Since so many of us seem to have watched or are watching Orange Is The new Black, I thought maybe we needed a place to hang and chat about the show. :)

I'll start by posting a couple of my favorite gifs from HuffPost's 12 Life lessons From Orange Is The New Black (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/23/12-life-lessons-orange-is-the-new-black_n_3805866.html):

But this thread doesnt have to be all about pics, memes, and gifs - post whatever you want about the show. :winky:

I LOVED this show. I feel like it just became so trendy to love it for a while that I didn't even WANT to like it, but I did. I am also so sad I watched the end of the first season.!!!! I am totally a binge watcher when it comes to TV shows, and at the end if I really like the show I almost feel lonely without the characters.

I feel like the series is clever, and funny, and crazy, and somehow real at the same time. I've never been to prison but I can see a lot of this kind of thing actually happening LOL. And I liked the treatment of different kinds of Queer issues in the show.

Oh, I know you and Dykea were just teasing. :)

For the record though, my not adding her to the poll had nothing to do with me not seeing her or not seeing her as a butch - Lea DeLaria being on the show was one of the first things I noted about it!

But she was a minor character (we didnt see her a ton and they didnt show us her back story) and I figured if I started adding minor characters to the show, I would have to add ALL the characters - and there were over 25 of them!

I understand that time frame! Really though I had never heard of OITB until this thread. So I had to go look into it. I am also wondering why the media has not put this out there in a big way? Or am I that removed from social media?? I think it is a great show, characters, and the REAL dig down deep emotional stuff reflecting back to one's self. This is not just some hokey prison show, it stands all on its own! Can't wait for season 2!!

I'm kinda funny about spoilers - in that I really dont care about them and if I was watching something for which I didnt want to see spoilers, I would stay away from threads or social media or articles talking about that show. I remember last season of Walking Dead, I kept all of the episodes and was going to watch them all at once, but I accidentally saw a spoiler about Lori getting killed and I was all, oh now I *have* to watch the season right now! lol

Seriously though, as far as *I* am concerned - discuss whatever you want here!

BUT -- maybe if we put **SPOILER ALERT** at the top of our posts if we are going to discuss a plot or something someone may consider a spoiler, then if someone wants to read the thread but stay surprised about what happens on the show, they can scroll past our post. :winky:

That should probably apply to those of us who also read articles about future plots, cast changes, etc and want to share those. :)

This is what I did - I started watching it one afternoon, got about half way through before going to bed, and then finished it up the next day. :)

Then I got all sad because I didnt realize that they released all of season 1 at once and hadnt even started filming season 2 yet. lol

Now I am going to watch it again. :winky:

Oh and I love me some Lea as well - I used to watch her stand-up comedy on TV and I distinctly remember her from that episode of Friends when they had the lesbian wedding and she hit on Phoebe. lol

No broadcast networks, cable network, or tv as we know (knew) it involved. This show and 'House of Cards' were produced specifically for Netflix and released for binge watching intentionally.

2nd season of OTNB is filming now.

These shows are in a new class of video entertainment being called 'original online only web television'.

I watched part of an episode, yes only part, because I found it to be so totally against what this site promotes! I find it interesting that there are so many feminists and "lesbian pride" women on this site that would promote a such a show that shows lesbian women in a negative mindset. As far as talking to other women about their "pussy tastes so good", how to have sex, having a "prison wife".
Prison life is being glorified in this show, and you are ok with lesbians being shown in this light? I am completely shocked by the reactions on this thread about the show, and the excitement displayed of seeing lesbians portrayed in this manner. I for one, won't be watching.

I know, I know! Lol. I get all that

But it cracks me up. Maybe because I see myself in so many of the characters.

For me, its relevant, hysterically funny and even heartwarming. It holds nothing back. I know those people. It speaks truth.

Interesting. I don't find the show to be anti-feminist, anti-lesbian, or anti-woman at ALL. As a matter of fact, it feels very REAL to me. I'm not sure it glorifies prison at ALL. Maybe if you watched more than one episode, you might realize issues like rape, transphobia, lesbian phobia, misogyny, racism, classism, drug abuse, and much more are dealt with.

I don't think there's anything wrong with talking about how good someone's pussy tastes, or about how to have sex, or anything along that matter. It seems sex positive to me rather than portraying lesbians in a bad light. I don't see where saying those things is misogynistic in and of themselves. Also--the stuff about having a prison wife? I'm pretty sure that's based in the realities of being in prison.

I also don't see where prison life is glorified. From what I've seen--prison is the LAST fucking place I'd want to be!!!!! However, I also think that women in a situation like that are of course going to form relationships and alliances and have successes and failures. I think their humanity is what is being shown.

I dunno, it's hard to analyze when you have only seen part of an episode, but I'm interested in what others think?

I agree with you here and want to add that we also dont often see shows with (a) this many women in strong female leading roles and (b) this many women of color in ensembles such as this.

But to be honest, I dont think women loving this show about other women in very real roles handling very real topics in sometimes serious, sometimes funny ways *needs* to be defended. To anyone.

I would challenge anyone (as I challenged myself, after I made assumptions about what this show was about) to at least watch 4 episodes (give it a chance), and get to know a few characters before making a decision. Maybe it won't change your mind, maybe it will.

Personally, I can assure you, that after watching the entire season, I am still a proud, strong, stone-femme, feminist woman. And frankly, I do not feel like enjoying this show should leave us open to being questioned about which direction our moral compasses point, as members of this amazingly diverse and welcoming community.

For me, I found the characters to be wonderful examples of utterly and entirely fallible human beings. I love that they have flaws and strengths. The characters are raw, vulnerable, sexy, loving, kind, mean, fat, skinny, old, young, gay, lesbian, straight, bi-sexual, MTF, butch, femme, confused, uncertain, religious, not religious, have mental health issues, disabilities, drug problems, successes, failures...etc...etc...I love that so many of them are owning their shit, and growing, despite being incarcerated. I love that this show brings up every ism on every spectrum imaginable, and throws these isms in the viewers' face, so they can see exactly how ugly and stupid isms really are.

I would be insulted if the characters back stories and current experiences were less fucked up, or less heartbreaking, or if the primary characters were weak, pretty (average 20-30 year old straight male viewers' version of pretty), straight women who were LWIP (lesbians while in prison), who were prayed upon by the scary godless lesbians. Luckily, that is not what is happening on this program.

The show is about a HUGE VARIETY of women... I don't know a SINGLE other show anywhere that has this much visibility??!!?? WOC, age, class, background, size, health, butch, lesbian... the list can seriously go ON. There are THAT many. It's cool!

I'll take OISTNB visibility of lesbians over the bubblegum BS the "L Word" was promoting ANY DAY!

The million dollar lesbians of Southern California? Paaahleeze.... and the "L word" was NEVER FUNNY.

So some of the lesbian characters on the show talk about pussy? So what? Lots of lesbians talk about pussy, fucking and enjoy it.
What's completely different about OISTNB is that it is not being **wrapped up w/a bow** for the male gaze and heterocentric consumerism.

GOOD! I'm glad. Lesbian visibility is important AND lesbian sex is AWESOME!!
:heartbeat:
lol!!

Lesbian Pride is important and sex is part of being a lesbian.

Well, I am not sure this site is "promoting " anything specific. However I feel BFP supports (by way of venues discussed here on BFP) a vast gallery of what is reflected in our community. Be that LDR's, people who love puppies and/or kittens, political interest, poems, fisting, BDSM, packing, strapping, flogging and fucking and so much more. Search the forums and you can find multiple topics on all those I mentioned and more so! I don't feel like prison life is glorified in OITNB, and I am fine with the light shed on lesbians being portrayed as they are in this show. I feel the reality of the show is pretty accurate. I have over the past 35 years as an out lesbian on many occasions talked about pussy tasting good, BTW that is not just specifically lesbian related. How to have sex is also discussions I have had with partners, I love the openness of taking about such things, it sure does make things smoother in the fisting department! I do not feel as if this show diminishes my "lesbian pride" with the topics Orange has played out.

This show includes straight and lesbian/butch/MTF/bi women together and I LOVE THAT! I look forward to there being more added to that list in time! It is not all slanted one way or the other. Not sure why a prison wife would be any different than saying wife, other than to make obvious they are in a prison setting. I have never been in prison, so some things I cannot speak of or elaborate on......but I am learning. Do I want to go to prison (glorified) because of Orange? Ummm NOPE! Jodi Foster was involved in some of the directing!! <swoon> :tease: I would love to see her have an acting role!! Someone else mentioned about truth, and I don't see any lies being fed to us in that the truth and honesty is not only reflected.....it is projected and I feel it. I hear it. I embrace it as a learning experience. I am reflecting on past relationships because of what I am hearing and seeing, I am relating by being a female first.....

SO I am not all consumed by Orange, but fascinated! Yes sex happens in this show, but such is life! And besides, those moments are few and in between the day to day events. I hope you or anyone else who has any doubts would/will watch an episode or two. There have been many times in my life that I did not agree with something as a lesbian, but still supported those events in my life. This is the first season of a developing show and its always a little rough cutting a path. It is tastefully done! I respect that you have your opinion, and that this show seemingly offends you Guy. My opinion being opposite does not make me any less of a feminist, nor has it diminished my lesbian pride. I find it "interesting" that you think it does because I support and promote this show. It is the positive of this show that is appealing to me.

Part of the reason I love the show is because it has such a variety of different characters who have diverse story lines, and aren't perfect. Initially their flaws might seem very blatant, but over time you get to learn about the core individual and what experiences led them to where they are.

I don't think the L Word necessarily promoted lesbians in the most positive of lights, so I don't quite see how this series differs much. If anything, it's not all about sex, and the L Word tended to be 75% lady-part lovin'.

Ya might want to give it a whirl some day. :)

I agree. One of my most favorite things about Crazy Eyes is the evolution of her character. She IS fucking crazy. And at first she seems to be comic relief--but really she is so much more than that. We begin to see her humanity throughout the season, her strength, and see that even though she is a loony toon--she's also a person with her own story and her own feelings and is actually kinda brilliant.

Any character that can be that funny but that touching at the same time is particularly compelling.

And yes, anyone who throws their pie for you is the shit.

I really enjoy the flashbacks in the show, and how we learn more and more about WHY each character is the way she is. It's one reason why watching the entire series is so compelling. It just builds and builds and builds upon itself.

Also--one of the best things about the show is that I don't feel there is one weak character at ALL. I love all of them for different reasons. It was hard for me not click every single when of them when taking the poll LOL.

Nicki is *totally* my kinda butchie. I dunno if that character would ID that way but holy mary mother of god that gal is HAWT.

super wise cracking smart-ass, a little bit tough on the surface, smudgy black eyeliner, hilarious, dirty flithy fucker with a dirty mouth. Little bit messy, little bit vulnerable.

fork. done.

Also Poussey. She does make me giggle on the inside. I could totally fall in love with a gal like that.

Nicki I would crash for, chemistry to the ceiling, more than likely she'd make me mental and then hurt me (long history with these ones) and then I'd want Poussey to swoop in, be my friend, and kiss it all better, show me some fine, fine lovin' and I'd make her lunches and be her girl. <3

there I've just mapped out my life with the characters on the show that twist my knickers.

As for the other characters...

Crazy eyes, yeah when I saw her I thought PHWOAR! who's that!!!!

And I do like them a little unstable, but that's a bit to crazy, even for me. the peeing on the floor I could handle, no problem - I've dealt with worse. It's the "I threw a pie for you..." in that tone of voice that unnerved me. Plus people that more that fast, freak the shit out of me.

But her holding her hand and sharing her headset was super, super sweet and she is incredibly gorgeous. In fact she's damn beautiful.

the only characters that puts me off is boo and piper. I dunno, something about the way boo talks *really* puts me off... I wouldn't go there. Piper would be like antimatter to me. Just her whole manner and personality. She's annoying. well, and the southern psychos-clan meth-heads. I can't deal with that kind of stuff. I'd probably scream and swat at them like a big poof.

I certainly wouldn't kick Alex out of my bed. I think she'd probably make me say aaaaaaalllllll kinds of things, aaaaaanything she wanted....

It's just so nice to see a program with women in it I'm *actually* attracted to for *once*. I got so excited about that I accidentally watched the whole thing in three days.

I'm a feminist and my pussy tastes *awesome*. And I have told a couple of my friends if I had some seriously awesome sex. They want to know the details. I tell them. they tell me. I love swapping sex stories. I like sex stories told to me by my partners/playfriends. I *like* hearing things like "and she bit the banister so hard she left teeth marks in it!!" it makes me laugh and turns me on.

But I have casual sex, I enjoy other people's bodies, they enjoy mine, we joke about all while knowing that other people are humans. I can appreciate a fine, fine ass AND know that the person it's on has a life and feelings.

I have friends that tell me "hey, nice rack barb!"
"Fanks!"

If I know the person? I don't really care, I've even sent friends some of my work shots (erotic modeling) cause they if really like it, I like my work appreciated. it's really hard work, it's exhausting, the shoots are 12 hours long and there are almost no breaks and I can't get untrussed. So it's actually nice to be told "these shots are great!" etc. Is it objectifying? yes. But I don't find it disrespectful. I find it playful and... they still somehow interact with *me* on some level. That's what I hear in those dialouges. wistful, appreciative, and even with dirty casual sex that happens only one time, you can both connect if you are both present and willing. I still give myself over. So objectification does not have to be clinical, cold or distancing. I know how it feels when someone is *in it* and objectifying, or *not*. the latter is disgusting and feels ick, the former is actually a huge turn on for me.

Context is a HUGE part of it.

But that's just me. Many people just don't work that way/aren't wired that way, so they don't get it or don't understand.

Pussy does taste good.

I used to watch Oz. It didn't mean I glorified prison life.

I am a lesbian so I get to say what I personally enjoy.

We have so few depictions of lesbians on TV, I will take what I can get.

Lesbians go to prison. Just like straight people. Just like gays. Just like transfolk.

I love that all of us can chose what we like and don't like on TV.

My remote sure comes in handy for things like that.

Lol why do the poll results add up to 168+ %?

Being a nerd I guess-

I meant to answer this and forgot - it's because of the way I have the poll set up. People can vote for more than one character, so instead of the percentages adding up to 100%, which is how it would be if people could only vote once, we are seeing the % of the people voting in the poll who voted for that character.

If you'll notice, there are 40 voters (and 67 votes cast) - so for example, Crazy Eyes is at 50% because she has 20 votes, which is half of those 40 people who voted in the poll. Nicki is 10% because 4 out of the 40 people who voted, voted for her.

Does that make sense? In other polls, where you can only vote once (i.e., the veteran thread), the percentages would add up to 100%.

KS, not a channel, it's only on netflix, which is a place you stream movies in from:

http://www.netflix.com

you get a months free trial and you can watch it in that time ;)

I don't have a TV. I only watch shows via piratebay, Project Free TV, Top Documentary Films (.com), you tube, UKdocumentry, BBC iplayer, CBC player, Film4onDemand, and ITVplayer.

Film 4 is per movie and netflix is per month, but the rest are all free. I get a UK IP address to watch BBC via tunnel bear which is $5 a month.

It's Brilliant. I will never watch TV again. Waste of time.

Piper, well, no. That's a whole big mess I wouldn't want any part in!

Nicki is pretty rawr! but, honestly? I think she would be too forward/agressive for me. *shrug*

Crazy Eyes is total crazy but it really struck a chord deep inside when she asked Piper why people call her Crazy Eyes. I totally wanted to hug her!

Big Boo? Psh, you know if you were her girl she'd totally take care of you [possibly in a controlling, slightly posessive and insanely jealous way..but still..] K, I might be kinda crushing on Big Boo! Must be the seemingly bad boi attitude she has going on.

Poussey [did I remember that correctly??] would just be a femme friend for me!

I could def see Red being my prison mother LOL She reminds me of my friend's German mother - brutally honest, but once she adopts you, you're in for life.

I find it entertaining that what was pulled out of my post earlier is "how pussy tastes", which had nothing to do with the core of my post. It is interesting that most of those who replied to my post and find it ok for the references made to be funny and acceptable, are also the same who were not so long ago in the Butch Cock and Old Fashion/Old School threads criticizing the butches for their ideas and discussion about the way they use, feel about, and embrace their butch cock. At that time, it was "horrible" and "dewomanizing" and "degrading towards women" ex: I love when a woman takes my butch cock in her mouth and sucks it. Yet, it is perfectly acceptable for the butches on this show to talk about women in this fashion and it is now considered comedy.

We have received several reports about your posts in this thread. Please do not drag drama from one thread to another and derail the conversation.
It is not acceptable to try to drum up that conversation again.

Everyone in this thread needs to remain respectful. This is a fluffy thread, please let it remain that way!

No problem. I wasn't really looking for any discussion, and I wasn't trying to start any drama.

I thought this was an adult discusion about the context of the show and was pointing out my views, and past experiences on this subject. If that is a cause for reporting my post than be it.

It's really interesting to see how other people see the characters in the show.

to me, Alex is Futch. Totally. femme-ish outside coating (dress), but total butch in the way she treats others and the way she moves. she has a certain difference of grace. My radar went BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP when I saw her character. I would so go there.

Poussey isn't the slightest bit femme to me at all. I only pick butch up from her mannerisms and movement and interaction. She's soft spoken, gentle and practical, but to my radar and liking, butch. Well, butch-in-my-brain.

I do think it's pretty cool though to see other people's perception of gender markers. I know it's very experience and location dependent. Plus some of the "softest" of butches have turned out to have the biggest mofo brain cocks and strangely more old fashioned in some ways than OFOS stone butch I've dated.

And guy, dude, maybe the people who were telling you off for that in that thread weren't the same people in this one. Like me. Maybe just bring it up in personal IM if you are confused? that's sincere, since I went on about it. If you wanna ask me a question in pvt, I'm happy to answer.

As I am re-watching season one, I am thinking ahead to things that are going to happen - I was really torn when Red was ousted from the kitchen. I mean, I really love her character and loved seeing her as head of the kitchen and "mommy" to many; but on the other hand, I loved seeing what led to her getting "fired" from the kitchen and watching the Hispanic group take over after Red was gone - especially how much better the food got after that. lol

I cant remember the name of the woman who became head of the kitchen - I am SO bad with names, she was *just* in episode 1 talking to Daya in Spanish when Saya was all, I dont speak Spanish - that whole exchange with her, Daya, and Piper was funny to me. Seeing that whole scene in episode 1 was what triggered the memory of - oh yeah, she takes over the kitchen later.

Why can't they just create a female version of Oz?

Hey Talon :)
I'll be the FIRST to admit that I was a HUGE fan of OZ!! And seriously... a HUGE fan.

But OISTNB is based on the book... Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison
by Piper Kerman

It's based on the experiences of a woman being in prison and specifically a privileged white woman. She's awkward, stumbles, fuck ups CONSTANTLY and learns something about women of all different class, cultures, color, sexuality, abuse, history of drugs, mental health, physical health... the LIST goes on and on.

THAT'S FABULOUS!!!

There isn't one damn thing w/this many stories of making women visible anywhere else. The stories of each character that slowly pulls you in and has you ROOT for them individually is what makes you wonder who are we going to learn about NEXT???

So as MUCH as I loved OZ... the stories of women is much more fascinating and fun for me personally. And the show is damn funny. lol!

I'm sorry Anya - I just cant do it. I tried to, I wanted to, and I even meant to put something at the top of my post about Red, but I just forgot because I really want to talk about the show with other people who have seen and enjoyed it; and if we avoid talking about story lines and plot because someone might not have watched all (or any) of it yet, we will never get to talk about that stuff because it isnt like a regular season show with a start date and end date.

I know if I dont want to know what is going to happen on Survivor, I stay off of that thread until the episode airs here in my time zone. Same for The Walking Dead and American Horror Story - if I dont want to see what happens, I stay out of those threads until I've seen the season (I usually save those 2 and watch them all at once at the end of the season lol).

It sucks to say that and I kinda feel like an asshole putting it out there, but like I said, there is no set start/end date or set night/time for this show and if we wait for *everyone* to see it before we talk about it, we will be waiting forever! :(

Oh how I wish I could go back and fix the mistake of leaving her off the list!

I was trying to limit the number of characters because there were about a dozen female characters of whom we saw a lot, then another dozen of whom we didnt see that much, then the dudes. To keep the list down, I decided to leave off the dudes and the characters of whom we saw very little - as in, not a lot of screen time, no flashbacks to show their stories, etc.

As for character stories, I really liked Tiffany/Mrs. I am God's right hand lady. Not because I like her - oh no - but it really explained why she is so hellbent now. It almost feels like a brainwash to me, not because she is so devout, but because she wasn't until the church stepped up to portray her as a 'protector of babies' and she had to suck it up and smile.. all for trying for a lesser sentence and stuff.

I really felt Claudette's story made her A-OK. Waiting to see Poussey's since she is not a drug user. And Big Boo's.. Maybe she put an ex gf's new gf in the hospital or something. I could see it.

If you're talking about Prison Break, I don't think there is much comparison there. To me, it is a different animal entirely. OITNB is based off of a true story, Prison Break is not. Prison Break has the flexibility of being able to take extreme changes in plot/story direction. OITNB doesn't have the ability to change like that.

On a side note (off topic), in my opinion, the actor that I didn't feel received enough credit for his skills from Prison Break, was Robert Knepper.

I may have to check it out. I almost never watch anything set in prison. It breaks my heart thinking about the ruined lives. But it does sound good. I heard an interview on NPR with the show's creator too, which piqued my interest.

I did watch Prison Break because of the comparisons to 24, which I had loved. I skipped the season set in the Panamanian jail. Couldn't handle it. I normally cannot take it when people are falsely accused either -- Fugitive-like narratives. But I watched Prison Break. I can't say it was great, but I watched it gluttonously.

Its often tricky to see some US shows on the computer in Canada unless they are already shown on Canadian tv or Canadian Netflix. Or unless you have one of those programs that allow you to look like your in a different country of your choice. But since this is an Australian tv show I am hopeful...

I'm still feeling guilty about not having Big Boo in the poll, so here is another interview with Lea DeLaria where she is talking about the show, how people are recognizing her now, the infamous screwdriver, whether or not Natasha Lyonne is gay, being called a bulldyke, etc.

OITNB’s Lea DeLaria on the ‘Bulldyke’ Debate, Onscreen Masturbation, and Hitting on Natasha Lyonne (http://www.vulture.com/2013/07/orange-is-the-new-black-lea-delaria-interview.html)

Oh, and I had no idea Jodie Foster directed the 3rd episode (Lesbian Request Denied) - I totally want to go watch that episode again now. LOL

It is your dyke duty, you realize, to tell us about working with Jodie Foster [who directed episode three, “Lesbian Request Denied”].

I literally had one line, when I’m standing in line for pills. We did the first rehearsal, and Jodie came up and grabbed me by the shoulders and she goes, “You’re really very funny. You’re an incredibly funny actor. You move a lot” — my character is kind of nervous, that’s why she’s on meds — “I think that’s too much for this shot.” So I was like, I’ll tone it down. “And she’s like, 'We’re gonna keep the camera on you, and just throw out ten lines,' because the line was, 'Oh, I like the orange ones. Oh, wait a minute, they give me that terrible itch in my … ' That was the end of it. So I just chose the dot-dot-dot to be the vagina, and then every funny thing I could think of. I think take seven was “Kunta Kinte.” And Laverne [Cox, who plays Sophia] was behind me and she ruined the take because she burst out laughing when I said “Kunta Kinte.” And I was like, “Asshole, that would have been so brilliant!” And she was like, “Say it again!” and I was like, “No, no, no! I get ten takes. I’m gonna say something funny.” They ended up going with “cooter,” I believe.

Interesting interview of Piper Kerman
http://www.salon.com/2013/09/06/the_real_piper_from_orange_is_the_new_black_partne r/

A couple of excerpts:

Was the prison staff as homophobic as the warden in the show?

I only reflect upon my own experience, so I definitely saw a lot of homophobia from the prison staff directed at prisoners and also towards each other in sort of an unfettered or unchecked way. No one is getting in trouble in prison for being homophobic, let’s put it that way.

Is the character of Sister Ingalls — the nun who is a protester — close to reality?

Sure, fairly close, yeah, though the show’s character of course is quite different than Sister Ardeth Platte, who gave me permission to use her real name in the book. But yeah, that’s a good example. Those folks are closely drawn.

In your book, you write about encountering other political prisoners, particularly those arrested for protesting the School of Americas.

There are many political prisoners in America, particularly in the federal system. That’s where they generally all go. Often, they were serving really short sentences if they were first-time offenders, like a 90-day sentence, which is sort of ridiculous on some level, but a number of those folks had short sentences, like 90 days or six months.

Someone like Ardeth Platte was considered a repeat offender because she had committed many protests of conscience, so she was serving, if my memory is correct from the book, close to four years, as were the two other nuns she was arrested with.

How do you respond to critiques that you — and “Orange Is the New Black” — are profiting off the struggles and stories of women of color?

The book is the book, right? I wrote the book to depict my own experience, and I think that’s a really important thing. I don’t see any problem whatsoever with me depicting my own experience and telling my own story. I’m very proud of the show, but Jenji is the show’s creator and at the end of the day, she’s the ultimate decision-maker. I remain in close contact with some women I did time with—a variety of women, some of them are white, some of them are not white. The people who have been in touch with me —both when the book came out and when the show started—are excited. The people I knew in prison, if they are not excited, have not communicated that to me.

I try to be very respectful of other people’s stories and other people’s ownership of their stories. I hope that the show opens up more and more desire and demand for stories that come out of the criminal justice system. That’s what I think is most important: for people to have more and more hunger to hear about a system very different than what has been depicted to date in the media.

Oh, and I had no idea Jodie Foster directed the 3rd episode (Lesbian Request Denied) - I totally want to go watch that episode again now. LOL

I love how my favorite scene of the series (so far) is from the episode that Jodie directed. lol

I was going to post the YouTube I had of the whole scene but Lionsgate blocked it for copyright reasons :( so I found this short clip of the end:

It took Netflix to get me the young straight girls I’ve always wanted. [Laughs.]

~ Lea DeLaria

The quote above kind of gave me a yuck feeling. I know she said it tongue in cheek, but it is still uncomfortable to me. It is too easy to assume that she means it in a more lascivious way.

Uh...I left out some words. I'll put them where they belong. :|

I went to that interview and read it. Holy shit am I ever niave. And completely ignorant. Of of my old and close friends I've know since 14, his mom was a prison officer. She never ever wanted to talk about her job. And I only heard about Wormwood Scrubs in London via whispers and rumours about what went on in there. I can't imagine what that prison is like. I've been around the outside of it as its in London, but the outside of it scared the shit out of me. Its as far from anything in my highly privileged canuckian little life as the shanty towns of Jakarta were (which also scared the shit out of me, but also filled me with awe that humans could be so strong they could survive in that. Wormwood just made my stomach funny with nerves).

I realize I know nothing about our punishment system in BC. I have been to BC Pen when it closed down. We broke in after a flood and took pictures of the old cells. The most disturbing was the solitary. They kept the front house but the rest was pulled down and the land is now condos. They did the same with Esindale, where they used to put people with learning disabilities and emotionally ill. Because when I was a girl that was still done. It wasn't until I was about 14 that all of that changed.

Driving past BC Pen and Esindale, they are on the same road, with the woods behind and the river in front was a creepy drive and I used to always stare as a kid. People locked up. Scary people in a scary place. So scary we don't talk to them or see them.

I'm now going to look to see if there are stories by any women from our prison system, in particular, first nation as that seems to be the women here who get the shortest end of the stick. I want to hear it from their mouths.

If I find anything I'll let people know.

I player the first episode to two.of my straight girl friends (context: they weren't in it for watching the hotties) and they loved it so much they stayed till 3 am and watched the whole series. Why? Because they were relieved that there was finally a TV show that wasn't about 1) men 2) women's relationships with men 3) how the women support men 4) how much women would like to be with men.
And they were ecstatic every episode passed the The Bechdel test ( asks whether a work of fiction features at least two women who talk to each other about something other than a man). 2) this was about women's lives. In context to each other, not men.

They all found Piper to be utterly annoying and antagonistic. But they loved crazy eyes. And Tasty. A lot.

"I like how pipers ignorance is laid bare and when she whines she looks like a complete asshole. I love all of the womens stories. And barb, bullshit crazy eyes is not your type. We've seen you with women more bat shit than her!"

Then they all laughed and nodded and said she was probably better than half of 'em. They meant it sincerely.

So that's two straight gals and a dyke mate that night that think CE is kinder and saner than half my exes....

Because so many people want to talk about this, but we don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, a few of us decided to watch it together.

We thought we all could fire up our netflix, go into one of the chat rooms set up for this and all press START at the same time and watch together while talking in chat. Maybe 2 or 3 binge shows at a time?

I saw an interview with Kate Mulgrew, the actress who plays Red, where she talked about the reaction that fans had to the series and she said "It's an exploration of women at their very best and at their very worst and at their most genuine. What could be better than that?" I think that sums up a large part of the appeal of the show quite nicely for the women I know who watch it. It feels authentic in a way that a lot of other shows do not.

Wow, I had no idea. For some reason i wasn't even sure if they would be doing another season.

Has there been any mention of Alex in the media on this? Will she be more involved? She is my favorite and adds an extra touch to the show that I don't think is there otherwise.

I soooo hope this season is better than last. There were like, literally two story lines I was interested in all season long. If this season is as bad, I'm pretty much done, even if they keep on.

Poussey is my fave I think, followed with Big Boo and Pensatucky now. I used to like Alex the best but she's kind of lost some focus on the show as it's gone along. I love the other charaters. They all really add to the show. Can't stand Piper, though. Ugh. She makes me want to smack her all the time. lol

Yes, I agree, season 3 of OITNB was not that great. I think the trailer for season 4, provided they did not include all of the only great scenes; looks pretty darn good. I am so starved for a series with some realistic and (a couple of real) lesbians I will watch it regardless.

Fingers crossed.

Just finished episode one of season 4.

I heard a catchy tune that is kind of giving me an ear worm:

"Motherfucker got fucked up because he got in the way...."

I made the mistake of reading an article that had a tiny little orange inverted triangle at the top of the page that said "Spoiler Alert".

I overlooked it.

Unfortunately, the article gave away the ending of season 4!

I have never had this happen before and feel so ripped off! I am always careful to not give away spoilers or to read them.

I was on episode 8, too.

On the positive side, season 4 is much, much better than season 3.

I hate that I now know the end of season 4.

It is like getting close to orgasm and then losing it.

Crap.

Oh, Anya that's the worst!!! It was a pretty big surprise of an ending, too. I finished season 4 about a week ago.

I'm on number 9 now.

I wasn't even looking forward to season 4 because I did not much like S3 but 4 is really good.

Love love love the excursion into the woods with crazyeyes! Seeing her history and what brought her to the prison was interesting. I like seeing her assert herself. Also surprised with some other issues she runs into this season.

I cried at the end of the last episode.

Even though, thanks to Entertainment Weekly (bitches) I knew what was going to happen, I did not expect the emotional impact.

Season 4, was truly great.

I do wish that I got to see more than a minute of Ruby Rose. I really dug her last season.

I would have been so pissed had it been spoiled for me. I cried. I feel like I'm still reeling from it and no one's really talkng about it.

Why don't we talk about it?

I think putting "Spoiler Alert" on the title is fair warning for folks that have not seen it, don't you?

I never read any further if I see a spoiler alert and have not finished a series.

What do you think?

I saw a lot of people talking about it in the months following the finale actually, and rightfully so because that season finale was basically just more trauma porn for white tears. Lots of folks had major problems with it.
