and behold she brought him over later to show him off. Now I know where all my porcelain is also. He was a fellow student in my classes. Needless to say, he could not look me in the eye.

Daktari,

Another point of view might be that if the piece is not protected (ungrabbable, watermarked, signed, copyrighted, etc) and it is on the web, then it is being shared…deliberately so. I have photos that I am totally cool with sharing, particularly ones of nature and the environment.

I regularly encounter photos that are protected one way or another and don’t use them. I see images where there are literally hundreds of the same image all from different websites and I can't find where they are from. Others are obviously not for public use. If I see that someone is selling their image I bounce away and don’t use it. I’m not interested in stealing.

People post pictures as gifts to each other all over this website giving joy to each other. I am wondering why you just decided to speak to me and Sleepy Butch. With all the picture posting that goes on here on the Planet, including on your visitor page, I'm wondering what this is really about...

The Paris Time Capsule Apartment The owner of this apartment, Mrs. De Florian left Paris just before the rumblings of World War II broke out in Europe.
She closed up her shutters and left for the South of France, never to return to the city again. Seven decades later she passed away at the age of 91.
It was only when her heirs enlisted professionals to make an inventory of the Parisian apartment she left behind, that this time capsule was finally unlocked.

The Abandoned Millionaire’s Resort

Varosha was home to over 39,000 residents but today the holiday town is completely fenced off, forbidding anyone from entering. No tourists roam the streets except for the rare brave explorer who dares find a way in.

This small hospital is surrounded with rumors of being haunted by the ghosts of “insane” children, the nuns who supposedly tortured them, and even a burial site on the grounds.
It was originally a residence built circa 1870 and changed hands for a few years, until a Doctor Bernardi purchased it to be used as a Tuberculosis clinic. In 1940 it was sold to the Italian Red Cross (Croce Rossa),
who apparently treated young children with physical and mental illnesses (TB, epilepsy, etc). The institution reportedly closed in 1970.The institution reportedly closed in 1970.

awesome thread - I used to really love this stuff - back in livejournal days I really enjoyed the rural ruin and urban decay communities. I used to go into abandoned houses out around here in the country just to take photos, but I haven't done that since I fell through the floor of one, then realized the whole corner of the front room was a massive and active beehive. ack! But maybe it's time to start exploring again.

I took this photo somewhere between Nacodoches and Austin several years ago. I don't remember the rest of the house that well, but there was a grave right up against it.

This place has been cleaned out since I took these, and there are now no trespassing signs all around it. It never had any indoor plumbing and was built in the late 1800s. It's behind a cemetery and in front of the railroad tracks just on the north edge of Holland, Texas. The last person to live there was an old woman named Pacha, and her descendents seem to have not been able to agree on what to do with the house since her passing. This house was one of my lotto dreams for a long time.

I can't find my pics of the outside of the house from before the clean-up, but here's the outside:

Imagine converting old cinema converted into a home?!
The Tivoli Theater stands as one of Owen County’s most recognizable landmarks.
Constructed in 1928 by E.M. Viquesney, famed artist of “The American Doughboy” sculpture, the Tivoli is the only example of Mission Revival architecture in the county.
Original exterior elements include stucco, stylized parapet, clay tile pent roofs, and second-floor balconies and arched windows.
Original theater space elements include the stage, wood seats, and decorative plaster moldings, architectural features and sculptural figures.
Small street-level commercial space and second-floor apartment provide additional income potential.
The approximate square footage is 5500. Extensive roof repairs completed in 2008.

In the United States, few cities have felt the burn of urban decay more than Detroit.
To capture its slow fade into history, photographers Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre explored some of Detroit’s dying landmarks for their photo series The Ruins of Detroit.
As the industrial revolution came to a close and race riots crippled a once bustling city, many buildings throughout Detroit fell into disrepair and eventual abandonment.
Today, visitors to Detroit can experience two sides of the city– the revitalized, re-invested downtown area, and the high-rises and industrial complexes which crumble around it.

Under the busy streets of New York City rests a perfectly preserved monument to that city’s transportation history.
The City Hall Subway Station was first constructed over 100 years ago, a part of New York’s earliest underground transport network.
It was shut down in 1945, where it lay dormant and untouched until a one night public exhibition on the station’s centennial.
NYCSubway.org and photographer Fred Guenther have documented this event with a great collection of photos, showing this amazing abandoned place in all its pristine, untouched glory.

http://www.thecoolist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/british-sea-forts_2.jpg

During the Second World War, the British Royal Navy constructed a series of sea forts for an advanced line of defense against inbound air raids and potential sea invasions from the Axis powers.
The Maunsell Sea Forts still stand today, silent and abandoned a few meters above the North Sea.
One, however, remains inhabited, now a nation of its own referred to as the Principality of Sealand.
These sea forts are a favorite of maritime explorers, a lonely collection of stilted fortresses not far off the coast of eastern England.

Off the shores of Alexandria, the city of Alexander the Great, lies what is believed to be the ruins of the royal quarters of Cleopatra.
A team of marine archaeologists led by Frenchman Franck Goddio made excavations on this ancient city from where Cleopatra, the last queen of the Ptolemies, ruled Egypt.
Historians believe this site was submerged by earthquakes and tidal waves more than 1,600 years ago.

The excavations concentrated on the submerged island of Antirhodus. Cleopatra is said to have had a palace there.
Other discoveries include a well-preserved shipwreck and red granite columns with Greek inscriptions.
Two statues were also found and were lifted out of the harbour.
One was a priest of the goddess Isis; the other a sphinx whose face is said to represent Cleopatra's father, King Ptolemy XII.
The artifacts were returned to their silent, because the Egyptian Government says it wants to leave most of them in place to create an underwater museum.

Some cities have a litter problem, some suffer from high crime rates and others might have a lack of affordable housing.
And then you have Dubai, which for the last several years has been facing the unusual problem of high end sports cars being abandoned and left to gather thick layers of dust at airport car parks and on the roadside across the city.

http://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/www.messynessychic.com/farm8.staticflickr.com/7118/640x480x8162850649_f9c3113787_z.jpg.pagespeed.ic.n 82W5tDojr.jpg

Thousands of the finest automobiles ever made are now being abandoned every year since Dubai’s financial meltdown, left by expatriates and locals alike who flee in a hurry because they face crippling debts.
With big loans to repay to the banks (unpaid debt or even bouncing a cheque is a criminal offence in Dubai), the panicked car owners make their way to the airport at top speeds and leave their vehicles in the car park, hopping on the next flight out of there, never to return.

http://www.soap.com.au/underground/burlington_escalator.jpg

A 35 acre subterranean Cold War City that lies 100 feet beneath Corsham. Built in the late 50s this massive city complex was designed by Government personnel in the event of a nuclear strike.
A former Bath stone quarry the city, code named Burlington, was to be the site of the main Emergency Government War Headquarters - the hub of the Country's alternative seat of power outside London.

Over a kilometre in length, and boasting over 60 miles of roads. Blast proof and completely self-sufficient the secret underground site could accommodate up to 6,000 people, in complete isolation from the outside world, for up to three months.

An underground lake and treatment plant could provide all the drinking water needed whilst 12 huge tanks could store the fuel required to keep the four massive generators, in the underground power station, running for up to three months. And unlike most urban cities, above ground, the air within the complex could also be kept at a constant humidity and heated to around 20 degrees. The city was also equipped with the second largest telephone exchange in Britain, a BBC studio from which the PM could address the nation and an internal Lamson Tube system that could relay messages, using compressed air, throughout the complex.

Below are some photos of the unused facilities. It was maintained in working order until the late 1980's until it was cut back to a staff of 4 and then decommisioned in December 2005.

As ever, I am endlessly fascinated by this thread.... I so need to contribute to it....

I was just pondering the other day, the occurrence of things that just suddenly stop being useful to us. I see ancient (formerly horse drawn) plows left in fields....cars left in driveways of long empty houses...buildings crumbling...things that once had a purpose..and meant something to someone. I think about the very last time that place or thing was utilized...and how it's owner probably didn't know that would BE the last time...
I find roads in the woods all the time..that surely used to go somewhere...one thing I have learned about human nature is that we don't really do or make anything without a reason...being a history buff my brain loves to meander on the thoughts of many yesterdays ago...

How cool would this be to stumble upon? I would love to touch it and hear the conversations that were once had inside this car....http://33.media.tumblr.com/d291cf32b2b931362e9634f7c85ed85c/tumblr_mi21fuhDsU1rw3fqbo1_1280.png

"Ruin porn" is a guilty pleasure of mine. I especially love the photos which show the earth "taking back" the original structure and/or re-purposing it.

I have no picture to post but wanted to say something... I've always loved older architecture and often wonder what happened inside them when these places were in their prime.

Anyone else?

I'd love to sit/stand/walk in there and be able to be taken back to a typical day or maybe an event and just be an observer. What a great way to learn about history.

Unfortunately, I don't have those kind of powers but I can still make up stuff in my head.

I don't condone exploring abandoned buildings on your own, as that's dangerous and trespassing. However, I admit I enjoy reading about it, and have books about abandoned sites in Cleveland and Columbus. Maybe my love for abandoned places ties into my love for ghost stories and haunted places.

If you look at the top of the structure, it's an abandoned church. Probably would be pretty cool to live there depending on what went on inside in the past lol.

Hummm. If so, they are certainly not carved from stone. My question would be why are they sitting in the pews? That is odd. Do you suppose they are humans draped for some artistic reason? Denoting the ghostly presence of church goers?

The statues are bizarre. I wonder if they are supposed to be mourners or something like that. Anyone know??

i was curious too...so i looked up niki feijen "disciple of decay" and found out

"in 2010, Niki visited the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in the Ukraine, the ultimate deserted location. Before the nuclear disaster, the city of Pripyat had 50,000 inhabitants. After the catastrophic nuclear accident in 1986, the entire city was evacuated within 48 hours. With the mass abandonment, it was as if time was stopped, leaving thousands of hermited homes, still furnished with the former occupant’s belongings. They never returned to their homes again. Now, more than 25 years later the silence is deafening, like stepping into a deserted kindergarten still filled with dolls, toys, children's shoes and children’s gas masks, leaving an incredible impression."

this needs further research!

Love the overgrown leafy areas, especially the old gardens and walkways. So romantic and wistful.

I absolutely adore these pictures. Actually, I love all pictures of abandoned buildings, towns, cars, forests: everything.

I hate that they were abandoned; but love, love, the beauty in the photos.

This thread always reminds me of Daktari.

I still miss his elegant photos and his charming and bright wit. He made BFP a better place.

Sorry to be a downer but there are threads that just remind me so much of him and this is one of them.

I hope that he is peddling around heaven and enjoying himself immensely.

Not a downer at all. I think of him sometimes, too, and it still surprises me that he's gone. Wherever he is now, he's making it just that much more beautiful with his smile and humor.
